View Full Version : Extras in Season Three Box Set novarrofan 11-17-2010, 07:47 AM Apart from "Lucy at the World's fair does anyone have any idea of what other extras are included in the season three box set? Any new interviews possibly? Robert 13 11-17-2010, 05:28 PM I'd like to know too. My guess is that there will be a dvd review on this site soon. Is it just me or does it feel like they keep stuff like this under wraps these days...for what, I don't know. You would think they would want to promote the extras. So far, we have one featurette we know is included. Maybe that's it. I remember the days when tvshowsondvd.com used to report every single little thing. It's not their fault but it seems like they aren't getting a whole lot of info from the studios anymore. Technology sure has made people lazy. :D Now you can, literally, send info over in seconds and still info isn't announced. We just might have to wait until we have it in our hands to find out. Marvo301 11-17-2010, 07:50 PM According to tvshowsondvd.com besides the "Lucy at the World's Fair" featurette, the set will also include cast commercials and other features. Of course they don't say what those other features are! McGillicuddy 11-17-2010, 08:14 PM The other features would probably be the stuff that was on the first two releases-- short descriptions of guest stars, outakes, production notes and photo gallaries. I think if there were any more interviews, they would have announced them, although didn't they keep the "Let's talk to Carole Cook" segment under wraps until the last minute on the Complete Season 2? I guess we'll have to wait and see. comedyfreak 11-18-2010, 01:51 AM I can't wait for the 30th. Retro TV Lover 11-27-2010, 08:01 AM I saw the back cover on DVD Empire, and besides Lucy at the World's Fair, there are clips from the Danny Kaye Show, and Rare International promos and Film clips. Everything else are the normal production notes, vintage openings, etc. I don't know if I'm just getting paranoid, but it seems to me that the amount of bonus features is getting smaller with each release. At least we know that they'll always have the same things that were on the ILL releases. Well, it looks like no Candy Moore or Ralph Hart. :( lplucyfan 11-29-2010, 07:48 PM I don't know if I'm just getting paranoid, but it seems to me that the amount of bonus features is getting smaller with each release. No one was holding back on bonus material for season 3. There just wasn't much to choose from. The cast had stopped doing commercials by this time. The only cast commercial used in season 3 was one that was re-used from season 2. There was no General Foods Opening night special that year, no segment with Lucy on a CBS fall preview special, or anything like that. As with any show that's 3 years old, the network had stopped promoting it so much. As for Ralph and Candy, believe me they were approached, but for whatever reason chose not to participate. The producer's made an extra effort to work with the Danny kaye estate to get clips from that show, but trust me when I say that the World's Fair documentary is worth the "price of admission" alone. A solid thirty minutes of never-before-seen Lucy footage. A lot of work went into this, believe me! Robert 13 11-30-2010, 12:18 PM I got my copy! :cheer: And I must say it is really wonderful to have the First 3 Seasons out on dvd. Looking forward to Season 4 next year. These sets have been beautifully produced. The cover-art is quite striking for Season 3. Love the orange background. Jude The Obscure 11-30-2010, 08:59 PM Hopefully mine will be in the mail tomorrow....I want to enjoy some Lucy before having to go back to work. Marvo301 11-30-2010, 10:08 PM I got my copy this afternoon! McGillicuddy 11-30-2010, 10:28 PM Dummy me! I put it on a Christmas wish list. Now I wish I didn't, I want to run to Target and get it NOW. Oh well. LittleRickyII 12-01-2010, 01:07 AM My copy is on its way from Amazon. I opted for the free shipment, so it may be as much as a week before I receive it. I just checked Amazon. As of midnight here on the East Coast, as we're now rolling into December 1, the season 3 set is ranked 898 for all movie and TV show sales on Amazon, and ranked #80 for movie and TV comedy boxed sets. I'm not sure how good that is, or how it compares to the previous releases. Marvo301 12-01-2010, 01:46 AM I watched the first four episodes and I haven't laughed like that in a long time!:brent storrs19 12-01-2010, 10:12 AM I got mine at Target yesterday and watched "Lucy and the Missing Stamp" and "Lucy the Coin Collector" right off. I love those two episodes. Great set as always. Kasey 12-01-2010, 12:56 PM S1 and S2 both cracked the Top 100 on Amazon.com and Amazon.ca. Unfortunately, S3 missed cracking the Top 500 on both sites so far. I can't see it getting any higher either, unless they discount it drastically very soon, like they did with "Here's Lucy". Hopefully most people are buying this at retail stores like I did mine, and the sales will still be good. Robert 13 12-01-2010, 01:13 PM Surprising. I had hoped the sales would have continued to be successful like Season 2. Maybe most people were counting on Christmas or post-Christmas sales. I hope it doesn't hurt the chances of Season 4 in March 2011. rjt100 12-01-2010, 04:54 PM Pre-order sales have been great for season three of "The Lucy Show." Currently, "The Lucy Show" is number 13 on DVD.Empire.com. Don't worry, sales are still great and we will see season four in March of 2011. In fact, the three remaining seasons will all be released. Also, keep in mind that seasons one thru three are being sold as a package. So, people have an option to buy all three seasons or just season three. :) :) :) McGillicuddy 12-01-2010, 06:36 PM Pre-order sales have been great for season three of "The Lucy Show." So, people have an option to buy all three seasons or just season three. :) :) :) "In fact" the three remaining seasons will be released? Where did you hear that? It would surprise me that Paramount would confirm releases this far out, especially given that there isn't a big profit margin on TV series on DVD. How do you know this to be a fact? Paramount has a history of stopping releases of TV series after only a couple seasons, so I'm surprised they would commit this early to releasing all six seasons of this series. (And remember the old VHS releases of TLS, which they stopped after just a few volumes?) The drop in sales on Amazon does concern me very much. Pre-order rankings of Season Two also were much higher (I've tracked both). And incidentally, Amazon did sell the first two seasons as a package when Season Two came out, and that didn't prevent sales of Season Two individually from doing really well, much better than this time. I'm also concerned about the 4th season being targeted for release in the same month as the 4th season of Here's Lucy (assuming they still plan to release it). But I will feel better if you can let us know how you got confirmation from Paramount that they are committed to releasing all six seasons. rjt100 12-01-2010, 10:15 PM From a friend. They are in the process of remastering all of season five and season six episodes. That's all I can say. Zoneboy 12-01-2010, 10:19 PM From a friend. They are in the process of remastering all of season five and season six episodes. That's all I can say. If that's the case then I'll consider this nothing but a rumor until some verifiable proof can be presented. Robert 13 12-02-2010, 01:16 PM March 2011 is going to be Lucy Month with Season 4 of "The Lucy Show" AND "Here's Lucy". Definitely something to look forward to. :happyface 1960'sTVfan 12-02-2010, 07:49 PM The number of episodes per season decreased as the series went along. 1st season: 30 eps 2nd season: 28 eps 3rd season: 26 eps 4th season: 26 eps 5th season: 22 eps 6th season: 24 eps Since there are 24 shows in the 6th season and only 22 in the 5th, it appears the 5th season ended up a few episodes short. Only 22 episodes instead of 26 or 24. The 3rd season was the last really good season. The series lost steam after Vivian Vance left. Retro TV Lover 12-02-2010, 11:48 PM I think the reason season 5 only had 22 episodes is because the Lucy in London special was considered 2 episodes. 22 episodes is way too short for any sitcom in the 60s, 24 is even pretty short, Lucy must've had some deal with CBS to be allowed such short seasons. McGillicuddy 12-03-2010, 12:49 AM Lucy in London was a special, it was not an episode of The Lucy Show. LittleRickyII 12-03-2010, 06:22 PM From a friend. They are in the process of remastering all of season five and season six episodes. That's all I can say. I'm not trying to be the bearer of bad news, but I checked with a friend who is working on these DVDs and he informed me that any rumors that CBS has committed to releasing seasons 5 and 6 are "completely false." One well-known individual in the "Lucy" world is reporting otherwise, but it simply is not true. And I didn't get the feeling from this individual that anything has been remastered beyond the 4th season, but even if they have, that does not in any way guarantee a product release. I worked for a company where we were deeply involved in developing a new product and were close to the product launch when management suddenly pulled the plug, and that product never saw the light of day. This happens all the time when circumstances change and management has to reassess the viability of a product if sales forecasts change. CBS/Paramount, like most companies, is doing a lot of belt tightening these days, so we can't assume any guarantees at all. And remastering is only an early step in a costly process (TV DVDs, by the way, are generally not very profitable). The only way we can know for sure that the final two seasons will be released (and really even season 4, for that matter), is if sales remain solid and CBS/Paramount knows it will clear a profit. They really don't care how many die-hard fans there are. What they care about is whether they're going to make money. If sales for Season Three have dropped off too much, and if sales for Season Four drop further, that won't bode well for the final two seasons being release. If CBS/Paramount sees signs that they may lose money, they are likely to pull the plug. What fans need to do is not be complacent about buying the DVDs. If you want to ensure future releases, get out and buy the current seasons as soon as possible if you haven't already done so. McGillicuddy 12-03-2010, 07:31 PM This makes me wonder, are the sales to the I Love Lucy season volumes available? Did the sales for these releases stay pretty consistant from seasons 1-6 and how did the LDCH compare? Marvo301 12-03-2010, 08:21 PM This makes me wonder, are the sales to the I Love Lucy season volumes available? Did the sales for these releases stay pretty consistant from seasons 1-6 and how did the LDCH compare? I bought ILL as a complete series set. I expect many others did as well. So even if you can find sales volumes for ILL seasons 1-6 they won't accurately reflect the toal sales of ILL. Sales figures for The Lucy Show and Here's Lucy will of course be different since there are no complete series sets on the market nor has there been any suggestion that there ever will be. Retro TV Lover 12-03-2010, 11:53 PM Lucy in London was a special, it was not an episode of The Lucy Show. I know that it was a special, all I was saying was that the work spent on it probably made it considered as two episodes of work. It also had the Lucy character, aired in the same time slot, and was a continuation of an actual episode. Also, even nowadays when a show gets an hour long episode, it is still considered part of the series, so maybe Lucy in London was considered an hour long episode when it aired. I couls be wrong, but their are just too many similarities for it not to have been thought of as an episode (or two) at the time. I just do not think CBS would've allowed a 22 episode season in 66-67. McGillicuddy 12-04-2010, 04:02 AM I get your point. All I know is, I so hope season 5 is released, and Lucy in London is included on the set. rjt100 12-04-2010, 10:15 AM Don't worry, we will see season five. Currently "The Lucy Show" is ranked no. 18 in the top 100 orders on DVD.Empire.com. storrs19 12-04-2010, 12:23 PM I wondered about ILL as well. I bought each season individually myself. I wonder if sales for these modern garbage shows that air endlessly on 20 channels stay the same for each season that seemingly gets released every 3 months? I also wonder how Shout Factory makes a profit as they seem to release many lesser known shows and they do it quite timely. McGillicuddy 12-04-2010, 12:52 PM I wondered about ILL as well. I also wonder how Shout Factory makes a profit as they seem to release many lesser known shows and they do it quite timely. To put it simply, Shout! Factory is a small company, formed in recent years by people who actually know about (and actually are interested in) classic television. Yes, they have to make a profit, but that's not the sole purpose of their existance. Companies like CBS/Paramount or Sony, their home entertainment division is just a small fraction of their huge existance. All they can zero-in is $$$$$$$ on a short-term basis. As far as the MODERN GARBAGE SHOWS (), or contemporary series that are worth while, my guess is all the licensing for dvd releases is planned for at the same time syndication is. Now they are all ready projecting release dates for seasons of shows that were in the middle of. LittleRickyII 12-04-2010, 04:24 PM Don't worry, we will see season five. Currently "The Lucy Show" is ranked no. 18 in the top 100 orders on DVD.Empire.com. Please, let's be careful not to be too confident about these releases. I was told in no uncertain terms by one of the primary individuals working for CBS on the TLS DVDs that talk to the effect that CBS is committed to releasing seasons five and six are "completely false" (his words). I don't want people to have false hopes, or think they can put off buying the DVDs. This individual told me those seasons are "likely" to be released, but there is definitely not any guarantee, and no one should assume there is. CBS has obviously taken note of the strong sales for the The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour and first two seasons of The Lucy Show, and therefore is assuming those levels of sales will continue. If sales drop off significantly, and they have to revise their sales forecast and find it results in losses, they will not issue further releases. People need to keep buying the DVDs, and not put off purchasing them, if they want to ensure all seasons are released. I wasn't familiar with this DVDEmpire website until you mentioned it, and don't know how much sales volume they do, or what percentage of the DVD market they control, so I'm not sure that site is necessarily a good barometer for how successful sales of TLS are. I do think Amazon is probably the dominant online retailer of DVDs, and clearly this third season release has not performed as well on Amazon as the first two seasons, so we need to be careful about making broad assumptions about overall sales based on performance at one site. Incidentally, looking back, here's the peak performance on Amazon for each season, going back to the last I Love Lucy release (The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour): I Love Lucy Seasons 7-9 (The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour) All DVD Sales: #21 All television series on DVD: #1 Season One of The Lucy Show All TV DVD Sales: #95 Classic TV DVDs: #1 Comedy Boxed Sets: #9 Season Two of The Lucy Show All Television Shows: #39 Television Comedy: #11 Funny Families: #1 Comedy Box Sets: #9 Season Three of The Lucy Show All Movie and TV Shows: #898 All Movie and TV Comedy Boxed Sets: #80 The one consistent category for direct comparisons I see is Comedy Boxed Sets. I don't like that trend: Season One: #9; Season Two: #9; Season Three: #80. The message: Get out there and buy the Season Three DVD, folks! And encourage other Lucy fans to do the same, ASAP! Lower sales could alter CBS's sales forecast and impact future releases. Jude The Obscure 12-17-2010, 10:33 PM It was too bad we didn't get the entire episode of The Danny Kaye Show, since it is very unlikely we will see that series ever on DVD. |
