I'm afraid it doesn't mean much of anything, really.

It's just a little childhood rhyme that Penny and Garry Marshall knew.

Kind of like "Ring Around the Rosy."

I've never heard it so it must be a Bronx thing.

They shot it one night after a quick pilot after a Happy Days shoot and everyone was tired. They needed a catchy opening very quick. So Penny taught it to Cindy, thus the famous opening was born.

So I might have spelled the words wrong, but you knew what the hell I was talking about. Thanks anyway

I looked up "schlemiel" & "schlemazzle" (sp?) but could only find schlemiel, which means "an ineffectual, bungling person who habitually fails or is easily victimized"... still doesn't make too much sense. :)

I don't know but it sounds a bit Yiddish to me.

A schlemiel is a poor, bungling person, like Lone_Wolfette said. A schlemazel is the victim of something a schlemiel does. Such as, if the schlemiel were to spill his soup, the schlemazel would be the one he spilled the soup on. Hassenpfeffer is German for rabbit.
