View Full Version : Antenna TV Close to a deal with Comcast in NY Metro Area
TeeVeeCloset 11-09-2010, 06:28 PM Antenna TV is close to a deal for carriage on Comcast Cable in the NY/NJ Metropolitan Area, unfortunately those with Time Warner Cable & CableVision start preparing to get the attenna's out if you wish to see Antenna TV from launch on January 1, 2011! I am sorry but I am unable to name my source.....but wanted to pass on this info.
Pavan 11-09-2010, 06:33 PM That's GREAT news for me! I have Comcast of Union, NJ.
TeeVeeCloset 11-09-2010, 06:40 PM That's GREAT news for me! I have Comcast of Union, NJ.
So glad for you Pav....I have TWC, so I need to start preparing a set with antenna that I can also record....yikes!
bencasey 11-09-2010, 07:32 PM Cablevision never picks up anything from the start. I guess I have to buy a digital antenna and also a digital converter for my set as well.
Pavan 12-28-2010, 03:13 AM Hate to bump this back up, but wondering if TeeVeeCloset heard anything on Comcast in NJ?
TeeVeeCloset 12-28-2010, 10:33 AM Hate to bump this back up, but wondering if TeeVeeCloset heard anything on Comcast in NJ?
Yes but it looks like it won't be at launch, but now in addition to Comcast, Time Warner Cable says it will be "most likely" in the first quarter.
Pavan 12-28-2010, 11:17 AM I heard mid-January for Comcast in my area, so was wondering if you heard anything.
TeeVeeCloset 12-28-2010, 01:01 PM I heard mid-January for Comcast in my area, so was wondering if you heard anything.
They won't commit to anything except "first quarter" plus by FCC law, all channel additions/deletions need to be posted anywhere (even if its only the weather channel crawl) to notify the public 90 days in advance, but many times this is overlooked. I wish you luck, but I am setting up a exclusive TV with recordable device tomorrow and see what happens...I am worried about not getting much of a signal...with digital it usually is all or nothing, I don't really have any line of sight and no roof antenna. So thats why I hope my "reliable rumor" of Time Warner Cable of Northern/Southern Manhattan, Staten Island and New Jersey (where I am) is true.
I don't want to be too mysterious, but will say my info doesn't come from just phoning the cable companies CSR's, who don't have such knowledge and won't even take requests seriously....but that is all I can say....but I think my rep here, speaks for itself......
Pavan 12-28-2010, 01:25 PM I'll have a TV ready for WPIX 11.4. But have you tried ivi TV also? www.ivi.tv They have Me-TV, Me-Too and RTV on there. Possibly Antenna TV as well come Saturday. I'll find out.
Mr Stu 12-28-2010, 01:32 PM Hi TeeVeeCloset,
Does the reliable rumor (Time Warner NYC launches Antenna TV in 2011 first quarter) include Time Warner cable in Queens?
Thanks.
Pavan 12-28-2010, 02:18 PM TeeVeCloset, we finally got THIS tv around Dec. 1 (on ch. 250). But I never saw a notice for it and just found it on the guide one day. Did you know about this one?

No that's great for you, because I only really pay attention to my cable company Time Warner Cable in the metro area......and to the other poster, Queens would be included if TW negotiates a deal for carriage of Antenna TV.
Pavan 12-28-2010, 04:22 PM Got a rumbling that Comcast of Union, NJ is adding Antenna TV on Jan. 25. Anyway you can find any truth to that? I have contacted Antenna TV and Comcast corp, so hopefully they know.

I'll make a few calls and see what I can find out my good nj buddy! I'll need a few days because all the cable executives are off this week.
Pavan 12-28-2010, 04:38 PM Thanks a lot! I am trying to do a story on cable, particularly Comcast, for coverage of Antenna TV.
KJH278 12-28-2010, 10:32 PM Teevee what about Verzion Fios for the LOng Island Area
bencasey 12-30-2010, 03:58 AM Supposedly Cablevision will carry it from launch but now that all of the rare shows are pulled anyway, its not a big deal anymore. I'm just anxious to see if they will air cut episodes or not.
bencasey 12-30-2010, 04:03 AM I'll have a TV ready for WPIX 11.4. But have you tried ivi TV also? www.ivi.tv They have Me-TV, Me-Too and RTV on there. Possibly Antenna TV as well come Saturday. I'll find out.
Looks nice but how do you record shows from there?
TeeVeeCloset 12-30-2010, 11:19 AM I was so busy with various projects that I didn't notice the new program schedule information, BTW..their website still has the original schedule....I understand "the official statement blaming Sony" but to me there is more to this....I agree with the anger and fustration that other posters have expressed....(I wrote on another thread that I will be taking a break in 2011 from posting, but will update with any carriage info when I find out). Look we learned of this station as the other thread about Antenna TV began on 8/31/10, for them to say that Sony, one of the largest media companies in the country couldn't get the older series ready in time is either what we have known about Sony for a long time (their constant screwing up dvd releases) or yes Antenna TV (run by bankrupt Tribune) is not being run professionally. I had also mentioned awhile back that usually the first year of a station is its best before they ruin it or change directions (TV Land ran one hour versions of Sonny & Cher, had no commercials, ION actually ran Alice, Wonder Years, etc) I am predicting we will NEVER see these shows as promised, for Pav to say "later in the year" was like a gunshot to the chest...dramatic I know...lol....seriously "later in the year"....it's New Years Eve 2010! I think this is more about money spent on series for a station that many people won't even see at launch, so they are holding them back until cable companies and alike carry the station. I guess I should have known the old saying "If it sounds too good to be true, It usually is".....to promise us "Circus Boy", & "The Farmer's Daughter" was too good to be true. By the middle of the year, they probably will be running "Married With Children" 5 times a day! I guess I did pick the right time to stop posting....I was half way through setting up an isolated TV that I could record as well, and saw "This TV" yesterday for the first time here in the metro area, now I might as well disconnect it. Really this is a business disgrace on Tribune & Sony's part!
bencasey 12-30-2010, 11:35 AM I had also mentioned awhile back that usually the first year of a station is its best before they ruin it or change directions
They've actually set a record as the first network to go to crap and take all of the worthwhile shows off, BEFORE they go on the air. Like you said, it usually takes about a year or so before they become worthless. This one hasn't even gotten on yet and they're already worthless. Except for the morons who will watch a show on TV with commercials that they could get on DVD, I don't see who would care about this station now.
Du Mont 12-30-2010, 01:14 PM I must join in with how dismayed I am by Sony pulling back their content for this station, taking away the very elements that would have helped drive initial tune-in and sampling. I too fear a spiral down to the lowest common denominator of recent, highly-recognized reruns at the expense of vintage, rarely-seen television treasures.
I saw the previews on KTLA, and I have to say, the two episodes of 'The Burns and Allen Show' looked pretty crisp in picture and clean in sound for me. I was so disappointed that they pulled 'Iron Horse' and 'Circus Boy' and all those other rarities.
When Sony finally gets their act together, Antenna will probably have to do a re-boot of their launch to let people know they have something truly special on the air.

Any word on Verzion Fios for the LOng Island Area getting this Channel
1960'sTVfan 12-30-2010, 09:06 PM They've actually set a record as the first network to go to crap and take all of the worthwhile shows off, BEFORE they go on the air. I basically agree with your statement, but I'll give the station a few months on the air and see what happens. I am wondering if maybe they are having cold feet about shows like Circus Boy and Iron Horse, preferring to start the schedule with more familiar programs. I don't know if I can believe the excuse these shows "aren't ready yet", sounds fishy to me.
They are debuting the channel with Three Stooges and Benny Hill marathons. Not a good beginning at all in my opinion. Too much lowbrow humor for my taste. The Stooges and Benny Hill are nothing special, the Stooges especially have already been overplayed on TV, I won't tune in to these marathons.
As far as the regular schedule, nothing special there either as the unique shows have already been pulled at least temporarily. Just the same old familiar shows that have regularly been in syndication. There are just a few shows I'm interested in. It seems that Tribune Co. made note of the Me-TV success, and decided they want in on the action too.

AMEN.
Exactly! Thank you for summing up my feelings for Antenna TV as well. May I also add that the website is really crummy? I'm glad they're trying this, but I just don't see the hype anymore. This just shows what kind of company Tribune can be....way to plan.
MeTV on the other hand is top notch and run by a better company than Tribune. Tribune's financial record in recent years isn't great so I am not surprised they are changing things. And...they may not have many affiliates yet, but they have their ducks in a row. Good website, schedule is true, and it's backed by a company that has a good track record and experience in running digital channels AND, most importantly, classic TV....THIStv has done well. Antenna TV could take some lessons.
Pavan 12-31-2010, 03:51 AM Why compare Antenna and Me-TV? There is no point to that. Antenna TV hasn't even launched yet and Me-TV is still only in Chicago, Milwaukee and South Bend. Me-TV isn't airing unedited programming (which most of you want!!) and most of the Paramount shows they have aired are NOT rare and have been in syndication for years. The stuff Antenna TV pulled was way more rare and I think most of you here know that. Still, both Antenna TV and Me-TV are miles better than anything else out there right now so enjoy it.
If Antenna TV doesn't schedule those shows they had to pull, then you can complain, but for now give them a chance and a chance to put them back on the schedule. I don't see how a network that airs Father Knows Best, Hazel, Dennis the Menace is now considered not rare. Those haven't been aired much at all in recent years! Even Maude hasn't aired much and to schedule The Ropers and Three's a Crowd back on American syndication is rare. They will be rotating shows in and out, so be patient. I'm sure the average viewer who tunes in doesn't give a damn if Circus Boy was pulled, let alone what it is. Looking at their Facebook page, fans seem to be very active and happy about Antenna TV. I don't see the same reaction on Me-TV's FB page. To me, Antenna TV's shows are more mainstream, but they still have a very nice balance of shows from the 50s-90s. Both networks have something for everyone. They both can't have the same shows!
As for the financial trouble, who cares! Tribune is a major company still and they can afford Antenna TV. That is not even an issue here. They have done a great job with WGN America and most of you were happy with their scheduling in 2008-09 with some classic TV. Compton knows what he is doing. Both he and Sabin are awesome.
Tannerman 12-31-2010, 12:04 PM Pavan, I think questioning the motivations of Tribune and their execution is valid. They aren't exactly the most innovative of companies these days, and the primary reason for them to even look at doing something like Antenna TV was pretty much a copycat mentality with the success that Weigel has had here in Chicago with the MeTV/MeToo concept, as well as their national success with ThisTV.
Despite your conversations with Sean Compton for your interview, he is not well-liked for what he has done to Tribune properties. His changes to the flagship WGN have been a mess with questionable results. His attempts to bring in "controversial" talent like Bill Cunningham from Cincinnati to create talk shows have been disastrous. Let's not even start on how he's taken a prestegious station like WGN-AM and turned it into a laughing stock in under a year.
Like the rest of the thugs that have brought Tribune into the gutter, he's a Clear Channel/Jacor radio guy who pretty much has his job because of his connections to Randy Michaels and Sam Zell. Many of those figures have been fired or left on their own accord within the past month or so after the Wall Street Journal put a national spotlight on what those of us in Chicago have seen in person for the past couple of years. The fact that Compton is still around is embarrassing.
So yes, I think there is a reason to question Tribune's commitment to Antenna TV and their understanding of the vintage television market. I'm more than happy to be impressed by what I'm expecting to be not great, but time will tell. But I don't think you can easily separate the parent company from the product in this situation. It does effect ones perception.
1960'sTVfan 12-31-2010, 12:31 PM Shows that are unique to Antenna TV are: Hazel, Maude, Three's Company, The Nanny, Married With Children, Too Close For Comfort, and Here Come The Brides. Most of the other shows on Antenna's schedule are also airing on Me-TV or have previously aired on Me-TV.
Will be interesting to see if Antenna TV airs unedited versions of shows, or if they are edited for syndication.
I'll wait a few months to see if they change the schedule and air the shows they promised like Circus Boy, Iron Horse, Farmer's Daughter, Showcase 39, etc. If they do eventually add these shows to the schedule, it will be a step in the right direction.
Pavan 12-31-2010, 01:29 PM Those shows were only on in Chicago so not everyone saw them, not nationally like Antenna TV will be showing. Me-TV Network doesn't air those shows you mentioned.

It does effect ones perception.Yeah....being somewhat of a broadcast enthusiast myself, I have read some bad things about Tribune stations recently. WGN America is certainly not in its best state ever, either.
I have to disagree, though, and say I think the national MeTV announcement was a reaction to Tribune, as Antenna TV was announced in August...then right before Antenna TV launches, Weigel comes up with a national MeTV. Maybe a national MeTV had been in the works but wasn't announced and Tribune got wind of it, who knows. Just kind of odd. MeTV and Weigel are truly committed to classic television though and have an excellent history of programming it, which we've seen. Tribune is a newcomer, so I'll have an open mind, but just saying. The only reason Antenna TV is so widespread is because its owner (Tribune) owns big-market stations so they automatically get coverage that Weigel can't.
I could care less to see Circus Boy, Rin Tin Tin, or whatever those shows are (I'm not a Screen Gems fan besides BW and IDOJ), but the situation with them is a little interesting. Anyway, I'll just agree to disagree and move along. If I get Antenna TV, I will be watching for Maude and Too Close For Comfort, and hopefully NewsRadio. I hope they work their issues out.
Pavan 12-31-2010, 04:05 PM Chris, you only like Bewitched/Jeannie from Screen Gems because they have been played A LOT over the years, hence easier to find. Just like those Paramount shows like I Love Lucy, Beverly Hillbillies, Cheers, Happy Days, etc. Shows like Father Knows Best, Dennis the Menace, Here Come the Brides, Hazel haven't had the exposure in recent years. Most of the shows on Me-TV are shows that have been aired a lot, not that is a bad thing, but just saying. I know you prefer the Paramount stuff, that is all about a matter of opinion but I think both networks deserve a chance rather than talking negative of one. Let's see what happens first. I like the '70s and '80s Sony shows (these get good ratings), but I would love to have Me-TV, too. Antenna also has DLT stuff that hasn't been seen in years like Too Close for Comfort, the Three's Co spin-offs and even Benny Hill.
TeeVeeCloset 12-31-2010, 07:31 PM Pav You know I respect you my NJ buddy, but I think you can't really be objective here, since you have interviewed the people at the top of ME-TV and now the controversial Antenna TV....If Dennis The Menace wasn't just announced for DVD, I would be more excited, look I know we will get Three's A Crowd, The Ropers, the third unreleased season of The Flying Nun, and the abandoned Hazel... very cool.....I and many others were VERY EXCITED to see shows that will never be released on DVD and shows that haven't had any exposure in 40 years or more like Circus Boy with for those who don't know, starring The Monkees Micky Dolenz when he was a child......
Perfect for my last post for awhile, I will remain a member though and post when neccessary, as of 6PM on 12/31/10...I am seeing Antenna TV over the air in the NY Metro area on ch. 11.4 as they are running clips of the shows they will be running as a teaser....I have also successfully hooked it up to a DVD recorder. The recording and picture does look like I'm watching it off the internet though, but it is a stronger signal than I expected...without a roof antenna....I will return someday or when "Circus Boy" or "The Farmer's Daughter" is actually airing...lol....my best to you and HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE!
KJH278 12-31-2010, 11:07 PM TeeVee why won;t you answer my question about Verzion Fios in the Long Island Area
Pavan 01-01-2011, 12:01 AM KJH278, I don't think it will be added anytime soon on Fios. But ask them here: www.facebook.com/AntennaTV - they reply there.

I like the 70s and 80s Sony shows also - Sanford and Son, Good Times, All in the Family are a little blah (I like them though) since they're currently seen elsewhere in good timeslots, but they get HUGE props from me for Maude, Too Close For Comfort and Hazel. I like the shows I mentioned, though so I'm fine. I hope both MeTV and Antenna TV have success. Hopefully I will get both soon...it will probably take forever for me to get either, lol. The last time I think I saw anything besides Bewitched and Jeannie from Screen Gems was back in 2003....those episodes looked decent to me - perhaps certain episodes were remastered?
Did RTV have to go through all of this remastering and transferring when they started airing some of the ancient shows they air from NBCU? A lot of those hadn't been seen in YEARS either. The quality on them is decent.
That sucks, and what makes it worse Verzion Fios is adding Oprah wimpheys channelI would suggest an amplified over the air antenna. I have a great Philips one. I have no idea how far you are from NYC, but I would try that. They work for stations 20-30 miles away at least. Walmart, Best Buy, most places that have electronics have them and they are not that expensive.

I'd love to know where you are getting your information from when you say ME-TV isn't airing unedited programming? Maybe the local Chicago feed, which had shows from all of the studios had cut shows but my friend is pulling in the national feed on his satellite dish and so far he has told me that Dobie Gillis, Gunsmoke, Bonanza, and My Three Sons are all complete. Also, 12 O'Clock High, which had only been available on pre-cut tape at 46 minutes for the last 30 years is complete and coming in at 51 minutes. He hasn't checked some of the other shows yet since they have at least a season or two on DVD and they started all of the series from the beginning. But at some point we are hoping to pick up Cannon, Streets of San Francisco and some other stalled series. So far the only cut shows we have seen are Branded and Guns of Will Sonnett. Petticoat Junction we picked up a few years ago when TV Land Canada ran it through uncut. Hell, they may even have the Odd Couple without all of the lousy music cuts that Paramount did on DVD.
Now, looking at Antenna's schedule and the shows you mention, Father Knows Best will be complete on DVD soon and Dennis the Menace is about to start coming out. Besides, it ran on Nick and Nite and was uncut there so no big deal either way. Hazel will be nice to get, if its complete. Don't know the deal with Maude but the last time we checked an episode off air, it was coming in at 21:50, cut by over 3 and a half minutes. If that's the same version on Antenna, then who cares if it runs or not. Right now, as the schedule stands today, the only real shows of interest would be Hazel and Maude (if complete) and the last seasons of Flying Nun and Here Come the Brides. Maybe Too Close for Comfort if they aren't 22 minute hack jobs, which I doubt since that was what they gave Rhino for the first season DVD release and that's likely all they have on DigiBeta. And its completely one-dimensional, with nothing but sitcoms and no dramas. At least ME-TV has a good mix of both while Antenna has none of the Sony library dramas. But until we actually see the network on Monday (although Cablevision may not have it up until mid-week), we may be arguing over nothing. From what I've been told by a friend in Chicago who has been watching Me-TV for years, all of the Sony shows they have are cut and cut badly. So, if they are going to be running the same here, then they could potentially be as worthless as Chopmark is.
BTW, its not an important show for me so I'm perfectly happy with my ABC recordings of Three's A Crowd from when it aired in the early 80s.
KJH278 01-01-2011, 01:12 PM I would suggest an amplified over the air antenna. I have a great Philips one. I have no idea how far you are from NYC, but I would try that. They work for stations 20-30 miles away at least. Walmart, Best Buy, most places that have electronics have them and they are not that expensive.
I;m not going to buy one just to watch one channel, Why could'nt Verzion fios get Antena TV and and not the oprah wimpfrey network
Pavan 01-01-2011, 01:38 PM I'd love to know where you are getting your information from when you say ME-TV isn't airing unedited programming?

I have been watching some Me-TV Network on ivi TV. I haven't had the chance to watch a whole lot yet, but I have noticed stuff like Brady Bunch and Happy Days with some editing being done. Gilligan looks unedited on Chicago's Me-Too, though. So I should have said Me-TV is airing a mix of edited/unedited programming. My mistake. Antenna TV is going to have a mix of edited/unedited programming just like Me-TV (hopefully more unedited, than edited). They both air what they are given, as they don't edit anything themselves (because that is costly to edit and they don't have the money like TV Land to edit). Three Stooges is coming in great on Antenna TV--unedited and limited commercials. Hopefully Benny Hill is 48-51 minutes tomorrow. Bigger test is Monday. Hopefully most are unedited.
I understand completely your reasonings about having shows complete, but do you think the average viewer knows/cares? They are not going to have episodes taped from Nick at Nite in the '80s/early 90s of Dennis the Menace. You're not the average viewer. I think we all should be glad about both ATV and MeTV. Because for the first time in a long time, we are getting shows that haven't been seen in years and possibly unedited, too. Let's wait and see! This is not TV Land! And for the comment that TV Land was only good its first year, is not adequate. They were good for at least a few more years after that. ATV and MeTV have a brighter future because they are NOT cable networks, so they have less pressure to deliver in ratings and don't care as much for ads (and they aren't editing anything themselves). And by the way, I was assured of shows like Burns & Allen and Farmer's Daughter will be added on ATV. So mark my words. We have a chance to get some gems here in the future (Love on the Rooftop is being considered).

I actually watched 3 Love on a Rooftop episodes last night! That would be great as that show has never run anywhere in the taping era. At least Occasional Wife and Camp Runamuck aired on HA! and Second Hundred Years, Temperatures Rising, Girl With Something Extra and Bridget Loves Bernie were on USA Network so we had a chance to pick them up. Most of Rooftop is out there on film as is The Paul Lynde Show but those would all be great pickups. But right now the shortest run series I see them with is Iron Horse (season and a half). As for shows like Gilligan's Island and Brady Bunch that are all out on DVD, well, anyone who cares about those shows and is still watching them on TV in the year 2011, they deserve to see edited shows if they are too cheap to buy the sets.
The Burns and Allens that air on ME-TV local in Chicago all have the closings where George and Gracie come out on the stage edited out. I hope they are going to be re-transferring them for Antenna but I'm thinking its likely for them to re-do them if they are already transferred to tape.
I cannot believe how some act like it's nothing special when a show is aired nationally since it's on DVD, much less think people are familiar enough with some of these shows that haven't been seen in years to buy them on DVD. Not all of us can afford to buy everything on DVD. I have a very limited library myself and rely on networks like these to deliver the shows for me. And while I dislike editing, if it's done and there is nothing the channel can do about it, I understand. I appreciate channels like MeTV, Antenna TV, RTV, thisTV, etc. offering classic shows...and heck, it's even free. Used to be that you had to subscribe to cable to see classics, and they treat those shows even worse and barely air them anymore.
Maybe I'm in a minority, but I don't have $$$ to go out and buy everything I like on DVD and not watch them on TV. For those that do, I'm happy for you.
As for TV Land, they were good until around 2003, and I even enjoyed them up until 2007ish.

The Gunsmoke episodes on MeTV (national) are the cut 46-minute versions. The originals run 49-50 minutes.
