JamesG 10-29-2010, 08:43 PM SAW Producer Revs Another Saw: Leatherface 3D

By: MrDisgusting
With the SAW franchise coming to an end, producer Mark Burg will be joining Carl Mazzocone in bringing The Texas Chainsaw Massacre back to theaters.
Word has it that Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures are putting the finishing touches on Debra Sullivan and Adam Marcus' screenplay for Leatherface 3D.
We're told that the plot picks up immediately where Tobe Hooper's original left off before flashing forward 35 years. There's buzz of a "cult" involved.
Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures acquired the rights to Leatherface once Platinum Dunes and New Line Cinema passed on making a second sequel to the 2003 reboot.
Marcus wrote and directed Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday.

Lionsgate is reportedly in talks with director John Lussenhop to bring him on to the next chapter in the Chainsaw Massacre legacy.
Plot details for Leatherface 3D are under wraps, but supposedly it picks up precisely where Tobe Hooper's original Texas Chainsaw Massacre left off, before flashing forward to present day.
Despite this, the flick is meant to be a sequel to the 2003 remake from Platinum Dunes.

THR confirmed that John Luessenhop (Takers) is in talks to direct Lionsgate's Leatherface 3D, the sequel to the Platinum Dunes produced Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake that was released via New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures.
They add that Carl Mazzocone is producing the movie, which hopes to launch a new franchise featuring Leatherface and his family of cannibals.
Production is set for June.
Debra Sullivan, Adam Marcus and Stephen Susco have turned in drafts the third Chainsaw flick that supposedly picks up immediately where Tobe Hooper's original left off before flashing forward 35 years.

JamesG 05-10-2011, 12:28 PM EXCLUSIVE: We've Got the Insane Plot Crunch for Leatherface 3D!
Tuesday, May 10, 2011
By: MrDisgusting
Now that John Luessenhop is nearly attached to direct Leatherface 3D, casting is currently underway for a June shoot in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Penned by Debra Sullivan, Adam Marcus and Stephen Susco, with the most recent drafts by Kirsten Elms and Luessenhop, the seventh incarnation is a direct sequel to Tobe Hooper's classic 1974 film that follows the lead character, Heather, who along with her friends, travel to Texas in order to collect an inheritance.
The spin? What would you do if you found out your cousin was Leatherface, and he was now YOURS? - As explained to me by an insider.
It should also be noted that whomever lands the lead role of "Heather" will be locked in for multiple sequels, along with the town's "Sheriff Hooper," and his trusty sidekicks "Fransworth" and "Deputy Carl Hartman."
It sounds like they're going with the same old song and dance instead of truly attempting something original. But I am intrigued by the concept of Heather "owning" Leatherface.
Hopefully they don't drop that angle and turn it into a horror chase film...

Nu Image is at the Cannes Film Festival promoting a number of titles including The Expendables 2 and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D.
We've got some early sales artwork for the latter which confirms the film's title (early reports said it would be called Leatherface 3D, which is not the case).
What's interesting here - besides the font use - is that it appears the film is on track for a summer 2012 release. Of course, that could change.
John Luessenhop will direct the film this summer for distributor Lionsgate.

It is to be directed by John Luessenhop this coming June in Shreveport, Louisiana, was penned by Debra Sullivan, Adam Marcus and Stephen Susco, with the most recent drafts by Kirsten Elms and Luessenhop.

July 19, 2011
Lionsgate has just passed along the following press release for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D. New details and confirmations below!
Gunnar Hansen, the original Leatherface who has never acted in another Texas Chainsaw franchise film, is set to appear in a cameo, with Marilyn Burns, the original film’s lead actress, playing the role of Verna Carson.
John Dugan will also be reprising the role of the grandfather.

Playing Leatherface will be newcomer Dan Yeager.
Director John Lussenhop knew he was perfect for the role immediately, after a chance meeting. He describes the 6’ 6” actor as having “huge farm boy arms, a brooding brow. He’s quiet, circumspect, and immediately struck a menacing chord with me. After five minutes, I could no longer think of anyone else for the role.”
Acclaimed R&B singer Trey Songz makes his film debut as Heather’s (Alexandra Daddario's) boyfriend Ryan and Keram Malicki-Sanchez will be Ryan’s friend.

Noted character actor Richard Riehle will play Sawyer's family attorney Farnsworth.

Announced previously:
Beloved character actor Bill Moseley, who played the role of Choptop in Tobe Hooper’s 1983 sequel, will play Drayton Sawyer in this film. Moseley will be standing in for Jim Siedow, who previously played the part before his passing in 2003.
Director Luessenhop explains how “Moseley is the perfect choice to capture some of the essence that Siedow had brought to the character.”
Alexandra Daddario has been cast in the lead female role of Heather Miller.
The story centers around Heather, as she makes a trip to small-town Texas to collect her inheritance, unaware that her inheritance includes a live item – her cousin, the notorious serial killer Leatherface.
Tania Raymonde is Heather's best friend Nikki.
Scott Eastwood will portray Deputy Carl Hartman, a young officer who is battling a powerful attraction to Heather while hunting Leatherface.

Gunnar Hansen spoke to an audience at an event in Nova Scotia about The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D.
He spilled the beans on how the sequel is intended to open:
"The opening of the movie is the last scene of the original movie and so it starts right at the beginning. In fact, they're using some of the footage of Leatherface, of me, dancing, at the beginning. They're using that footage as the opening shot, I think.
I read the script, it looks pretty good. I can say that because I'm extremely critical of the sequels and the remakes. This one, you know, is not what I would have written, but I didn't write it."

JamesG 10-04-2011, 06:00 PM EXCL: Tania Raymonde Talks Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D
Source: Ryan Turek, Managing Editor
October 4, 2011
"I think it's going to be great," Raymonde told Shock today.
"It's cool to be part of such a cult phenomenon like 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre'. I never saw the 2003 remake or the prequel. I saw the original and it scared the crap out of me, deeply disturbing me."
The actress said she was a bit scared and nervous to take on the film.
"I've never done a horror movie before. [writer's note: I guess she doesn't consider 2009's Elsewhere horror] It was a little traumatic because this is a very intense movie. People expect there to be some tongue-in-cheek, but there's not.
This movie takes off where the original started and stands on its own as a thriller and origin story. There's something epic and scary about it as it delves into this disturbed mind that is not right. It's got a lot of action, so it's cool."
Raymonde plays Nikki, best friend to Alexandra Daddario's Heather character.
In the film, directed by John Luessenhop, Heather heads to Texas with her friends to collect an inheritance, unaware that Leatherface comes with the package.
"Nikki is a party girl, but she's got a lot of balls," said Raymonde. "There are some moments toward the middle of the movie where she kicks some ass and isn't the typical slutty best friend. There are a lot of unorthodox things about this movie that are original and new. I don't think people are going to be disappointed."
Tania Raymonde is currently kicking ass on MTV horror-comedy series "Death Valley".
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D opens October 5, 2012.

Source: Ryan Turek, Managing Editor
November 2, 2011
In regards to an "official" plot synopsis for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D, things have been rather quiet.
Well, I found a one-page story breakdown at the American Film Market, and I think it would be downright wrong to run this spoiler-filled play-by-play. It reads very much like a script treatment.
The set-up to the synopsis is safe, however, so I'll share that here:
"Twenty years ago, the town of Newt, Texas exacted vengeance on the Sawyer family for their role in assisting and concealing murders committed by the chainsaw-wielding maniac Jeb Sawyer, aka "Leatherface."
The entire family was presume killed when Burt Hartman led the townspeople to burn down their farm house, but the Sawyer infant survived and was secretly taken away by two of the vigilante townies, Gavin and Arlene, and raised their daughter Heather.
It's not until she's in her twenties that Heather learns that she's adopted. A lawyer for her grandmother tracks her down with word she's been left an inheritance. Angry at her parents for lying to her, she sets out for Texas on a road trip with her boyfriend Ryan, friends Nikki and Kenny, and Darryl, a hitchhiker they pick up on the way."
Ultimately, Leatherface shows up when this team arrive in Newt, Texas and he raises some hell.
As I said, to share much more would be ruining a lot of the twists, but I figured you'd like to hear the lead-in...

JamesG 11-30-2011, 04:36 PM Exclusive: Tania Raymonde Talks The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D
11/30/11
by Alyse Wax
Due out in 2012, this new TCM is being shot in 3D, takes place immediately following the end of Tobe Hooper's 1974 original, and ignores every other TCM film since.
With the working title of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D, the flick boasts a number of Chainsaw alums in cameo roles, including the original Leatherface Gunnar Hansen and lone survivor Marilyn Burns.
Aside from that, the studio is keeping a tight lid on any further details.
We chatted recently with Tania Raymonde ("Death Valley") who stars in TCM 3D opposite Alexandria Daddario (Bereavement). She couldn't tell us much, so salivate over what she did share.
Tell me about Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I heard that they recreated the house.
Which house, the Sawyer house?
Yeah.
Yeah, it's cool. They rebuilt the entire house. They actually built two houses: the house that Heather inherits from Leatherface, which is where a lot of present-day action takes place, but then I think they rebuilt the Sawyer house from the original movie - then they burned it down! They spent two months building it - it was an exact replica. It was pretty cool.
That movie was really eerie. That was a crazy experience. I told myself that I didn't want to do another horror movie after this because it sort of traumatized me! It was intense.
The filming of it, or the subject matter?
Texas Chainsaw Massacre always scared me a lot. I haven't seen any of the remakes; just the original, and there is something deeply disturbing about that movie. It really bothered me, even before I got involved in this one. Then I watched it again before we started shooting, and it still scares me.
This is an intense... it's interesting because it's got some thriller elements in it. I think they are trying to relaunch the franchise and they anticipate making two or three movies out of Texas Chainsaw, but beyond that, it is very disturbing.
Disturbingly gruesome, but not in an exploitative way. It sort of delves into the soul of a demented person. He really tortures these poor kids. It's awful.
What is your role?
The main character is Heather; I play Heather's best friend. She is a very flamboyant, promiscuous girl named Nikki. She just wants to have a good time. She loves Heather.
Heather and Nikki and some friends go on this road trip in an old VW van to go help Heather collect her inheritance. They are on their way to New Orleans and they stop in Texas and they meet Leatherface. They don't fare so well, unfortunately.
And hilarity ensues.
Yeah, exactly. But it is sort of a thriller, and it is almost an action movie at times. It's not like your typical "torture porn" or "gory for the sake of being gory" that you see in a lot of current scary movies.
It's actually well thought-out and put together. I think it is a cool story and creepy as hell and people will really dig it.

February 24, 2012
Finding a release date can be tricky for any horror movie, though one has to figure that October is still the best month for the genre as seen by the success of the SAW and Paranormal Activity movies and dozens of others, including Marcus Nispel's 2003 TCM remake.
That's why it's kind of surprising that ERC is reporting Lionsgate has moved their upcoming reboot of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D back three months from its original pre-Halloween release date of October 5 to the first weekend of 2013 with a release on January 4.
The ink on that release date change hadn't even dried before Summit jumped on the now-open October 5 as the new release date for Scott Derrickson's found footage movie Sinister starring Ethan Hawke and Vincent D'Onofrio.

JamesG 03-15-2012, 10:59 PM Gunnar Hansen Talks Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D
Posted by Michael Gingold
Mar 15, 2012
Gunnar Hansen told us his new book CHAIN SAW CONFIDENTIAL, and that’s not the only way the original Leatherface is contributing to the SAW lore in the 21st century.
He also has a cameo in the upcoming TCM 3D, a part he also discussed with us.
“It’s very three-dimensional,” he laughs when Fango queried him about the role at last weekend’s Monster Mania convention in New Jersey.
“I can’t really say too much, because they’re being very secretive. I can say that I’m not playing Leatherface, but fans of the original movie who know it well will appreciate the character I play because of who he is, and also because of what he has to say. It’s a real ironic kind of thing when you realize what’s going on.
Plus, there’s a little bit in there that I did basically as a reference to Leatherface from the first film. I think fans will see that.”
Directed by John Luessenhop, starring Alexandra Daddario, Tania Raymonde and Bill Moseley (TCM 2) and set for release by Lionsgate January 4, TCM 3D “is a true sequel to the original; they pick up right after that movie ends,” Hansen tells us.
“It’s like they just kept the cameras rolling and kept right on going. I haven’t seen any footage other than what we were shooting, so I don’t know what the rest of the movie looks like, but the part I was in, they did a great job of capturing the feel and the atmosphere from the first movie. It has that grittiness and density and tension, which I was very impressed with. They made every effort to try to capture that.
And of course, it helped that we were shooting in August in Shreveport, Louisiana, which looks amazingly like central Texas. My first day on the set was 104 degrees and my last day was 108. So Mother Nature helped out.”
In other words, it was like being back in that house in Texas in 1973, filming the dinner scene with the windows blacked out and the lights inside raising the temperature past the 100-degree mark.
“Oh, man, it was like, I was walking around thinking, ‘Is it 1973 or 2011?’ But they did a great job, so I’m actually excited about this one. You know my opinion of the sequels and the remake, but I’m actually looking forward to seeing this movie.
I want to see what we ended up with, because I think it has a true shot at being terrific.”
The IMDB indicates that Hansen will also appear in archival footage from the Tobe Hooper classic, but the actor himself isn’t certain what that will entail.
“When I signed up to do the film, I agreed to that,” he notes. “This is nothing I know for sure, but I would guess that they’re using something from the dance at the end.”
He did get a chance to view the costume and mask worn by new Leatherface Dan Yeager, but can’t spill any beans there.
What he can say is that “they made a pretty-woman mask, because they needed it for the continuation. It has to follow at the beginning, and that mask is dead-on. After that, the movie goes its own way.”
Hansen isn’t the only member of the classic ensemble to return to the TCM universe for the dimensional sequel.
“Marilyn Burns is in it, and plays a different character, as obviously I do,” he says, “and John Dugan is back as Grandpa. John and I had some stuff where we were together for the shoot, and then they brought Marilyn back for the media day and timed it so she’d be there when John and were working.
So we had a great chance to catch up with each other and reminisce about the filming. Then they had a day where they were shifting the 1st-unit/2nd-unit schedules, so we all had that day off, and we managed to find a pub near the hotel and sat there from about 12 noon to 5:30 just sipping beers and talking.
That was great for us. We really appreciated that the schedule worked out so that we could hang out.”
Even though the latest TCM filmed with the latest 3D technology, Hansen appreciates that Luessenhop followed in the stylistic footsteps of its four-decade-old forebear.
"Because it’s 3D, right away some things were very different, because they were running several cameras simultaneously that were computer-controlled and they had all this powerful technology. But certainly, John was looking to continue the feel of the original, and the way he blocked the stuff we did, it felt like an extension of what we had done.
He was really keyed into doing that, and in fact, right when I got on set and before we started filming anything, I said to him, ‘Look, I’ve got this idea I’d like to do. Is that OK with you?’ I explained it, and he went, ‘Oh yeah, that’d be great, absolutely.’ I think the reason he was willing to do it was because of the way it ties into the first movie. And like I said, while I was just there for a few days, the stuff I was involved with—man, I was impressed. And it was just a blast to be back on a TCM set.”
Hansen also had a chance to talk with Yeager, his onscreen successor.
“We chatted for a while, and I liked the guy. He was intense, very quiet and thoughtful, and asked me questions, because I think he really wanted to find out from me what I’d been doing, and for the character to be consistent. You know, in the other sequels, the writers just didn’t care about that.
For each TCM, they basically wrote a different character. The Leatherface in 2 is a different person than in the first film, and the one in III is a totally different person, and the remake…they’re all different individuals. It’s like the writers were saying, ‘We’re not going to worry about the first one or the second one,’ or whatever.
And here, he was real aware of the first one and wanted to catch some of that sense. So I’m hoping.”
Having turned down financially disrepectful offers to appear in previous sequels, Hansen was thrilled that TCM 3D’s creators were more appreciative.
“The basic thing has always been, ‘Hey, let’s get Gunnar in our movie!’ but then they would say, ‘He’s not worth anything, because of course, anybody could play the role.’ And then I’d say, ‘Well, hey, if I’m not worth anything to ya, then no thanks.’
But for this one, they truly wanted me in it, and I felt great about that. I was very happy that they wanted me in their movie, and wanted to make that happen. So I was delighted.”

You’re in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D. You famously played Chop-Top in Part 2, what’s it like returning to that universe as a different character?
I had a ball playing Drayton Sawyer. Once again the producer is good old Carl Mazzocone. He’s been putting my younger daughters through public school and I thank him for that [laughs]. I saw a little bit of the movie when I was doing ADR. I went in and saw a couple of scenes and it looks awesome. I imagine that long saw blade will benefit from 3D technology.
I had a moment where I was laying on the floor by the front door of the faithfully recreated Chainsaw house. I was covered in fake blood and chicken feathers. This was in Louisiana last summer so it was probably 103 degrees and 90% humidity. I’m laying on the floor with all of the crew stepping over me and dragging cables over me. It was oppressively hot. And I looked behind me and saw the front door of the house with the saw blade through it, and I’m laying on my side and looking up the stairs where Grandpa is. Then I look down and the metal sliding door is open right there with all these skulls hanging inside. And I just had to think, “my God this is awesome!”
And I flashed back to 1976 when I saw Texas Chainsaw Massacre on a double bill with Enter The Dragon in an old theater in Boston. And it blew my mind the first time I saw it. And fast forward more than 30 years and there I am laying at the bottom of the stairs at the Chainsaw house. And it was a moment of gratitude, I couldn’t believe I was there.

Lionsgate has revealed the teaser poster, via Fangoria, for Texas Chainsaw 3D (looks like the "the" and "massacre" were chopped from the title).
The film is still on track for a January 4th release and we're told a trailer is not too far off from being released either.

What began 38 years ago as Tobe Hooper’s stark imagining of an American nightmare has come full circle with Texas Chainsaw 3D, a direct sequel to the original picture, this time helmed by John Luessenhop.
Pictured below is heroine Heather Miller (Alexandra Daddario) on the run from the latest Leatherface (Dan Yeager) in Texas Chainsaw 3D, which arrives January 4 from Lionsgate.
With throngs of voracious fans quick to dismiss certain sequels and remakes in this franchise, it becomes apparent that Luessenhop knows and respects that he is treading on (un)holy ground.
“I’m a huge fan of what Hooper did, particularly with the original,” Luessenhop tells Fango, “and it’s a bit daunting to step into their footsteps. The last thing I wanted was a 1990s horror movie. What I’ve tried to do is make a traditional horror film for the first 60 minutes, which is what I think will keep you engaged. I’m trying to give you enough time so that you can get to know the characters before they reach the state of horror.”
Despite the infernal heat on the Louisiana location, Luessenhop remains composed and soft spoken, traits of a director with a strong vision for the film being conceived.
In stark contrast, producer Carl Mazzocone comes across larger-than-life, almost relishing the heat with an expression of merriment across his face. His opening remarks are suddenly drowned out by a chainsaw screaming to life.
“Now you’re on a TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE set! That’s called ‘warming up the saw,’” Mazzocone beams. Comedic timing aside, he speaks of ushering 3D into existence with a refreshing candor.
“I thought Hooper’s original was really amazing, and then the subsequent prequels, sequels and remakes were never of the same ilk. I’m really proud of what we’re doing here, because I think for the very first time, we’re taking Leatherface out of the little rural house and we’re trying to introduce him into the public. The goal is really to deliver the best 3D horror monster movie of modern day.”

Lionsgate has provided Bloody Disgusting with an incredible new look at Texas Chainsaw 3D, which continues the legendary story of the homicidal Sawyer family, picking up where Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic left off in Newt, Texas, where for decades people went missing without a trace.
The below still depicts Leatherface, played by Dan Yeager, soaking in his collection of chainsaws. Which will he choose for his 2013 victims?

We haven't seen "Grandpa" in too many press materials for Texas Chainsaw 3D, but that is remedied in a new image released for the film.
Grandpa is once again played by John Dugan, who essayed the role in Tobe Hooper's original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
You'll also find a better look at Bill Moseley as Drayton Sawyer and leading lady Alexandria Daddario.
