View Full Version : Was There A Real Feud Between Carol Burnett & Mary Tyler Moore???
Brian Damage 10-21-2010, 10:31 AM I read somewhere there was some animosity between the two back in the 70's. Not sure if it is true or not. Did they ever work together on any projects?

McGillicuddy 10-21-2010, 05:23 PM I always wondered that myself. I've seen them both on CBS Anniversary Specials or the TVLand Awards, but they never have appeared on stage together, that I know of. They seem to have alot of mutual friends such as Dick Van Dyke and Betty White. I don't think I've ever seen one speak of the other in any interview.
I've never heard of any animosity between them, but, to me, they always seemed estranged from each other.
LittleRickyII 10-22-2010, 08:29 PM I've never, ever heard of such a thing. What is the basis for this rumor, just because they never worked together? Did Vicki Lawrence ever work with Mary Tyler Moore? Did Ed Asner ever work with Carol Burnett? If we were to assume two people who have never worked together must be feuding, then every person in Hollywood must be in a feud with someone.
McGillicuddy 10-22-2010, 08:49 PM It's so interesting to see Mary and Carol in pictures together. Thanks for posting :cool:

80sTrivia 10-23-2010, 12:19 PM Great photographs of two of my all-time favorite ladies together! :)

Meaning there never was one?
PGood97041 10-23-2010, 08:27 PM Those pics are fantastic, and I'm glad to see that there doesn't appear to be anything but admiration between these two lovely ladies and brilliant talents!
old grouch 10-23-2010, 10:54 PM I wish they would find a project to do together some time. That would be cool.

Just my sarcastic way of saying that a feud between the two sounds like a bunch of made up BS.

Exactly. And it makes me uncomfortable when baseless controversies like this are brought up. It would be one thing if one of them had made an unflattering comment about the other that was on the record, but here there appears to be nothing on the record, no eyewitness account, nothing; thus, no basis for making this assertion. That makes it nothing but idle gossip which doesn't warrant a discussion.
If anything, there seems to be a world of reasons why these two women could be friends. Think of all that they have in common:
1) They are first two showbiz superstars whose careers were created by television;
2) They are from the same generation, very close in age, and got their career start in the '50s;
3) They both rose to national prominence as supporting players on a popular TV show starring a male performer (Mary on The Dick Van Dyke Show; Carol on The Garry Moore Show);
4) Both reached their career peaks at around the same time, starring in their own self-named TV shows on the same network (CBS) and, for awhile, on the same night (Saturday);
5) Both had their shows produced by their husbands at the time (Grant Tinker and Joe Hamilton);
6) Both had a protegee from their respective show spin-off into their own successful series (Valerie Harper in Rhoda; Vicki Lawrence in Mama's Family);
7) Both have a fondness for performing in a musical comedy/variety format (of course, only Carol succeeded at that);
8) They have both tried, but not succeeded, at a follow-up television career after their 1970s success (Mary in Mary, The Mary Tyler Moore Hour, Mary, Annie McGuire, and New York News; Carol in Carol and Company);
9) Both made a mark in dramatic performances after making a name in comedy (most notably, Mary in Ordinary People, and Carol in Friendly Fire);
10) Both ended up divorcing their producer husbands;
11) Both are now married to much, much younger men (Mary's is 17 years her junior, Carol's is 23 years her junior);
12) Sadly, both have tragically lost a child.
PGood97041 10-26-2010, 03:25 PM I'm sensing lately that a few of these topics are put out there solely to increase traffic, and there's nothing wrong with that.
If I see a topic I'm interested in, I will comment on it.
Where I think this particular thread went wrong is use of the word "feud".
Why not have phrased it "Why so little collaboration between Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Burnett?" or something along those lines.
I think "feud" went too far, but I DO think that it's a legitimate question about why these fantastic ladies, whose careers WERE somewhat similar, never or rarely worked together.
P.S. But, again, loved the B + W pics and am glad to see that they seem to have a good relationship.

:yeahthat
I think those are all valid points, and I agree that the word "feud" was wrong. Now had the question been "Why did CB and MTM appear together on The Family Feud?" then the use of feud would have been appropriate!
I'm kidding about that, but I do agree that word choice makes all the difference.
likewow 11-19-2010, 06:32 PM Those pictures are great, especially the first one!
Interestingly, I've wondered about their relationship too. They were onstage together during the 'Funny Women of Television' clip special some years ago, at the end. Carol looked at Mary, but Mary didn't make eye contact. It just got me wondering.
I've heard Mary talk about Carol's variety show in interviews. Sure would've liked to see them work together!
Anna Karenina 01-25-2017, 06:54 PM They also both revered and were friends with Lucille Ball.
LittleRickyII 01-26-2017, 01:43 AM They also both revered and were friends with Lucille Ball.
And "McGillicuddy" mentioned they Mary and Carol were both friends of Betty White. And so was Lucy. Here are some more photos documenting all those friendships.
LittleRickyII 01-26-2017, 01:49 AM And here's one of Lucy and Mary (among others) showing up to honor Carol Burnett. Yeah, that's some feud Mary and Carol had going. :crazy:
Anna Karenina 01-26-2017, 11:57 AM That gallery of pictures is such a treat to look at. Thanks! It is good to see them all hanging out like real friends. :wave:
Here is another one that is cute. Adding Julie Andrews to the clubhouse! :)

LittleRickyII 01-26-2017, 08:32 PM Julie Andrews' friendship with Carol Burnett is legendary. If Julie Andrews is going to be brought into the fold, let's go full circle.
LittleRickyII 01-26-2017, 08:49 PM Carol Burnett delivered this statement yesterday about Mary Tyler Moore: "She will be so missed. She was a pioneer on television and also one of the sweetest, nicest people I ever knew."
And here is some audio of Carol Burnett remembering Mary Tyler Moore on Good Morning America: http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/carol-burnett-ed-asner-remember-mary-tyler-moore/story?id=45060621
Yong Fang 01-31-2017, 11:35 PM Mary was a babe, Carol, not so much....(dodging tomatoes and rocks from my sexist comment...)
