These four series join the already previously announced series Doogier Howser and The Wonder Years. http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2010/09/hub-acquires-more-sitcoms-happy-days.html

As a reminder, The Hub is replacing Discovery Kids. So if you have that network, you'll have The Hub come 10/10/10.

This really is great news, and it looks like The Hub will be the best network for 2010! It's too bad they aren't doing the night-type stuff 24 hours a day (we have enough kids channels as it is), but I won't be greedy. All of these shows that have been off the air for too long - Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, Family Ties, Wonder Years, Doogie Howser, Batman....hopefully Family Ties does well because it didn't do great on Nick at Nite, TV Land, or its 2-week run on Hallmark. I just hope they don't sell out and go to newer shows after a little while.

It's funny they don't mention the classic shows on their website. Maybe they're going to launch a separate site for the evening/nighttime block? I wonder if it will be branded differently?

October will be a great classic TV month - The Hub launching plus Jeannie and Bewitched on TV Land (and Good Times/Jeffersons in the afternoon)! And I get it on cable where I am now! Hallmark can have their Martha. :D

It's a possibility because they're going to have a block in the daytime called Hub Bub to show preschool programming and it has it's own site http://hubbub.com/. So maybe it could be called something like Family Hub.

None of those shows are listed on the Hub's main website, so I bet the evening will be done differently. Thanks for the link!

I wouldn't mind seeing Home Improvement on this channel eventually since Viacom doesn't seem too interested in it. It would be an awesome fit.

I think Who's The Boss? would be a good fit for the night line-up. I'm only saying because we all know that Hallmark won't keep it on forever and you never know when they decide it's time to pull thing off.

This network will only be good if they don't chop up the shows and don't squeese the closing credits in a corner, or speed them up over the closing scene.

I'm just hoping the strategy sticks. All too often, we get a new channel that relies on classic programming until they can grow the brand (ie original programming0 and then away goes the good stuff. These are shows that are not being exploited elsewhere and have not been seen in a while, so here's hoping for its success.

Yeah, that blog post wins post of the month in my opinion! Anticipating just one sitcom addition and get three, plus Batman (all rare shows that haven't been syndicated in recent years) in addition to Wonder Years and Doogie Howser is just incredible. My only criticism is I'd like to see 2 episodes of Wonder Years, Doogie Howser, Laverne & Shirley, and Batman. Screw Honey I Shrunk the Kids lol.

Overall though their 8PM-12AM schedule can be watched nonstop. I agree with Pav that it is reminsicent of Nick at Nite back in the day. It'll be really fun to watch this network!

Hopefully, like some others have said they don't get rid of this programming any time soon. I think it'll last in these timeslots until at least next fall because I find, in general, these sort of channels (and especially very new stations like this where maybe they cater to children more and won't be as ambitious with ratings) tend to stick with their schedules for a season (or year) at a time.

It'll feel all warm and cozy like when N@N was amazing up till about 2001.

I wanted to quote what you said in bold there because isn't this just extremely reminiscent of Nickelodeon and Nick at Nite when it first began in 1985? I think we may be failing to notice it now, but this could seriously turn into the next N@N but of a lower-scale in that I don't see this channel becoming as popular as Nickelodeon of course.

So excited to watch this channel!!!!!!

It will be nice to see if later on they make the network completely about sitcoms. I miss a lot of the shows that WGN had on Sundays for a while.

Honey I Shrunk the Kids: The Series is going to be on The Hub? AWRIGHT! I haven't watched since the days Disney Channel aired it. Now they need to pick up Boy Meets World because ABC Family isn't doing it justice by airing at 7am.

Jenny, if you have Discovery Kids right now, you'll have The Hub. They are just changing their name to The Hub and re-branding.

One show I think would do great on The Hub: The Brady Bunch (more so than Laverne & Shirley, but not complaining!). And Step by Step as well, but they seem to be going a more surprising classic approach in primetime, and I don't mind that.

Actually, The Hub's programming we are most interested in doesn't start until 10/11 (next Monday). Weekends are apparently movies/other series in primetime.

There is absolutely no mention of the 8PM-6AM series on the Hub's website, so I'm still thinking it will have its own website and be themed differently. HubBub (the preschool block, I guess sort of like how Nick Jr. was on Nickelodeon) will be from 9AM-1PM weekdays and as mentioned already has its own website.

The schedule is up and running with episodes, it's at http://www.hubworld.com/tv-schedule

So who all got to watch The Hub? What did you think?

I was impressed, it was great to see Family Ties, Batman, Wonder Years, Laverne and Shirley, Happy Days....could not get in to Doogie Howser at all. That and the HISTK/GI/Transformers stuff were the only weak spots for me.

Maybe I haven't seen it in ages, but the quality of Family Ties seemed poor to me. The image was not sharp at all. The rest of the shows seemed to be in good quality, but that just stuck out at me...is that just the way the show looks? I can't remember.

The editing seemed decent. Saw tons of commercials for Hasbro games. I guess they haven't sold a lot of commercials yet. The promos were OK but it would be neat if the block was branded differently, like Nick at Nite. Overall, though, I can't complain as they are airing shows that haven't been aired in syndication in quite a while. ;) It'll be interesting to see what their next moves will be.

Yeah, but it wasn't as bad overall, with Wonder Years at least. Most noticable was when they cut to commercials in the scene in the gym from the pilot and came back to another scene, IIRC.

Edit...both Family Ties and Happy Days have this at the end. Did they use this on Nick at Nite/TV Land? I don't remember it. Happy Days' scene transitions are rather odd (circles, mini-squares, etc). Looks original.

I seem to remember TV Land using the more modern Paramount endings from the 1990s with those shows. Laverne & Shirley has very good quality compared to the other CBS shows on HUB; it has the "Paramount, a Viacom Company" at the end that is more modern and is more typically seen these days.

Seems like the CBS shows with the modern endings are much better quality. What is the difference....how does Laverne and Shirley, which is older, have better quality and a newer Paramount logo at the end than Family Ties? Rather confusing.

I know that they used that Paramount logo for Happy Days on TV Land Canada until very recently when they stopped airing the show and turned into Comedy Gold so I'd assume the same for N@N/TV Land in the US.

Maybe they bought some older syndicated prints or something that were lower cost? Is that even possible? I mean, they did get a lot of sitcoms so maybe that has something to do with it.

Or maybe it's just their operations were only on the first day and some things weren't 100% yet. Could the syndicated prints just be dusty from nobody airing these shows hahahahha

Maybe it is cheaper because of the quality. Funny how of the CBS shows they're airing, L&S is the only one using the familiar (at least to me) prints that you typically see which are sharper and more vibrant with 1995 logo at the end.

DUH! I just remembered, WGN aired Happy Days in the early-mid 2000s and used that Paramount ending like Hub is from the 70s/80s. I'm pretty sure. I'm still pretty sure TV Land, who aired it at the same time, used this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNhKpl0SzN4) ending and had better quality as I watched it a lot.

I've been watching HD and L&S all week and I'm just enjoying them. I don't think the quality is that bad. If you want to talk bad then you should have tried watching Alice when Ion used to air it. I could barely see the show...it was so fuzzy. lol

Yes it's no where near as bad as that-lol

I just find it interesting how the quality of a show can differ by channel.
Alice on ION...remember the editing on top of the quality? Quite possibly the worst presentation of a series I've seen.

On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, the classic series will only be airing after midnight. Looks like they will be starting with pilot episodes on weekends. Schedule is as follows, for this weekend at least:

Friday night (Saturday AM):

2:00AM Doogie Howser, M.D.
2:30AM Happy Days
3:00AM Batman
3:30AM Batman

Saturday night (Sunday AM):

1:00AM The Wonder Years
1:30AM The Wonder Years
2:00AM Doogie Howser, M.D.
2:30AM Happy Days
3:00AM Batman
3:30AM Batman

Sunday night (Monday AM):

12:00AM Family Ties
12:30AM Family Ties
1:00AM The Wonder Years
1:30AM The Wonder Years
2:00AM Doogie Howser, M.D.
2:30AM Happy Days
3:00AM Batman
3:30AM Batman

The new Hub is doing much better than Discovery Kids. I hope this channel doesn't ditch the classics like ION did when they started growing a lot.

Those are good questions, I know nothing about syndication really but would like to know.

I don't think I've ever seen Happy Days have that Paramount ending. I've only really seen it on TV Land Canada and WGN though.

Let me ask you guys, is the Hub quality of Happy Days worse than WGN though?

And I agree, at least these shows are back on and as long as the quality isn't TERRIBLEEE, I think it adds more of a retro feel haha. Better than a new show in lower quality you know?

I don't remember the quality there totally, but I think it is comparable and they have the same Paramount/Gulf+Western ending. The Hub's quality is certainly nowhere near unwatchable by any means, it's just not what I was used to seeing when I last watched it in syndication on TV Land. I think the show I am most excited to see again is Laverne & Shirley - I forgot how much I loved that show! :D

Old used library tapes....are those cheaper or something? I know really nothing about them, so I would guess so, because why not get the copies/whatever they're called that most channels get of shows?

For those who have a problem with the quality of the pictures on some shows.......
We were watching the Daniel Boone show on World Harvest one day last week and the picture was beyond horrible. I don't know why but I changed the format and on one of the settings the picture got very clear. Maybe this would work for some for you?

Happy Days looks AWESOME on The Hub tonight (the 10PM episode, at least). The colors were incredibly sharp and vibrant like I've never seen them.

It had this ending: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSlS9hbUgDo

The 10:30 episode is faded like they have been. I haven't been watching to see how they've been looking lately.

Maybe there are some episodes they haven't gotten to replacing with newer prints yet?

It's good to see some of these shows back on the air. However The Hub, similair to so many tv stations these days has waaaay to many commercials.Watching lets say Familty Ties, about 3 minutes after the show starts they cut into a block of commercials. And sometimes right in the middle of a scene. They are editing these shows as much as TV Land does.

Who the hell cares about commercials when the shows that are airing on the HUB haven't been seen in years?

LUNCH
11-28-2010, 04:23 PM
I concur it is good to see these shows back on the air. However the amount of commercials kind of ruins it to a degree. When viewing a half hour show I don't want to see 3 or more commercial interruptions during the half hour each lasting 3-4 minutes.Years ago it was unheard of to have over 5-6 minutes of ads per half hour.--I was actually pleasantly surprised yesterday when viewing McMillan and Wife on RTV.The first commercial interruption was after 20 minutes.

AKA
11-28-2010, 05:19 PM
I agree with that, Lunch. And actually, one thing that bothers me even more than editing is when a network will insert a commercial break where it doesn't belong (i.e., between "natural" act breaks). The Hub is notorious for this. They also are using older prints of shows (for example, they're using the 1992 syndicated prints of The Wonder Years and the pre-remastered Family Ties episodes), presumably to cut costs. And these older syndicated prints are already edited from their network versions...

AKA,,,I agree, what is really needed is a commercial free station or 2 that shows only classic television shows. As you mentioned, similair to something like Turner Classic Movies, just with a regular schedule of shows. Commercial tv in general has become almost impossible to watch.Even though I like some of the shows on The Hub,I rarely watch them because of how they ruin the shows.

LUNCH
11-28-2010, 05:55 PM
By the way there is an interesting station I think they are called IFC.The only good shows in my opinion they air are the Three Stooges and Monty Python. However they do not show commercials during the show, just after the shows end.And I don't think they edit the shows either.

SpenceOlchin

Yeah, I agree with everyone that, while it's annoying that these shows are edited to a certain extent and maybe having older syndication prints than we'd like, they are still on TV again and we otherwise wouldn't be able to see such shows in syndication. Wonder Years isn't on DVD so it really is special to have it back in syndication.

I'm just wondering more about how you've concluded the syndication prints of The Wonder Years to be from 1992? Do you mean the ones you would be seeing if your local CBS, for example, decided to air it in off-network syndication on like a weekday afternoon in 1995? Or are these the same prints TNN and ABC Family, and come to think of it N@N, would have used as well? Is the difference more in the picture quality or in the editing?

Thanks! :)

The Hub is technically not a new network (they just changed their name/direction), so they really can't air unedited programming. They get good ad money, but Batman airs unedited. The only thing is that they speed it up to do so. Quality for Batman is OK, it's not really bad. But who really cares about editing when shows like Doogie Howser have barely aired in the last 10-15 years.

But how bad is the editing really? If it's the same as ABC Family I don't see a major problem. Those ran for about 20-21 minutes and I didn't mind them at all or see a big issue with it.

...is that they brought back "ATOMIC BETTY" almost five years after Cartoon Network just yanked it off the air without any prior notice! Seems they had an exclusive five year contract to carry the show in the U.S.- starting in September 2004- but new management decided to keep it off their schedule after December 2005, while honoring their contract with distributor Breakthrough Films through its expiration in 2009...guaranteeing no other cable network would be able to carry it until then! Everyone else around the world saw the remaining season and a half worth of episodes through 2008...EXCEPT the U.S., because of CN's stubbornness. Fortunately, after CN's deal finally ended, the man behind Breakthrough Films, Kevin Gillis, was able to find a new home for "BETTY" by the fall of 2010...with "The Hub". And for that, I will always be grateful to them!

10:30PM Happy Days
11PM Laverne and Shirley

If they go with 'Fifth Grader' at 8, I'd expect them to move Happy Days to 9 and change the schedule around that. Maybe even a full hour, dropping one of the other series (Doogie Howser?). There's probably a good chance of them picking up some other series for primetime in the fall anyway.

The one show I hope lasts a while on The Hub is "Family Game Night." This sweet game show is proof that you can have fun with your families without having to resort to too many overdramatic stalling moments that have been seen on far too many primetime game shows that came and went in the last five years. Also, Todd Newton's much better on this show than he ever was on "Whammy!"

http://www.deadline.com/2011/06/is-the-hub-due-for-a-writedown-discovery-debt-filing-raises-that-possibility/

Discovery Communications seems to be preparing the Street for bad news about
The HUB -- the kids channel it co-owns with Hasbro. In a $500 million debt
filing at the SEC this morning, Discovery says that last month the companies
amended their partnership agreement to create an undescribed "trigger event"
that could lead to a writedown indicating the property is worth less than they
had thought. The filing adds that "The HUB’s management is in the process of
conducting a fair value analysis to support goodwill impairment testing," with
the results expected in 3Q. The companies also agreed to an unspecified change
in the license fees that The HUB pays for its cartoons. The channel, which
targets ages 6-12, has struggled to grow since October when Discovery and Hasbro
re-branded Discovery Kids. It has attracted an average total day audience of
23,000 so far in the second quarter, down from 24,000 in the first quarter.

Discovery says it will support general corporate expenditures with the $500
million it hopes to raise from a sale of senior unsecured notes due in 2021.
Moody's Investors Service says the company probably will use most of the cash to
buy back its stock. Discovery has already repurchased 11.6 million shares of its
common stock from the $1 billion currently authorized for that purpose. That
includes the $147 million it spent between April 1 and June 10 to buy 3.9
million shares. Moody's gave the new debt filing a Baa2 rating, which means it's
considered a moderate credit risk. A new round of stock repurchases could
provide a bump for Discovery's shares. They've appreciated about 5% over the
last 12 months, under-performing the Standard & Poor's 500, which was up
about 17%.
