Karl Malden and Raymond Burr. Malden died last summer and Burr has been dead for 20 years(approx)

It should be mentioned that all three men were under consideration to host the show when it became a weekly series. The reason Stack was picked was actually quite simple: He demanded a lesser salary than either Burr or Malden.

That's right. In a 1994 article, Malden and Burr asked for what producer John Cosgrove desscribed as "astronomical" salaries. He didn't say specifically how much they wanted, but it was established that it was more than what the studio was willing or able to pay them. A salary request is a common factor in hiring decisions.
