Sure, Rickles was/ is a very successful insult comic, but did that cause him not be universally liked by TV audiences? Or was the material just not strong enough?

View Full Version : Do You Think 'CPO Sharkey' Failed Because Don Rickles Was Unlikable? Brian Damage 08-28-2010, 09:55 PM Sure, Rickles was/ is a very successful insult comic, but did that cause him not be universally liked by TV audiences? Or was the material just not strong enough? TVFactFan 08-28-2010, 11:54 PM Sure, Rickles was/ is a very successful insult comic, but did that cause him not be universally liked by TV audiences? Or was the material just not strong enough? Probably so but I laughed when he made fun of black people-lol Very entertaining Brian Damage 08-29-2010, 12:01 AM Probably so but I laughed when he made fun of black people-lol Very entertaining So you think he was just not well liked? Mr. Television 08-29-2010, 12:05 AM This was Don Rickle's best tv show. I'm not really sure why it didn't take off. I know during the second season, it replaced Sanford Arms so Friday night on NBC wasn't that great at the time. I guess maybe Don Rickles is also an aquired taste too. He might not be for everybody. Marvo301 08-29-2010, 12:07 AM I think it was the material not Don. Don may be an insult comic but he has a rare gift for telling insult jokes without being mean or hurtful. As a result he is one of the most loved and respected people in show business. People consider it a compliment and an honor to be insulted by Don Rickles. TVFactFan 08-29-2010, 12:09 AM So you think he was just not well liked? The show actually had a nice little run but just didn't appeal to women. It was only watchable to men which is probably why it didn't last. TVFactFan 08-29-2010, 12:12 AM CPO Sharkey Marathon tomorrow in my apartment because of this thread-lol I have to find the ep when he imititating black people in the hood shooting dice LMAO Marvo301 08-29-2010, 12:13 AM The show actually had a nice little run but just didn't appeal to women. TVFactFan 08-29-2010, 12:23 AM So it was the material that was the problem not the star! I just think the show didn't have a mass appeal. I was a unsual teenager so I liked the show but i don't think the show grabbed the attention of teens women seniors kids only men 25-49 or men in the military Mr. Television 08-29-2010, 12:26 AM I just think the show didn't have a mass appeal. What was it about, when did it air, and why was it axed? With Don you would think it would've been a hit! TVFactFan 01-02-2012, 02:04 PM Never even heard of this show. What was it about, when did it air, and why was it axed? With Don you would think it would've been a hit! It was a military company like Gomer Pyle and aired from 1976 to 1978. It was axed because at the time it was NBC's only hope for success and could not pull in the ratings. The show did well as a mid season replacement from Dec of 76 to May 77 but in the fall of 1977 the show could not get it done. Well the show only lasted a year and a half so it probably wouldn't sell too well Brian Damage 01-02-2012, 10:28 PM You would think it would be on DVD, but DVD companies are no better than networks nowadays. It's all about the bottom line and what they think will sell and what won't. TVFactFan 01-02-2012, 10:36 PM You would think it would be on DVD, but DVD companies are no better than networks nowadays. My name is Solomon Yong Fang 06-24-2022, 07:07 AM I think the problem with Don Rickels was men found him funny and women not so much. TVFactFan 06-24-2022, 01:28 PM That could have been the case since another show he tried to do 4 years prior also failed. The show that does seem to be in existence TMC 08-04-2023, 12:41 AM I just read a comment (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2W0EVUbEtYA&lc=UgyIFNI2lsM3osCdOzl4AaABAg) on YouTube that stated that Joan Rivers was like the female version of Don Rickles (https://www.quora.com/Why-didnt-Don-Rickles-ever-have-a-successful-sitcom), when discussing her ill-fated late night talk show on Fox in the '80s. Basically, a little bit goes a long way. But people didn't want a steady diet every night. TVFactFan 08-04-2023, 01:03 AM It was 4 reasons it failed 1. Bionic Woman-season 1 2. Baretta-season 1 3. Good Times-season 1 4. Donny and Marie-season 2 Duster76 08-27-2023, 12:05 AM I just read a comment (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2W0EVUbEtYA&lc=UgyIFNI2lsM3osCdOzl4AaABAg) on YouTube that stated that Joan Rivers was like the female version of Don Rickles (https://www.quora.com/Why-didnt-Don-Rickles-ever-have-a-successful-sitcom), when discussing her ill-fated late night talk show on Fox in the '80s. "I just read a comment on YouTube that stated that Joan Rivers was like the female version of Don Rickles" I don't agree with that assessment of Joan's comedic character. She was the best friend who read National Enquirer, The Star, the gossip columns and commented on them. You have to remember where Joan was born and grew up, Brooklyn, New York, that character she was playing was a personality type in New York during her formative years and many were still around as late as the 70's and early 80's. TVFactFan 08-27-2023, 12:07 AM He was allowed to be himself in CPO sharkey but it wasnt enough |
