catlover79 07-21-2010, 02:07 PM Dukes of Hazzard - the opening credits played to Waylon Jennings' vocal version of "The Good Ol' Boys". The closing credits played to the instrumental version of the song.
biffbronson 07-21-2010, 08:28 PM Petticoat Junction -- vocals in the opening, no lyrics in the closing -- except PJ is stated at the very end. (I should note that there were 3 sets of opening vocals in total, over the years: The original, then a briefly used one without Kate but before "Lady M.D.," and finally the Lady MD one).
catlover79 07-22-2010, 12:06 AM Just thought of two more - Family Ties and Growing Pains.
biffbronson 07-22-2010, 04:08 PM Question: What about The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Phyllis? I haven't seen either in a long time, and just can't remember.
Rezny@gmail.com 07-22-2010, 09:11 PM Question: What about The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Phyllis? I haven't seen either in a long time, and just can't remember.About "Phyllis",I don't know.As for "The Mary Tyler Moore Show",you are 100% correct. The show actually had TWO instrumental closings:1)Used in the early seasons(I'm not sure what seasons.Does anyone know?)was the kind of melancholy one, which I didn't care that much for.and 2)The much better, happier one used in the latter seasons(again,I'm not sure what seasons used theme 2-Does anyone know?)

biffbronson 07-23-2010, 07:59 PM I wanted to mention that Bat Masterson was the opposite of these series: Instrumental opening, and a great set of closing lyrics ("He wore a cane and derby hat, his name was Bat...").

Rezny@gmail.com 08-11-2010, 08:55 PM "Night Gallery" and "The Twilight Zone"(with the famous doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-theme by Marius Constant and opening narration by Rod Serling, and Marius Constant's instrumental closing at the end, with no narration ,AND the much softer eerier theme by the late Bernard Herrmann, and opening narration by Rod Serling, and Bernard Herrmann's much softer eerier closing with no narration)I personally liked the late Bernard Herrmann's theme better. They should have used that throughout the entire series.
Tweety 08-11-2010, 10:31 PM After Gilligan's Island left the air, Bob Denver starred in another sitcom for two seasons called "The Good Guys". The opening theme was sung, the closing was instrumental.
Here's a youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhGssQZroyc) clip of the 1968 (i.e. first) season opening and closing credits, it's about 1:30 in length
This was one of my favorite theme songs as a kid, I never forgot the tune. But I'm sure as a kid, I probably never quite understood all of the lyrics. They also had a vocal opening in the 2nd season, with different lyrics.
Ray Evans, one of the co-writers of the song, passed away in 2007. The other two writers passed away around 1980 and 2001 I think.

TV Knowledge Fan 09-25-2010, 01:54 PM .....and both seasons of "F TROOP" had instrumental closing themes. Another series was "NANNY AND THE PROFESSOR" (first and second seasons only- third season reprised The Addirisi Brothers' vocal at the end). "THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW" used three versions of Sonny Curtis' theme vocals in the opening credits (1970-'71, 1971-'76, 1976-'77)...and there were five instrumental closings (1970-'71, with the sax and brass out front; 1971-'72, the "soft closing" amid swirling strings; 1972-'75 {even though it sounds "melancholy" to you, 'rrenzy', that version, with the trumpet and piano out front, was one of the best closing themes I've ever heard, and reflected the series at its apex}; 1975-'76 {I wan't too crazy about that rendition- it sounded too "self-consicous"}, and 1976-'77 {that's more like it [trumpet, piano, rhythm section, and that lone guitar at the end]- a nice way to reflect, and to close the season and the series).
"LOVE, AMERICAN STYLE" was another example (even though it was more of a comedy anthology than a straight sitcom). Problem is, you can only hear the full rendition of Charlie Fox's closing theme in the original hour-long version. The half-hour daytime/syndicated edition used an edited version, with the "middle section" {trumpet solo} omitted.
