View Full Version : Please Keep Me In Your Thoughts...
OH Nuts! 05-28-2010, 01:09 PM I think I may have diabetes now. Left a message with my Dr's office to schedule an appointment next week and let them know my symptoms.
All of a sudden this week I've been having this uncontrollable thirst and of course then urinating frequently. At times it is almost as though someone has attached a salt lick to my tongue. My last to blood tests had elevated A1C levels (although the other markers for diagnosing diabetes-fasting glucose and sugar in the urine were fine). That was in October. Like a dope I haven't been watching what I eat (I was very bad around the holidays) although lately I haven't really been eating badly. I'm also 20-25 lbs overweight and have a pear shape. Diabetes also runs in my family and I'm in my 50s. While I certainly don't want to jump the gun the above symptom is a classic one. I'm hoping for the best AND THIS TIME I'm going to be vigilant and TAKE GOOD CARE of myself. I'm praying that diet, losing the weight, and exercise will be all I need - and maybe only one med.
I know some of you have shared you have Diabetes, can I pm you or feel free to share stuff with me. I don't want to turn this into a long thread all about me but I want to talk to others who have this. I may need to talk about this a lot, depending on what I find out next week.
I'm ashamed to say that I've been lazy about this - and esp. since I got 2 wake up calls. One of the things I'm going to have to do is be VIGILANT and unyeilding about being around situations where sweets are present. Cause when I'm at parties I just shovel things into my mouth. And being at one is what started my backslide. Sorry to be such a downer but I need to reach out for help.
Thanks everyone.
catlover79 05-28-2010, 02:09 PM God bless you, Rich - I hope that you don't have diabetes. But if you do, you can always go to Charles and Jude for support because they have both been frank here about their battles with diabetes. Please keep us posted!!!
Marvo301 05-28-2010, 03:57 PM I wish you all the best Rich and I am sending positive thoughts and prayers your way.
steevo 05-28-2010, 04:43 PM Diabetes runs in my mother's side of the family, so I have to watch myself, too. Rich, I will be praying for you as well.
sunshinefizzy 05-28-2010, 05:01 PM Being a type 2, I can say I understand your concern. It is a devestating diagnosis because you do have to change your life, especially your relationship with food. I mean, you can have whatever you want, just in small portions, I oughta talk I eat what I want and don't care:lol: . All I can say is just watch it, excercise and don't feel bad when you have a bad reading or day because it's gonna happen.
LuLu Rogers 05-28-2010, 05:06 PM You're in my prayers Rich. I'm borderline type 2 diabetic, which means I'm at high risk for becoming a type 2 diabetic. If I can get my weight down and get myself healthy, I can avoid it, so my doctor is helping me work on that with a special diet and exercise plan.
Mr. Television 05-28-2010, 08:01 PM You're in my thoughts and prayers Rich. I actually thought that I might have had it a couple years ago. Thank God I didn't. You just hang it there buddy and I'll keep good thoughts for you. :)
Jude The Obscure 05-28-2010, 08:35 PM Rich, you can feel free to pm here (or e-mail me). I can definitely answer questions.

Absolutely our thoughts and prayers are with you. Stay strong!
Retro4Life 05-28-2010, 08:53 PM Take care of yourself, and don't be afraid to reach out for help if you need it.
I do not have diabetes but the doctor told me a couple years ago to start watching my cholesterol level. I started walking (almost) every day and really paying attention to what I ate and within a year my level had dropped 22 points. Now the doctor says I'm doing great.
My point is that sometimes just a moderate adjustment can do wonders. I'm sure you will do what you need to do to stay healthy but as others have said, everyone is human and we have to love ourselves while trying to change.
Be well!! :)
Pitooey 05-28-2010, 09:32 PM My hubby has it and he goes through his changes. He gets into a frenzy every now and then eating powered donuts, chocolate, etc.
On the plus side he's lost weight and he doesn't need the injection which is a good thing.
Keep your chin up we're rooting for you here at SO.
catlover79 05-28-2010, 09:33 PM You've got many friends here, Rich - we're all hoping and praying that all is well!!!!

Family Ties Forever! 05-29-2010, 02:09 AM Good luck.
Janice 05-29-2010, 03:05 PM Rich, you'll absolutely be in my thoughts and prayers. It's quite possible that you don't have diabetes. It would be great if this was just a wake-up call. My husband is a diabetic, Type 2. He doesn't need insulin; just pills for now. I'm the cook in the house. I do my best. Fortunately, we both like fresh fruits and vegetables. He doesn't have the sweet tooth that I have, and that I know you have too.
I know I speak for everyone here when I say that you're one of Sitcom's most beloved and well-respected members. We'll be here for you every step of the way.

Zoneboy 05-29-2010, 03:09 PM Diabetes is a bitch and I really wish you all the best. I've become so disgusted with it that I'm seriously considering flushing all medications down the toilet, tossing my monitor in the trash and severing all ties with my Dr.. Of course this isn't the right thing to do but I can't deal with this much longer.
gidgetgrape 05-29-2010, 03:20 PM The milk has been spilt and the cake has been eaten so stop beating yourself up about the past! I hope you don't have diabetes, but if you do, it's not the end of the world. It just means you have to take better care of yourself and you plan to do that anyway. Keep your chin up and don't give up Rich! You'll be okay no matter what happens.
OH Nuts! 06-01-2010, 03:16 PM Everyone thanks so much for your kind thoughts. I am scared to go to the Dr. but I have to bite the bullet and just do it. While a full-blown diagnosis would make me very sad as someone said its not the end of the world. I would certainly not give up but would TAKE ULTRA GOOD CARE OF MYSELF, which is the key to diabetes management. I've begun lving like a Type 2, I've been counting my carbs and eating 5-6 mini-meals of 300-400 cal each. And walking 2.5 miles every day. And eating according to the balanced food recommendations of the ADA.
Many people live healthy and long lives with diabetes IF THEY TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES AND HAVE A GOOD RELATIONSHIP with their doctors. And I have at least 3 good role models in my non-cyber life. I have a cousin with type 1 who was diagnosed as a child and she takes AMAZING care of herself. My hat it soooo off to her because Type 1 is much harder to manage than Type 2. But Type 2 poorly managed can become very similar to Type 1. I have a close freind and a relative who have Type 2 and got it in their 50s. They take great care of themselves, are at their normal weight and exercise regularly. So whatever happens, I will be taking very good care of myself from now on. If I was lucky enough to get a 3rd wake up call this is going to be the last one.
Good luck, Rich! And whenever someone serves you a sweet dessert, just give it to Wally Plumstead! :happyface

I love it. Honestly, now I look at one of those toxic monstrosites and know THEY ARE ABSOLUTE AND TOTAL POISON FOR ME.
The Great One 06-03-2010, 06:07 PM I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers!
OH Nuts! 06-07-2010, 02:52 PM I have to admit I was sweating it a bit. But my blood test (A1c) came back and it IMPROVED over last year. So I'm still prediabetic. I don't know HOW that happened but it did. Maybe I just got lucky but I always thought that the horrid thirst (and accompanying constant urination) was a pretty strong red flag. Anyways I went from being VERY prediabetic (6.5) to somewhat prediabetic (6.1).
From now on I'm eating like a Type 2 diabetic and drop 15 lbs. I walk an average of 3 miles a day. I'm also going to start doing some type of volunteer work for the ADA and maybe start going to Weight Watchers so I can maintain good eating habits - which is an integral part of managing blood glucose.

Janice 06-09-2010, 07:46 PM Rich, that's wonderful news! I'm sure you're so relieved. Try to remember how scared you were over this. That may keep your incentive going to stay on the healthy track. I live with a diabetic, and it's no fun for either of us. Congratulations, my friend. I'm so very happy to hear this.
