View Full Version : Misjudging Rose
Rezny@gmail.com 04-07-2010, 04:01 PM Oh,sure.Rose was somewhat dimwitted sometimes. But she revealed things about her that Dorothy,Blanche and Sophia DIDN'T know about. For instance, the girls did NOT know she smoked when she was younger(as did Dorothy and Blanche-Dorothy was surprised when she learned that Rose did that, and she was shocked beyond belief when she knew what a homo-er-homosexual -was,at first,Dorothy thought she said hobo,(Dorothy probably thought that Rose was too dumb to know what a homoisexual was,but she was wrong,)she was REALLY surprised when she found out what Rose really said.Sophia never found out,and probably thought that Rose was dumb and didn't know what a homosexual was,nor did Blanche ,who probably changed her mind about Rose, after calling her an empty-headed twit.Boy,were THEY wrong.Sophia also probably thought that Rose was dumb, but did she ever say "Rose, you're not as dumb as we thought. In fact, you're pretty smart.",or something like that? Were there any OTHER things about Rose that she revealed about her that Dorothy,Blanche and Sophia DIDN'T know about, and were surprised to learn about her?
Rezny@gmail.com 04-10-2010, 11:54 PM And Sophia REALLY misjudged Rose in the episode with Roses' sister Holly(Inga Swenson),when Sophia couldn't tell which dog was Dreyfus, and Rose did.She probably thought,"How the ****did she know? She's not as dumb as I thought!"
SueAnn_Rose 04-11-2010, 10:44 AM I think sometimes the girls did misguide Rose when really she was the smartest of the 4. Like for example, when Sophia and Blanche got ripped off and Rose tells them that they were used and told them about the Pigeon Drop. I'd say that Rose sometimes used her brain and was smart about things, but Rose wasn't dumb she was nieve about life she was not dumb or stupid.
Rezny@gmail.com 04-12-2010, 08:55 PM And remember in the 2-part episode where Sophia was falsely accused of starting the fire that burned down Shady Pines? It wasn't Blanche,or even Dorothy who found out what REALLY happened, and cleared Sophia. It was Rose.Pretty smart cookie for someone who acts dumb, that Rose.
And did anyone else notice that it was usually Rose who saved the day during real emergencies? She's the one handling the fire extinguisher in the episode where her sister, who is blind, starts the grease fire. And the one doing the Heimlich when Sophia chokes in "Room 7," (and sees Sal in Heaven.)
andress_jade 04-20-2010, 09:26 PM Even Betty White said that Rose wasn't "dumb" but "terminally naive". If someone told her something she believed it. She had no reason not to. Like when she told everyone that she had never owned a television the whole time she was with Charlie, it turned out that the reason why was because she had more sex than any of the girls combined.
Rose was raised on a farm and was actually smart in that aspect, not book smart like Dorothy. :)
SueAnn_Rose 04-25-2010, 09:56 AM See Rose is smart in a lot of ways and in most situations she was the one being smart about something and the other girls didn't think she was smart enough to do those things she did when she was being the smart one.
I like what Betty said about the character of Rose Nylund because what she said is very true. I agree with her because I don't or ever found Rose to be dumb, she can say stupid things sometimes but she wasn't dumb or stupid when it comes to surtain things.
Rezny@gmail.com 05-14-2010, 11:16 PM And on "The Tonight Show"with Jay Leno Wednesday Night, they had Betty White on the show, and featured a video collage of Betty White's career, and included a clip of The Golden Girls that showed Rose breakdancing!,(or doing something like that)people cheering, and Dorothy and Blanche looking on in stunned amazement, and probably originally thought that Rose was so naieve and dumb that she didn't know what breakdancing was.Boy,were they wrong!
lovebetty 06-15-2010, 12:52 AM I'm glad others feel this way too.
SueAnn_Rose 06-15-2010, 12:45 PM Rose is cool like that, she can be really smart and I know Betty had a wonderful time playing her cause she has said that Rose is one of her favorite roles.
80sTrivia 06-15-2010, 02:32 PM I always thought of Rose more as innocent and naive than dumb! :)
lovebetty 06-15-2010, 08:22 PM I always thought of Rose more as innocent and naive than dumb! :)
Me too!
SueAnn_Rose 06-16-2010, 12:31 PM Yes, it's true she was the more innocent/naive one no matter what she is still a great character.
Dianne3 06-16-2010, 04:00 PM Other examples in which Rose is the one that takes action:
I haven't seen this episode in a while. In the 2nd half of the Vacation episode where the girls think they are stranded on an island, it was Rose that took action.
In the episode where Rose "killed" Mrs. Claxton, it was her that saved the tree from being cut down by spreading the ashes there.
In the episode where one of Sophia's friends was in a run down retirement home, it was Rose that took the time to find a good home. Although they wouldn't have been able to afford it if not for Blanches' bonus.
Rezny@gmail.com 06-22-2010, 08:17 PM And,I don't knows what episode it was in,but Dorothy was taken aback somewhat, and surprised when Rose said"And I'm the smartest one in St.Olaf".
Rezny@gmail.com 07-05-2010, 09:52 PM And in the episode with Rose's cousin Sven, who fell for Blanche, she said after meeting him for the first time "I never thought I'd say this, but I'm beginning to think she's(Rose)the smartest one in that family!"
LadyGrinningSoul 07-07-2010, 09:56 PM I kind of dislike how much Rose was bullied, particularily by Dorothy. It was funny, but I felt bad for her.
I wonder if she felt threatened by Roses innocence, perhaps bitter because she had become so jaded about men and stuff. I think she envied that about Rose. Rose is smart, but her thinking is a bit off and she is hopelessly naive. I think that brilliant people are often the ones who march to their own drum logic wise.
Dorothyfan1997 07-19-2010, 03:41 PM And on "The Tonight Show"with Jay Leno Wednesday Night, they had Betty White on the show, and featured a video collage of Betty White's career, and included a clip of The Golden Girls that showed Rose breakdancing!,(or doing something like that)people cheering, and Dorothy and Blanche looking on in stunned amazement, and probably originally thought that Rose was so naieve and dumb that she didn't know what breakdancing was.Boy,were they wrong!
What eppy was the breakdancing from i have to see that
LadyGrinningSoul 07-25-2010, 08:15 PM I can't remember which episode the breakdancing was from, but here a link. Its hilarious! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0P4J6QAI7w
Rezny@gmail.com 07-27-2010, 10:39 PM And,in the semi-serious episode with Sophia's friend Alvin, the subplot was funny, about the girls trying to get a cherished Teddy Bear back from a snotty girl-scout type. But it WASN'T Dorothy, with her hammer and tongs (tough guy approach, who got it back.It was Rose!,who at first was nice to the girl, and then grabbed the Teddy Bear away from the girl without her knowledge, and pushed the little girl outside, and smiled gleefully as she got the bear back.Blanche and Dorothy both smiled happily, and Dorothy, smiling, gave her the 0.K. sign.
SueAnn_Rose 07-28-2010, 03:28 PM ^ Haha, that was the part of that episode. See Rose can be smart enough to see through a snotty little girl.
ThomasE 07-31-2010, 12:43 AM Then there was the episode of the Golden Palace when Sophia played a trick on Rose making her think that she killed someone (Tim Conway). At the end of the episode, his ghost came back to "haunt" Rose. Rose shot him with a gun and Sophia got started praying because she thought her prank went too far. Then Rose turned the table on Sophia and revealed that she found out that Sophia was setting her up and got Sophia back. I loved that!
SueAnn_Rose 07-31-2010, 03:49 PM Yep, see Rose was even smarter in GP than GG because even Dorothy noticed how much Rose changed. She got stronger on GP and less naive.
ThomasE 07-31-2010, 03:56 PM I also liked the ep when Rose was planning a date with an old boyfriend of Blanche's (with Blanche's approval) and Blanche sabatoged the date by hiding all the toilet paper in the hotel keeping Rose away from the date by having to fix the mess. (Rose handled the housekeeping) Chuy (Cheech Marin) found it in the fridge and Rose said that Norweigian people don't get even and then Roland (Don Cheadle) says he thought she was swedish and she reponds with an evil smile "I am". Rose then calls the restaurant where Blanche is with Rose's date and reports a fire at the hotel. Blanche rushes back to the hotel and Rose tells her not to worry because she put out the fire with all "that cold toilet paper". LOLOLOL. That was classic.
McGillicuddy 08-01-2010, 03:56 PM When Sophia refused to talk to Angela, Phil's wife (after his funeral), Rose intervened. Blanche and Dorothy kind of ridiculed her for speaking up, but she said, be quiet Blanche, I'm a grief counselor and I know what I'm talking about! Then she proceeded to get to the bottom of Sophia's issues. I would say Rose was the one who saved the day then!
SueAnn_Rose 08-01-2010, 07:38 PM I loved the episode of GP when Rose set up the fire story to get Blanche to come back to the hotel and later she wins the guy that Blanche was fighting for. And with Rose having the experience to accually get Sophia to open up about losing her son, that was a very nice moment cause what Rose knew was what she was trained to do at the grief center.
Rezny@gmail.com 09-08-2010, 10:38 PM And then there was the one where Rose was so certain that Bob Hope would be at their charity banquet(and, thanks to Sophia and her boyfriend,he was),and I felt sorry for Rose when Dorothy berated her (again)for thinking like that. But at the end, when Bob Hope came out of the magician's cabinet, she sure proved them wrong(Blanche and especially Dorothy),and the look of pride on Rose's smiling face at the very end was priceless.
Dianne3 09-09-2010, 07:40 PM Actually, I didn't enjoy watching Rose in the Bob Hope episode. It was annoying for her to go on about Bob Hope being her father. In this episode, I don't blame the others for doubting that Bob Hope would be there.
Rezny@gmail.com 09-13-2010, 11:09 PM And in the episode with Dorothy and that student Mario, who faced deportation(despite her best efforts,he was deported),Rose at the end,REALLY laid the law down to Blanche, who treated Rose shabbily(for some reason),by saying to her, stern and Dorothy -like she said to Blanche "Now sit down and shut up!"Blanche fell all over herself, trying to apologize. And I liked it at the end,she said to Blanche(after Blanche supposedly expected Rose to wait on Dorothy)commanding-like "You heard her,Blanche. Now get cracking!"
Rezny@gmail.com 09-24-2010, 02:23 PM And in the one where they went on the game show,Rose showed she was smart by getting the right answer. At first, when they asked the question,I'll bet the girls thought Rose would answer the question in the same manner as that dimwitted guy whom Dorothy had on her team.
Rezny@gmail.com 09-30-2010, 10:06 PM And in the one where they were supposedly stranded with those 3 guys on that island, and,as has already been mentioned,Rose REALLY took charge, getting mad at the 3 guys and barking out orders.Blanche and Dorothy were REALLY surprised, and Dorothy and Blanche probably thought"We'd better follow her orders,or else she'll yell at us".When the 3 guys rescued them, and after she said something to Dorothy and Blanche (about pricking their fingers and being blood sisters),they(Dorothy and Blanche)said "Oh,shut up,Rose."Rose smiling, singing "I'd like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony....",with the others,(Dorothy,Blanche and the 3 guys)and as she left, she said "Boy,it's good to get back to normal!"
Rezny@gmail.com 10-18-2010, 02:29 PM And still ANOTHER time,in the episode when Stan and Dorothy went out on a date(!)after calling Rose a nit wit Blanche ,Dorothy and Sophia sat in stunned amazement after Rose said something about "cognative dissidence"(a psychological term-big word ),and I bet thought,"How would a nit wit like her know about that.Maybe she ISN'T as dumb as we thought!"
