A North Carolina middle school teacher is in the hot seat over his controversial style of teaching.
Rex Roland teaches sixth graders at Enka Middle School in Candler, N.C.
Patty Clement says her child was repeatedly bullied by Roland in class and she wants it to stop.
Clement says on a November vocabulary assignment Roland wrote the word "loser" after correcting the paper.
Just a few weeks ago, another graded assignment made its way home, and at the top of the page was the word "loser" underlined twice.
The Buncombe County School District released a statement saying that this is a personnel matter that's being looked into.
It's important to note that some parents defend Roland's teaching style saying its his way of relating to his students. None would go on camera with us.
phoebe7165 03-12-2010, 08:10 PM Way to boost the kid's self-esteem!!!
catlover79 03-12-2010, 08:18 PM Someone needs to see the guidance counselor AND principal - and I'm not talking about the student!!
Courtnee 03-12-2010, 08:32 PM On one hand, I can see how this can be infuriating. But on the other, when i was in high school I had a teacher who wrote "epic fail" and "WHY ARE YOU EVEN IN THIS CLASS?!" on papers. It was just her personality. And I was never offended or anything.
I'm sure it wasn't a mean gesture. And I'm sure she didn't write that out of hatred for the student, but I'm not going to defend her actions. Somethings are just unprofessional.

How can some parents even think of defending this miserable excuse for
a teacher? I dealt with being bullied by teachers when I was in High School
simply because of my autism. There are just some teachers out there who
should not be teaching, period.
dlemond 03-12-2010, 08:44 PM The girl is only in 6th grade!
You pull that crap up north and the parents will have your head.
I would demand that teacher be fired - he did it repeatedly!
It's either ridiculous arrogance or he has a screw loose.
It is demeaning and against the best interest of a child- an authority figure, a teacher is telling her she is a loser?
What is she 11 years old?
You'd have to get a restraining order against me if you did that to my daughter.
Marvo301 03-12-2010, 09:10 PM It could be that this is just that teacher's way of motivating his students. I think he could find a more appropriate way of doing it though.

I agree. When I was in first grade, our class was cutting out shapes out of pieces of paper. We were all quiet, concentrating on the task at hand. I cut one of them wrong. Our teacher, who was walking around the room, happened to pass by me at that moment. She yanked a handful of my hair before moving on.
It hurt, but I was more shocked and ashamed than anything else. I didn't make a peep, so none of my classmates noticed. Looking back, I know I didn't do anything wrong - but I never told anyone this until over 20 years later. Not my parents, not the principal - nobody. I clearly thought I was the one in the wrong and thought I would be in trouble if I told.
Keep in mind, this was the mid-80s - if something like that happened today, it would be all over the news like this story is. My 1st grade teacher ended up retiring at the end of that school year (1986-87).
Sterling Holobyte 03-12-2010, 10:19 PM That sounds like the middle school I went to.
Seriously. A bunch of dirtball scum those "teachers" were. There only for the paycheck, I think.
catlover79 03-12-2010, 10:25 PM No wonder more and more people are turning to homeschooling!
Mr. Television 03-12-2010, 10:37 PM Well it looks like the NC schools haven't changed since I went there.
Courtnee 03-13-2010, 12:08 AM You guys, I don't think this is a reflection on public schools as much as it is a reflection on the teacher.
I plan to teach public school one day so lets not get crazy kthnxbai.

I was not getting crazy and I was not bashing our school systems in general, I
was just saying there are some teachers who should not be teaching.

You're right Courtney. And good for you for wanting to be a teacher. It's a very noble profession.
catlover79 03-13-2010, 12:48 AM You're right Coutney. And good for you for wanting to be a teacher. It's a very noble profession.
I agree - God bless you! My dad is a public school teacher, too - and I can't even imagine how they put up with all the crap that goes along with the job. I have nothing but respect for these hard-working individuals!! :clap :clap :clap

There are definitely some who should not be teaching...and I feel sorry that you had such a hard time with some of your teachers, Lee. :(

Believe me, most teachers aren't in it for the paycheck. Alot of them only average about $25,000 a year, and then when you consider all the extra things they do in the off-hours(grading papers, planning lessons, etc). They do it because it's what they love doing. I have a friend who's a teacher and she tutors on the side for extra income.

So true - I know it's true in the case of my dad. Not to mention a lot of these teachers have to buy supplies on their own dime and not get compinsated!

Okay...I never once quoted you or said "OMG LEE I AM DIRECTING THIS AT YOU LOLOLOLOL" No. It's directed at everyone. Just relax. K?
Sterling Holobyte 03-13-2010, 01:38 PM They do it because it's what they love doing.
Mine definitely didn't love what they were doing. So, yes, I think they were in it for the paycheck. Just like any job you stay at because you are familiar with it and it pays the bills, no matter how much you make. But I do think some do start out for the right reasons, they just get jaded and get in a rut, like any job.
spunkygirl 03-13-2010, 05:04 PM Wow I can't believe any teacher would do that. My dad would have had my teacher's head on a spit if any of them had ever done that.
I plan on being a teacher, probably pre-school or kindergarten and I believe in positive reinforcement. What does calling someone a loser do but make them feel like a loser. It sure doesn't make them want to try harder
OH Nuts! 03-13-2010, 05:12 PM Unless this teacher has a very good explanation for writing this comment, and I doubt he has, he needs to be canned muy pronto.
catlover79 03-13-2010, 05:20 PM Unless this teacher has a very good explanation for writing this comment, and I doubt he has, he needs to be canned muy pronto.
My sentiments exactly!!
Janice 03-13-2010, 09:46 PM This teacher is bad news, a real weirdo. Like all professions, there are jerks. Whether it's nurses, judges, doctors, or the person who waits on you at McDonalds, you're going to find bad apples; and that goes for teachers. Throughout school, I had teachers that I loved, and teachers I couldn't stand. Not all of them are Saints.
Zebra 3 03-14-2010, 01:25 PM "-20% for being a LOSER" is an insult and disturbing. How about "You're fired for being a [fill in the blank]"?
ZeldaGilroy 03-14-2010, 06:29 PM This whole story is very disturbing to me. If in fact it all played out exactly as the media is reporting it, then definitely this teacher should be fired and should have been fired the first time this happened. There is no excuse for a teacher to be insulting to students, call them names, and especially dock their grades because they dislike them or think they are "losers." :(
However, some things just don't add up to me. First of all, why are they using a picture of the girl from like the second grade in their report? I think it's to gain sympathy. The viewers see this adorable little girl and can't imagine how someone could possibly be so hateful to her. Secondly, they do not show the rest of the paper at all. Were there other things marked on it? Do we even have proof that the teacher wrote this? Kids are sneaky sometimes, especially if they are trying to cover for a bad grade. Also, apparently this teacher has the support of many other parents. Why? If he is so abusive, why wouldn't these parents be jumping on the bandwagon trying to sue him as well? Finally, I have known, worked with, and had many awful teachers in my day. There are plenty who should be banned from the profession. Still, NONE of them would be dumb enough to write something like that on a paper where others would have proof of their cruelty or incompentence. Most truly awful teachers are verbally abusive or even physically abusive...they are cruel in ways that cannot be proven by anyone but the child. This guy would have to be a moron to write something like that and think he would not be reprimanded for it.
I am not at all saying he is innocent. He could be guilty as sin. I don't really know. I just wonder if there is maybe more to the story than what we are seeing here. I have a sixth grader myself. Middle schoolers are sarcastic, raging with hormones, and unfocused a lot of the time. Middle school teachers have to be creative to keep up with them. This response could have been part of a game in class, somehow related to the topic of the paper, or 100% evil on the part of the teacher. I am interested to see how this all turns out.
angiefan 03-14-2010, 06:35 PM That's not a nice thing for a teacher to do! When I get to be a teacher,I will Not Do that! It's like the episode of Everybody hates Chris, where they depended on him to do well on the test,so everyone could get pizza. That's not fair! He tried and studied.

Those are good points, haha. I never considered those.
Family Ties Forever! 03-14-2010, 11:52 PM That's awful. :(
I had a teacher in 5th grade make me stand in front of the overhead projector screen for half an hour as the other students sat in their desks, because she was convienced that I could see what it said, which I couldn't. It was humilating. She also stated that I "was an incovience to have me in her class."
In 8th grade there was a special assembly one day for those of us who made the National Junior Honor Society because of our good grades. When it came time for me to step forward light the candle and then sign my name in the book, the principal who had a microphone said, "Oh that's the visually impaired girl." Then she actually asked me if "I knew how to sign my name."
I had a doctor once tell me that I "must want to be blind because I go around wearing dark glasses and use a cane."
I also had a medical resident studying to be an eye doctor get upset because of my senstivity to light. He couldn't understand why the light bothered me. In that case, it was nice to have my mother there. She told the guy that "perhaps he should have his eyes dilated, shoved in a room with bright lights and see how he likes it." That shut the guy up. :)
Tubehead 03-15-2010, 02:07 AM i rember one time when i was in the third grade this teacher would write on my hand just about every day. it was kind of werid. i used to skipp my math teacher classic. but then i went to different class. i didn't like my math teacher when i was in elemraty shcool
browneyes106 03-15-2010, 02:15 PM I agree with factsfan there are some things that don't add up in this story. We will probably never know the whole story.
I agree with other posters some people should have never gone into teaching to begin with. My high school biology teacher was the type of teacher who should have been teaching at a magnet or charter type school. He was very intelligent but he couldn't deal with teaching kids who had trouble with the course material. He was cool with kids who picked up the material easily. If you asked him for help he would be rude and grab your book and shove it in your face even if you told him you read the readings but had trouble understanding things. He used to cut me and a couple of other people down all the time. He was simply there to only teach and deal with certain kids. Like I said before he should have been teaching at magnet or charter type school that focused more on math and sciences.
Bad teachers exist everywhere. My cousin's kids attended a Catholic school for two years and most of the teachers there weren't great. Her and her husband later moved to a suburb that had a great public school system. The kids liked the teachers at the public school a lot more than the teachers they had at the Catholic school.

Sounds good to me and the perfect piece of paper to write it on, in red ink, is a PINK SLIP!
gidgetgrape 03-15-2010, 02:45 PM If it's true, I think it's cruel and the teacher should be disciplined. Teachers should build children up not call them names. When an authority figure brands a child a loser, he or she is apt to act like one.

spunkygirl 04-14-2010, 05:08 PM Just saw on my local news, this teacher resigned
OH Nuts! 04-14-2010, 06:34 PM The jerk was probably one step ahead of getting canned. Good bye, good riddance & hope the door didn't hit him to hard in the a**

It might actually do him some good if the door did him him hard on the way out!!
