Do you think at any point during the series that the writers should have put Murray and Mary together romantically? Just curious. :)

Pretend Murray wasn't married to Marie.

I voted no. First of all Murry is married (to Marie) and I just don't think Mary would ever come between Murry and Marie. Secondly Mary and Murry are very good friends and nothing ruins a friendship more than an office relationship gone bad. And since Murry is married and would ultimately be loyal to his wife any romance between him and Mary would end badly. On a night time soap this kind of story line could work but since TMTMS is a sitcom it wouldn't work here.

Sorry, I forgot he was married.

Just for fun, if Murray wasn't married would you still say no?

Actually if Murry wasn't married I think he and Mary would make a nice couple.

No!
Mary was too cute and sophisticated for Murray. I think Murray was SO interested in Mary because she was out of his league!

If Marie wasn't in the picture - then absolutely!!

I think Murray was drawn to Mary in part because of her sophistication. Marie was cute, but she wasn't sophisticated.

Mary and Murray were both intelligent, kind, hardworking and independent people. I think they would have made a great couple (assuming no Marie).

It's funny. Though obviously their relationship was taboo, Murray seems a better fit than any of the legitimate beaus that Mary went through during the course of the show. And I LOVE the fact that the show resisted the temptation to "marry off" Mary in the final episode. For so many shows that's the implied "ultimate resolution" for a single woman, and I find that kind of insulting.

There was a lot of speculation about what was going to happen in the final episode of TMTMS. Unfortunately, I'm old enough to remember! But they kept it totally under wraps what was going to happen on that last episode. The biggest speculation at the time was the Mary and Lou were going to get married. It came as a complete surprise when we saw everyone in the newsroom get fired, except Ted.

I never saw Mary and Lou as anything more than friends - I never saw the sparks that some other people obviously did. In fact, Lou once said that he thought of Mary as a daughter. That's how I saw their relationship - a father figure/mentor thing.

I guess I can understand Murray's crush on Mary.
The episode I find hard to watch is "I Love A Piano", when Murray nearly has an affair.
MTM is always realistic but I find that episode really hard to watch,I know Murray didn't got through with it but its one of my least favourite MTM episodes.

I didn't really care for that ep myself. The woman that Murray is tempted by was played by Barbara Barrie, who went on to become Mrs. Barney Miller!

I know I've probably said this before...

But yes, I've always been glad that Mary didn't get married or engaged in the series. I don't think I can explain why, I just liked the idea of her being "not-permenately" attached to someone in the series, or at the end. And yes, that is different than a lot of other shows.

But I know they also had thought of Ted Bessell as a possible canidate too.

As far as Lou and Mary goes... I always loved them as a father/daughter relationship ONLY. But that's just my opinion.

^ Don't forget Andy Summers, the WJM sportscaster who was one of Mary's suitors. One of the reasons he may not have lasted is because John Gabriel, the actor who played him, moved to NYC to take a leading role in the now-defunct soap opera Ryan's Hope in 1975.

Was this reply for me?

Well, don't worry, I didn't forget him. I know they dated for like 2 years, or something. He came into the picture in Season 4, Hi There, Sports Fans and we saw him with Mary through to Season 5.

I just meant, I liked seeing her not engaged to someone at the Finale.

No, it was just a comment in general. I see what you're saying, though. I liked Andy myself - I just don't think they really developed the character that much...which may be one reason why he took the job on Ryan's Hope! He had meaty story on the soap for many years.

Whew. For a second there, I thought Mary had been seeing this guy.

I didn't notice this in your post the first time, CatLover, but actually his name was Andy Rivers.

But, yes, they didn't develop it a lot. And of course he just "disappears" and in Season 6, Murray In Love, Mary is seeing some guy named, Steve.

^ Rivers, yes - that indeed was his last name. Thanks for correcting my gaffe. In any case, John Gabriel is still busier than ever even though he is pushing 80 (!) - you can check out http://johngabriel.net - which is a nifty little site.

Here he is then and now (with his wife of 40+ years, Sandy, and their two daughters):

 :brent If Mary Richards had landed Andy Summers (or Sting, or Stewart Copeland) - THAT would've been WJM's biggest story of the year. Of course Ted would find a way to screw it up.
