My favorite event is the ice dancing, with Tessa and Scott Virtue, who are from Canada, but I've got everything set to record on my DVR, so I'll be watching most of the Olympics. It will certainly be interesting, since Vancouver and Whistler don't have enough snow and yet Dallas has gotten 14+ inches, not to mention the east coast getting several feet! :eek:

In ice dancing, of course Tricia and Scott from Canada and in cross country skiing, there is a Peruvian guy who's married to a Seattle woman. I forget his name but they were featured in the paper last week, so I'll be cheering for him.

I'm pretty excited. I live only 40 miles from Vancouver so this Olympics is happening in my back yard. I had the opportunity to get up close and personal with the Olympic Torch as it passed through my home town (Abbotsford) on Sunday evening. There was a celebration at the local stadium on Sunday evening and I went. (along with about 20,000 other folks) After walking around and collecting a few free souvenirs I spotted two parallel lines of police tape running the length of the stadium and realized that was the path the torch would be traveling. So I went and took up a position right by the tape and ended up getting a close up look at the flame as it passed by. I even got my picture in the local paper as the pkotographer snapped a picture of the torchbearer just as he was passing by me. On my way out of the stadium I met one of the torchbearers who had participated in the torch relay. He let me touch and even briefly hold his torch. So yes I'm excited about the Olympics. And since my experience with the torch I feel more connected to the Olympic movement and the Games then I ever have before. GO CANADA GO!!

Yes, a 21 year-old Luger from the eastern European nation of Georgia (a former Soviet republic) crashed during a training run at the Olympic sliding Center at Whistler. They were unable to revive him after the crash and he was later pronounced dead at the hospital. A very sad and tragic start to the Olympics. My prayers go out to his family and his teammates.

Here in Canada CTV and its broadcast partners (TSN, RSN,OLN, APTN) are showing the Olympics live on the west coast. Don't know why NBC can't. (or won't)

The figure skating starts tommorrow (Sunday) with the Pairs short program. I beleive NBC is showing it at 4 PM PacificTime if I'm reading the schedule correctly.

That is so awesome! I bet you'll never forget that experience! I can't wait till the figure skating/ice dancing starts. I've been DVR'ing Olympics stuff all day today and DVR'd the opening ceremony last nght. Only got to see the very end of the torch lighting, but that was so cool! It looked like they were lighting bars of ice on fire! LOVED that they chose Wayne Gretsky! My husband and I were in Marysville, WA at the outlet mall and we were standing in line behind some people from Victoria, BC. I asked him if it was crowded up there, and he said not really. But he talked about how crazy it is in Vancouver right now. He didn't seem too thrilled about the Olympics. To be honest, if they weren't happening only 3 hours from me, I probably wouldn't be as into them as I am.

That was so awful about that Georgian luger. So very sad. I hope people don't start placing blame on Whistler and the Olympics in general. I'm sure that track was safe, but when you are going those speeds, I guess anything can happen. Such a terrible tragedy, but I'm sure he would want the games to go on.

I tried for tickets a year ago, got turned down for every event I put in for. Then a few months later, I get an e-mail saying that a whole bunch of tickets for going on sale. It was on a certain day but they wouldn't say what time they were going on sale, you just had to keep checking to just be lucky that you checked in when they were on sale. HUH?? WTF?? I had to work that day, I wasn't going to be able to constantly check back!! How about just giving me the tickets I originally put in for?

So about 2 months ago, my cousin said he was going and he had 3 extra tickets if we wanted to buy them. If he had asked me a year ago, I would've jumped on that in a heartbeat!! Now I really don't have the money, not to mention only two months before the Games, trying to get a flight even to Seattle would probably be out, and forget getting a hotel anywhere!! Our plan a year ago was to fly into Seattle, take the train up to Vancouver. It was alot cheaper than flying to Vanc. So we're going to try for London in 2012.

Yeah I've heard a lot of the discussion about the Georgian Luger and the conclusion of the experts is that the accident was caused by driver error/inexperience not the track. You're right Andrea I will never forget my moment with the Olympic Flame. I figure it's one of those once in a lifetime moments and I'm glad I went and saw the flame in person. And tonight was a thrilling night as Alexandre Bilodeau became the first Canadian to ever win an Olympic Gold medal on home soil by winning the Men's moguls. So I am really enjoying the Olympics and there's still 12 more days to go.

OMG, I am just now getting around to watching the Opening Ceremonies and all of that, and NBC showed the video of the crash. Wow, I actually gasped when I first saw it. Just horrible. Today I watched a little of yesterday's stuff and I noticed that they fixed that wall on the luge. I'm glad they did something about it right away. I bet if there were any indications that something like this would have happened before, they would have fixed it sooner. It won't bring him back, but it will hopefully prevent this from happening to anyone else.

Watched the ski jumps (sorry, I can't think of the technical term), but wow, those are so cool! What a rush that must be to do that! I know I couldn't do it!

I've seen the footage of the crash 2 and 3/4 times. The third time I put my hands over my eyes near the end but I could still hear the impact so I think that was even worse. They worked very quickly to raise the sides of the track to prevent any further accidents. I watched the ski jumping too. For a brief time those guys are literally flying. It must be an awesome feeling. I've really been enjoying the long track speed skating. It probably helps that Canada does well in that sport but what has really impressed me is the endurance and mental strength of these athletes.

It was awesome watching Apolo get silver on Saturday. I hope he's able to do as well (or better!) tonight.

Evan Lysacek really kicked ass last night in the short program. Unfortunately, I won't be able to watch the men's free skating live tomorrow night, but here's hoping he takes home a medal (gold!).

I haven't been into the Olympics in years, and probably if I hadn't been really ill with stomach flu the past few days I wouldn't have seen as much, but I am enjoying them this time. BC is some beautiful country for sure. I'd love to get out there sometime.

btw, I LOVE curling. My parents curled before I was born. It's actually quite a game - not just hurling granite stones and sweeping. These guys think 4 or more shots ahead. It's like a chess game. They setup two "guards" to block the other teams shots and then "place" the last two stones in the "house" (or bullseye you see) while trying to knock the guards and the other stones out so that their stone is the closet to the centre. I know it's not action-packed like some of the other sports, but I like it (same with biathelon)

I watch all those also - both women's and men's. Just love it. My brother was watching the Chinese women play the other day and he said it was hilarious listening to what they yell (obviously all in Cantonese or Mandarin) and then as the rock nears the house, they yell a quick "Hurry - Hurry!" LOL

You've seen 'em during NBC's coverage of the Olympics. Whenever anybody waves to the camera, they're impossible to miss. Unfortunately, they're also impossible to find. They're the bright red Olympic mittens, and it seems like everybody wants them.

Since the Games began last week, online lookups on "olympic mittens" have been soaring. Related searches on "red olympic mittens," "canadian olympic mittens," and "where to buy olympic mittens" surged from nothing into breakout status in the Buzz. And, really, it's easy to understand the appeal. The mittens have a playful classic look, with the Canadian maple leaf on the palm. Plus, they cost only 10 Canadian dollars.

Well, they were only $10. Now that they seem to be sold out at most traditional outlets (or at least very difficult to come by), enterprising individuals have raised the price to double or more. The fact that celebrities like Cindy Crawford and U.S. Vice President Joe Biden have been seen sporting the mittens has only added to their appeal.

An AP writer recounted a quest to find a pair of the mittens around Vancouver. Everywhere the writer went, the "must-have accessory" was sold out. There are even reports of gloves being snatched up before they reach shelves. As another writer put it, everyone is "smitten for red mittens."

Millions of pairs have been sold so far, with no sign of the fervor slowing down. It's too bad the supply can't keep up with the demand. A USA Today article explains that the net proceeds from the mittens go toward supporting Canada's Olympic athletes.


Geez, wish I had known, I could have got tons at The Bay in my area. I did sort of want to get a pair to go with the scarf I had from the 2006 games. I could have started my own little black market. lol
