View Full Version : Things I hate about TV
Schmoopie 02-06-2010, 07:00 AM TV as a whole has gone downhill fast, IMO. The other night I tried forever to find something to watch because I am so sick of watching the room makeover shows on HGTV, but finally caved in and watched that station anyway.
I can't stand reality shows at all, and it's sad how even stations like Bravo (which used to show great movies) seem to have them on at all hours of the day.
I hate that the TV stations put their logo in the lower right hand corner of the screen, like it's branded in place. The only time it's nice is when I am flipping through stations and can easily see what station I'm on.
I hate that the networks (all of them it seems) are so stingy with the movie credits, and reduce them in size while running them at lightening speed so that they can add a commercial or the start of another show on the top half of the screen. These days I'm actually surprised if I see credits rolling at a normal speed. I mean, how stupid to speed it up, just to make room for a commercial or to show the same movie again?
I was watching Groundhog Day on Bravo earlier tonight and the logo on the right hand side was so big that it was covering up part of Bill Murray's face! Just insane!
I could go on and on but I just had to vent about that!
In all fairness, one thing I do like is how some stations will put "You're watching....." and then the title in the lower left hand corner, so that you don't have to try and figure it out.
Pitooey 02-06-2010, 09:57 AM Ah Schmoopie you're not alone.......... This morning I was changing the channel to see the Lifetime movies and again the same dreaded movie Mrs. Winterbourne came up. Everytime I changed to the channel it's the same movie. Nothing new.
You said about the end of any movie or show how they put the credits on the bottom and I'm trying to squint my eyes because I wanted to know who the actor was or who sang the music and it just flies by.
I too feel your pain. :(
SueAnn_Rose 02-06-2010, 12:44 PM Let's see, I love TV it's basically my life right now. But there are some things that I hate like.
Commercials that constintly play every hour,24 minutes,30,mintues,20min,10mins,5mins a day. If it's a commercial that isn't played all the time i'd be fine with the commercial.
The next thing is the Editing of tv shows when the show goes into syndication especially older shows. They always either edited too much or edit out the fun and good parts of a show.
The third thing is Reality shows, yes I watch some but it's getting way out of hand every year there's a new show out. I'm sick of reality shows and tv networks putting them on everyday. I do like some reality shows but enough is enough and too much is wayyyyyy too much these days.
I guess that's it for now. I might have more but right now this is all I dislike on tv right now.
TVFactFan 02-06-2010, 01:04 PM I hate how there are so many commercials about

heart disease

It wasn't like that in 1989-lol
waichingliu81 02-06-2010, 03:00 PM - less sitcoms being made and shown on tv
- too much trashy reality tv
- crappy kids cartoons, which are nowhere as good as those in 60s to early 90s
- too much drama, i prefer sitcoms- i miss having a laugh and having fun by watching those types of shows.
- tv networks infuriating its fanbase by cancelling tv shows- as an ugly betty fan i am still mad at abc for what they did.
MickeyMac 02-06-2010, 04:41 PM What I hate about TV now?
Everything
Mr. Television 02-06-2010, 04:45 PM I hate the way TV is geared toward the young anymore. It's like nobody else matters.
ekkostar 02-06-2010, 05:00 PM I feel my IQ drop when I watch a reality show. I just devolve into this shuffling lump that yells back at the TV screen.
Most of the television shows on network TV suck, too. What gives? Even the dramas and comedies suck now. I'd like to see this so-called brilliant television everyone is talking about.
Pitooey 02-06-2010, 09:00 PM I hate when the commercials BLAST my eardrums.
Madame X 02-07-2010, 01:39 AM Everything you all said is very true! And just think how much we have to pay for all that crap! :angryfire
Schmoopie 02-07-2010, 01:39 AM Glad to see I'm not the only one! Right after I posted this, I couldn't help but wonder if I had posted something similar to this a while back. Well, sadly, TV's become so bad that it's nice to have things like On Demand and DVD's for our enjoyment.
yankeesrj12 02-07-2010, 01:44 AM I am pretty much fine with everything on television right now. I love all the trashy reality television! :)
Chocoholic 02-07-2010, 02:04 AM I agree with you guys so much! I can't stand the trashy reality shows. I also think there are far too many crime dramas on TV. I also don't care for shows like Lost, Heroes, and Grey's Anatomy. The few sitcoms that are still on, I don't find funny at all. TV really has become such a vast wasteland.

Which is why I spend so much time watching TV on DVD and so little time watching current programming!
Chocoholic 02-07-2010, 02:29 AM Which is why I spend so much time watching TV on DVD and so little time watching current programming!
I've been reading a lot more books
Heidi Dawn 02-07-2010, 09:43 AM I don't bother watching any of the main networks anymore! I mostly watch HGTV and other lifestyle networks. I spend more free time on the computer, reading, or watching DVD's.
Pitooey 02-07-2010, 10:13 AM Just yesterday I was searching for TV DVD's (the older ones) because there is nothing on TV anymore but alot of trash.
shiningstar75 02-07-2010, 01:17 PM I for one am sick to death of marathons, sure, on one hand if you really like the show it's cool, and CBS has credited the USA marathons of NCIS for making it #1, but ultimately, I'd much rather have several different shows that haven't been broadcast in years. Sadly though, tv is a lot like a magazine, now, they keep current and don't even attempt to bring you anything different.
yankeesrj12 02-07-2010, 02:08 PM I don't see how you have nothing to watch. From Monday-Thursday my television viewing is full from 8pm-11pm, and my DVR is running full force. At this moment in time, I think my DVR is 79% full, and the oldest show on there is from 2-3 weeks ago!

Or any of those car insurance commercials too for that matter!
My beef with TV these days is:
- Too many reality shows. To all the cable and networks, quit being uber cheap and stop putting out all these garbage, trashy reality shows.
- Heavy editing of shows to compensate for much more commercial ads.
- The theme songs to the newer shows of today's TV shows. Are these even theme songs for most of these shows? A theme song for most shows ets up the tone for the show.
- Crunching/scrunching the closing credits of shows and/or also using generic split screen credits in favor of more lame advertising. On some shows, this too is also part of the show.
- Too many dramas and very few good sitcoms.
- The vast majority of today' kids shows.
- Horrid revivals of previous shows.
- Speeding up some shows to the point where some of the peoples' voices sound like they swallowed a half decade worth of helium.
Tubehead 02-08-2010, 02:33 AM i just don't see why theses station stay on the air:
bravoe. they usedto show moive. now its just reality show. i never heard of most of them
e-enterment i don't like thisstaiton. i like tv child stars. i like e holly wood ture story.
stlye. i think this station is boring.
the comdey channel. theyshould change their name. most of the tv show don't seem to be comdey.
tv land use to be great way to watch classic show thenthey went to reality show and moives. thenthey went into 1990 to 2000 sitcomes. i don't watch it. i been watching home inmprovment. i don't think it should be on their neither should everyone loves raymond. i 'll watch it any way. anything better then then roseann or cosby.
Zebra 3 02-08-2010, 07:56 PM I watch less and less TV for the following reasons:
- Unfunny sitcoms and no kick ass cop shows
- Editing movies and older shows to allow more crappy commercials
- Juvenile censorship practices
- Spam at the bottom of the screen incl. corporate watermark incrustations during the show or movie

I agree with you on those commercials. I also find commercials about obesity and weight loss to be extremely annoying. I do see that those are problems here in the U.S. but the issue is brought up way too much in the media.
Silly Lily 02-09-2010, 03:13 PM Five years ago I hated that so many shows started using pop songs as their theme songs. Now I hate that that theme songs/opening credits are gone altogether and we get a five second title screen.
I think music is overused in dramas. I don't need background music in every other scene and sometimes it's too loud and overpowers the dialogue.
I hate when shows go over their time period to try to get higher ratings for the next hour. For example, The Office and Grey's Anatomy always run a minute or two long.
There are some really fun, interesting reality shows out there. I just hate the dating ones.
Schmoopie 02-12-2010, 05:49 AM I was watching Anthony Bordain's No Reservations (I can't stand him) earlier and it just floors me that these TV shows will film and let the cast say whatever they want. Then when it airs, they beep everything out. If you can't say it on TV in the first place, what's the point in putting it in the show? Doesn't make sense to me at all. Makes me wonder if I were to watch the DVD's of the show, if the swear words would be heard.
MickeyMac 02-12-2010, 05:54 PM I've been reading a lot more books
Thats the way to go.

I have that same problem with the audition and Hollywood rounds on American Idol. The crass behavior of some of the auditioners annoys me. I do love the show once the actual competition starts.

I watched one episode today and just had to turn it it of because it was so sad, a 16 year old overweight girl with a big hairy doofus for a baby father who looked like he will never be able to get a decent job.
I almost starte crying
1960'sTVfan 02-15-2010, 03:45 PM TV started becoming a wasteland about 30+ years ago, it's only gotten worse as the years go by. To me, with the exception of a few shows the quality of current TV is very poor. And there is twice the commercial time now when compared to TV's golden age of the 1960's.

Ooh, yeah!
What especially gets me is the in the closing segment of the game show Jeopardy! the announcer says something to the effect of "Promotional consideration provided by" and leaves us viewers hanging by a proverbial thread, only to AIR A COMPLETE COMMERCIAL instead of just simply say the sponsor's name. Is Sony Pictures Television (the distributor for Jeopardy!) that DESPERATE to make a buck, or are they just plain GREEDY like those CEOs Obama criticizes??? I mean, sheesh, some people have very short attention spans!

LUNCH 07-26-2011, 04:06 PM What I hate about TV now?
Everything
I agree, that answer sums it up perfectly in one word. However one thing I wanted to mention that no one else did is how the morons they put on television nowadays seem to almost YELL or talk loud all the time and are just so un-professional.Just a bunch of obnoxious zero talents. You just have to view almost anything modern for a few seconds to notice it. I know they scrape the bottom of the barrel nowadays,,,but still. It's so different from the great tv actors and hosts etc. years ago who spoke in a relaxed professional way.
Goldilocks 07-26-2011, 05:22 PM I hate the way TV is geared toward the young anymore. It's like nobody else matters.
And this is a very stupid idea on the part of TV programming! Think about it: the core TV watchers are Baby Boomers and Gen X'ers. Most of the 20-somethings and younger are too busy texting and watching online to care about TV programming so they don't count. So to program stuff to try and get that age demographic to watch is ridiculous. They ain't watching anyway! WE are! Cater to us!!! (I think I speak for all Gen X'ers!)
Oh. One of the (many) things I hate about TV is the constant "bleeping" to edit all the cursing! I'm so sick of it. Some shows, *cough* reality shows *cough* that's all your hear are the dang bleeps!!
I hate lots of things about tv now. The squashed end credits (where you can't read anything about the program), commericials that air once, and then right after that air again 2 seconds (or so it seems) later.
The fact that opening credit songs are dying also ticks me off. What would Mash, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Get Smart or any of the many other shows that I remember from their theme songs alone, be without their opening themes? They wouldn't be the same, IMO.
I also don't enjoy the bugs in the corner of the screen.
I'm not a fan of too many reality shows, although I do enjoy the Food network, and Animal Planet quite a lot.
associate 07-26-2011, 08:18 PM -paid advertising shows
-the crappy cartoons today (the quality of the animation has well as the story as dropped)
-too many commercials
-I don't mind the network branding at the bottom but hate show commercials during a show (Michael Weston walking across the bottom of the screen during Royal Pains)
-most reality shows (I don't mind the original competion shows but hate shows like Housewives of New Jersey or Jersey Shore)
Regulus 07-26-2011, 08:52 PM My biggest :( :angryfire PET PEEVE :angryfire  :( - Commercials for Prescription Drugs and other Medical Products, as well as those for products dealing with various "Bodily Functions". These kinds of Ads are aired at all hours of the day, including times WHEN CHILDREN ARE WATCHING TV! Even Childrens Shows are not safe from these kinds of Commercials, Parents must CRINGE whenever a Program their Kids are watching goes to a Commercial Break, as there is NO INDICATION that these kinds of Ads are about to be aired. IMO Television has become UNWATCHABLE, thank Heaven for DVDs.
For those of you who think DVD Collecting is expensive, I was paying my Cable Provider $65.00 a Month in January, 2007, when I "Cut the Cord" and cancelled my Subscription. My Signature bears testimony to what $65.00 a Month can purchase over a 4 1/2 year period. I figured I watch about 1,100-1,200 TV Episodes a year, alomg with about 70 Movies a year. I let you do the math on how long it will take to watch them all. I do not miss anything that's on TV these days, and i figure my collection will last me the rest of my life!
mets82 07-26-2011, 10:03 PM Ive read just about all your posts about this, and I agree with you guys whoheartedly. I mean tv isnt what it used to be. I can even forgive having reality shows because I watch a few but now theres too many of everything and not enough variety. In other words, too many reality shows and dramas and what not. Things should be in moderation and not have too much of something.
Also, what burns me more and more is THE DAMN ADS AND POP-UPS AND CRAWLERS ETC.  They annoy me something fierce. I mean if this was the 70s or early 80s, I wouldnt mind it because where would you be able to get tv info.? Now, we have internet, I-Pads, I-Phones, Apps etc. that we can find tv show listings every second. We dont need constant promos and info. during the shows. I mean I watch a network channel for an hour or two, and I see the same promos over and over again. When will it end?

That's very admirable and completely awesome! When you put it in the terms that you have, it seems like a great idea to get rid of TV all together! Everything comes on DVD eventually anyway!
BTW, thanks everyone for all the replies! I had completely forgotten that I started this thread and I'm amazed at how many replies there are already!
I barely touch the TV anymore. It has gotten to the point where I've decided that instead of watching shows in realtime this season I'm going to start downloading them 3 hours after they air or watch on Hulu when they're uploaded during the week.
I mostly watch the MacFarlane cartoon block on Sundays and then FX is going to air Alcatraz on some day of the week, not sure when.

And it's even more annoying when the commercials are 10x's louder than the shows you're watching. It's like why is there HD yet the commercials sound more louder than the shows you're watching. I notice that I have to turn the volume down when a commercial plays and then when the show comes back on the volume is much lower than the commercials.
Am I the only one that notices this?

give a damn about the junky shows they give us.

Congress passed the C.A.L.M Act earlier this year, which will supposedly put an end to getting BLASTED out of you seat when a Commercial comes on, but it will supposedly take a year before all the things the networks are supposed to do will make this possible. What I would like to see Congress do is AMEND the "V-Chip" Law so parents who don't want their children to see Ads for "Adult" Products such as "ED Pills", Feminine Hygene Projects and the like will be able to BLOCK these kinds of Commercials on their TV Sets. :angryfire

Thank you for the reminder on the C.A.L.M. Act! I can't wait!
I second about the v-chip, I am so afraid of getting asked a question about that from my 6 year old, TG he watches only cartoon channels.

Even Kids Channels aren't safe from these kinds of Commercials. In September of 2006 I saw an ad for an "ED Pill" on the Nickelodeon Channel during an episode of Sponge Bob Square Pants. (I was serving Lemonade to a group of Children during a Bible-Study done by my Church at a Member's House). I SCREAMED for the Host, and she got to the room just in time to see the end of the Ad. She DISCONNECTED the Cable from the set, then got a DVD and a Player and set it up for the kids to watch. (One child said she'd seen this ad several times during that week on this Channel and on others during kid's shows). Both of us complained to the Network (Which DENIED having those kinds of Ads during that show), and the Cable Provider (Which said they have no control over what is advertised). The previous five years, I had seen the quality of what I was having to PAY to watch do nothing but head SOUTH, this was THE LAST STRAW. I began purchasing DVD Box Sets using whatever money I could scrounge, by January of 2007 I had accumulated over 1,500 Hours of TV Shows and Movies. I calculated this was over a year's supply, so I disconnected all the Cable Equipment and returned it to the Cable Company, cancelling my subscription. As I mentioned before, I now allot the money formerly used to pay my subscription fee to purchase more DVDs, and all you have to do is read my Signature to see how well I've done. This past week I FINALLY touched base with the Parent's television Council, and I plan to attend their next meeting and hopefully enlist their aid to get a Petition Drive aimed at amending the V-Chip Law so that it includes Commercials. BTW if I had it my way POLITICAL COMMERCIALS would get the highest rating (TV-MA) - since it's illegal for children under age 18 to vote those kinds of ads should be blocked as well!

megamanj2004 08-11-2011, 05:02 PM Congress passed the C.A.L.M Act earlier this year, which will supposedly put an end to getting BLASTED out of you seat when a Commercial comes on, but it will supposedly take a year before all the things the networks are supposed to do will make this possible. What I would like to see Congress do is AMEND the "V-Chip" Law so parents who don't want their children to see Ads for "Adult" Products such as "ED Pills", Feminine Hygene Projects and the like will be able to BLOCK these kinds of Commercials on their TV Sets. :angryfire
YEEEEESSSSSSSSSS! Let's bring on the C.A.L.M Act!
Regulus 08-11-2011, 06:14 PM The TV Industry is beginning to reap what it has sown. There's an article from the Associated Press (AP) today stating that up to 450,000 Households CANCELLED their Subscriptions to Pay-TV in the second quarter (May to June) of 2011. I have absolutly NO sympathy for them.
LET THEM ROT IN THEIR CORPORATE GREED! :angryfire    :happyface  :rotflmao:
bmasters9 08-12-2011, 05:38 AM Ooh, yeah!
This is why I always enjoy looking @ older game show credit rolls from YouTube. The announcers actually mentioned the products that departing contestants would get. That was much better than the way it's done today.
Here's an example from Card Sharks in 1978:

IllinoisTVFan 08-12-2011, 06:23 PM My pet peeves:
1)The sleaziness of tv shows, reality and scripted alike. I'm no prude, can handle a sex joke but when a whole plot is all about having sex I don't find it funny. Give me old shows when they actually were funny.
2)The non diversity of tv today. If you are thin, young, attractive and white you can get on tv. If you aren't, forget it. What happened to shows with older people or heavier people? Shows like I Love Lucy, the Honeymooners, the Jeffersons, or the Andy Griffith Show would not be popular today.
3)The shows that are carbon copies of others. I mean really do we need copies of the Bachelor? I don't think we even need that trash let alone inferior copies.
TVFactFan 08-13-2011, 05:35 PM What I hate is
Jersey Shore
Single Ladies
Teen Mom
I mean whatever MTV and VH1 airs-lol
IllinoisTVFan 08-13-2011, 05:48 PM Shows like those glamorize bad behavior (especially teen mom).
mets82 08-13-2011, 08:39 PM I agree about shows like Jersey Shore, Teen Mom etc. The thing is there is no difference in tv shows now. What I mean is that everything is reality tv or dramas (CSI, NCIS etc.) Why cant there be a variety of different shows? Some dramas, sitcoms, game shows, maybe a couple of reality shows.
I think the truth is that there is no moderation in tv shows anymore. Having a few reality shows is fine but now EVERYTHING is reality tv. There is a real over abundance of reality tv now. And lets not forget about the pop-up ads, commericals etc. that annoy people to no end.
Sammy Reed 08-18-2011, 08:12 PM What I don't like about TV nowadays...
Logos being stuck on the screen. Today's TV's and cable boxes have the "info" button so that we don't need that. I thought that when the all-digital law got into effect, since we can see channel logos on the screen when we change a channel or press the "info" button, the logos would stop being stuck on the screen. But here they are, still there.
Pop-up ads. I'm thinking about this chef on a "Little Rascals" episode that said "Mush! All the children love mush!" I keep remembering this guy whenever I think about how TV and cable execs must think about us. I guess they really think that we love the internet so dang much, that when we get away from it, and watch TV, we somehow want the things that were in our face on the internet to follow us to the TV - such as pop-up ads, little moving cursors, and other things like this. In a word: Wrong.
Mutilation of shows. In order to squeeze in more advertising - and sometimes to remove words and scenes from 70's and 80's sitcoms that are considered "politically incorrect" - shows are cut-up, sped-up, and otherwise mutilated.
"Junk shows". If there was a certain channel that specialized in a certain kind of programming - "FAKEality" shows, made-up "countdowns", "true" celebrity and/or rockband stories, etc. - it wouldn't be so bad. But since the cableopolies decided that each of the channels they own have to have their own "reality" show, "countdown" show, "true stories" show - it has gotten ridiculous.
Commercials for questionable products. When we can't watch a baseball game without having to put up with sex-pill commercials, somebody has to notice that this is not a desirable situation.
Channels straying away from their intended purpose. First thing that pops into mind, of course, MTV. TVLand started out as a rerun channel. When I hear about yet another "TVLand original series", I think, something's wrong here. There are others, but this post is getting too long already.
Questionable shows for kids. The cartoon shows with the dirty jokes for adults to get. And going back to earlier development, such non-development as "Teletubbies" and "Oobi".
To end this, I will quote someone who one wouldn't think of as someone who would give words of wisdom:
Bob Eubanks. When I watched an online interview of him (from last year), he said something that made me think, maybe this guy does have a brain after all!
"If you walk into a network today with 'Wheel of Fortune' and 'Jeopardy', they wouldn't even look at you. Because it 'skews too old'. The audience is 'too old'. Now, television better wise up. Because by the year 2025, there'll be twice as many people over the age of 50 as they are today. Not only that, those people will control 80% of the spendable income. So, these programmers that are programming to these little pimply-face kids are really making a serious mistake. Because as we live longer, as we exercise more, and our spending habits change - and births are down - you're gonna find that the elderly are gonna have much more influence at some time. They don't get it. They don't - get it."
LUNCH 08-19-2011, 01:15 PM Notice that as the amount of commercials shown has steadily gone up, television at the same time has steadily gone down.Endless commercials of course are not the only reason television in America has become such a mess, but they are definitely a part of the problem.

CommonTater 08-22-2011, 08:48 AM Schmoopie, I agree 100%!!!
What I hate about TV?
I hate the logos in the corners that are TOO BIG and animated advertising for other shows that take up the screen. They are distracting, they take away from the programs they want us to watch!
I am sick of the Reality Shows.
I am also sick of the commercials about the diseases AND drugs to treat all these diseases that make you think, WOW, if the disease doesn't kill you, the drug will!
I am sick of the trash shows! I want some shows that are really decent enough to sit and enjoy with the entire family without worrying about the language and content!
We can't pick up ANYTHING with an antenna (we live in the country, not close to any city) if we could I would NOT be paying for a Dish but my husband enjoys his sports and that is pretty much all he cares to watch on TV these days.

I feel sorry for those of you who have to subscribe to a cable TV Service because there is little, if any Channels to get OTA where you live. This is what Cable TV was ORIGINALLY intended for - After World War II Television Broadcasting TOOK OFF. (The first TV Broadcast in the USA was one of President Franklin D. Roosevelt opening the 1939 New York World's Fair). If you go to a Library and get a Microfilm Copy of The New York Times from that time you will actually see a TV Listings Page in it. The Programming then was quite limited, and the first TV Sets actually cost more than an Automobile! Then the War got in the way for the next few years, of course. But in the late 1940s the Price of TV Sets came down to the point where they were more affordable, and TV Stations began broadcasts all over the countries, particulary in the Cities. But that left a large chunk of the Population unable to watch Television, because they lived in Rural areas or in areas where mountainous terrain blocked the signals. (In the mid 1960s, I remember, as a Child, going to visit my grandparents, who lived on the shores of Lake Huron near Oscoda, Michigan, about 200 miles north of Detroit - They had a 50-foot-tall TV antenna erected beside their house, from it thay could get TWO TV Stations, an NBC Station from Bay City. Michigan and an ABC Station from Alpena, Michigan, and THAT WAS IT!) In 1946 someone Pennsylvania, who lived near Allentown but couldn't get any TV Signals because his Town was behind a Mountain that blocked any TV Signals got an idea. What would happen if an Antenna was erected on top of that Mountain, and a line was strung to his house in the Valley, could it pick up TV Signals? Yup! it worked, and THEN SOME! :) That gave that person ANOTHER idea. What if I strung a Line throughout my Town, and offer people the opportunity to tap this line and receive TV Broadcasts they otherwise couldn't get, for a price, of course? Community Antenna Television, AKA "Cable TV" was born. :D For the next 30 years, cable TV was something only those who lived in the Boondocks had. Us City Folk had access to all three Networks, plus PBS and several Independant TV Stations. So we didn't need Cable TV because there was nothing they had that we didn't have (Except for something called a "Weather Channel", a Panal with a Clock, a Thermometer, a Barometer and a Wind Speed Guage mounted on it, with a Camera that panned back and forthy whil Musak played in the background). In 1969 my Grandparents hooked up to cable TV and they got everything we got in Detroit, including a "Weather Channel" (Which, in 1974 actually made National News because it was the Target of a High School Prank, some studants from the local High School broke into the building that had the Weather Guages on it and covered them up with Skin Magazine Centerfolds)! Then in 1975 they got an New Channel. A Little something called "Cinema Plus". It was a channel that showed nothing but Movies, but get this, they were shown UNEDITED, including the "R" Rated ones, and there were NO COMMERCIALS. Of course, this came at a price, approximately $5.00 extra per month. Now us City Folk were envious, as they had something we wanted. As the next few years went by those who lived in the Sticks got even more new channels, and these ones didn't cost extra! Independant TV Stations from New York, Illinois and Georgia, which offered Vintage TV Shows and Movies, as well as their Local Major League Sports. Another station then appeared, showing nothing but sports, then an all-News Channel appeared. HEY! Where's Ours? Then. in the fall of 1979, news spread across the Grapevine. Cable TV was headed our way. By this time the following year it happened. Lines were strung and we were visited by Salesmen. They gave their pitch. Sign up and get 20 extra channels for $6.95 a Month. For and additional $6.95 you could get one of three additional "Premium" Channels, mainly HBO, Showtime and The Movie Channel. Get the first two and the third was tossed in for no additional charge. More Channels, More Variety and, we were promised, LESS COMMERCIALS! Life was good. When they "hooled up" my house I was like a Kid on Xmas Morning, OH BOY! One of the of the first things I remember doing when I got Cable was to deal with a Scourge that had plagued me since Childhood, mainly the one where you looked at the TV Listings, selected a Show to watch, only to find out the President decided to hold a News Conference, pre-empting YOUR Show! :( :angryfire But Not on this night! On a Friday Evening (Cannot Remember the exact Evening), President Carter had scheduled a News Conference to begin at 8:00 PM. At 8:05 PM HBO had the Movie Moonraker scheduled to begin. I invited my Friends over that evening for a  Party . We had Supper, then tuned in to TV to watch the beginning or the Press Conference. Then, five minutes later, we CERIMONIOUSLY changed the Channel to HBO, and watched James Bond save the World again! Over the next few years other new channels appeared. Whatever tickled your fancy, there was a channel devoted to it. It seemed the dreaded "Nothing good on TV tonight" was gone forever. Or so we thought. In the mid 1980s, I noticed two new trends. First, many Channels had a translucent logo of their Channel on the corner of the screen. No big deal, I heard it was put there to discourage "Pirates". Also something happened to late night TV. Originally home to Vintage 1940s and 1950s Movies, these were taken off and replaced with Programs where someone would spend 30 minutes or more hawking some Product that you couldn't find at your local store. Welcome to the world of "Infomercials" years later, other things began happening, and not for the better. Channels that served a "Niche" Audience began showing Programming that was definately not in that "Niche". Other Channels began showing nothing but "Tabloid" Programming. One Channel, devoted to Travelors, began showing Programs from one area so often I swear if an Alien Race intercepted signals from that Channel they'd conclude 99.9% of the Earth's Population visits a rather insignificant Town in the Southwest USA located approximately halfway between Los Angeles, California and Salt Lake City, Utah whenever they go on Vacation! Then the "Reality" Shows came on the scene. To make room for them other programs were taken off the air. Commercials increased in number, and were shown more and more often. I took a Stopwatch to a program I was watching and discovered 20 Minutes of the Hour was COMMERCIALS! One thing I noticed decreasing, beside the lenght of program that wasn't Commercials, was the "Stay Tuned" Messages. They were replaced with Messages that "Popped Up" AS YOU WATCHED THE PROGRAM! Sometimes they were accompanied by Sound effects that messed up whatever you were watching. Finally I decided enough was enough, and I finally Cancelled my Cable Subscription. I still live in a City, and though I have access to nearly 30 OTA Channels and Subchannels I seldom watch them. I'd rather watch my DVDs, knowing that NOBODY can butt-in to hawk something I'm not interested in watching. Many of the DVDs I watch are shows I grew up, but many others are shows I never watched when they originally were shown. IMO watching them is as fresh a breath air as anything that Hollywood can pass off as "New" these days. Even if it's nearly 60 years old, it's still "New" to me if I never seen it before! If I were to move to some town 200 Miles from any TV Station surrounded by 10,000 foot Mountains, I would most likely never subscrine to a Pay-TV Service, as IMO it simply isn't worth it!

SpenceOlchin 08-23-2011, 10:51 AM How about the same commercial playing 3-4 times during a show? Last night, I was watching the Hub for a half and hour, and the same Kool Aid commercial played at least 4 times. This has been happening for months.
Commercials for ED, male enhancement, weight loss products, phone "chat" lines, lawyers, drug recalls etc.
I also hate the popups, banner ads, text and other crap that ruins your viewing experience.
Credit crunches- Practically all networks do this. :(
Lack of variety among many stations. If it weren't for my guide, or the channel bug in the corner, I probably couldn't tell most stations apart.

no chance of them airing a show called 15 and motivated?-lol
waichingliu81 08-25-2011, 09:07 AM that network TV is so obsessed with reality and drama shows. so depressing. i can't sit through a lifetime's worth of that, it would do my head in. in fact TV is primed on taking itself too seriously. there is no variety whatsoever. this is why i go on youtube than watch TV.
one show i'm not a fan of is grey's anatomy- it has lasted longer than many of the shows that have been cancelled. which is startling to me because it's not that i hate it, it's just not my type of programme and one wonders why it is still on the air. i never saw the hype of it. it's the same plotlines every week.
SpenceOlchin 08-25-2011, 10:18 AM I feel the same way about shows like Two and a Half Men and How I Met Your Mother, but apparently many people enjoy these type of shows. I'd like to see more family friendly programming on tv. Most sitcoms, dramas and reality shows are just too crude and raunchy for the entire family.
Heidi Dawn 08-26-2011, 02:23 PM I find myself watching sitcoms on YTV (which airs Nickelodeon sitcoms in Canada such as iCarly and So Victorious) and Family Channel (which airs Disney sitcoms in Canada such as Hannah Montana, The Suite Life On Deck, and The Wizards Of Waverly Place). They remind me of the great family sitcoms that used to air on the main networks back in the 1980's. I got into these shows by watching them with my niece (I'm overprotective when I babysit her, she's not allowed to watch anything on the main channels that isn't rated TV-G).

Yet they CAN afford to pay $65-100+ a month to subscribe to a pay-TV Service. I still pay as much for my DVDs as I did when I Cancelled my Subscription in 2007. 4 1/2 year later, and my signature bears testimony to what one can do. I have no need for Pay-TV anymore. I get my news from the web, I no longer watch Sports (Hardly a day goes by without some Sports Figure, either College or Professional, getting mired up in some scandal). :angryfire IMO Stuff em both! I never said they pay for TV. The people I know personally don't get ANY TV because we live in an area where picking up with antenna is not possible. They can't even watch local news. I read an article the other day about how many people no longer pay for cable or a dish because of the economy, they can't afford it. My point was NOT who has cable or a dish, it was 'There are millions trying to survive and buying DVD's of shows is not at the top of their list.'
I just wish that everyone were able to get some channels with an antenna and it would be twice as nice if a channel was available that offered shows like RTV and Antenna TV.

You must not be a true fan of a team in any major sport if you can so easily decide to not watch sports for the rest of your life. For me, it's been an NBA lockout for a couple months now and even though there aren't games during these months I still find being deprived of free agency and trading in the offseason is terrible.

waichingliu81 08-27-2011, 07:52 PM I feel the same way about shows like Two and a Half Men and How I Met Your Mother, but apparently many people enjoy these type of shows. I'd like to see more family friendly programming on tv. Most sitcoms, dramas and reality shows are just too crude and raunchy for the entire family.
sadly, sex sells especially in TV world. i don't care for 2 and a half men, how i met your mother either.
Regulus 08-27-2011, 08:16 PM When I was younger, September meant going back to School, but it also meant new TV Series were making their debut. True, it meant many shows I liked to watch were leaving the airwaves, for good, but there were always new shows that showed promise. Some made it, others did not. I never envisioned the day where I wouldn't care what new shows were going to come on, but alas this day finally appeared a few years ago. Once again this year there is NOTHING among the next crop of new shows that tickle my fancy. Fortunatly many of the shows I used to like are now available on DVD, including many which "Didn't make it" and were cancelled after a few episodes. There are also several Shows that for all intents and purposes are "New Shows" for me. These were ones that came and went, but I didn't see the first time around because I was watching something else at the time. Now, thanks to DVDs I'll be able to watch them. AFAIC, there's NOTHING being shown on any of the other Channels that will keep me from watching them!

Precisely!
Right now I'm watching the 1970 Epic Disaster Movie Airport. After I finish watching that I'll watch episode one of The Black Stallion, which is my latest Acquisition. This will be followed by my "Alternative" Copies of season one of Rin Tin Tin and season two of Lassie (Jeff's Collie) before turning in for the night. These are all Movies and TV Shows they simply don't make anymore, and IMHO are A LOT BETTER than ANYTHING they are laughingly trying to pass off as   :rotflmao: :brent "Programming" :brent :rotflmao:   today. It's been almost five years now since I made my decision to go entirily Home Video, and forsake anything the Networks offer. At the turn of the 21st Century I began noticing a decline in the quality of what was being shown on TV. I observed lengthing Commercial Breaks, "Graffitti" Advertising Covering up the Screen (That's "Pop-Ups" Scrolls and Banners for those of you in Rio Linda! :D ), "Unscripted" Programming spreading across all the Channels like some Malignancy from Hades, and finally, Age-Inappropiate Advertising shown during Children's Shows! :angryfire I had enough, so I decided to do something about it. If you don't like whatever someones offering you, there are times you simply have to do it yourself! In this case, :D I FORMED MY OWN TV NETWORK! :D I watch whatever I want when I want to, and NOBODY Butts in to hawk something I have no interest in buying. Best of all, when I finish watching these disks, I can put them away, and watch them again some day if I so desire!
PS. 2007 was not the first time I spent time watching ONLY what was on DVD. In September of 2004 there was a period where I went Totally DVD for a week. It was not voluntary. Hurricane Francis knocked out Cable TV Coverage, and my Mother gave me $200 to get some movies so we could watch SOMETHING until the service could be restored. During this period I actually enjoyed the experience. Continous Programming, and NO INTERRUPTIONS. Unfortunately at that time the cost of going Totally DVD at that time was cost-prohibitive. Most Movies cost $15.00 and up, and TV Series ran $40-50 a season. "Bargain Bin" Movies were scarce at that time. But thing DID Change. Right now there are those on the East Coast facing a simular situation. I'm sure Hurricane Irene has knocked out Cable (And satellite) Service for an untold number of people. I cannot wonder how many of them will do what I did seven years ago, and scrounge some "Rainy Day" money and go to a store and get a number of DVDs to "Tide them over". Things have changed since I went through this. What cost me $200.00 in 2004 can probably be had for less than $50.00 and as everyone probably knows, you can purchase MORE than a month's worth of programming for LESS than what Pay-TV Providers charge (My Signature bears witness to what $65.00 a Month can purchase over a 4 1/2 year period!). Who knows, some of them may also like what they are watching, something will "click' in their heads, and they will NEVER return to watching Pay-TV, even when service is restored! :happyface

I so get what you're saying about missing the new fall TV season. New shows and new seasons of favorite returning shows. I miss anticipated fresh new and changed opening credits. Now we don't even have opening credits with theme songs.
On the flip side, its more reasons to enjoy collecting DVD sets from classic shows and the rare short-lived series.

I'm not sticking it to the Producers, I'm sticking it to the Programmers AND to their biggest source of Revinue, THE ADVERTISERS!
There was a time when Advertisers made Commercials that were more informative, and most were NOT presented to you in an Obnoxious or Offensive manner. And there were FAR LESS Commercials aired then as well. Commercial Breaks lasted only a minute, and at least half of that time was devoted to the shows Sponsor (Often the Show's Opening Theme was followed by a "Brought to you by:(Name of Sponsor)"). You didn't have to worry about what your Children saw on TV, as Commercials that graphically dealt with "Bodily Functions" were VERBOTEN. Sadly, this isn't the case today. Some Advertisers INSIST their Commercials are shown TEN TIMES an Hour, and Twice (or More) each Break. And they don't care WHO is in front of the TV WHEN their ads are aired. There are times when it seems you cannot go 15 minutes without seeing a Commercial for some "Adult Product" shoved down your throat, never mind it's 2:30 PM on a Saturday Afternoon, and Children are certainly watching. Parents must certainly CRINGE when their Children are watching a program, as there is absolutly NO Indication that one of these kinds of Commercials is about to come on. I'm also fed up with the way Providers handle TV Shows these days. Not only to they cut older shows to ribbons to make room for all those Commercials, they have the audacity to Splatters Ads all over the Screen DURING THE PROGRAM ITSELF! The Corperations that own the Networks and the Stations have NO REGARD to the Viewers of their Programs. Heaven forbid their Stock Dividens don't have at least 7 digits in them (and I'm not counting the decimal points either)! :angryfire But I know I'm not alone. Last year, for the first time in History, Pay-TV actually LOST Customers, and this year more people have discontinued their subscriptions. Oh yes, you can blame "The Economy", but this didn't happen during the last THREE Recessions (1980-1982, 1990-1991 and 2001-2002). During those declines, Pay-TV still GAINED Customers. But back then, they still had decent Programming to watch, so people continued to spend money, even if it was tight. But since 2002, the QUALITY of what the providers offer has done nothing but DECLINE, while subscription prices have done nothing but CLIMB. Listen folks, it is written - A HOUSE DIVIDED AGAINST ITSELF CANNOT STAND. Companies that continually raise the prices for their Product AND lower the Quality of their product do not stay in business for long. Their Customers realise they are no longer getting the same value for the product, and they cease buying it, and either look elsewhere for it, or seek an alternative to it. This is what I did 4 1/2 years ago, and what nearly 2,000,000 have done since last year. They no longer see it worth spending over $100 a Month for TV, and they have sought alternative means to get their Programming.
Sammy Reed 08-28-2011, 10:46 PM Oh yes, you can blame "The Economy", but...
Well, it is kinda true. With higher prices and lower quality, The "economy" for cable TV nowadays is pretty bad.

SpenceOlchin 09-01-2011, 06:54 PM Fortunately, TBS got a lot of criticism for that in 2008 and stopped doing it. But, it does show you how out of control and arrogant many of these networks have become over the years. Bill Engvall's show also got cancelled a little over a year later.

I have never seen that pause advertisement TBS did. Now THAT is absolutely ridiculous. It's one thing if you have a small logo quietly pop up for 5 seconds or something but literally pause your program like that!? That's the reason we have commercial breaks! That hopefully will never be seen again.
megamanj2004 09-04-2011, 01:15 AM And I thought about something something else with a lot of these reality shows, especially the competition-based ones:
They show too many sneak previews of the next episodes and a lot of them almost gave away too much of the outcome to the point that if you catch on enough, you'll see how anti-climatic most of these competition-based reality shows really are.

Sammy Reed 09-18-2011, 01:41 PM One thing I forgot:
Those lines the TV bigwigs put on a football field, making it look like they are really on the field. They apparently want us to think that "1st and 10" magically flashes on the grass like that as well.
I wonder what's next? An ad for what's on tonight at 8 from the 50 to the 40? An animated ad for what's on at 9 from the 40 to the 30?
Since when (Never mind why. They don't care about why.) did these executive morons get the idea that when we're watching a football game on TV, we want it to look like "Madden '95"?
I guess they're not going to broadcast another "snow bowl" anymore, because they figure they'll have a rough time convincing us that those lines just show up on the snow.

I've mentioned this before, but "Pop-Up" ads SUCK!
Some of them are accompanied by Sound Effects, and they come on at the worst possible times! You are watching a Program with a Hunting Scene. A Hunter stalks his prey, trying to be as quiet as possible, lest he spook his prey. Suddenly a load ROAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRROOOOOSH!!! Pierces the silence as a Squadron of Jet Aircraft "Strafes" the bottom of the screen, followed by a banner telling you a Documentary about Military Aircraft will follow the Movie. Or you might watch a program that takes place along the US - Mexico Border. A Family of "Wetbacks" is attempting to sneak across the Border, keeping a watchful eye for "Gringos". To make it realistic, the Family's members all speak in Spanish. What are they saying? According to the "Subtitle" They are telling you that the County south of where you live is under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning until 10:45 PM.

ajgenard 10-29-2011, 03:01 PM Judging by this thread, the 2 most common themes are technical aspects of advertising and low quality programming. The pop-up ads recently reached the breaking point (likely due to the large number of complaints) and changes have been made for the better. They have drastically cut back on the obtrusiveness. And the CALM Act will be fixing the "commercial blast."
And with the addition of several sitcoms this season, plus others likely to be added next year, the programming is beginning to shift back towards some variety. These are very small steps and there is still a long way to go for serious reform. But it proves television can change for the better. I am willing to bet that every issue raised on this board from reality programming to ED pill commercials will eventually reach the breaking point and be fixed in one way or another. There is definitely a change in the wind that favors us. I look forward to television 10 years from now :p

I agree with a lot of what you said. I, too, think, informercials or paid programming stinks. I dont understand calling yourself a channel, whether it be broadcast, local or cable and you have hrs. of paid programming. I do think its a waste of space and better suited for tv shows.
You mention late night programming. I actually started a thread about that. Actually having first run late night programming. I questioned if a channel with late night programming would work. I think it would.
Yong Fang 10-30-2011, 11:10 AM I am an American living and working in China, and have been for the last 10 years.
I watch my TV shows online. I have two different websites that I use, and I have little trouble watching the shows I watch per week. Sometimes it can be slow and a pain in the butt, but usually it works well. I watch all the shows for the season, plus another website has some older shows (been watching Barney Miller for example, a show I have not seen in years.) May I say to the websites and people who put these shows on, Thank You and Bless you. Really. I get my weekly Parks and Recreation because some good soul taped it and put it online.
There are some obstacles. You Tube is banned in PR China. This sux because I used to watch a lot of current event stuff on there. LiveLeak is a good substitute, but is not as good as YouTube (like having a hamburger instead a T-Bone perhaps).
The second thing is not being able to stream shows from legal websites because "Content cannot be streamed into your area/country/postal code etc." This really makes me     and I wanted to pull my hair out when I was denied these sites. This isn't China's doings, this is the copyright laws in the USA (and other countries too). But this is the internet and I can get around that. The only thing that is hard to impossible to see/get that I miss is NFL/college football. But one can buy an NFL package in China and I have watched games here, and they do show the Superbowl on Chinese television (on Monday morning!) I saw an NFL game this year at a friend's house (through his paid NFL package), and was fascinated by the commercials, since I really haven't seen any commercials in a decade. Most of them was for some kind of technogy, either computers, a website, mobile phones, telecommunications etc, with the rest being car and insurance commercials (Geico with that annoying yet cute, lizard).
If you have a computer with an internet connection, WHY are you paying for cable? HULU, the various television networks and various websites have these shows and one can watch them whenever they want. It is not too difficult perhaps to connect the computer to the television and there you are. Again, why pay for cable? Yes, people are cancelling their subscriptions because of the economy and I bet a lot are stopping because of the fact that one can watch shows for free from the network itself. If and when I move back to the USA, I wont get cable. That's a waste of money.
Personally, I think TV now is absolutely wonderful. Yes, there is a lot of crap on. But there has always been a lot of crap on television, the only difference is that there are many more cable channels making a lot more programming than before. We have so many, many, many more choices in programming than even 10 years ago, which makes it seem that there is more crap on. Snooki is not on every single channel. And if there is just nothing on, there is the internet, there are DVD's.
There are a lot of excellent programming that is not made by the major 4 networks. In no order, Breaking Bad, Mad men, Monk, Reno 911!, Dexter, Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire and many others. Again, if these shows are current, one can find watch them from the website, the ones from the 00's can easily be found on websites.
I dislike most of the reality shows. Survivor, Big Brother, the Kardashaians, Jersey Shore, etc., but there are some that I do like a lot. I love Swamp People, Intervention, Hoarders, JUNKies (about making inventions from a scrapyard), Billy the Exterminator, COPS, An Idiot Abroad! I dont like the cooking shows, but some do and how many of you got a kickass meal made from your spouse who was watching Iron Chef or Jerkwad Kitchen Guy and learned something? I dont like the dance/contest shows with snarky judges, but someone does. There are 50 to 100 channels to cruise through, there is something on.
Sitcoms seems to be running somewhat strong. I watch six different USA sitcoms which are at least in their second season. I will say that I have no interest in any of the network offerings for 2011-12. But I have, again, many shows that I do like currently to keep me busy plus 60 years of television to fall back on when I am willing to do the gold mining online for them. I guess I am in the minority in this discussion, but television is a hulluva lot better than it was even in the 1990's, much less the 70's and before. There was a lot of quality usually pre cable because there has to be. Now it's a niche, there are three or four channels offering good programming out of 50 to 100. But now we get to choose what we want, and when we want to watch our shows. No more running home to be on time to watch your program. How can anyone say that TV is worse now than 30 years ago? That's crazy.
ajgenard 10-30-2011, 11:26 AM Crusade AGAINST?
I'm FOR Amending the V-Chip Law so that it includes Commercials!
If that is done and Cable/Satellite allows a-la-carte channel selection I'll be glad to resubscribe. Here's what I would choose:
All Local Channels and Subchannels
ESPN
ESPN 2
Versus
Speed
TCM
HGTV
And that would be it! :D
LOL yeah that's what I meant - fixing the loophole that currently allows commercials to go through it. When cable finally goes a la carte I will once again buy it.
Yong Fang 10-31-2011, 01:46 AM I watched the first new episode of Beavis and Butthead last week where the boys were watching TV and it was "Jersey Shore" with that Snooki girl and a couple of fake tan hairbags and I was thinking that the only way I could watch that was if I was tied to a chair and shot up with speed with my eyelids cut off.
But it was an episode where they made real Italian pizza and damn that looked good!
Schmoopie 10-31-2011, 02:37 AM I used to love watching Nickelodean (sp?) but even that station is awful now.
floyd2006 11-01-2011, 12:32 AM If it wasnt for Sports, I think I could do without tv. I get my news from the internet and any other good show I like to watch I get from netflix. Why not just cut out the middle man?
James28 12-11-2011, 08:15 AM Another thing that bugs me about TV is the 18-49 demographic. Wish we didn't have to care about demographics in this century. The oldest viewers of a network TV show may be 48, though as time progresses, a viewer will be way past 49 by the time a show (on that network) ends. Some of the actors on that network TV show will be past 49 themselves.
Regulus 12-11-2011, 08:40 AM I saw an article this week about Investors who are worried about the Multi-Billion Deals ESPN is making with Professional Leagues such as the NFL, as well as the "Retransmission" Deals Pay-TV Providers are making with the OTA Networks (That's ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC and CW for those of you in Rio Linda!) as well as the Local Stations. The Money for all those deals has to come from somewhere, Pay-TV Subscribers can expect HUGE increases in their Cable Bills, as well as even MORE Commercials during the programs. :angryfire As expected, these Investors feel this will lead to the loss of even more subscribers, as they go and seek out cheaper alternatives. :bye:
Look for my new Avatar on New Year's Eve! :D

I agree with you about that. I'll be irrelevant in 4 years. lol Even in my 20's and 30's I hated to hear about the demo. It wasn't always this way though.
mets82 12-11-2011, 02:01 PM Yeah that demographic shouldnt be. I mean when are the endless promos, end credits crunch, etc. going to an end? You know Soapnet is one of the worst culprits. They show literally the same promos every segment of a show!! ENOUGH ALREADY!!!

Yes, indeed! When I was coming up, that wasn't one bit a problem. Why do these people think that we'll want to see some of the dumbest shows around and keep pushing them as if we do?! Enough already!
