View Full Version : Small Wonder - The Complete First Season DVD Review
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la- la- la- la- la-LA! She's a small wonder lovely and bright in soft curls! She's a small wonder, a child unlike other girls... Yes, that only means Small Wonder is FINALLY coming to DVD! Small Wonder: The Complete First Season finally debuts on DVD for the first time on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010 from Shout! Factory!
When genius cybernetics engineer Ted Lawson (Dick Christie) brings home his top secret invention, a Voice Input Child Identicant or better known as V.I.C.I. (Tiffany Brissette), life becomes anything but mechanic for the Lawson family. With Ted’s boss and nosy neighbors the Brindles next door, his family must pass off Vickie as a real child. It’s easy for his wife Joan (Marla Pennington) who can’t help dotting on her like a real daughter, but harder for his precocious son Jamie (Jerry Supiran) who uses Vickie to do his homework and ward off Harriet Brindle (Emily Schulman), the annoying redheaded girl next door. The series also has Edie McClurg as Mrs. Bonnie Brindle, Harriet’s busybody mother.

Small_Wonder_Lover 01-28-2010, 03:18 AM As Joan Lawson would say, "That makes sense!"
Sorry, couldn't resist! "No na na no no no!"
TeeVeeCloset 01-28-2010, 11:15 AM Great indepth review Pav and it was very cool to have you write the review, nothing against the other usual reviewers, I love them all...but my fellow NJ friend, a great review, which was truly deserved for Shout's release of "Small Wonder, Season 1".
Just a few thoughts, first.....Small Wonder actually premiered in 1985 when Channel 5 in New York was still a true independent, owned by metromedia, call letters were WNEW-TV.....as the series continued they became Fox owned and eventually became WNYW-TV.....something I still will never get over...lol...just look at how the New York WPIX is now embracing their rich history by even selling 11 Alive, Chiller Theatre, & Yulelog memorabilia. But I digress.......
Pavan 01-28-2010, 11:50 AM Thanks TeeVeeCloset! Wow, nice that you got credited on the case!! I did indeed forgot to detail the special features menu. I'll edit that in later today. I knew you had said you contributed to the set, but I was thinking maybe you drew something for the Fan Art Photo Gallery or something.

Thank you as well my fellow NJ buddy....even though we are all so busy, I am trying to finally make some commercial use of my extensive television archives which include memorabilia, professionally shot copyright owned interviews with legendary stars, and original broadcast films, which of course companies would need to handle the legal clearance end of those. I am slowly building a relationship with some, but won't even approach the biggies, as they are as you know sometimes very difficult to deal with. Thank you for your response, my best to you as always and I continue to give sincere compliments to everyone involved in this wonderful site. It is the only one I participate in....
TV_Fan 01-30-2010, 05:35 PM The trailer for season one is up on youtube. I laughed even just watching that. I can't wait to get this set. This is definitely going to be an interesting experience rewatching this cheesy 80s show.
catlover79 01-30-2010, 09:57 PM Sounds great!! How awesome it is that Edie McClurg is on one of the commentaries. Just too bad Tiffany Brissette and Emily Schulman aren't present, but maybe they will be next time.
robby76 01-30-2010, 10:07 PM Thanks for the review! Can't wait for this... not long now.
Bachu 02-09-2010, 08:43 AM I will have a longer wait as mine has to ship from the States to the UK. :(
comedy 02-15-2010, 05:12 AM Bachu, just do what I do, order it from amazon canada !! They are faster than amazon usa.For example , one time I ordered something with expedited international shipping from them.It shipped on a tuesday, on friday it arrived to Greece!!For small wonder, with the expedited shipping from canada to greece, its costing me like only 3 dollars more than amazon usa. Also on amazon usa it would take at least 10 days to arrive, but with canada 4 days tops!!:)
Bachu 02-16-2010, 08:56 AM Too late as mine has already shipped. I will bear that in mind for future R1 dvds though. Thanks
comedy 02-16-2010, 09:43 AM Thats a shame bachu, because you could possibly had it by maybe this friday.Mine is scheduled to ship from amazon canada today, and I might have it by friday, or monday at the latest.Ill let you know, how long it took when I receive it.
TV_Fan 02-18-2010, 07:29 PM I just got my set in the mail today. I can't wait to start watching it. I see where you were credited TeeVeeCloset and I'm glad Shout! was able make use of your tickets. See, it does pay to save these types of things :)
tazz765 02-19-2010, 06:12 AM I got mine yesterday (which is good since according to the tracking I wasn't suppose to get it to the 22nd).
comedy 02-19-2010, 08:51 AM Bachu, I received my copy this morning!!! It pays to use amazon canada with expedited shipping,:) cant wait to watch a couple episodes tonight !!!:)

You are very kind and it was an honor to provide the tickets and get credit, I've worked in TV for 30 years, but I was still thrilled and honored to get credit on the "Small Wonder" DVD set!....I attended the taping in 1985 when I spent many parts of the year on the west coast....I went as a VIP (not bragging), had such a crush on Marla since her "ABC "Soap" days, she looked so beautiful....now I find out in the commentaries on episode one she was very-unhappily married at the time!....lol....but I digress, but that's how I was able to retain my tickets, because they usually make you give them back....I was a fan of the show and actually provided Shout with a studio picture as well, but they couldn't use it, too far away I guess......anyway in regards to "paying to keep these type of things"...yes it does, problem is over my 30 year career I've kept everything and am currently running out of room!...lol....I'm trying in my priceless spare time to provide material to DVD companies, such as tickets, copyright owned celebrity interviews, I have one with Alan Young, but they don't seem interested, I know they have Stu's (a friend & associate for 20+ years) wonderful interviews, but mine were professionally shot multi-camera TV interviews and I thought it would make a nice addition to an ED set. Again thanks for the nice coments.
tazz765 02-19-2010, 09:22 PM I attended the taping in 1985 when I spent many parts of the year on the west coast....
Do you happen to remember what episode(s) you went to see?
TeeVeeCloset 02-19-2010, 10:33 PM Do you happen to remember what episode(s) you went to see?
So sorry but in the 25 years that have passed I can't remember a thing about the episode, even when I am watching the set, I just finished disc one, I don't remember the episodes, so it's just like watching them for the first time.
comedy 02-20-2010, 07:20 AM I cant make out the date on those tickets , on the dvd set.If you could tell us the date, I would guess the episode aired about 3 weeks after the taping .That way we could guess the episode.Ive just finished disc 1, and im enjoying the show just as much as I did in 1985.
Marvo301 02-20-2010, 07:51 PM I just watched the first four episodes on disc one and I really enjoyed it. I'd forgotten what a fun show this is.
TeeVeeCloset 02-21-2010, 11:33 AM I cant make out the date on those tickets , on the dvd set.If you could tell us the date, I would guess the episode aired about 3 weeks after the taping .That way we could guess the episode.Ive just finished disc 1, and im enjoying the show just as much as I did in 1985.
when I get home I will look at the exact date, but I know it was June 1985....I'll reply again hopefully by tuesday at the latest. They do say in the commentaries, (they are very interesting) that they taped almost year round due to the worry that the kids, especially Vicki would grow up too fast, (a robot shouldn't age!) so the theory that each episode usually would aired weeks after taping might not hold true for Small Wonder...I remember the tickets are a first season episode, I went several times but I mostly remember a second or third season taping because thats when I got to meet Marla and nearly melted...lol....but I didn't even have tickets for those tapings going as a VIP. They even had front row seats roped off for me!
comedy 02-21-2010, 01:41 PM Thanks, always nice to hear about experiences like that.:)
comedy 02-21-2010, 01:48 PM Since you say it was june 85, it sounds like you attended 1 of the first 6 episodes that were ever taped.Because the shows first episode aired in september 85.Thats pretty neat!!!!
TeeVeeCloset 02-27-2010, 12:19 PM Since you say it was june 85, it sounds like you attended 1 of the first 6 episodes that were ever taped.Because the shows first episode aired in september 85.Thats pretty neat!!!!
Sorry it took so long to find out the exact date of the tickets I supplied to Shout...I was wrong about the year....the date is June 13, 1986....that is the date I got the VIP treatment (again not bragging) and met Marla. I went to 4 tapings total during the series run but cannot remember which episodes. Hope that helps....just watched episode 2 on disc 2 today, "The Bully"...I always watch in order and I have been listening to the commentaries, which I usually don't do, but they are very fun and interesting, If the episode has a commentary, I watch it right after watching the same episode.
comedy 02-28-2010, 01:36 AM Thanks, but this means since season 1 ended in May 17 , according to the dvd slimcases.Looks like you were a part of the very first tapings of season 2.
Bachu 03-01-2010, 08:59 AM I watched the first disk over the weekend. The first few episodes were a bit poor but it soon picks up and is not as bad as I thought it would be.
The cover photo is a photoshop effort. Look at the picture on one of the slimline cases where Marla holds the back of the dress back. They have just that photo and have removed Marlas hand. You can tell because Vickis dress just ends and doesn't have the 'fringe' that it should have on both arms.
I also noticed that the living room set does not feature in the pilot episode at all. Also, at the end of the episode where they are all eating chilli-dogs(?) (one episodes 2-6 I think), as the credits appear over the last few seconds of the episode before the closing credits start you will see Tiffany go out of character and talk to Jeremy. Look at the sudden casual way she acts and the way she has her feet at an angle.
I love it when she nearly breaks up laughing such as when she dances like Michel Jackson and the audience goes wild.
The commentaries are good. It is a shame they didn't do a then and now photo comparison as the Fan Art gallery is just, well, bizzarre. For some reason Jeremy Superien(?), from the way he talks reminds me of Beavis and Butthead.
I cannot believe how over-lit everything was. It really does look studio bound.
Also, the episode with the breaking of the teapot and the scene at dinner where it leaks is the same plot line as the Brady Bunch when Peter smashes his mothers vase and they all sit around the dinner table and it starts to leek. I think Howard Leeds worked on the TBB as well???
comedy 03-02-2010, 07:53 AM Yes , he also did brady bunch. And if im not mistaken, silver spoons as well.
Bachu 03-02-2010, 08:36 AM I watched The Adoption last night. So very funny!!!
The line where Marla says that Jamie is fond of Harriott and Harriotts mother says something like, "I can't imagine why."
Also, Jamie in a dress. Was there an episode where the parents were also dressed that way?
Bachu 03-15-2010, 01:25 PM I have now watched the set from start to finish. Despite a poor opening the show really picks up and IS funny. I hope the following seasons get a release as I only ever saw the first season.

Yep, that was the second-season episode "My Robot Family" (production title "Who's the Boss"--not to be confused with another '80s sitcom of the same name), where Jamie accidentally dumps the family's reservations for a trip to Mexico, and that night he dreams that the others (not just Vicki, but also Ted and Joan) are robots under his control (all wearing that same red and white dress and all talking in a monotone).
Bachu 05-05-2010, 07:30 AM Sorry it's been so long but thanks for the answer.
Anyone know whether a 2nd season dvd release is on the cards?

Yes http://www.shoutfactory.com/browse/313/exclusives.aspx#
catlover79 06-12-2010, 05:40 PM I just took the DVD set out of the library and am watching it now. It's the first time I've seen this show since I was a kid. I am especially enjoying the commentaries. :D
catlover79 06-14-2010, 02:02 AM I just finished it. What a fun trip down memory lane. It was great hearing commentary from a good percentage of the cast, including Warren (Daryl Bartley)! We know that Tiffany Brissette is now working as a nurse in Denver and that Emily Schulman is now a talent agent, but I wonder whatever happened to Paul C. Scott (Reggie). The last credit I saw for him on imdb was a 1996 episode of Baywatch Nights.
