Unemployment Rose In 43 States Last Month
At 14.6%, Michigan Has Nation's Highest Jobless Rate

Washington -- Unemployment rates rose in 43 states last month, the government said Friday, painting a bleak picture of the job market that illustrated nationwide data released two weeks ago.

The rise in joblessness was a sharp change from November, when 36 states said their unemployment rates fell. Four states -- South Carolina, Delaware, Florida and North Carolina -- reported record-high jobless rates in December.

New Jersey's rate, meanwhile, rose to a 33-year high of 10.1 percent while New York's reached a 26-year high of 9 percent. Analysts said the report showed the economy is recovering at too weak a pace to generate consistent job creation. "A lot of states that had started to add jobs (in November) gave up those gains in December," said Sophia Koropeckyj, managing director at Moody's Economy.com.

Texas and Georgia lost more jobs in December than they had gained the previous month, she noted, while Arizona and South Carolina lost nearly as many as they had gained. That is consistent with nationwide trends. Employers shed a net total of 85,00 jobs in December, the government said earlier this month, after notching a small gain of 4,000 jobs in November.

In another nationwide trend, long-suffering states like California and Michigan saw their jobless rates stabilize even as they continued to bleed jobs. That's because thousands of frustrated workers gave up hunting for work and dropped out of the labor force, which means they aren't included in the unemployment rate.

California lost 38,800 jobs. But its unemployment rate was unchanged at 12.4 percent, the fifth-highest in the nation. That's because 107,000 people, or 0.6 percent of the state's workforce, gave up and stopped job-hunting.

Michigan shed 15,700 jobs, but 31,000 people left the labor force. That caused the state's jobless rate to fall slightly, to 14.6 percent from 14.7 percent. Michigan has the nation's highest unemployment rate.

Nationally, more than 600,000 people left the labor force in December, according to government data. The large exodus from the labor force indicates that "unemployment is a lot worse than the numbers suggest," Koropeckyj said.

Yeah unemployment rate in Cleveland is pretty bad too especially for blacks. I know that there's a lot of blacks unemployed in Detroit too. That's why i'm sticking with the 2 jobs i got. Sometimes people tell me to change jobs but for what? LOL.

Well at least Michigan is number one for something. We have had the highest unemployment rate for over five years now, and thats largely due to the decline in the automotive and manufacturing industries. Despite that I still have my faith, and am staying positive even though some days its not easy.

I have a friend who is originally from Michigan and really wants to move back for family reasons but he is waiting until things get a little better there.

My county has like 10% unemployment, so we're not that far behind.

Well, I for one, am thankful to be living where I am living right now. AFAIK, we have a pretty low unemployment rate (3.9%, according to a July 2009 article I found on my town's newspaper site) I had no problems transitioning between jobs when I quit my last job last year to move over to the one I'm at now. Only took two months - thankful for that also. I know people who look for work for a LOT longer than two months. Like hell I'm leaving my job anytime soon.

So... Come to ND! There are jobs here for you guys!

I fully intend to move back to Michigan someday, but not until I stand a chance of finding a job there.

That's the old hometeam, #1 in unemployment, dead last in the NFL.

I feel bad for unemployed people because i know it's hard to get a job and keep it. I feel that a lot of jobs take advantage of employees especially blacks and hispanics because most jobs won't give you medical and dental benefits. Some jobs wanna pay you a low salary and that's wrong also. Unemployed blacks can't afford to go to job training school so they can learn some job skills because they don't have the money. Plus a lot of black men don't like school anyway. So that's another reason why they won't go LOL. I was unemployed 8 years ago and i wanted to commit suicide because i got tired of waiting on jobs to call me. I lucked up and got 2 jobs now and i'm thankful because i was so depressed 8 years ago being unemployed. I know i don't have a lot of job skills and that's why it was so hard for me to get a job back then. I've been fired from several jobs and i've quit a few jobs. I'm not afraid to admit that i have a learning disability unlike most unemployed black men who are afraid to admit they have a problem learning and remembering how to do a job because that's what's preventing them from getting a job. Some other things that prevents unemployed black men from getting a job is because they have a criminal record and they refuse to wear the right clothes and talk proper when they go to a job interview.

I regret voting for Barack because he hasn't done much to help poor unemployed blacks get jobs but i can't put all the blame on him for so many people being outta work. Getting a job is tough and it can be depressing and frustrating when you aren't working. That's why i understand some people who kill themselves because they're poor and unemployed. I don't judge suicidal people and i wish that people would stop judging suicidal people because being poor and unemployed can make you wanna kill yourself.

Just think...November 2010 will be the Turn-Around!

I can't find a second job and if I get another pay-cut from my job...I'm on strike! (I won't picket, I'll just stay in bed as protest)!

aw hell, doesn't matter who's at the top - we have a nerd of a prime minister and we're in the same boat as you guys. I don't know what the current rate is for us, but I know it's high. And all know is that I've been out of work for two years now, no hope of anything in site and got a letter yesterday saying I owe the government $251 by Feb. 8th. I'd love to know how they figure that one. Sure - pick on the little guy who's avoided going on welfare. All governments are ****ed up.

I know what it feels like to be unemployed and i hated it because i wanted to die. I hated not having any money, not being able to eat and not having a car. I'm not a good student. So that's the reason why i don't wanna go back to school to learn a job trade. My mom tried to talk me into going back to school to learn a job skill but i don't want to. Not only do i not like school but school also costs too much money. Me not being a good student is the same problem that unemployed poor black men have and it's also the reason why a lot of them didn't go to college but they won't admit it. When i was unemployed 8 years ago, i didn't even think to go to social services and apply for welfare and food stamps but if i was to lose my job again, i'd do that now. Back then i would've been embarrassed to get on welfare if i wasn't working but it's better to be getting money and food from social services than not having that at all.

I really think Mr. Obama is doing the best he can under the circumstances. He told us when he took office that no miracles were going to happen overnight and so far he's been right. The only thing I'm upset about is that he has not tried to get the large corporations to get their service centers and customer service phone banks out of places like India and China and back here in America. Sure, it would be more expensive to do, but at the end of the day, the service reps would actualy understand you better.
