I just found this on YouTube - this is one of my local news programs, WJW-8 (then a CBS affiliate, now a FOX affiliate) reporting on the plane crash.

That's understandable.

The image of seeing that plane burning on TV Jan. 1, 1986, is forever etched in my brain so I can't bring myself to click on it, either. :(

I remember when this happened. A real tragedy. I thought I could bring myself to watch that clip, but I couldnt. I had to turn it off. :(

Thankfully, they don't show much of the plane. Most of it is stock footage of O&H and an interview he did later in life, plus a clip of him singing Garden Party.

Ironically, I saw Nelson at a concert in Dubuque, Iowa just one month before he died. It was a really good show, and I'm glad I was able to see him before he passed. I remember being really shocked and saddened by the news.

It's hard to believe that he'd be 69 today had he lived.

^ Not to mention 2 weeks marks the 24th anniversary of the tragedy. :(

I can honestly say that the news of his death affected me more than hearing of the death(s) of other celebs. I was at a New Year's Eve party and right after my boyfriend and I got there, one of the people we were meeting there had the strangest look on her face when we walked up. First thing out of her mouth: "Did you hear about Ricky Nelson?" (I hadn't) and I just said. "Oh...no..." My stomach dropped and I just stood there and asked, "Well.. how do they know it was him?" It didn't seem right, you know? The first mental image that kept going through my head was when he was on SNL, singing "Dream Lover."

Awwwww...:bighug: I was just 6 when he died, so I didn't know of him then. I do share the same birthday with Matthew and Gunnar (September 20) although they are 12 years older than me.

Monika thank you for this link. While it is sad and poignant, it does give us another memory of a fine and talented man and actor. He was something special.

You're welcome - I thought it was an interesting clip and very respectful of Rick.

I was 6 when Rick Nelson died. I remember watching a movie on TV with my parents on New Years Eve, and the bottom of the screen the news scrolled across the TV and both parents just screaming "Oh My God" and maybe even crying. At the time I didn't understand why, or even who Ricky Nelson was, but even being that young that vivid image of their reaction I can recall like it was 10 minutes ago.

As I've grown older, and people who I watched on TV have passed on, I now know how sad and shocked they felt when it happened. What a tragic lost.

It was bad enough for the family to lose their brother, son, father the way they did, but then the reports about freebasing only added to their misery. I will never forgive our news media for handling that story the way they did. As a fan, it was sad that he went down just as he was getting ready to do some new music again. The few tracks that have leaked out from his final sessions - Singing the Blues, One After 909, So Long (aka You Got Me Gone) - are good rock and roll like the things he did in the late 50's. They're not completed masters, but I think, if presented to the fans in the proper context, they'd make a nice additon to Rick's catalog of music. Other artists - the Beatles, Elvis, Buddy Holly - have had similar stuff released, I don't know why the Nelsons think they can't do the same with Rick. These tracks surely would not tarnish his legacy.

Those FALSE news rpts abt the drug use were JUST AWFUL. Talk abt adding salt to a wound...his poor kids. Also so sad that Rick had to struggle so much in his 30s & 40s poor guy.
