I just got the GREAT news!

February is SUCH a quick rollout for Season 6 that I'm stunned, but a round of applause for 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment!

And certainly a tip of the cap to whichever board member kept saying it would be one after another on the releases of Seasons 5, 6, and 7 since they already probably cued them up thinking they were going to first release a boxed set!

Two quick observations:
1) What an ADORABLE picture of Mary on the cover of Season 6!!!!

2) I could place all the "celebrities" they said made appearances on Season 6 except one...Dian Parkinson...somebody help me out, what was her role????

I'm not sure if you mean me specifically, but I did state that I thought we'd get the rest of the show pretty quickly since many were panicking that we might have a long wait for the remaining seasons. It just made sense to me that those seasons would already be raring to go. I didn't think it made business sense for FOX to let the product that is ready for sale just sit there. After all, the work had been done.

In any case, I'm thrilled it's coming out.

Yeah, Edster, I looked back and you were the one who floated that idea. It certainly seems to be happening that way. Good call!

Great idea, Catlover, on the hat toss!
And, also, our enduring thanks to Lance Corporal Baker on Veterans Day for his ultimate sacrifice.

She was a "Barker's Beauty" on The Price is Right at the time, from 1975 to 1993. She is also famous for being the first model to sue Bob Barker, for sexual harrassment in 1994. Her role was as Ted's assistant on The $50,000 Steeplechase.

OMG, Dian was my favorite Barker's Beauty as a kid, but I never put 2 + 2 together that she was Ted's assistant on $50,000 Steeplechase! I'm gonna have to check that ep out again!

I will buy the complete set if it's the only way I can get that blooper reel and any other extras they put in...otherwise I'm not sure.

This is fantastic news, though. There are some priceless eps in Season 6. And this will give me plenty of time to compile a top 5 for the inevitable: "What are your favorite Season 6 episodes" thread!!!!

I know I'm a bit later than usual in posting my reaction, but needless to say I'm THRILLED! :) Yes, Monika, a hat toss is in order. Let's have a party at Mary's....on second thought, let's not, hehe.

I would LOVE for there to be extras, esp. on this season, but I don't think anyone should hold their breath. Sorry, PGood. I hate to be a pessamist, but I think that's the reality. If I'm wrong, I'll glady eat my words, though!

I think we'll get Season 7 by the Spring as well if not early Summer. The seasons are ready and I've a hunch that FOX is plenty sick of the show. I think they're aiming to be rid of it as soon as possible.

Also, I think a complete set will come out soon thereafter, or at least in time for next Christmas. FOX knows people weren't objecting to a complete set. What people were objecting to was that it would be the ONLY way to get the remaining seasons. But a complete set AFTER season 7's release will definitely happen. It'll allow FOX to double dip and as much as they're sick of the show, no way would they pass up an opportunity to make more money (can't say that I blame 'em).

Seriously, I check tvshowsondvd.com every day but never expected to see an item about MTM so soon. I am thrilled! This is the shortest wait yet, and sends us fans a good message that we will get all the seasons!!!

Thats why I'm waiting for the Compete series set, hoping they'll be more extras. I don't like how seasons 5-7 are not uniform with seasons 2-4 and season 1 was close enough. I sure hope the final curtain call is included in the last episode.

Actually Kristen, I too am fairly sure there will be no extras on Season 6 or 7.

I was saying that I'll buy the complete boxed set if I know the blooper reel is on it, or the complete curtain call from the final show, or anything else I don't currently have.

Otherwise, maybe I WON'T buy the complete set, because even though I'm as anal-retentive as some people about some things, it really doesn't matter to me that the boxes/cases don't match on the individual seasons.

Kristen
11-13-2009, 04:58 PM
Oh, OK, now I see what you mean. Yeah, I've thought about a complete series, too. I would have to think long and hard about re-buying, and there would have to be some GOOD extras to make me do it. But I'll cross that bridge when I get to it!

Recieved my copy. Packaging is identical to that of season 5.
The runtimes look good, on the first disc every single episode are over 26 minutes each (about 26:10). Will verify as I go along.
Disc 2 does not have a single episode shorter than 25:59.
Disc 3 has the shortest ep listed at 25:57 :D So I'm willing to bet these are not missing any video footage.

Fox have taken their time with MTM releases but at least episodes haven't been cut to shreds,Shout Factory take note.

For receiving cheery things from the postal service toward the end of a New England winter, getting Season 6 of TMTMS is right up there with the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, an early tax refund check, or when they used to mail them, Red Sox tickets!

Congratulations. I myself got my copy at BJ's for only $19.99, which is a steal! My only reservation about the set is that the plastic seems awfully flimsy and while I was picking out my copy, I could tell that there were many on the shelves that had damaged packaging. You know how you can shake a DVD set and hear little plastic bits bouncing inside? At least mine wasn't damaged, but it took a little investigating to get it.

Now, bring on Season 7!!! :)

Mary Tyler Moore Show's sixth season was its best. Now it's on DVD

By Bruce Ward, The Ottawa Citizen February 8, 2010 4:05 AM

Lou Grant would be unhappy if a reporter buried the lede so here goes: This just in. Chuckles the Clown lives on, funny as ever, 35 years after his bizarre demise on The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

The episode "Chuckles Bites the Dust" is the centrepiece of the show's sixth season, now out on DVD. It was howlingly funny when it was first broadcast on Oct. 25, 1975 and remains so today.

Here's the setup, if you've forgotten: Chuckles is appointed grand marshal of the circus parade after Lou (Ed Asner) forbids anchor

Ted Baxter (Ted Knight) to do it. In the parade, Chuckles dresses in character as Peter Peanut. But a "rogue" elephant spots Chuckles and tries to "shell him," as Lou puts it. Chuckles dies of his injuries, a broken man.

It could have been much worse, reporter Murray Slaughter (Gavin McLeod) cracks: "You know how hard it is to stop after one peanut." What if Chuckles had dressed as Billy Banana, Murray goes on. "A gorilla would have peeled him to death."

Somewhere up there, Ted intones, "the choir of angels is sitting on whoopee cushions."

Mary Richards (Mary Tyler Moore), producer of the evening news show, is appalled by her co-workers' irreverence. She insists that they treat Chuckles' passing with respect and solemnity.

But it's Mary -- earnest, well-meaning Mary -- who loses her composure at the funeral.

She bites her lips, but can't stifle the snorts and giggles, the hoots of laughter, as the priest delivers the eulogy.

"Chuckles the Clown brought pleasure to millions," the priest begins.

"The characters he created will be remembered by children and adults alike: Peter Peanut, Mr. Fee-Fi-Fo, Billy Banana, and my particular favourite, Aunt Yoo Hoo. And not just for the laughter they provided -- there was always some deeper meaning to whatever Chuckles did. Remember Mr. Fee-Fi-Fo's little catchphrase?

"Remember how, when his arch rival Señor Kaboom hit him with a giant cucumber and knocked him down, Mr. Fee-Fi-Fo would always pick himself up, dust himself off, and say, 'I hurt my foo-foo?' Life's a lot like that.

"From time to time we all fall down and hurt our foo-foos. If only we could deal with it as simply and bravely and honestly as Mr. Fee-Fi-Fo. And what did Chuckles ask in return? Not much. In his own words, 'A little song, a little dance, a little seltzer down your pants.' "

When the priest tells a mortified Mary to stand up and let her laugher ring, as Chuckles would have wished, she starts sobbing inconsolably.

It's worth remembering how refreshingly different The Mary Tyler Moore Show was at the time. It was a rare situation comedy, in which the lead character was a woman with a career. Mary Richards had never been married. In her early 30s, she wasn't looking for a man to support her. She loved her job, and worked hard to get ahead -- like any man. The portrayal of women was changing on TV, from the dependent housewives of I Love Lucy to liberated singles like Mary.

The episode won an Emmy Award for writer David Lloyd, who died in November at 75. In an obituary, the New York Times cited the Chuckles' episode as a prime example of Lloyd's talent.

"The hilarity derived from Mary's discomfort (and Ms. Moore's boffo rendering of a woman in full squirm), but the power of the episode was Mr. Lloyd's exploration of how people deal with shock over a death, by deflecting it with humour or stifling it with sombreness," the Times wrote.

There is far more than Chuckles to enjoy in the three-disc set, which contains all 24 sixth season shows.

Lloyd's lovely comic touch as a writer is evident in The Happy Homemaker Takes Lou Home, in which the TV household-hint hostess Sue Ann Nivens (Betty White) cooks dinner for Lou in her apartment.

After fending off her advances on the couch, Lou tells the man-hungry Sue Ann that she has too much to offer to be chasing men.

"You're a terrific broad," he says. (Remember, this is 1975.) In fact you're a treasure, Lou goes on. "Treasure shouldn't do the hunting."

The season's opening episode, Edie Gets Married, finds Lou trying to hold it together as a guest at his ex-wife's wedding. Murray in Love presents an ethical dilemma for the very married Murray when he realizes he's fallen in love with Mary. Mary's Aunt introduces Eileen Heckart in the role of worldly journalist Flo Meredith, who spats with an envious Lou over her journalistic credentials.

In Ted's Wedding, John Ritter, later the star of Three's Company, is the minister (in tennis clothes) who performs the ceremony when the nitwit anchor Ted finally ties the knot with his long-suffering fiancée Georgette (Georgia Engel).

The Mary Tyler Moore Show ran for eight years, beginning in 1970. And although season six was its highwater mark, the ratings dwindled. The show placed 19th in 1975; a year later Happy Days with the Fonz was the No. 1 program on television.

My season 6 DVD arrived in the post from the US today!
I can't remember "Edie Gets Married" at all, from The UK Family Channel screenings in the 90s,(they also missed out "The Lars Affair")
Nice touching episode,to start the season, just watching Mary's New Apartment, like most fans prefer the first apartment.
Mary is also wearing a very unflattering wig in some episodes, shame as she's nice hair of her own.
Funny not to see Phyllis around, here's hoping season7 comes out quickly and maybe "Phyllis" after that.

Great article, Charles!! I can't wait to dive into the set!! As soon as I finish S4 of Golden Girls (which I only have 2 more episodes to go) - I will be watching Mary and the rest of the WJM gang!! :D
