View Full Version : My Poor Dad - First His Health, Now His Car!

My dad has been fighting a bug the past few days that has kept him sick in bed and home from work. He's been miserable. Then, about an hour ago, some woman in an Escalade, yammering on a cell phone, was not paying attention, and smashed into my dad's car (which was parked on the street). The bumper fell off, the back windows are all smashed and I'm not sure if it can even be salvaged. The police came, filed a report and took the woman away. At least she had the decency to come up to our door and ask if it was our car.

I didn't hear any of this because I'd just gotten out of the tub and was blow-drying my hair. Then my dad knocked on my door and told me to look outside. I heard the car alarm blaring, then I saw the damage. YIKES. My dad spent quite a bit of time on the phone with the insurance company and is now waiting for the tow truck.

Thank goodness, since it was the other driver's fault, we won't be stuck with the bill for repairs (or another car, if need be). I made sure to go outside and take pictures should we need them. Still, it's not exactly making my dad feel better. He had to come downstairs in his bathrobe and PJs when he heard the commotion!! :(

why is it that so many of those people driving Escalades think that they can just park wherever they want to - whether there's already another car there or not?

(hope yer dad's feeling better soon)

I don't think she was parking - she was yammering on the cell phone and not paying attention. I think she just veered off because her eyes weren't on the road. We live in a residential area where the speed limit is 25, and with the impact, she had to be going at least 10 miles above that. I'll have to post the pictures I took later on to show the damage.

Thank you also for your kind words about my dad - poor thing is still coughing like crazy. Now this - he doesn't deserve it. :(

OH Nuts!

Well, I never! I saw the status update about that on FB... I don't even. Why? Wow, that woman was WAY distracted. I wanna know what her vehicle looks like now.

I don't blame your dad one bit - I would be in a foul mood for over a week if I were him.

Sorry about this, Monika. I know how your dad feels- a lady ran a stop sign and creamed my car about a month and a half ago. Luckily her insurance paid and I got a newer car, but Im sure she was on a cell phone. Hope your dad feels better soon and pray that everything with the insurance company goes smoothly.

Yes, I remember when that happened - I'm glad it turned out well for you. My dad's car is over 13 years old - so we're unsure what we can get for it.

Her radiator is shot - there's a gigantic gash in by where her passenger side headlight used to be. But my dad's car definitely got the worst of it. I'm not even sure they can salvage it. Plus the tow truck still hasn't shown up.

Holy cow. I would keep calling the tow company or dialing a non-emergency line to explain to someone that it's been several hours now and nobody has come by to pick up a wrecked car, and that you guys are NOT okay with that.

Finally, my dad managed to drive down to the body shop himself and get a rental car. Which I don't think is fair, since my dad is still sick and feverish, but he got tired of waiting.

Actually, I don't think the brakes were all he got done - I think he had some other stuff that brought the total up to about a grand. Thanks again everyone for your support. I just had the pictures developed in case my parents need to take them to the insurance company or whatnot.

We just heard back from the body shop - it's toast. Hopefully this woman's insurance company will pay up - because the car was in very good shape even though it was 13 years old. SHE was the one messing around with a cell phone and not paying attention to the road.

By the way, she told the cop that she was only driving 20 mph - do you think anyone driving 20 mph would've done over $5200 worth of damage? She plowed it 15-20 feet from where it was originally parked!!

Based on the amount of damage and how far she moved your Dad's car she must have been going more than 20 mph. I agree with Bandito. 35 -40 mph is probably far more accurate.

Well after recently spending nearly $2,000 on my car and then having the transmission die on me (thank God my car is still under the warranty). I can somewhat relate to your father and what he is going through Monika. I hope that he makes a full physical recovery, and gets a new set of wheels as well.

Exactly right. We have enough bad stuff going on in our family. This woman wasn't even remorseful. The bad thing is that because the car is 13 years old, it's only worth about 2K on Kelly's Blue Book. Her insurance company won't pay for a brand new car for us. My dad just had a bunch of work done on this car not two weeks ago.

My dad picked up the police report and even though the cop told my dad he thought the woman was going more than 20 mph, that speed was written on the report!!   In my opinion, my parents shouldn't have to pay one red cent for a new car. This woman was speeding AND paying attention to her cell phone and not the road - so SHE should be held financially responsible. I'm not saying this to be mean - I'm just defending my folks. That car was bought with my mother's inheritance money from HER mother - so it has sentimental value, too.

OK, end of rant!

My dad just got back from urgent care - they had to give him a shot and X-rays. It's highly likely that he has viral pneumonia. What's worse is that my mom is now sick. Same symptoms and everything. Both have fevers of over 100. So far my brother and I are in the clear. For now, anyway. Now they have this car thing to deal with.

Monika, I was just looking over the photos of the damages to the car, and I feel awful for you, your Dad, and the entire family. I agree that the woman responsible should be responsible for all damages (including a new vehicle) since she was yapping away on her cell phone. Where I live (Connecticut) it is actually illegal to use cell phones while driving, yet I still see it all the time. It drives me crazy.

I will pray for your family to feel better as well.
