I personally am against it, though most people I know actually favor it. catlover79 10-28-2009, 11:09 PM Against!! JamesG 10-28-2009, 11:11 PM In short, for it. Darren J. 10-28-2009, 11:32 PM For those that are for it, please share your reasons. JamesG 10-28-2009, 11:45 PM Look, it's not called "the oldest profession" for nothing. Putting it simply it's going to be around for as long as mankind is around. It's about time the government realizes that it is never going to go away and that it should be legalized, regulated, and taxed. Why have it not benefit the government? It's regulation would mean mandatory health inspections, benefits for the workers and their protection, and mandatory condom use. I watch to see how Nevada is handling it and it seems like that they have no trouble. Marvo301 10-28-2009, 11:47 PM I'm against it. Marvo301 10-28-2009, 11:59 PM I believe that sexual intimacy is something that is meant to be shared by a couple in a loving relationship. It's not meant to be bought and sold. Janice 10-29-2009, 12:02 AM Let's keep the language clean. This is a PG-13 site. browneyes106 10-29-2009, 12:08 AM Look, it's not called "the oldest profession" for nothing. I watch to see how Nevada is handling it and it seems like that they have no trouble. Nevada has done a good job of handling legalized prostitution. I have relatives who live there and they have said there have been issues of prostitutes claiming that brothel owners are unfair to them by keeping them at the brothels almost 24/7. But other than that there are no others issues in Nevada with prostitution. I agree with you prostitution will never eliminated. Nighthawk76 10-29-2009, 12:13 AM I'm for it. Its not that I have any interest in if for myself, I don't, but for people who are interested in it, than that's really up to them. That's no different from other company bosses making their employees do over-time and taking advantage. That goes on in almost every business. Hollow 10-29-2009, 12:34 AM It'll be around regardless, I don't disagree. There's too many downsides: 1)Just because someone doesn't test positive for any STD's, it doesn't mean they're clean. 2)Pregnancy is still a risk, even with a condom. 5)It has the potential to ruin many marriages. (i don't see this post but i got it from james's quote) none of those things are unique to prostitution, they're about sex in general. if a consenting adult wants to pay money to risk diseases and pregnancy, that's not the government's nor the rest of society's business. besides, what's the difference besides doing it for free and doing it for a price? those risks are still equally there. regarding #3 (and 4), she has to already be predisposed to misbehavior in order to do that. a well-raised child wouldn't suddenly turn on their parents, throw their education in the trash and sell their bodies just because it's legal. that's a simply child-rearing issue, not a government issue. Even those that were raised properly will often experiment to at least some extent. That's one of the biggest problems I see. Many will experiment and it can have long-term consequences. Most men I know are for it, which didn't really surprise me. It just sickens me, I know why most women do it, because they have to or have some sort of problems of their own. Nighthawk76 10-29-2009, 02:57 AM I would also like to add, I don't persoanlly agree with women selling their bodies for money, but again the decision is their's, not mine, and that is another reason I voted for it. PlayOn 10-29-2009, 03:09 AM I'm against it. Mike, first off, love the avatar! Second off (back on track, lol), women do not make that decision out of love for prostitution, they make it out of either deep troubles within them selves, money or low self esteem. I knew a girl in high school who ran away from home to become a prostitute because she just wanted somebody to love her and some extra dough. When women hit rock bottom they realize there is always one thing that can sell that easy and convenient- their body. So as long as there's a society of men that will support and contribute to prostitution, women will keep selling themselves. If there's no more clients, there's no more prostitutes. sunshinefizzy 10-29-2009, 07:08 AM I say if you are smart and use protection, go for it. MickeyMac 10-29-2009, 12:08 PM I am sort of on both sides on this. Frankly I think it should be legal. If a woman wants to sell her body for sex, and if a man wants to pay a woman for sex, then thats between them. There are bigger crimes out there that need attention more than prostitution. I say not only legalize this, but legalize reefer too. Myself there is no way I would ever pay for sex, or want to be a part of this. Sex is so much better between two people who really care about each other. Prostitues are like strippers, acting (and badly), like they care about the person they are with. catlover79 10-29-2009, 12:26 PM This discussion made me think of one of my favorite Barney Miller eps. In its first season, Barney Miller had an episode entitled "The Courtesans", where the detectives keep busting a bunch of hookers. Lots of great lines. Wojo: If a guy's gotta pay for it, he don't deserve it! *************************************** Wojo: No lady sleeps with a man for money. What brings you up here, Mrs. Miller? Elizabeth Miller: I came to get a check from Barney. ************************ (booking a Puerto Rican hooker) Chano: Miss del Fuego. I came from a very small fishing village in Puerto Rico. Del Fuego: Me, too. Chano: I came here. I worked very hard. I learned to speak English. Del Fuego: Me, too. Chano: And today I am proud to serve the public and be known as one of New York's finest. Del Fuego: Me, too! **************** Wojo: (filling out arrest report) Address? Linda: 542 East 68th Street. Wojo: Hey, you must do pretty good, huh? That's a very rich neighborhood. Linda: I'm a very good dancer. Wojo: Dancer! Ha! Linda: Oh, nothing fancy. Just your average, every day hoofer. Wojo: Occupation? Hoofer. H-O-O-K-E-R. JamesG 10-29-2009, 02:32 PM You do realize that prositution is not only limited to women, right? Though it is in the minority there are male prostitues for women to go to and you also can't forget about homosexual activity; from my knowledge most male prostitutes are for the gays. OH Nuts! 10-29-2009, 03:42 PM Wll I don't like to say I'm for it because that might imply I think its some kind of great lifestyle. But I don't think it should be illegal. Liza 10-29-2009, 06:34 PM I'm neither for nor against. I wish it wasn't around, but kinda accept the fact that it is. I was friends with a girl who used to be a prostitute. She had been a teenage runaway and it was the only way she could make money. I don't think throwing her in jail would have helped her situation any. On the other hand, any guy that would take advantage of a girl that desperate should be put in jail.... I see both sides of it. Liza 10-29-2009, 06:38 PM Prostitues are like strippers, acting (and badly), like they care about the person they are with. Now that one I have to disagree with. There is a big difference between doing a dance for someone and having sex for money. I don't personally approve in either form, but I do see a difference. Strippers couldnt care less about the guys they dance for, and hookers dont care about the guys that pay them for sex. Strippers couldnt care less about the guys they dance for, and hookers dont care about the guys that pay them for sex. Well, I don't think they are supposed to. Do most service-provider businesses care about the people they do work for? There have been strippers (exotic dancers) who have been stalked by clients because the client thought there was a connection and then they stumbled onto the dancer making out with their real boyfriend. I have heard stories about this. People don't realize it's just "work". Doodyville10019 10-29-2009, 07:12 PM I appreciate that. You should know that words can sometimes slip or opinions can run hot (as in angry, people!) and emotional when discussing a topic such as this. I did not get to see the original post which was deleted, but the point is there's plenty of bad language running around in PG-13 movies too believe it or not. No one should have to curb their language just because some 13 year old kid might stumble onto any of our threads - frankly, it would not surprise me if that same 13 year old heard the same language at home or at school on a regular basis! LoveMrsG 10-29-2009, 10:23 PM Against!!!! whoever heard of.... a women selling her body like it's an object. THANK YOU!!! I for one cannot believe that there are people who actually think that it is okay and acceptable for a woman to sell her body to other people like her body is a sex object. It is sad and ABSOLUTELY wrong and any woman who would ever do such a thing is sickeningly lacking in true self-respect. Legalizing it is like encouraging it and saying that it is okay and acceptable in our society and it is absolutely, across-the-board NOT okay and acceptable. It is SICK. Women who are prostitutes are doing an utter disgrace to themselves because they are human beings who do not deserve to be sold, or their bodies sold, like objects. Just like if you hired a plumber, electrician, magician, storyteller, clown, etc. It's a combination of the basic American principles of freedom of expression along with free maket enterprise. That is why many western socities either allow it or look the other way and concentrate on more seriouis crimes. If your 17-18 year old daughter said "Mom, Dad; I want to be a prostitute". I'm pretty sure you're not going to be happy about it. It's not only a matter of legal/illegal. It doesn't gloss over prostitution or sugar coat it...it's very frank. Sounds like a great read! catlover79 11-03-2009, 04:45 PM You guys should totally read it - it is an INCREDIBLE story. Here are a couple of reviews from Amazon: In this splendid retelling of the biblical story of Hosea, bestselling author Francine Rivers pens a heartbreaking romance between a prostitute and the upright and kind farmer who marries her; the story also functions as a reminder of God's unconditional love for his people. Redeeming Love opens with the Gold Rush of 1850 and its rough-and-tumble atmosphere of greed and desire. Angel, who was sold into prostitution as a child, has learned to distrust all men, who see her only as a way to satisfy their lust. When the virtuous and spiritual-minded Michael Hosea is told by God to marry this "soiled dove," he obeys, despite his misgivings. As Angel learns to love him, she begins to hope again but is soon overwhelmed by fear and returns to her old life. Rivers shines in her ability to weave together spiritual themes and sexual tension in a well-told story, a talent that has propelled her into the spotlight as one of the most popular novelists in the genre of Christian fiction. This is one of her best. Rivers has rewritten a secular historical romance of the same name (Bantam, 1991) for the Christian market, and it is a splendid piece of work exploring both physical love and a love of God. Angel, a young, hardened prostitute sold into "the life" as a child, has no interest in God or religion. Then she meets Michael Hosea, a devout Christian who tells her it is his mission to save her. After being badly beaten, Angel decides to take Michael up on his offer of marriage. Eventually, she learns not only to love Michael but to love God as well. There is not one false note in this wonderful novel. The publisher's foreword rates the book "PG" for its adult themes and subplots of rape and incest. However, these are handled with great sensitivity and are very much a part of the story's development. Very highly recommended for most libraries. Which is why men seek out unattached sex a lot more than women do; and they are more willing to pay for it. Women, for the most part, want a relationship whereas men sometimes just want the sex with no attachment. Big3sCompanyFan 11-09-2009, 08:09 PM Males have a higher sex drive and are aroused much more easily than women are. Which is why men seek out unattached sex a lot more than women do; and they are more willing to pay for it. Women, for the most part, want a relationship whereas men sometimes just want the sex with no attachment. That's because men have a lot more TESTOSTERONE than women which is the sex hormone. Also that "prostitution" in the animal kingdom goes on with more than just birds. Some mammals do it too but it's with food and maybe shelther, no dodo money. :happyface Big3sCompanyFan 11-09-2009, 08:11 PM I'm pretty sure it's legal in Sweden, as well as Turkey. Turkey??!?? Turkey is an Islamic country so that would be shocking. In Islam sex outside of marriage is strictly forbidden but they can have up to 4 wives if they can take care of them. JamesG 11-09-2009, 08:14 PM I'm pretty sure it's legal in Sweden, as well as Turkey. In Turkey it's legal and regulated. However, Turkey is one of Europe's worst when it comes to human trafficking. For Sweden it is illegal to pay for sex but not the prostitute. The criminal charges are for the paying client and not the one offering sexual services. Big3sCompanyFan 11-09-2009, 08:17 PM In Turkey it's legal and regulated. I was almost positive I heard once on the news that prostitution was legal in Turkey. I also read that it's legal in New Zealand, France, Brazil, even Iran and Israel!! Marvo301 11-09-2009, 10:00 PM Do you know how they justify that in Turkey because that's strictly against Islam? Although Islam is the predominant religion in Turkey the country is officially a secular state. Another words there is no official religion in Turkey and therefore Islamic beliefs have no bearing on Turkey's laws. JamesG 11-09-2009, 10:02 PM Thanks for confirming that, James. I was almost positive I heard once on the news that prostitution was legal in Turkey. I also read that it's legal in New Zealand, France, Brazil, even Iran and Israel!! Iran is a no, it is illegal there. Regarding the rest New Zealand is the only one that allows brothels "organized prostitution" whereas the others do not allow that. I've got a relative who lived in the U.K. for a while and although it's technically against they law they allow it as long as it 2 people or less to an establishment so it's not a "house". Individual women can place ads in papers in the U.K. and the authorities generally look the other way so it's sort of legal in the U.K. JamesG 11-09-2009, 10:20 PM I've got a relative who lived in the U.K. for a while and although it's technically against they law they allow it as long as it 2 people or less to an establishment so it's not a "house". It's also for the most part not regulated. Family Ties Forever! 11-09-2009, 11:20 PM I'm afraid to give my opinion in this thread because it might be coped and pasted to Facebook. I don't need people on Facebook judging me based on my opinions. Furienna 11-10-2009, 07:02 AM JamesG is right about Swedish laws. It's perfectly legal to be a prostitute, but it's not legal to buy his or her services. I guess these laws have come about as many prostitutes are victims of sad circumstances, as someone already mentioned in this thread, and they don't want to punish them. I think all prostitution should be illegal though, as I don't see it as a good thing. Some of the prostitutes will of course need help, not punishment, but I don't see why that couldn't be arranged. And about Iran, prostitution is supposed to be illegal there, but people have found a way to get around those laws. A man can get married to a woman, have sex with her, and then divorce her after a short time, maybe even one single day. And as a man is allowed to have several (at least four) wives at the same time according to Islam, it wouldn't surprise me, if many of those men, maybe even most of them, have an "official" wife, but get married to other women for a short time just for some sex. You can't be that naive. You can make up any screen name on this site you want and you are totally ANONYMOUS. NO ONE will know who you are on facebook unless you gave it out here which is stupid! ;) Even so we live in a country of FREEDOM and FREE SPEECH so you have nothing to fear. If you have misgivings later then just tell the idiots on facebook that you changed your mind so go ahead and tell us wussy! P.S. I love Family Ties too!! I gotta get season 2 and eventually the entire series on DVD. Alex and Skippy were the funniest characters. Janice 11-10-2009, 11:24 PM You can't be that naive. They said they would look into it which I doubt they really will..... TheLittleFaerie 05-14-2021, 04:32 AM If 2 consenting adults want to exchange money for sex, I see no problem with it nor is it anyone's business. Oh, but it's okay for a woman to use my body to fix her sink, or replace the starter in her car? GentlemanJim 05-14-2021, 10:54 AM The way I look at it, men are going to have to pay for it one way or the other, so what's so bad about having the price agreed on up front? At least with a hooker they go home afterwards. ;) Dude111 05-14-2021, 12:35 PM Bodily autonomy. Bonniegirl 05-14-2021, 02:37 PM I think if it was legal it would be safer ! I think if men had to actually go to a brothel or a legitimate online " dating" service it would be safer for the girl and him. ;)"Back page "prostitution ads and street walking is so dangerous for these poor girls , so many of them get tortured and/or killed ! :( And also the men could end up being robbed by the prostitute! Also if it were legal maybe they would make it mandatory to get HIV and other STD tests! That would be good , I think porno actresses and actors are required to ! Where as when it's illegal you have no idea what you might catch from an encounter even using condoms, they aren't 100 percent safe !;) shotzette 05-14-2021, 07:30 PM For it, only because I believe what consenting adults do is their own business. That being said, I would be very concerned for a friend's physical and psychological well being if they were involved with it. I think we need to decriminalize prostitution and regulate and tax it. Sex workers would have some legal protection and it could also help end human trafficking. SitcomsHeydayfan 05-18-2021, 01:57 AM I believe that sexual intimacy is something that is meant to be shared by a couple in a loving relationship. It's not meant to be bought and sold. I agree. However maybe exceptions can be made for people with severe medical conditions like paralysis, mental impairment, or other diseases & are unable to get an attractive woman. Dennis Hof, the late owner of the Moonlite Bunny ranch, said he got some people with medical problems there. Customers might abuse them as well. GentlemanJim 05-19-2021, 01:02 PM But they're not sleeping with any random person like hookers do! I think that you are wrestling with the concept of "Hobbyist vs professional" and are just letting the involvement of sex distract you. How many plumbers feel the need to get emotionally attached to someone before embracing their sewer pipes? You've got some pretty intimate contact there, at least on one side of the bargain. How many kids grow up thinking "I'm really looking forward to a lifetime with someone else's s*** on my hands"? Yet people become plumbers every day because it pays better than flipping burgers.
