View Full Version : WHY ARE THE PATS.... bandito 10-18-2009, 06:56 PM Still trying to score???????????????????? there up 59-0 Wreckless 10-18-2009, 07:05 PM they have no f'ing class. bill belichick is trash. brady is trash. they all have no respect for the league. i hope somebody stomps their heads in. GARFIELDKOOL 10-18-2009, 07:37 PM In defense of the Pats, why not?! The defense isn't stopping them, so what are they suppose to do?! You have to make statements like that. I am no a Pats fan, but I do like and admire Tom Brady. bandito 10-18-2009, 07:55 PM Its no big deal, I'm not a fan of either team. i just found it odd they were still passing the ball instead of trying to run the clock out. TVFactFan 10-18-2009, 07:59 PM Its no big deal, I'm not a fan of either team. i just found it odd they were still passing the ball instead of trying to run the clock out. Yeah it's pointless, up 59-0 on a winless team and you are still trying to score. Chelsea 10-18-2009, 08:29 PM If you go for a field goal at that distance, it's pretty much an automatic three points. If you go for it on 4th down, and the other team stops you, that's that. It allows the defense to save face if they can pull out the stop. All Tennessee had to do was mount SOMETHING, on offense or defense. What I saw today - and I saw the whole game start to finish by virtue of being in the Nashville market - was one of the most anemic football performances of all time. Had Belichick been DELIBERATELY been trying to run up the score you wouldn't have seen the offensive AND defensive players get subbed out in the THIRD quarter. The problem wasn't the actions of New England, it's that Tennessee was today, and has been all season, THAT terrible. They're in a horse race with the Rams and Bucs as the worst team in the NFL bar none and right now they're my vote. At least the Rams had a close one against Jacksonville today. Hell, the score SHOULD have been 61-0 but the refs gave the Titans a save by not calling an obvious safety. Waterston_Fan 10-18-2009, 11:56 PM they are not as bad as the bucs I wonder if they even play the Bucs. EDIT: How about Washington? Janice 10-19-2009, 12:20 AM Belichick took Brady out in the beginning of the third quarter. The backup QB only scored 7 points after Brady left. What do you expect them to do, fall asleep, give the Titans points maybe? Is this Pop Warner or the NFL? They could have scored 90 points if they wanted to pile it on. The Pats set three records, in a snowstorm, no less. Still jealous haters. Janice 10-19-2009, 12:25 AM they have no f'ing class. bill belichick is trash. brady is trash. they all have no respect for the league. i hope somebody stomps their heads in. You want to talk no class, with that trash mouth of yours. Give me a break! Your team crapped their pants today, just like they did in the Superbowl, with McNabb puking his nervous guts out. I'll say it before you start in with your broken record. The Pats are nothing but ****** cheaters. Brady ***** sucks, Belichick ***** sucks, the Pats **** sucks. Give it a rest. Big C 10-19-2009, 12:34 AM Here are my thoughts: 1. No lead is safe. In the Chargers/Steelers game two weeks ago, Pittsburgh almost blew a 28-point lead in the fourth quarter. You can't sit on a lead and give the other team a chance to creep back in. 2. It's not New England's fault Tennessee can't play pass defense. In football, when the opponent has a weakness, you have to exploit it. The Titans are so terrible against the pass, I think anyone on this site could put up big numbers against them. 3. Bounceback. After what happened in Denver last week, New England needed to bounce back. There have been many instances where Team A loses to Team B in painful fashion, then bounces back to beat Team C. He told me to thank you for your insightful, fair and in-depth analysis of today's game. He said you watched the same game that he did. He told me to tell you that he couldn't have said it better himself, and great job. Big C 10-19-2009, 12:41 AM P.S. Two things that caught my eye in this game: 1. The weather. I love games played in the snow and unique weather. 2. The old-school New England uniforms. Wreckless 10-19-2009, 01:11 PM You want to talk no class, with that trash mouth of yours. Give me a break! How is that a foul mouth? It's a FACT. It's called Spygate. But somebody doesn't want to accept or understand that. That somebody being you. Yeah at least we got to the Superbowl without cheating. Matt Walsh, he admitted he taped the Rams before the Superbowl, in which they won, so it gives me reason to believe they did it vs. Philly and Carolina as well. They probably did it vs. the Giants and still couldn't muster up a perfect season. It's like Barry Bonds. He has 762 home runs, and is the home run king, but he cheated to the top. Same with New England. Not only are they cheaters, but they have no class on top of it. So what if Brady was taken out? He was taken out when it was 59-0. That doesn't mean anything. You take him out when it's 28/35-0, not when it's an ass whooping like that. Even if Tennessee did nothing to show up last night, New England could of ended it 24 points before they did. That's called- no class or respect for the league. Wreckless 10-19-2009, 01:13 PM P.S. Two things that caught my eye in this game: 1. The weather. I love games played in the snow and unique weather. So do I. I can't remember the last time Philly had a real game in the snow. I think it might of been this MNF game I'm thinking about, vs. Seattle . Where we celebrated Reggie White at halftime. If this is the game I'm thinking of, and the last game with snow in Philly, then that was the only good part of the game for us lol . You can ramble and blather on all you want, but the fact is that after they investigated, it was Roger Goodell who said that a piece of film had NO impact on any scores. It was Eric Mangini, who was told to stop filming the last time they played the Pats, so the little fink ran to security when the Pats played the Jets. Belichick was filming on the sidelines, while Mangini was up in the tall walkway, which was a lot worse. They all did it, but the Pats were made the scapegoats, due to Mangini's jealousy. How's that fool doing these days? Belichick's still got a winning team. I suppose they cheated their way to yesterday's THREE records too. Only haters like you don't give the Pats their due for their three, count 'em, three, Superbowls. It had no impact, and it's never mentioned. Only in your jealous world. Give it up. It's long over. Even some fair-minded New Yorkers here saw that back then. Chelsea 10-19-2009, 03:03 PM If the Patriots had been running up the score: You would have seen more field goals on 4th downs You wouldn't have seen the entire 1st teams on Off AND Def get pulled in the 3rd You would have seen him challenge an OBVIOUS safety that would have put NE past 60 You would have seen more sacks when NE was on defense You wouldn't have seen NE call time-killing run plays nearly the entire 4th quarter With HOW badly Tennessee played, New England could have scored 100 in the game if they really wanted to. That would have been running up the score. Tennessee's collapse from season to season really is that bad, and their offense and defense really are that anemic right now. Throw in a Patriots team that's talented, relatively healthy, disciplined...and not to mention used to the cold - and you get 59-0. As a first-hand witness to the 3.5 hour football clinic in Massachusetts yesterday, the Titans were simply outmatched on every level. /And FWIW, Janice, thanks to you and Lou on the compliment in the earlier post. Seth, it was 59-0 by then. That doesn't mean anything. It was 59-0 by the time everybody was pulled. It was 45-0 at half, AND BELICHICK brought Brady back in for the 3rd quarter??? Yeah they have no class. Wreckless 10-19-2009, 03:45 PM and going for FGs on 4th down, when they were going for it, trying to get Touchdowns, means they were trying to get 7, not 3. And by the 4th Quarter it didn't matter, it was 59-0 by then. What about the 3rd quarter when Brady comes back in at QB, when it was 45-0 at HALFTIME? Ridiculous. No excuses for their lack of respect. Their should be a rule in the NFL Rule book against that. Sportsmanship on the field. Nobody else did it, nobody else has been caught, but New England. Goodell is a fool. That's why he didn't punish them. He should of took away the 3 SB rings, suspended Belichick, and fined him, Robert Kraft, Mangini, and Matt Walsh for it. How are they scapegoats, when they got caught RED HANDED? They got caught red handed. People want to make excuses saying everybody else did it. No they didn't. One team did it. Plain and simple. Nobody is jealous. Many people dislike Boston sports teams, mainly for that, and getting away with murder, metaphorically speaking. Janice 10-19-2009, 04:30 PM Blah, blah, blah. Keep up venting your spleen about Boston sports. The haters hated them before the filming BS. You're the typical hater. JEALOUS. See ya! December 5, 2004 - Eagles/Packers at Philly - Eagles lead 44-3 after three quarters... McNabb was still out there in the 4th quarter, as was T.O. Brady was taken out after one series in the 3rd quarter of Sunday's game. McNabb threw 5 TDs that day, but he certainly didn't need to. Would you say that the Eagles showed no class against the Packers? The final was 47-17. Even when the Eagles were up 44-3 early in the 4th quarter, they went for a FG when they had the ball, 4th and goal from the Packer's 4 yard line... they could have run the ball, and if they don't score, the Pack is deep in their own territory. But they piled it on instead with a totally unnecessary field goal. And so what if the Patriots didn't finish the perfect season? The Eagles have yet to win a Super Bowl at all. It's not the Patriots fault that Tennessee elected not to show up. But Janice is right, this is the NFL. Just because the Eagles also didn't show up yesterday, no reason to take it out on the Pats because they did. How many championships do we have? That's essentially what a superbowl is, before you sugarcoat the word championship, and people turn it into this stupid discussion about who's got a superbowl and who hasn't. Yeah I pointed that out because the Patriots cheated to a 16-0 record, and won their first two playoff games, but still couldn't win it all that year . No it's not their fault Tennessee failed to show up, but it's their fault that they ran up the score, and that Belichick had Brady out in the start of the 3rd quarter to play, when the game was over, and a 45-3 game at that point. It has nothing to do with the Eagles losing. Yes I am upset that my team failed to show up vs. a dismal team yesterday, but Janice knows- I have felt like this before any NFL game this season. Yeah Tennessee has been absolutely horrible this season Chris. From almost winning on opening night vs. the defending champion Steelers, to 0-6. They just can't catch a break, or play well/good football on top of it. To think, they were 13-3 and had the best record in the NFL last year too. Shame. They just can't catch a break, or play well/good football on top of it. To think, they were 13-3 and had the best record in the NFL last year too. Shame. They lost their most important defensive player- Albert Haynesworth- and defensive coordinator Jim Schartz, now the coach of the Lions. Also, they have had injuries decimate their defense- stud cornerbacks Cortland Finnegan and Nick Harper have missed the last few games. Kerry Collins does not have the magic he had a year ago.' Also, they have zero offensive playmakers- Bo Scaffe is not exactly DeSean Jackson. Lendale White is not doing much on the ground (I dropped him from my fantasy team in favor of Ahmad Bradshaw), though Chris Johnson is doing well- he is far and away their lone bright spot. It's been my belief that at the pro level, there's nothing wrong with beating the other team's brains out, as long as you don't physically try to harm them by going outside the rules. Every team in the NFL that's been around for any period of time has been involved in blowouts, on both sides of the ball. If it's a kid's pee-wee league, that's one thing...but in the NFL, players should go all-out on every play. Besides, not going all out is a good way to get hurt. But one possibility no one's considering... maybe Belichick has Brady, Moss and Welker on his fantasy team as well as his real life team! But running up the score on purpose is so childish, and disrespectful. They are grown men. They need to act like it, and show sportsmanship. That includes not running up the score. It seems fun if your team is the one doing it, but if it happens to you- it would suck. It's like that old saying- treat others, the way you would like to be treated. Do you really want your brains beaten, by say- 30/40 points? No. So avoid it as much as possible. Of course you want to win, and win as much as possible, but running up the score shouldn't be tolerated. Zoneboy 10-19-2009, 09:58 PM They are grown men. They need to act like it. With all those F-bombs you throw out on a regular basis it might do you good to follow your own advice. Wreckless 10-19-2009, 10:32 PM With all those F-bombs you throw out on a regular basis it might do you good to follow your own advice. Tweety 10-19-2009, 10:48 PM ...It seems fun if your team is the one doing it, but if it happens to you- it would suck... True, but for me, when the Steelers blow out somebody, I always say "listen, you jerks, save some of those points for when you NEED them". And actually, if the Steelers are going to lose, I prefer them to get blown out. That way, you can just write it off and start fresh the next week. As a player, the ones that hurt the most are the close loses, because you (as a player) spend the next week thinking about all the things you could have done that might have changed the outcome. In a one-point loss, about 20 guys will think it's all their fault. I know that when Brady threw his 50 TD passes in 2007, fans of every other team in the country bitched and moaned about how the Patriots were running up the score and Brady was padding his stats just to get the record. What none of them realized was that, when Peyton Manning set the record with 49 TDs, it was HE who was running up the score in a few of those games: 2005 season: Week 10 - Colts 49 Houston 14 - Manning 5 TD passes Week 11 - Colts 41 Bears 10 - Manning 4 TD passes Week 12 - Colts 41 Lions 9 - Manning 6 TD passes When Marino set the old TD record of 48, he had: 5 TDs in a 35-17 win over the Redskins 4 TDs in a 44-24 win over the Patriots I didn't look at the rest of the game, but Miami scored a ton of points that year (1984). And they crushed my Steelers in the AFC title game 45-28 (Marino 4 TD passes). The other reason I think it's perfectly OK for NFL teams to try to win by as much as possible is that some tiebreakers come down to point scored or point differentials. How'd you like to lose a playoff spot in a tiebreaker because you backed off and took it easy on some team in week 5 when you could have scored another 7 points? If teams object to opponents running up the score, why do some teams on the losing end of a blowout use up all of their time outs near the end of the game to stop the clock, when they have no chance of winning? Why not just let the clock run out? If a team is ahead and can run out the clock without running a play (or can just have the QB kneel), they usually do just that if a win is already in the bag... and that includes the Patriots. Fans should take blowout wins and blowout losses for what they are. And besides, in the end, it IS only a game, remember! And I enjoyed every one of Brady's 50 TDs that year, because he was the QB on my fantasy team :) Wreckless 10-19-2009, 11:02 PM True, but for me, when the Steelers blow out somebody, I always say "listen, you jerks, save some of those points for when you NEED them". And I enjoyed every one of Brady's 50 TDs that year, because he was the QB on my fantasy team :) You make a lot of great points here. I agree with all of what you said here, but I still think Brady shouldn't of been out in the start of the 3rd quarter, with a 45-0 lead. And those two Marino examples you gave aren't that bad at all. Both examples are 3 point possession games. 45-0 is a 7 point possession, if you go by when Brady came back out for the start of the 3rd Quarter, and 59-0 is a 9 possession game. Mr. Television 10-19-2009, 11:26 PM You can ramble and blather on all you want, but the fact is that after they investigated, it was Roger Goodell who said that a piece of film had NO impact on any scores. I think a lot of that has to do with jealousy. When you win as much as the Patriots have , people just get jealous of them. As for the so called spygate....it was a setup and I've heard people who played and coached in the NFL comment on it before and most of them thought it was nothing big. Everybody has done it or tried to do it before. And that 16-0 record had nothing to do with that because the Pats were caught in week 1. As for running up the score, if the Patriots were really really trying to run it up they would have kept Brady in there the whole game. Before the game people were saying that the Patriots weren't playing like they used to. They needed to get into football shape. I was hoping they could have scored 70 points or more but they obviously weren't running up the score. Wreckless 10-20-2009, 12:41 AM As for running up the score, if the Patriots were really really trying to run it up they would have kept Brady in there the whole game. What does the whole game have to do with running up the score? What is the correlation their? Especially when it was 45-0 at halftime, 45-0 at HALFTIME, Sonny. and 59-0 after 3. brady was still in after a 45-0 lead. why? that's called running up the score. leaving your starting QB in, when the game is out of reach already, and your team has pretty much already won, and it's 45-0. Therefore, my case rests on that. Btw, this is Belichick we're talking about here. Mr. I'd Hate To Shake Your Hand, But I'd Love To Beat Your A$$, Bill Belichick. they obviously weren't running up the score. how? 59-0 is running up the score. you tell me 59-0 is a manageable comeback? I'd love to hear the answer to that, because it isn't. Running up the score is getting extra TDs, in this case, when the game is out of reach for the opponent. IMO The game was out of hand before halftime, when it was 28/31-0 Pats. They ran up the score. 59-0 is not even close to a manageable comeback. Tweety 10-20-2009, 08:49 AM As a coach, you should never really think a game is over at halftime, no matter what the score is. Yes, you're professionals, but so are the guys on the other side of the field. Which is why you should assume that they're (your opponent) not going to give up. While it's true that no team has ever come back from being down 45-0, I don't think too many coaches bench all of their starters by halftime. The mindset is "hey, if we scored 45 in the first half, there's no reason why the other team can't score 45 in the second half"...not that this has ever been done, but it's not uncommon for a game to be "out of reach" at half time and still have the winning coach keep his starters in for at least the first offensive series or two of the 2nd half. By that time, the 3rd quarter will be almost over, and THEN you can better assess whether the other team has a chance of getting back in the game. But 30 minutes is an E-T-E-R-N-I-T-Y in the NFL. Probably the only exception to this is if you have a key player who's nursing an injury, then yeah, you might sit him down by halftime with a lead like that. Remember the Patriots/Bills game on MNF a couple of weeks ago? How quickly did New England score those last two TDs? About a minute and 15 seconds apart. That's how quickly things can change in a game. A team scores, kicks off, and gets the ball back on a fumble (with GREAT field position). So what if it's 45-0? Within a minute, a 45 point lead can become a 30 point lead, with all the time in the world left. As far as having respect for an opponent, the NFL is nothing but trash talk, all the time. You can count on one hand the number of teams and players who let only their play on the field do their talking for them. There IS no respect of opponents in the NFL. And that attitude has trickled down to every level of football. Kids know that this is how you get noticed on TV and on Sportscenter. You play to win the game. I don't think the Pats were really trying to run up the score in this game. They were ahead 52-0 at HF. If they were really trying to run up the score, the starters would have stayed in through most of the second half. The way the Titans were playing, they probably could have scored 100 points on them The Titans weren't even trying. I watched some of that game and it was embarrasing. If the Titans are giving up, what are the Patriots supposed to do? Tweety 10-20-2009, 07:18 PM I just love it when people get OWNED. Thanks Tweety! Well, I've been around a little longer than wreck, and I'm very familiar with blowouts... I live in southwest Florida, and we get the Tampa Bay Bucs games on our FOX station. But seriously, I wasn't really trying to own anybody, I was just trying to insert another POV about blowouts. Scores like 59-0 are extremely unusual, but every now and then, they're going to happen. If the Patriots are involved, a lot of fans are going to get involved... if the Pats win such a game, they'll be trashed for running up the score... if they're on the losing end, fans will celebrate and say that Brady sucks... As far as the Patriots near-perfect season, I was among those non-Patriots fans how wanted them to complete the perfect season... I saw the Dolphins do it, and I'd like fans who weren't yet around to see a team do it at least once. Who knows when anyone will come close to that again? And I appreciate teams who know how to play the game, and I loved watching the Patriots that year! I even rooted for them to beat my Steelers, that's how much I wanted to see them do it...if they'd played the Steelers in week 2 instead of week 14, I'd root for the Steelers, but I did want to see the perfect season (again). One Steeler defender in particular trashed talked like crazy before that game, and the Patriots showed him a few things (particlally a fellow by the name of Randy Moss). Anthony Smith was the Steeler who just had to shoot his mouth off... Their week 17 win against the Giants was great. I thought it was fantastic that the Giants played their starters depsite the fact that the game meant nothing in the standings. And it was a great game. For the Super Bowl, the Giants played amazing defense, and everyone, of course, said Brady "choked"... but to me, he showed how great he is by leading that go-ahead TD drive and scored with less than 3 minutes left. No QB in the NFL could have taken the beating that Brady took all game long and still been left standing in the 4th quarter, let alone leading what should have been a game winning drive. It took several miracles for the Giants to come back on that last drive and win..but I salute the Giants for what they did. They came back and scored when they had to... again, it took several miracles... Asante Samuel lets a game-winning interception go right through his hands on the sideline... Eli NOT getting sacked on that one play.... and then of course, Tyree's catch against the great Rodney Harrison... just a great effort by the Giants, and they deserved to win.... but I would like all fans to be able to witness a perfect season... and no one else is going to do that any time soon, I don't think... (I'm a Steelers fan since before their first Super Bowl win... In fact, I won a nickel from my dad on the Immaculate Reception game, he let me take my Steelers, he took the Raiders) btw, Janice - wreck and I kind of patched things up in another thread, about the baseball playoffs...we had some fun with it last night (Monday) because the Phillies came back with 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th inning, and won 5-4 to take a 3-1 series lead over the Dodgers... anyway, we had some fun because I told wreck "see what happens when they (the Dodgers) didn't run up the score? The Dodgers left several men in scoring position, they should have driven those runs in, but they let up, and it cost them the game!" Of course baseball is different because there's no time element involved, but we had a good time with it... here's the link: the "fun" starts on page 5 (post #62) http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=254921&page=5 But as far as the NFL goes, I'm for any team scoring as many points as they can until their coach takes them out...and then the bench should try to score as much as they can as well. If a defense doesn't like what's happening out there, then make a play!! Tweety 10-20-2009, 07:46 PM I remember a playoff game in the 1990's where the Houston Oilers were ahead 35-3 at halftime over the Buffalo Bills and led by their backup QB Frank Reich, the Bills came back and won in OT. Big C 10-20-2009, 09:13 PM Exhibit A as to why no lead is safe and why you need to pad it: In 2007, the Titans were up 32-7 in the fourth quarter over the Houston Texans, but gave up 29 fourth-quarter points, and needed a field goal to escape with a 38-36 win.
