Scream IV Set with Neve Campbell Returning
by Erik Davis
Sep 24th 2009

Who knows what finally convinced Neve Campbell to return to the Scream franchise, but according to Variety (and Bob Weinstein), she'll join both Courteney Cox and David Arquette in a fourth installment set to begin production in April or May.

This fourth installment will be the first in a new trilogy, and The Weinstein Co. is in talks with Wes Craven to helm at least the first film. No word on whether Campbell and the Cox-Arquette duo will stay on past the first flick or be hacked up five minutes in (I'd vote for the latter).

The Weinstein Co. have been battling rumors of money trouble for awhile now, letting go of employees and delaying films due to lack of funds and manpower.

Now, though, Bob Weinstein says the company will be returning to some of the franchises that helped produce box office, and in addition to three new Scream films, they're bringing Robert Rodriguez back to write and direct Spy Kids IV in 3D, with production on that set to begin in March of 2010 (so much for Sin City 2 ...).

Also on the agenda for Weinstein is a third Halloween movie in 3D, as well as remakes of Hellraiser, Scanners (in 3D), Short Circuit and American Werewolf in London.

On whether Weinstein will be able to handle all these films without bankrupting the company or delaying release dates for years on end, Bob notes, " ... there is no question that financing is readily available to produce and market these films."

Guess we'll see about that ...

Kevin Williamson Talks Plot Details for Scream IV
Tuesday, November 3, 2009
By: MrDisgusting

Scream franchise writer Kevin Williamson has been extremely open when talking about Scream IV, the first in a new trilogy that the Weinsteins hope to bring Wes Craven back to.

"It's going good," Williamson told MTV. "I've gotta finish that baby."

He reveals some of the first story details in the video that can be viewed beyond the break.

"The fourth one is an ensemble...It'll take place right now, 10 years later, and it's going to take place in [Sidney Prescott's hometown of] Woodsboro. We'll have our three main characters, and we'll be introducing several more."

The three characters that will be returning are Sidney (Neve Campbell), Gale (Courteney Cox) and Dewey (David Arquette), Williamson confirmed, adding, "We'll also be introducing a little group, a little ensemble of new castmembers. That'll take us through the next three."

From Kevin Williamson, creator of the original "SCREAM" trilogy, the new film sees the return of cast members Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette, along with a group of new stars, who can hopefully stay alive long enough to figure out the new rules to this one-of-a-kind horror franchise."

No director is listed although Wes Craven is in talks.

Scream IV Writer Talks Sidney Prescott's Fate, Death Scenes and Comedy
Wednesday, November 11, 2009
By: MrDisgusting

The NY Post caught up with Scream IV writer Kevin Williamson to ask specifically about the fate of Sidney Prescott (played in the previous three films by Neve Campbell) in the forthcoming sequel from Dimension Films.

For those of you keeping track, Campbell had originally passed on the project and caused major turmoil for Williamson, who admitted on Twitter that he had big plans for her. Eventually Campbell came around, and now the fate of her character is in focus. Read on to see what he tells the Pop Watch section of the Times.

"The thing about 'Scream 4' is that there are a lot of twists and turns, so I can't promise anything," he told PopWrap about Sidney's role in the fourth film now that Neve will return. "There are a lot of moving pieces, so we'll see -- but if you're a 'Scream' fan, I think you're really going to like it."

The most interesting revelation is that Williamson has tapped into all sorts of horror subgenres for the forthcoming SCREAM IV.

"I've [included] manga comics, Asian ghost girl movies, there's some PG-13 horror movies in there, vampire movies, M. Night Shyamalan movies and torture porn movies, even though they've come and gone," he tells the site while also addressing the comedy in the film. "You have to be careful because 'Scary Movie' spoofed these films, so one of the things I'm excited about with 'Scream 4' is that, while we do lampoon and send up the genre, [we] make it incredibly scary. That's first and foremost."

SCREAM IV was a hot commodity at the AFM this past week. The new film sees the return of cast members Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette, along with a group of new stars, who can hopefully stay alive long enough to figure out the new rules to this one-of-a-kind horror franchise.

Courteney Cox Thinks Gale Weathers is Miserable in Scream IV
Monday, November 16, 2009
By: MrDisgusting

As if the actors ever know what's going on with the development of a script, Scream IV star Courteney Cox made a few predictions today about what she thinks is happening in the life of Gale Weathers, and her husband Dewey (David Arquette).

"They're probably back living in Woodsboro," Cox tells Yahoo. "I think that he's probably still deputy, and I've had a lot of kids. I don't know. I'm probably miserable, and then I'm sure a lot of murdering will happen."

Ontario-born actress Neve Campbell first found fame on Fox's Party of Five before perfecting her little "girl lost in horror, blood and gore act" in The Craft, playing a teen witch even though she was in her early 20s at the time.

Looking perennially younger than she actually is, Neve moved on to even greater fame amongst a new generation of slasher flick fans as Sidney Prescott in the Scream trilogy, the most successful psychological horror genre films of all time.

Thrillingly, the four are due to reunite for Scream 4 which is scheduled to start filming in the spring. Campbell has lived, almost secretly, in London for the last five years with her actor husband John Light, a Brit. Indeed: these days the 36 year-old actress is such a fully paid-up Anglophile, even Madonna and Gwyneth would be impressed. Maybe even shown up.

Do you ever feel drawn to horror films due to your legacy in them?

I’m very thankful for the Scream movies. They were fantastic for my career. Do I fear being pigeonholed for making this genre of movie? Not really. I’ve had a good ride, career-wise.

So you don’t think you are in any danger of becoming the next Jamie Lee Curtis of the shock-horror world?

Being the next Jamie would be fine! (laughs) In fact, we start shooting Scream 4 in mid-April.

I’m so happy that those of us still “alive” from 1, 2 and 3 like David (Arquette) and Courtney (Cox) have already signed up to take part.

Did you all stay in touch after the trilogy had wrapped?

Oh, yes. Completely. I haven’t spoken to them in a while. I’m sure it took a while to convince them to take part [in the picture], especially because they’re now a very happy family ,and of course, it was a long journey for them.

I think it’s going to be a lot of fun, and a lot like going back to summer camp.

What else can you tell us about Scream 4?

I’m pretty sure at this stage that Wes [Craven] is back on board to direct and Kevin [Willamson] is definitely writing it...so it is going to be great.

So you haven’t been sent a script yet, then?

No. Not yet. They had to wait for us all to sign on. I suppose that’s the way these days!

What’s the key to playing Sidney?

Physically speaking, it’s all about working the bob! And the only way I can achieve that properly every day on set is through Tara Smith hair products.

Seriously, if Tara didn’t cut and style my hair in an amazing girly way to re-create the Sidney look, I wouldn’t have a starting point [for the character]. I’m not kidding. Hers are the only products I can use without killing my hair and skin, as they are 100% organic and free of chemicals.

You sound like a big fan!

Honestly, your readers should try them and get the Sidney bob to hold for when the film comes out next year! Once I’ve got the hairstyle, the character of Sidney definitely comes back to me.

Work-wise, what’s next for you before shooting Scream in the Spring?

Well, I’m always trying to find a great new scam to avoid the dark, damp British winters if I can! So, I’ve just signed up to do a movie in Sydney, Australia starting in December.

The Arquettes Confirm Craven for Scream 4?
Source: MTV
January 18, 2010

Look, Scream 4 is going to happen. It's just a matter of when and if the Weinstein brothers can pull it together.

They're having a rough time, financially, but they may have the bread to kick off the promised "second trilogy" of Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson's franchise.

All the actors are falling into place. Until a script was turned in by Williamson, it was uncertain if Wes Craven was coming back, but at last night's Golden Globes ceremony, David Arquette said: "Yes, Wes is in, Neve is in, everyone is in."

Wife Courteney Cox adds, however, "I know they're trying to make that work. They'll make it work. I hope."

Which sounds to us like there are some roadblocks Scream 4 needs to hurdle before anything can happen.

More on Craven and Scream 4
Source: Ryan Rotten, Managing Editor
January 20, 2010

The back and forth, "is he or isn't he?" surrounding Wes Craven's involvement on Scream 4 continues.

On the KTLA morning show in Los Angeles, actor David Arquette - dressed like Pee Wee Herman (to tour friend Paul Reuben's live Pee Wee show) - told the anchors that Craven's deal to direct the next installment in the franchise is being worked out.

That's a change from "he's in" which Arquette told MTV at the Golden Globes.

But he did add that the sequel will shoot later this year. With Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Arquette and Kevin Williamson all involved, it's hard to believe Craven would walk away from this reunion.

I think we can all expect a confirmation soon...

Kevin Williamson Spills More on Scream IV
Friday, January 29, 2010
By: MrDisgusting

There have been so many rumors and so much speculation behind Dimension Films' highly anticipated Scream IV, which is supposed to go behind camera this coming April.

As of right now, Wes Craven should be directing (again) with Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courteney Cox all returning to solve another "Ghostface" mystery.

IESB caught up with screenwriter Kevin Williamson who not only confirms Craven's involvement, but also chats up some story details.

Read on for the skinny.

With all of the stars returning, Williamson's original version of the story will be hitting the big screen -- with no compromise.

"I'm almost done with the first draft of "Scream 4"," he tells IESB.net.

"I'm trying to get that together for Wes Craven. We've got to get going on that, during the hiatus. We have Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and Dave Arquette. I was always holding out hope because the pitch was about those three characters.

I didn't want to have to re-route the whole story. We don't have to do that. I can do it exactly the way I want wanted. The story is going to be told the way I originally conceived it."

He also chats about the strong mystery of who this Ghostface will be.

"Well, that's the whole point of the movie," he tells the site.

"What I have always liked about this movie versus the other horror films is that I feel like there are characters. In other horror movies, you remember Michael Meyers and you remember Jason.

In our film, I think you remember Sydney Prescott because Sydney Prescott's the victim and she has lasted for all three of these movies. The fun of the film is that it's Sydney Prescott. That's the difference and you care about her. I want to write a story where you actually care about our characters and it's a plot that you watch them walk through.

It's not all about the next kill. It's not all about slice and dice. I was watching "Saw VI" on pay per view the other night and I was like, "This is really just going from one kill to the next, to the next." It's fun, but I want to tell a story."

Williamson also confirms he's locked in for Scream 4 and 5 and that it is a planned trilogy. Let's see if this even goes before cameras first.

Wes Craven Still Not Signed on to Direct Scream IV! Can You Say WTF?!

Five days later... Wes Craven has responded (via Twitter) to an LA Times article that reported he would be getting behind the camera for Scream IV this coming May.

So wait a second, Dimension Films hasn't locked Craven down yet? WTF?

I've been snide about the situation since the get-go, but this adds a little more speculation to the Weinstein Conmpany's financial woes. It's time to open betting, will Scream IV even happen?!

Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courteney Cox have all been confirmed to return although Wes Craven has yet to be locked down to direct.

A May star date was scheduled, although I'd bet against it.

Interview: KEVIN WILLIAMSON ON THE NEXT SCREAM FILM

The writer/producer talks what's next in his bigscreen horror franchise

By ABBIE BERNSTEIN, Contributing Writer
Published 4/1/2010

Williamson is working away on the screenplay for the fourth SCREAM film.

“I’m trying to get that together for Wes [Craven, who directed the first trilogy and is set to direct this one also] to take a look at, and we’ve got to get going on that, because we’re shooting during hiatus.”

Additionally, Williamson confirms that original SCREAM leads have all signed on to return.

“To have Neve Campbell as Sydney back – well, I was always holding out hope, because the script is about Sydney, Gale [Courteney Cox] and Dewey [David Arquette].

The story for "SCREAM" Four, Five and Six – the launching pin of that was four, which is those three characters. But I found out originally when Campbell declined, I had to reroute it and that put all the onus on Gale and Dewey to carry the whole story, and that was me thinking fast on my toes, but luckily, we got her, I don’t have to do that, I can do it exactly the way I wanted and the story’s going to be told the way I originally conceived it.

I’ve been contracted to write four and five.”

Scream 4: Could Randy Be Back?
Source: CHUD
April 13, 2010

That's the question Devin Faraci at CHUD is asking.

Sources tell him Jamie Kennedy may be returning in some capacity to join returning cast members Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette for Scream 4.

But since Randy got sliced and diced in Scream 2, how will Kennedy's return be possible? Faraci has a few theories:

Will it be Randy, back from the grave?
Randy's twin?
Or will the film be going meta, as some have suspected, with Kennedy playing himself? (This has to be the least likely scenario - Wes Craven already did the meta movie thing with "New Nightmare").

With the script done, by Kevin Williamson, the latest sequel helmed by Wes Craven is currently location scouting in Michigan.
Filming begins this summer. Dimension hopes to have it in theaters on April 15, 2011.

Williamson: No Randy for Scream 4
Source: FearNET
April 26, 2010

Kevin Williamson is debunking rumors that Jamie Kennedy is reprising his role as Randy in the upcoming Scream 4.

"We're not that movie. We're not that universe where you can bring people back from the dead. That would be just a cheat. It's such a disservice. Everyone's like, "When's Randy coming back?" I'm like, "You know what? I would love nothing more than to have Jamie Kennedy in the film.

However to have Randy in the film, it sort of just takes it… I mean "Scream 2" was a lie, you know? It's a false move. So I just won't do it. I can't do that. I just won't do it."

He adds that while he's got a part 5 and 6 in mind, those sequels coming to fruition depend on part 4's performance at the box office (naturally). Furthermore, part 4 could stand alone as a film.

Williamson says, "4 is its own movie. It has a beginning, a middle and its own ending, which will be satisfying hopefully."

Friday the 13th Vet to Cameo in Scream IV?
Wednesday, April 28, 2010
By: MrDisgusting

We received quite an interesting tip while covering the premiere of A Nightmare on Elm Street. Apparently (and to be very clear, unconfirmed), Adrienne King has landed a cameo in Dimension Films' Scream IV.

This is a perfect homage to the slasher genre by director Wes Craven as King is best known for her role in the original Friday the 13th (and the sequel's opening) as Alice Hardy.

This isn't all that surprising either as King has returned to acting as she's booked roles in both Walking Distance and The Butterfly Room. We'll try and confirm tomorrow and get back to you with an update.

Update: The studio is unaware of the casting, but the cameo might just be a "Wes Craven" thing, as it was put to us.

Scre4m Teaser Poster, Wes Craven Speaks!
Wednesday, April 28, 2010
By: MrDisgusting

There's no better way of officially announcing a movie than releasing a sweet teaser poster. Below you'll find the official teaser for Dimension Film's Scre4m that features a huge look at "Ghostface".

You'll find some new details from Craven about the plot beyond the break.

On Sid (Neve Campbell) having issues with Ghostface....

"There have been 10 years of no Ghostface, but there has been the movie-within-a-movie Stab. We have fun with the idea of endless sequels, or “sequelitis” as Kevin calls it in the script.

Sid goes through these three horrendous things, and Stab was based on those horrible things. And then they’ve been taken by a studio and run into the ground in a series of sequels. She has been off by herself and living her own life, and she’s even written a book that has gotten a lot of critical acclaim. She’s kind of put her life back together in the course of these 10 years.

But, certainly, there would be no Scream without Ghostface, so she has to confront him again, but now as a woman who has really come out the darkness of her past."

On where the horror genre has been the last 10 years.

"It feels like the end of an era of a certain type of film. There are series of films, a lot of sequels, and a lot of remakes, and part of the humor of Scream 4 is when characters comment on that. “Enough of 'Saw 25' and all!” [laughs]

A lot of films, directors, and studios are the butts of some of the jokes. In order to figure out what’s happening around them, the characters have to figure out where the genre of horror is. So this is a look at horror after 10 years of a lot of sequels rather than original films coming up year after year. One film is successful, and then they make 25 of them.

I think it’s time for something new. I’ve done remakes of my own films, too, with The Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes, but we feel it’s time for something new and different, and that’s what this film is going to be."

It's a Scream 4 Casting Bonanza!
Friday, May 21, 2010
By: MrDisgusting

With a July start date looming for Scre4m, Dimension Films has made a slew of offers to fill the roles of the "new young teens" in the latest adventures of good ol' Ghostface.

Lake Bell is in negotiations to join the franchise, and offers are out to Twilight actress Ashley Greene, "Heroes" star Hayden Panettiere and Rory Culkin (Twelve) for key starring roles, reports Heat Vision.

If deals are concluded, Greene would play Campbell's cousin Jill, essentially the heroine of the movie, and Panettiere would play her best friend, a nerdy film geek. Culkin would play a potential love interest for Jill.

Bell is negotiating to play a police officer who knew Sidney (Campbell) from high school.

Casting is proceeding slowly because Craven and Dimension are not sending the script to agencies in order to protect its secrecy. With only character descriptions, actors are having a difficult time deciding whether certain roles are for them. Reps for the actors declined comment.

Craven, Williamson and Iya Labunka are producing the feature, which is slated for an April 15 release.

Original producer Cathy Konrad is not aboard the production and is suing the Weinsteins, alleging that she was cut out of Scream 4.

The film will shoot in incentive-rich Michigan.

The Latest Poster from Scream 4

Emma Roberts Confirmed for Scream 4
Source: Entertainment Weekly
May 27, 2010

When last week's update on the cast of Scream 4 came about, we reached out to our reps at the Weinstein Company who told us there were many rumors about the new cast members, but nothing was confirmed as of yet.

Today yields our first newcomer: Emma Roberts of Hotel for Dogs.

EW reports she will definitely be starring alongside Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Neve Campbell.

Roberts will play "Jill," Neve Campbell's cousin. The trades reported last week that Ashley Greene was in talks to fill that role. Guess that didn't happen.

Craven tells EW: "Emma's talent, beauty, and range will add immensely to the sophistication, intensity, and fun of the 'Scream' franchise as it returns to the screen once more."

Shooting begins at the end of next month in Michigan.

The whole thing is fabrication.

Our Dimension reps say this rumor is, "Not true!"

Slipped into an article at EW about Lauren Graham officially signing on board Scream 4 are two new additions to the cast.

If EW is right, then Anthony Anderson and Marielle Jaffe are also starring.

Strangely enough, Anderson's background includes Scary Movie 3 and Scary Movie 4, sequels to Scary Movie, itself a spoof of Scream.

Jaffe, however, is a relative newcomer to the biz having only appeared in Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and the upcoming Locked Up.

Lake Bell Drops Out of Scream 4
Source: Lake Bell
June 25, 2010

Just four days before the movie was going to start shooting in Ann Arbor, Michigan, actress Lake Bell has had to drop out of Wes Craven's upcoming Scream 4 due to scheduling conflicts.

Bell was going to play Deputy Judy Hicks, a police officer who knew Neve Campbell's Sidney from high school, a character described as "decidedly sexy but a bit off."

(Shouldn't be hard to find another actress who fits that bill in Hollywood.)

As Bell posted on her Twitter feed last night:

"Sucks: Scheduling conflicts with my current gig means I cant do #Scream4! (Hey horror bloggers, I know who the killer is...) #i'llnevertell"

With shooting set to begin on Monday, expect another name to be attached to the role very quickly.

First Look at Neve Campbell in Scream IV!

"Access Hollywood" host Nancy O'Dell somehow got permission to post a few behind-the-scenes pics from the set of Scream IV, one of which gives you a look at what Neve Campbell will look like in the movie.

Hopefully she's grown out of that PG-13 phase!

Dimension Films will release on April 15, 2011.

The Rotten Truth: The Facts in the Case of Neve Campbell's Hair & Scream 4
Source: Ryan Turek, Managing Editor
June 29, 2010

I can't wrap my mind around this one and I'll keep the rant brief...

This week, the first photo to find Neve Campbell on location in Ann Arbor, Michigan where she's shooting Scream 4 came by way of "Access Hollywood".

Mind you, to learn that the studio would even allow this photo to post on a Twitter account of all things is surprising. When most media outlets are invited to a set, photos are a no-no.

And this is usually the reason why...

Here, Nancy O'Dell is captured with Scream star Neve Campbell in the make-up trailer of all places. Not on a physical set. Not as her character. But Campbell getting ready for her day.

Pics like this and the reaction it received is the reason why studios frown on us press folk bringing still cameras to the set and why our reps love to have stuff "approved" by the talent all of the time before we can share it with you. But this is hardly the point of my rant.

I can't believe horror fans are bickering over what could possibly be Campbell's new look as Sidney Prescott in the Wes Craven-directed sequel.

Not just bickering, but being downright confrontational and juvenile about the matter as if their life depended on Sidney's appearance. One comment that struck me as rather dramatic was "*phew* crisis averted" when its writer realized the hair in the picture might be final. Crisis averted? When a school of fish avoids a cloud of oil floating in the Gulf of Mexico...that's a "crisis averted."

A questionable hair style on an actress heading into make-up on the set of sequel hardly has that level of gravity. Furthermore, since when did hair dictate the quality of the film? The script? The performance? Fan posturing has been taken to new heights.

So Much New Scream IV Casting it Called For a Fresh Story!

Heat Vision reports that:

Adam Brody (Jennifer's Body, The Ring) will play a cop who recently graduated from college that was raised on the “CSI” TV series.

Marley Shelton (Planet Terror, Sin City) will be replacing Lake Bell in the role of a deputy who knew Neve Campbell’s character in high school.

Erik Knudsen (Saw II, Beastly) will be the new Randy (Jamie Kennedy) of the movie, playing a character who is familiar with horror movie conventions and a provider of comic relief.

To preserve the identity of the killer, Craven and Williamson are operating under several layers of secrecy, including not sending the script to agencies.

At a table read last week, the actors were told to stop reading at page 75 to prevent even those already cast in the film from knowing the climax.

Exclusive Update: Kruger Returns to Scream Series
Source: Ryan Turek, Managing Editor
July 2, 2010

Zap2It is reporting that there is a new screenwriter tinkering around with Scream 4 - currently shooting in Michigan with Wes Craven at the helm.

According to them, the production has called back Ehren Kruger, the man who penned Scream 3, to work on the script. Furthermore, sources talking to Zap2It says that Hayden Panettiere's role has been "dumbed down significantly" and series creator Kevin Williamson is out of the picture, calling into question the fate of Scream 5.

Update 9:13am Pacific: Okay, here's what a source close to the production called to tell me this morning.

Yes, Ehren Kruger has been brought in to do a bit of polishing. But no, Williamson isn't "out" by any means. As you know, he's also working hard on the second season of "Vampire Diaries" for the CW. While he's away fulfilling his commitments on that show, the production called upon Kruger to assist on the script.

Some chatter about Lauren Graham's departure has made it sound like she wasn't thrilled with the sequel, however, it was another case of production scheduling and she's off to work on "Parenthood".

Adam Brody on the Ecstasy of Scream 4
The Movieline Interview || by S.T. VanAirsdale || 09 09 2010

So you’re playing a detective in Scream 4—

It’s a deputy, really. Deputy to now-Sheriff Dewey.

How did that go?

It was fun! It’s also a funny one where it’s all night shoots. It was cool and kind of surreal — not just to see Ghostface, but there was one night where Wes [Craven] was directing Ghostface in his mask. He’s like, “Ghostface, you’re over there…” It was just surreal: “God, I wish I had my camera.”

But to do the scenes not only in “Woodsboro,” or do them with Ghostface, but to do them with David Arquette, Courteney Cox and Neve Campbell was weird.

It’s cool, but it truly is a surreal experience, just because I remember walking into the movie theater when I was 16 and…

You were a Scream fan?

Yeah, absolutely. How could you not be? Totally enjoyed the movie.

There was a conversation recently about the levels of meta that Scream and other contemporary films draw from — that Scream 4 draws from Scream, and Scream itself called out the conventions of a whole genre — and how self-awareness just kind of trickles down.

And—

Well, this one’s like meta on meta on meta. Self-referencing on self-referencing.

But again, because the first one is about movies, and this one’s about movies and all the murders that have taken place onscreen over the years.

This one’s all about commenting on itself. And I like that. It’s part of the fun.

But that’s right: I think everything is more meta and self-referential now. I think people are more plugged-in, communication works faster, people are more educated about it — how it did or whatever.

Even Apatow — there’s nothing “meta” about it, but it references events. People are doing more of that in movies and pop culture in the moment.

I guess I probably should have posted something earlier - Scream 4 was shot in my hometown. Northville, Michigan baby!

One of my friends was getting a pedicure, she looked to her left and Courtney Cox was in the next chair. They filmed parts of the movie in my old neighborhood and in the next town over.

Some of my friends said it got annoying after awhile (they couldn't walk their dogs in the park cuz of the camera crews) but it's still pretty cool to have your tiny hometown featured in a movie like that.

And if you're curious, I used to live on Main Street, so it's a pretty safe bet that there will be a few shots of my old neighborhood in the movie. So now you can all see where Liza grew up

Exclusive: Will Scream 4 Relaunch the Franchise?
Source: Edward Douglas
October 27, 2010

Earlier today, ShockTillYouDrop.com had a chance to sit down with actor David Arquette to talk about his role in Terry Gilliam's short film "The Legend of Hallowdega," which will premiere on the Official Site on Sunday.

We know how many Scream fans there are out there, so we had to sneak in a couple of questions about the upcoming Scream 4, which is coming out on April 15, 2011.

"It's an exciting movie," Arquette told us during the interview.

"'Scream 4' I think is going to be the best of the sequels by far. It's got a really amazing beginning, and throughout it it's great and then the ending is pretty cool, too."

We asked the actor if it was a no-brainer to return to the series after ten years.

"For me it was," he responded.

"I love the character Dewey, I love working with Wes Craven. Being able to work with Courteney again is amazing and Neve. It was pretty much a no-brainer.

We've been working on these movies for 16 years, so you go back and we know the DP and the propmaster and the first AD and they're all buddies of ours. We all went through this whole experience together."

"There is definitely self-referential humor," he said in brief when asked how much of the last ten years of horror will be incorporated before telling us how his character has changed.

"I play Sheriff Riley, not Deputy Dewey anymore, but I still lack the respect from the people that I feel like I deserve, but it's a great way to find comedy through the quirks of a police officer with no real authority. Nobody takes him seriously and things still tend to go very wrong."

One question on many minds is whether Scream 4 might pave the way for more movies down the road, considering how many people love the series, and Arquette seems to think there's a good chance Scream 4 won't be the end.

"It definitely leaves it open," he told us, "So I would love to play the character again. I enjoy it, and I hope the people go out and enjoy it. I loved working with Wes and the whole family."

Britt Robertson on Scream 4
by Jean Bentley
posted Nov 30th 2010

Can you tell me anything about Scream 4?

Well I've actually been sworn to secrecy on the Scream 4 situation, but I will tell you I play a girl in Scream.

My scenes are with Aimee Teegarden from "Friday Night Lights". I actually had a scene with a couple of other people as well but I can't really reveal that.

What else can I say? It comes out in April, Wes Craven directed it and you should watch it.

Jamie Kennedy Changing His Tune About Scream 4
Source: Ask Men
December 6, 2010

Jamie Kennedy spoke to Ask Men recently, and the latter ultimately brought up Scream 4, curious to know whether Kennedy will return for a cameo, even though his character, Randy, has been dead since Scream 2.

The actor's answer? "I can't tell you that! You'll have to watch and find out!"

Not a yes. Not a no. That's a change of pace for Kennedy who, in the past, has often debunked the rumors that he was back.

Kevin Williamson has also debunked the "Randy rumors".

Now, Kennedy could just be trying to help get butts in theaters, or, there could be something here... Is Randy returning for another "video message"?

Want to Know Who Opens Scream 4 With a Stab?!
Tuesday, January 11, 2011
By: MrDisgusting

In Wes Craven's groundbreaking Scream, the movie opens with an infamous sequence where star Drew Barrymore is gutted an hung from a tree.

Rumor has it that Scream 4, opening in theaters April 15, will also carry an homage to that moment. Screen Junkies may have just stumbled onto who dons the role in an interview with star Lucy Hale.

Details - and potential spoilers - await you inside.

Screen Junkies writes:

Lucy Hale couldn’t say who she plays in Scream 4, but if you’ve seen any Scream movie, you can figure it out. They each open with a prologue featuring a major star getting a scary phone call (or going to the movies in Scream 2).

“It’s a small role, which I was very happy to play,” Hale said.

“I’m at the beginning of the movie. They literally made me sign stuff that I couldn’t say much about it but it’s very exciting. It was very exciting for me to be a part of it and meet Wes Craven who’s an absolute sweetheart.

I didn’t know what to expect but it was fun.”

Hale knows the importance of that opening scene though. The very first one was Drew Barrymore.

“I know,” Hale said.

“To be a part that has a cult following, to look back at Drew Barrymore’s opening scene and be like I’m a part of this. This is unreal. It’s really cool.”

Hale also explains that she was supposed to be more prominent in the movie.

“It was totally last minute. I got the call, and they were like, ‘They totally want you to be a part of this movie,’ and I was like, ‘Absolutely. I will do any part.’ I was actually originally supposed to do another part and would come back for Scream 5, but it didn’t work with the schedule. So I did a few scenes.”

From latest issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine:

Ten years after the last 'Scream' movie, director Wes Craven, screenwriter Kevin Williamson, and actors Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette are reuniting...

joined by a few potential young victims (Emma Roberts).

This time Campbell's Sydney goes back home only to encounter yet another brutal Ghostface killer and a new twisty plot that Craven vows is a doozy.

"Sid is under attack," says Craven. "She has a phobia. She has never come back to her hometown except for the funeral of her father. Now she's returning to a world that is sane again, and then of course immediately it is not!"

Emma Roberts on Being the New Female Badass in Scream 4
By Jenni Miller
Posted Jan 31st 2011

So you're like the new female badass in the Scream series...

It's an honor. I mean, I've been a Scream fan...

Also, I love Wes Craven, and I love Neve [Campbell], Courteney [Cox] and David [Arquette]. I thought they have been fabulous in every Scream movie, so to come in and kind of take on this new role --

I play Jill Roberts, coincidentally her last name's Roberts, Sidney Prescott's cousin, and it's just cool because if you had told me five years ago, "You're gonna be in 'Scream' in a couple years," I would be like, "Okay, whatever, I don't believe you." So it was just really surreal.

It's an interesting return for the horror genre, because it originated this sort of meta-horror trend --

Well, Scream has always kind of changed horror; it's always kind of taken a new spin on it, and this one, I think, is going to open the door for a lot of new different movies.

Not so much Scream but I think it's gonna really inspire people, because it's just insane. I wish I could say more, but it's utter insanity. I mean, when I was reading the script, my jaw was dropped the whole time.

Because it was...

Because every time you think that you've figured it out and that's the end, it's not.

So, you're helming the new generation of the Scream team.
Are there plans for more? You're kind of set up to be the final girl.

Who knows? I guess we'll see. I mean, that would be awesome.

Craven and Cast Old and New Discuss Scream 4
by Jeff Otto
March 24, 2011

It's been over a decade since the last incarnation of Ghostface retired his/her mask, cowl and sharp shiny blade, another crop of unsuspecting, rule-breaking corpses laid to waste in the latest killer's path.

Rumors of a Scream 4 have persisted almost ever since the 2000 release of Scream 3, but director Wes Craven and series creator/writer Kevin Williamson have remained mum on when and if the Scream franchise would continue on, though the possibility had never been dismissed.

Now, in 2011, 15 years since the groundbreaking first film shocked us with the classic opening murder of Drew Barrymoore (if that's a spoiler, where have you been?), the original cast has reunited for a fourth outing.

Scream 4, otherwise known as Scre4m, thrusts Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) and Sheriff Dewey Riley (David Arquette) into a whole new world where time has passed, scores of new technology have entered the picture and the kids of Woodsboro celebrate the heinous murders of the town's past and the successful movie-within-a-movie Stab series (there are seven now, the first three based on Gale Weathers' book about the Woodsboro murders) like a national holiday.

The new cast-members include Emma Roberts as Jill Roberts; Hayden Panettiere as Kirby Reed; Rory Culkin as Charlie and Anthony Anderson as Deputy Perkins.

Director Wes Craven and the cast, both old and new, joined press yesterday at the Mondrian Hotel in West Hollywood to discuss the sequel/reboot/rebirth of Scream.

The first and most obvious question for Craven is, after all this time and the endless rumors, what made now the right time for Scream 4?

Craven, always a thoughtful and intelligent interview, offered his thoughts:

"Bob Weinstein is kind of the godfather of 'Scream'. He'd originally told us after 'Scream 3' that there were not going to be any more for a long time. He didn't want it to feel like we were just knocking them out to make money. He and Kevin (Williamson) were talking and he felt it was time.

There was the feeling that this is the perfect time to turn around and look at the first decade of the 21st century; 9/11 sort of hovering over things and certainly the presence of the electronic media being brought down to the people to the point where everybody is online, everybody's on Facebook, people are tweeting people all over the world all of the time.

That's totally different. The way that fans follow and participate in movies and make their own movies is profoundly different. So it felt like this is time to make a 'Scream' that can reflect all of this newness."

When told that no one could ever take away Craven's title as "Master of Horror" Craven laughed and quickly responded with, "Oh yes they can. Did you read the reviews of my last film?"

Craven refers to the less-than-stellar response to last year's My Soul to Take, which he admits is something he definitely thinks about.

"As far as worrying what people think," says Craven, "yeah, you do a film like 'My Soul to Take' and people think it sucks, that hurts. We put a lot of work into it and it's a good film, but you go on.

The good feeling about doing this film was getting back with old friends and doing something that I thought was really good and doing something that was a little bit more recognizable to an audience. You know, saving my career." (Laughs)

Likewise, for the cast, Scream 4 was a chance to spend some time with old friends and get re-acquainted with their beloved Scream series alter-egos.

"For fifteen years now, we've been doing these characters," Campbell tells press.

"I watched the films again before we started just to get a sense of it. It was nice to see that they still hold up really well, but it wasn't hard to get back into the character. With Sidney, it's just imagining her circumstances."

Cox jokes a bit about her own on-screen journalist character while talking with a room full of journalists.

"She not like you nice people," Cox jokes.

"You know, she's pretty silly in some ways. She wants her own fame and always did. So, when ten years later the murders start happening, she just wants to get really involved so she can write her book and become all famous. She has kind of a one-track mind. I like that part, someone who's so selfish. It's fun."

For Arquette, who went behind the camera to direct a horror film of his own, 2006's The Tripper, since last stepping into the tan uniform and fumbling mannerisms of Dewey Riley, the appeal was in commenting on the fast-changing technologies combined with the fun of bringing the jolts of the Scream series to a new generation.

"It's really interesting the way we've done these for fifteen years and the sort of connection we've all made. This fourth film is sort of bringing to life the first one and having fun with it and there's been ten years in-between. There've been different horror films and technology changes. It's just really exciting.

I think, with the new cast coming to this, it was really interesting to see because they're kind of reflections of us when we first got there. And it just really sort of brings an electricity that I felt on the first film with this."

As for the new cast, Craven and crew added an interesting and diverse new crop of actors (along with a few surprises we can't reveal), a group of fresh and, in some cases, familiar faces that should keep audiences trying to figure out who the killer is this time on their toes.

"I was a huge fan of the franchise and Wes Craven," says Roberts.

"I thought the fact that he was coming back to direct this one meant that it was going to be good. I read the script and it was an interesting role and I'd never done a horror movie, so why not?"

"I was in the films that spoofed this franchise and now I'm in this franchise," says Anthony Anderson with a big grin.

"And seriously, to be the only person of color in a horror film, you might think you know what will be my demise in this, but it's a new decade and new rules, so I might make it past the end of the opening credits. You never know."

On the subject of rules, which have always been a central element of the fun, often participatory elements of the Scream series, the cast themselves were often playing as much catch-up as the audience.

"My character's not a virgin, so she might not apparently, what is it?" asks Panettiere.

"Virgins can die now," Culkin clarifies. "No one's safe."

"It's the reverse now," jokes Anderson. "If you're a trollop, you make it to the end."

"I think the very essence of the 'Scream' films is that we break the rules," says Craven.

"We establish or state what the rules and then we break them. In 'Scream 1', if you say, ‘I'll be right back,' you die. And then the person that says that is one of the killers. If you have sex you'll die and, you know, Neve's character has her first sexual encounter and she is one of the survivors actually. So we like to establish what the rules are, but really, they're cliches.

As soon as they're stated in the 'Scream' films, we almost always break them. It makes the audience not know what to expect next. They think they know what they're about to see and we say, ‘No you don't.'"

To keep the crucial element of surprise alive and well for Scream 4, Craven and crew had to take special measures to keep the plot under wraps.

"Keeping things secret was kind of spy work," says Craven.

"Everything from when we did our original casting. There were hundreds of young actors auditioning, so we couldn't have them read pages from the actual script.

We had them read from 'Scream 1', which was kind of bizarre. We had a lot of things like that, which were kind of annoying, but necessary."

"I have some sort of feeling that they lied to all of us," laughs Panettiere.

"We think that the killer is one person and it's not. Because how could they trust actors really? Come on. I would lie to us."

Unlike most horror franchises, the killer of the Scream series is always a surprise beneath the costume, depending on how closely you've been paying attention.

Culkin offered some thoughts on what keeps Ghostface so vital and frightening after four films.

"Because he's always a different person with different motives. You don't really know why they're doing this. It's also weird because the whole town sort of celebrates this massacre that only happened like ten years earlier. So everyone in town is sort of twisted. It's a pretty sick little town."

Stabbing Our Way Into a Second Scream 4 Press Conference
Tuesday, April 5, 2011
By: Chris Eggertsen

With anticipation building for the April 15th release of Dimension Films’ Scream 4 - the latest entry in the top-grossing slasher franchise after more than ten years of silence – B-D reporter Chris Eggertsen and a horde of other journalists crowded into a conference room at West Hollywood’s Mondrian Hotel this week to engage in a Q&A session with director Wes Craven, returning cast members Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox Arquette, and David Arquette, and new additions Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Rory Culkin, and Anthony Anderson, to discuss their involvement in the massively-hyped new sequel.

Topics covered included the reasons behind revisiting the franchise after such a long absence, updating the rules and conventions of the series for a modern audience, and how the ill-fated town of Woodsboro has changed in the decade-and-a-half since the original massacre.

With the addition of a horde of fresh-faced young cast members, who in many ways echo the crop of self-aware young high school students featured in the original Scream, one could be forgiven for experiencing a slight sense of déjà vu when watching Dimension’s upcoming Scream 4, the belated third sequel in the iconic postmodern slasher franchise that’s finally being unleashed on April 15th.

It was a sensation actually experienced by many of the original cast members as well, who recently gathered – along with their next-generation "doubles" and director Wes Craven – at Los Angeles’ Mondrian Hotel to discuss the heavily-anticipated new entry.

"I think with the new cast coming to this, it was really interesting to see because they were kind of reflections of us when we first got there," said Arquette, sitting with Craven and fellow returning cast members Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox Arquette.

"It just really is the same electricity that I felt on the first film."

For her part, Campbell related a self-aware moment that she shared with Cox Arquette during the initial read-through with their younger cast-mates prior to the start of production.

"Courtney and I looked at each other and we were like, ‘we could be their mothers!’" laughed the actress, looking just as radiant and beautiful as she did when we first laid eyes on her over a decade ago.

"Grandmother!" remarked Cox Arquette in response, leaving the group of reporters seated before her to begin calculating the math in their own heads.

Of course, since the release of Scream 3 at the turn of the new millenium (now guess who’s feeling old?), there has inevitably arisen an entire new crop of horror franchises and sub-genres, not to mention a host of changes in both the culture at large and the technologies we use to navigate it.

Craven, who at 71 years old keeps himself refreshingly up to date on how today’s young people both communicate and consume entertainment, spoke to the evolution of the culture since the last installment and how that factored into he and the Weinsteins’ decision to revisit the hugely successful franchise after so many years of being away.

"Bob Weinstein originally told us I think after ‘Scream 3’ that there were not gonna be anymore for a long time. They didn’t want it to feel like we were just knocking ‘em out to make money," said the soft-spoken Craven, as always exuding an aura of quiet grace and intelligence. "

But I think at the end of the decade, there was a feeling that this was a perfect time to turn around and look at the first decade of the 21st century. It was quite distinctive from others. 9/11…that’s sort of hovering over things. And certainly the presence of the electronic media being brought down to the people, to the level where everybody is online. Everybody’s on Facebook, people are tweeting people all over the world all the time. That’s totally different.

…I have a step-daughter who’s 20 years old, and she’s watching movies on her computer or her phone," he continued.

"So the whole business, as you well know, is changing dramatically. And the way the fans follow the movies, and participate in the movies, and make their own movies…it’s profoundly different."

Campbell, now in her fourth outing as perennial victim Sidney Prescott, got back into character not by looking forward so much as delving into the past, taking time to revisit the first three films again prior to the start of production.

"I had fun watching the films again before we started this, just to get a sense of it," she told us.

"It was really nice to see that they still hold up really well. But…it isn’t difficult to get into the character. With Sidney, it’s just like imagining her circumstances and doing it."

Cox Arquette found herself not only marveling at Craven’s predilection for staying connected to youth culture, but also at the way he’s been able to maintain a sense of what scares people after 40 years in the business.

"He’s an amazing filmmaker…he is the master of this" she said.

"And the way he directs Ghostface, it’s the most…the way he tilts his head, it’s so eerie! I don’t know, there’s something about Wes that’s just like a choreographer when it comes to Ghostface…he’s just a great director."

As for keeping the details of the new film a secret, Craven smartly recognized the need to balance preserving a sense of mystery with making fans of the franchise feel acknowledged and included in the process. To accomplish the latter goal, he maintained an active Twitter account during production.

"We did everything from have contests to win posters of the film…to having contests where people would identify photographs of weird bugs that we took off of the set…when we were shooting at night, and all these strange bugs were falling out of the sky," he said.

"We just sort of kept the fans aware that we were filming, and that we knew they were out there. I have to say, it was very intriguing to see how quickly people answered the tweets…it made me realize even in the process of filming how different this reality was from even emails, you know? Just much, much quicker, and worldwide."

He was also diplomatic in response to a question about the alleged sour grapes that arose between original screenwriter Kevin Williamson and the production after Scream 3 scribe Ehren Kruger was brought in for last-minute rewrites.

"I think we’re all pleased with the way the script turned out," he intoned.

"It was a result of Kevin’s original master script, and Ehren did a decent amount of work on specific scenes and areas...and I wrote sections of the film myself. But it very much is Kevin’s concept and characters and situations and overarching framework for the film."

Following this uber-short Q&A session with the original Scream crew, four new cast members – Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Rory Culkin, and Anthony Anderson – took their place on the panel to discuss joining the storied franchise after years of being exposed to the films as moviegoers.

"It’s an exciting thing to be a part of," remarked Panettiere, who in the film plays Kirby Reed, the best friend of Roberts’ character who is essentially an updated version of Rose McGowan’s "Tatum" from the first movie.

"It’s like a sequel, but at the same time a remake, but it’s a combination…it’s cleverly remembering where it comes from, the clichés, and really using them to our benefit and growing with the audience. Because as generations go on, they just get smarter and harder to scare, and all that stuff. So it’s a very cool movie, a fun thing to be a part of.

I mean, who wouldn’t want to be in a ‘Scream’ movie? I thought, I was sitting on set and I was going, ‘Aren’t I supposed to be watching this movie? I don’t think I’m supposed to be here.’ I would never have imagined myself on screen with Neve Campbell and screaming. It just doesn’t make sense."

Anderson, one of the loudest, most insatiable hams I’ve ever had the dubious pleasure of being confronted with, spoke to the surreal nature of being involved in Scream 4 (he plays the character of "Detective Anthony Perkins" – get it?) after having appeared in the third and fourth installments of the Scary Movie series.

"I’m a fan of the franchise. Actually, I was in another film that spoofed this franchise, and now I’m in this franchise. So that was that," he acknowledged, before later admitting he hasn’t actually seen the movie yet:

"I just found out who the killers were like 27 minutes ago, honestly. Because my script never had an ending to it. I don’t know if they didn’t trust me…the lines that I prepared the night before, when I got to set everything was different. That’s how I went to work.

I’m sure I wasn’t the only one like that, but honestly, since I haven’t seen the film and my script never had the ending part of it, I didn’t know who the killers were until literally before the last roundtable discussion."

Emma Roberts, who won the lead role of Sidney’s teenage cousin Jill after Ashley Greene reportedly turned it down, talked rather generally about what attracted her to the project – in a bit I’m only including because it was more or less the sole usable quote offered up the actress during the mercifully short 15-minute session.

"I was a huge fan of the franchise, I’m a huge fan of Wes Craven, and I thought that the fact that he was coming back to direct this one meant it was gonna be good, and yeah, I love the part," said Roberts.

"I read the script, and it was an interesting role, and I’ve never done a horror movie, so why not?"

At the far end of the panel from Roberts sat lost little Rory Culkin, who didn’t even attempt to compete with Anderson’s apparent personal mandate to dominate practically every second of the discussion.

It was only near the very end that he was finally able to get a word in edgewise – and only after Roberts cheerily implored Anderson to give his fellow cast member an opportunity to speak.

"He’s always a different person with different motives," intoned Culkin, in response to a question about what makes Ghostface so scary.

"You don’t really know why they’re doing this…it’s also weird because the whole town sort of celebrates this massacre that only happened like ten years earlier, so everyone in town is sort of twisted. It’s a pretty sick little town."

Therein lays one of the most interesting components of the new film, which heavily references the first installment in painting a picture of how the fictional town of Woodsboro has itself changed in the last ten years.

While it would’ve been disingenuous of the filmmakers 'not' to have referenced the ’96 original in crafting the latest installment, there’s also the obvious risk of making viewers pine for the good ol’ days if they end up feeling significantly let down by this new entry.

There’s no doubt the world has changed dramatically over the last decade, but thankfully some things – like the hypnotic allure of a good piece of filmmaking – don’t ever go out of style.

Williamson Finally Speaks Out on Scream 4
Source: Entertainment Weekly
April 7, 2011

And by "speaks out," we don't mean trivial little sound bites that equate to nothing.

Breaking away from his hectic schedule to speak to Entertainment Weekly - who have made Scream 4 their cover story this week - Williamson had this to say about his time on the production.

Here's an excerpt from the EW piece.

"Everyone was second-guessing everything, because everyone wanted it to be so perfect," Williamson recalls.

His arguments with Weinstein intensified over the months and ultimately came to a head. "Oh, I got in a big fight with Bob," says Williamson.

"We got into a massive fight creatively, and we hugged it out and then we moved on."

When he moved on, Ehren Kruger was brought in to do a bit of re-writing. Craven did some touch-ups as well.

Look for EW on stands tomorrow.

Shock Till You Drop attended the Hollywood premiere of Scream 4 last night. The screening was jam-packed with recognizable faces in the genre (Alex Aja, Tim Sullivan, Eli Roth, Mike Dougherty to name a few) as well as Scream franchise vets.

And yes, even Bob Weinstein from Dimension Films showed up to address the audience, touching on Scream's origins and the need to take a much-needed break after Scream 3.

Overall, a solid night and we've got a slew of photos from the red carpet to share with you.

Courteney Cox Dishes on Scream 4, Twitter and Whether Anything Scares Her
By Laura Prudom
Posted Apr 13th 2011

It's been 11 years since the last installment of Wes Craven's genre-redefining Scream franchise hit screens, and time has been kinder to some of its stars than others.

Though Neve Campbell has been out of the spotlight of late, the slasher series' other leading lady is enjoying the kind of career longevity that would put Gale Weathers to shame.

Back in 2000, when Scream 3 was released, Courteney Cox was already a household name, thanks to her memorable role as Monica Gellar-Bing in "Friends", but over a decade later she hasn't ventured far from her prime-time roots.

She currently stars in ABC's "Cougar Town", the Wednesday night comedy from "Scrubs" creator Bill Lawrence.

Moviefone sat down with Cox to discuss the "high school reunion" vibe of returning to the franchise that brought her big-screen recognition; the personal challenges of updating Scream 4 for a new generation; and why the best investment you can make this year could be an empty paint can.

Light spoilers ahead.

Eleven years is a long time to leave such memorable characters to their own devices, and things have changed considerably since the last time we visited Woodsboro.

As Scream 4 begins, beleaguered heroine Sidney Prescott (Campbell) is returning to her hometown on the last stop of her self-help book tour, where she reconnects with Sheriff Dewey (David Arquette) and Gale Weathers (Cox), who are now married.

Cox's character -- arguably the most assertive, active protagonist of the original trilogy -- now finds herself stuck in a rut, somewhere our formerly intrepid journalist has no interest in staying.

"She has writer's block," Cox explained.

"She was famous in her own right. She had her own entertainment program, she was a reporter, and now her life has gotten really dull. Nothing exciting is happening, there's no new 'Stab' movies because she writes the books for them ... and then, Sidney comes into town and starts the fire going. People start dying and she gets excited."

Some actors would balk at the prospect of playing a character with such tendencies, but Cox relishes the opportunity to emphasize Gale's campy aspects.

"I love it. She doesn't think that it's at all immoral to want to expose or be a part of the excitement of people dying," Cox admitted, laughing lightly.

"It's part of her job, and I like that kind of morbid sense in her. She's married to Dewey, and he's really earnest and not taken as seriously as he should be -- and neither is she. I think that there are these kind of silly characters that offset the tragedies that happen in this movie."

As someone who has traversed the roads of fame for a number of years, Cox found it easy to relate to Gale's feelings of uncertainty in terms of staying relevant in her chosen field.

"I mean, you always get scared ... You know, like, after 'Friends,' what was I going to do?" she reminisced.

"I did a series after that a few years later. I feel lucky. I always seem to do things that are not complete bombs -- 'Dirt' was on for a couple seasons, then I went with Bill Lawrence for 'Cougar Town,' so I knew that at least had a good shot ... But yeah, you're always scared that that'll be it."

Speaking of staying relevant, in an effort to connect with a whole new generation of horror fans, many of whom might be unfamiliar with the first three films, Scream 4 has taken advantage of the millennial mindset right from the outset -- from director Wes Craven's constant Twitter updates over the course of shooting, to screenwriter Kevin Williamson's inclusion of new media as an integral part of the plot, to the hiring of a number of pretty young things from the CW demographic:

Such as Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Adam Brody, Kristen Bell, Anna Paquin, Lucy Hale, Shenae Grimes, Aimee Teegarden and Brittany Robertson, the franchise has undoubtedly received an infusion of fresh blood.

For Cox and the older members of the cast, watching "the kids" on set was an eye-opening experience.

"I'm not a technology buff at all," the actress insisted wryly.

"I hear the kids talk about tweeting and such, but no, I haven't Facebooked or Twittered or anything. I will maybe one day, but for now I've got to raise Coco. I'm so glad that people are doing it because you can learn so much information and it's fun, but it would probably be too much pressure for me."

One thing that was all pleasure, no pressure, was reuniting with her Scream castmates, many of whom she hadn't seen for over a decade. Cox even went so far as to call the reunion her most memorable moment from filming.

"Just that first dinner that you have when you get on location and you're there with everybody," she reminisced fondly.

"You looked around and it's ... It wasn't just Wes and Neve and me and David, but it was the same crew, the same everybody. It was just so nice to be all back together, and to meet the new kids."

Who’s the missing SCREAM 4 victim?
Posted by Michael Gingold
Apr 13, 2011

It was an image that sparked on-line debate and speculation when it was released, leading fans to wonder which SCREAM 4 victim it depicted. And now, as it turns out…the scene isn’t even in the movie.

The still below was widely circulated on-line as it was officially released by the studio, and appeared in our magazine story on SCREAM 4 in Fango #302.

Yet a viewing of the movie at a recent screening reveals that this entire setpiece, featuring Sheriff Dewey (David Arquette) and his deputies Hoss (Adam Brody) and Hicks (Marley Shelton), has been deleted from the theatrical release version—further deepening the mystery of who the hanging body is.

We have a pretty good idea, but we don’t want to give away anything; perhaps we’ll find out in the inevitable unrated DVD/Blu-ray special-edition release a few months from now.

I just came back from seeing Scream 4 and I loved it.

To me it was more hilarious than scary... especially the death of Anthony Anderson
the whole theater was laughing during that scene.

If you love the Scream films then I think you would like it.

I was disappointed that I was wrong in figuring out who the killer was.

Alternate Opening, Ending and Other Scenes from Scream 4

It's well known that Dimension Films pushed Wes Craven back into the director's chair for additional photography for Scream 4, which heavily underperformed at the box office this past weekend ($20 million estimated weekend opening, when predicted much higher).

Website Scream Trilogy was kind enough to hold the spoilers until after release, but if you click on over to the site you'll find them detailing a few sequences trimmed/changed from the original cut .

I watched Scream again recently after I saw Scream 4 and it made more sense on how this seemed like a retooling.

I didn't realize it at the time but a scene in #4 was like a copy of when Ghostface "murders" Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) in a fake attack.

I had a Scream marathon on Saturday (watched the first 3 on DVD and then headed to the theater to see 4.) Overall, I thought it was okay. It was a little more gruesome than the others in my opinion, but the plot was okay. I figured out the killer before the end...but I like that!

At the theater I was at someone actually vomited right at the beginning.

It was the scene with Kristen Bell and Anna Paquin and she said something like, "I can't take this" and tried to get out of the theater and then went puke:

I found the gruesome factor in Scream 4 to be more or less the same as what's in the other films. My opinion on the goriest murders of the franchise are the very first two that started it all, with Drew Barrymore and her boyfriend whose guts spill out all over the floor.

In Scream 4 I liked it when the guy got shot in the balls.

Amazon's listing for Scream 4 says the sequel's VOD release is October 4, which likely means we'll be seeing the film street that day on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Anchor Bay Entertainment is handling the DVD/Blu/VOD distribution.

Craven has recorded a commentary with his cast and, in past interviews, he has teased that the disc will probably featured deleted scenes and more.

Stay tuned for an official announcement.

Scream 4 DVD Art and Why It Will Never Be Part the Trilogy Collection
Source: Ryan Turek, Managing Editor
July 4, 2011

The DVD/Blu-Ray art for Scream 4 has been unveiled (by DVDActive.com) and, as we reported earlier, it has been confirmed to street on October 4.

Not sure about special features yet. Those will be revealed soon, I'm sure.

Now, the question I'm seeing a lot is this:

Why isn't the fourth chapter being included in the Scream collection that's arriving on September 6.

It's all about DVD distribution rights. The rights to the original trilogy were owned by the new Miramax holders and not The Weinstein Company/Dimension Films.

Although there is an agreement between the companies to pump out sequels, distribution rights are being divided.

Miramax has a deal with Lionsgate Home Entertainment to distribute the first three Scream films. Meanwhile, The Weinstein Company struck up a partnership with Anchor Bay to distribution their titles.

Scream 4 and any sequel that follows will be put out on DVD/Blu by Anchor Bay.

Universal Studios Hollywood has just announced a new Scream-based ride as part of their "Halloween Horror Nights".

Dubbed "Terror Tram: Scream 4 Your Life", the experience will aim to replicate Scream 4's "movie-within-a-movie" theme, unleashing Ghostface on the studio backlot, introducing guests to the fictional Stab slasher film franchise and offering them a chance to take a peek at Stab 8, said to be “shooting on location on the backlot.”

Details from the official press release are as follows:

“Terror Tram: Scream 4 Your Life” casts guests as victims in this living horror film and elevates the “Halloween Horror Nights” experience to astounding new levels of blood-curdling realism.

To create the ultimate “Halloween Horror Nights” nightmare, Universal Studios Hollywood assembled a horror “dream team” of filmmakers and stars who are serving as creative consultants to Universal’s Creative Director, John Murdy.

Halloween Horror Nights” 2011 will bring unprecedented star power to an array of unrivaled, film production quality mazes uniquely themed to today’s most definitive horror properties and deliver the most compelling, spine-chilling, haunted attractions. All-new terror filled “scare zones,” original shows and the popular “Terror Tram: Scream 4 Your Life” will be among the “Halloween Horror Nights” offerings.

The theme park’s favorite thrill-ride attractions will also remain open for “Halloween Horror Nights,” one with a menacing twist. “Jurassic Park In the Dark” makes its seasonal debut, while guests can still enjoy favorites like “The Simpsons Ride” and “Revenge of the Mummy – The Ride.

Wes Craven Talks Scream 4 Blu-ray, Teens, Technology, Violence, and a Smidgen of Scream 5!
Wednesday, September 28, 2011
By: Evan Dickson

I saw Scream 4 in theaters when it came out and I had a chance to check out the Blu-ray. And actually I have to say I think it's the best one in the series aside from the original. I think it has a lot of interesting things to say.

Wow, thank you.

My pleasure. I want to start off mainly with the theme of the movie, you seem to be addressing this new generation not only in terms of technology but in terms of their moral compass.

In terms of fame, attention and getting things you don't necessarily deserve because that's what this generation kind of expects. Is that something that was kind of part of the project all along?

Was that the impetus to make this fourth one?

Well I think it's the core of the negative aspect of it, if you will. The criticism of the generation. Let's just say a portion of the generation, because I certainly don't think it's true of the entire generation, but I think it's kind of a warning shot across the bow in a way.

But that was part of the larger notion that the thing that has truly changed in the past 10 years that makes it totally different from the previous three films is the power and scope of the internet. Online, smart phones, the generation is in contact with each other through screens. I sometimes quip that it's the ‘bowed head generation' because everybody walks around with their head bowed as if they've been defeated, but they're all looking at their cell phones. So it's very much about that.

What has God wrought in a way? What has this tremendous amount of communication and contact only through screens, or principally through screens, done to people's minds? Or their social integrity and sense of reality? Or as you said, their moral compass.

Then it gets into, “everyone can make a movie”. One thing that was all said was going to liberate the next generation, this generation, is that everybody would be able to make a movie. Now we're seeing that a lot of it could be, you know, could be a lot better. And the reason is that literally anyone can do it so anyone can make themselves a star.

To our eyes. Most of us, obviously I'm older, so are the studio heads, so is Kevin Williamson but we all keep in touch with it. And of course we use the same devices but not nearly to the same extent. But it's that idea that there are fewer face-to-face important conversations anymore. It's just device conversations that are so prolific in their quantity that they can't have the same meaning or reality to them.

Not at all. As someone who's getting to the age where it's time to start thinking about having kids, this is more horrific, in a way, than the first one.

There are all of these studies that show protracted Twitter and Facebook use can increase sociopathic behavior. Kids sleep with their cell phones in their hands now so they don't miss important texts, which interrupts the portion of sleep that allows them to process the information from the day.

I thought it really effective in the way it handled that. So the seed of this was there when Kevin Williamson brought the initial script to you?

Yes. Very much. And you know Ehren Kruger came in at a certain point and did a lot of writing. He's also a very apt observer of the current generation. And I added things too. We all had a really fun time brainstorming. Bob Weinstein as well. Although Bob's kind of computer illiterate.

But the three of us were very aware of the young audience, we work with a lot of young people, and how different things are. You pick it up and it's just different this time. At the same time I'm always trying to remind myself that my mother would constantly tell me I was going to go blind from watching too much television. Sitting too close to the screen.

So there's always this phobia one has about a technology that's newer than your own. As opposed to my four-year old grandson walking around with his dad's cell phone playing ‘Angry Birds'. It's like “whoa”!

It's amazing that they can interface with that.

Yeah.

I also noticed in this movie that the brutality is also kind of an uptick from the third film. Was that sort of a conscious decision?

I noticed in a documentary Still Screaming that Scream 3 might have had some of the violence muted as a response to Columbine. Do you feel like the visceral nature of the kills in this one is sort of where you like to keep things or is it a response to the the third one?

Yeah, I think Scream 3 is the Columbine affected one of the series. The original script that Kevin had involved a high school student, the daughter of the principal, who was actually leading a band of kids that were killing students.

And we got the first draft and just moments after that we got the news of Columbine and just dropped it like a hot potato. It got to a point where it was a little, and we always try to keep it from being campy, but there was a lot of comedy in it. And it was a bit more light hearted.

And when we got to this one my feeling was, “I don't want to get soft”. We were competing in a sense with SAW and Hostel and films of that sort. The violence had kind of amped itself up. And I wanted to be scary as well as funny certainly and I felt that it was time to get a little bit more serious and less snickering up the sleeve.

I never intended to do that in 3, but there was a sense that 2 was a bit softer than the others. And that's one thing I don't think you can do in the genre is get soft. I just shot what I felt was happening. We also had a new special effects blood guy who was just gleeful about it so, especially the death of the girl in her bedroom...

Yeah. There's blood all over those walls.

We were shooting in a practical house, an actual house that was so small there was no room in there for anyone but the cameraman and the girl. So I was sitting in another room watching it on video and I did not pick up how bloody it was. And when I walked in the room I was astonished!

Give our schedule it was, “okay, that's our 'after' shot”. We weren't about to go someplace else or repaint the room and wait for days for the paint to dry. So we went with it and I felt like, “you know what? It's somebody getting killed. It could be that gory.

Well she puts up an athletic response to it. So it sells the blood everywhere.

Yeah.

And you filmed solely in Michigan, right?

Entirely, I think. Yes. The hospital scenes were around Detroit and the rest of the time we staged either out of Ann Arbor or up north.

So the fountain scene in the deleted scenes wasn't filmed in Santa Rosa?Because that's a pretty great match.

It was a great match. It's a town called Plymouth and it's one of the sweeter, nice looking towns around Ann Arbor. We shot in three separate small towns for Woodsboro. But all in Michigan.

I noticed while you were shooting that casting kind of seemed to be an ongoing process, even while you were shooting.

One day I'd hear Adam Brody was in it and the next Marley Shelton or Hayden Panettiere. Is that the way it felt on set?

Were you casting as you would push up to certain scenes or was that just a staggering of announcements?

Well, it was a large cast and frankly the writing process went well into shooting. Bob Weinstein was very, very strong with his liking or not liking scenes and so forth.

As a Weinstein is apt to be.

Yep! It's always an interesting collaboration. So sometimes scenes would flex so much that a character wouldn't be in them the next moment. But we also had the opening and Bob wanted to kind of showcase talent for that that we may not have been able to have for the whole picture because of their television schedules.

And that kind of went down the line for quite a long while. And it was quite a struggle to decide who was going to be the number one girl. Not in the opening scenes, but for the entire film.

For Jill?

Yeah, for Jill. And you know we needed someone who kind of looked like she could be very close in the family aspect with Neve Campbell. So we used that look and we needed someone with really really strong acting chops and somebody that no one would suspect. So that combination of things, and the fact that some people just don't want to do horror films, all came into play.

We had to sell her to Bob because he was concerned that she was so small, because she is kind of tiny, and no one could believe that she had the strength to do some of the things that Ghostface had to do if Ghostface was going to be her.

But when we actually scanned the script, there were very fewRobbie could handle the others?[/B]

Yeah. Sowe put in Freudian slips. And she had such a personal gravitas and was able to go from sweet girl to powerful.

It's a pretty remarkable change when that reveal happens and she goes into her screed. She really sells that entitlement and that anger and sociopathy.

And speaking of technology, we were already in Michigan and we cast her the final time on Skype. We sent a tape of that to Bob and that was the final step.

And was she always going to be the killer?

Yes, she was.

Real quick, we hear that [I]Scream 5 is looking for a writer. Do you have any kind of update on that?

Honestly, I don't. My wife [Iya Labunka], who produced the picture, and I are just taking the summer off and acting like there's only a world here where we are and nowhere else.

But I assume that Bob is looking for a writer. I think Kevin's television schedule has kept him from being able to be a writer all the way through the film, which is what I think Bob is looking for. I'm sure he is looking for someone.
