View Full Version : Would you support a law banning cell phones and texting while driving?

Simple question. I'm normally not for nanny state laws, but I think this one could save lives. People seem way too distracted while driving these days.

This question seems too easy....

ABSOLUTELY!!

One of the things that irks me the most while driving is somebody who is driving slower in front of me, or who is obviously not paying attention to their driving, then I see, oops, big surprise, they're busy yakking away on their cell, or they're too busy looking at it to look at the road in front of them!!

I have got 2 small stickers, one on the driver's window and one on the passenger window of my car. One reads "Hang Up and Drive" and the other one reads "You!! Get Off Your Damn Phone!!". You wouldn't believe all the compliments I get from those stickers!!:D

Its already against the law to do that in the UK.

Texting especially is extremely dangerous while driving. You have to take your eyes off the road to do it. Talking on the phone while driving is also distracting. Too many times have I had to swerve to avoid a car crossing the center line while they were on the phone. What is so important that you can't pull off the road or wait until you get to your destination before talking on the phone? I just don't get it!

Yes. People survived for years driving without having to talk or text something every damn second. It's ridiculous. Especially texting, you're not even looking at the road. It's so dangerous. Unfortunately, it's not like it'd be an easy law to uphold because people can hold their phones down low when they're texting so cops can't see. And speaking of cops, I see plenty of them on their phones, too.

I am in favor of banning texting and cell phone talk while driving. The conversation can wait.

It's sad that they even have to consider these kinds of laws. You would think that people would have a little more common sense.

In a heartbeat!! If I need to use the phone when I'm in the car, I generally just pull over.

Where I live...texting is illegal while driving and Brooklyn, Ohio has a law against using you cell phone while driving, period!

I agree. Too many people are dying. There have been pilots of planes and trains crashing and killing themselves and others. Turns out they were texting just before the crashes.

Since I've known at least two people (Frank being one of them) who almost killed themselves and others, as well as writing off two beautiful cars because of this I'm ALL for it.

WTF can't wait a few minutes anymore? Damned youngsters - how'd ya like to live in our times when we had to find phone booths while on the road. It didn't kill us - but this texting sure is.

Yes because if idiots want to do that, they need to pull over or not do it at all.

I know I don't want to die because someone was texting or using their phone and not paying attention to their driving.

There is not one single reason that anyone, anywhere, has to use a cell phone WHILE driving. As Monika said, you can (and should) always pull over. Doing anything else pretty much says you don't care a whit about endangering the lives of everyone on the road with you.

Just like drinking and driving.

Yeah, plenty of studies done that show it's just as dangerous.

I know, but it just seems like a very, very difficult law to enforce.

You're right about that. I have relatives up in NY and I know they still talk on cell phones when they drive. I've seen other people up there do it too.

Yes it should be against the law. I can't stand cell phones. People can't go 5 minutes without talking on one. I saw a woman taking her groceries out of a store once. Her hands were full and she still had the cellphone up by her ear. Her neck was holding it up. Craziest thing I've ever seen.

Not to mention the most tasteless - people talking on their cell phones while in public restroom stalls. puke:

We have a law like this in Washington, but you can only get fined for talking/texting on a cell phone if you are caught for some other infraction. Kind of defeats the purpose, really. I bet if they made it an infraction in itself, you'd see the numbers drop really fast.

I support it, it's the law here in California but, it isn't detering offenders. I see people on their cell phones a lot of the time.

There are reasons to talk on the phone, but only a few. One is if you're being followed. Another reason is if there's no place to pull over, and you're running out of gas or your car's in mechanical trouble. You have to call a road service like AAA, the police, a spouse or someone, etc. It can mean the difference between life and death. Still, unless there's a good reason, it's stupid and dangerous.

No argument there! Unfortunately, too many people seem to think that finding out what Tiffany is wearing to Friday's party is a life-or-death situation.

Yes, it is. I've never talked on the phone while driving, and don't ever intend to (unless it's an emergency). But while we're banning cell phone usage, what about people who eat while driving... just as dangerous in my opinion... and the idiot women who are trying to put their makeup on in the rearview mirror while merging on to the freeway:mad: . There are many dangerous things people do behind the wheel besides cell phone use. Even something like changing the radio station can be deadly.:(

I actually overheard a guy inviting friends to a picnic while in a restroom doing his business talking on a cellphone.

Usually when I hear somebody answer their phone in public, they always say "I'm at the post office or I'm at the grocery store", etc. It seems they always have to tell the other person what they're doing.

Can you imagine that conversation?

Guy's friend: Hey dude, what's up?

Guy: I'm on the hopper taking a crap. And you?

I got that term from the show Wings.

Antonio was sitting on the toliet, not "doing his business", but just sitting on it with the seat down, and Lowell says "Sorry Antonio, caught you on the hopper."

You have to see the scene to get the whole joke.

My favorite line from that scene was when Brian was telling Helen and Antonio how he spent an hour talking to a lawyer to find some way to help them escape their marriage. He has good news and bad news for them. His bad news was, "I spent an hour talking to a lawyer!"

They don't make sitcoms like they used to.

Amen to that!! I know we could be here all night talking about this!! I love Brian's line, too, but I love the whole Helen in the bathtub thing, and the way the guys are. It's like for a time they're oblivious to her.

Sorry to get off-topic!!:D
