I always wondered that for the longest. Was it a Roper thing, or did Norman Fell did that as an add-lib?

View Full Version : So why did Mr. Roper/Norman Fell mug the camera? GARFIELDKOOL 08-29-2009, 09:55 AM I always wondered that for the longest. Something they could have discussed in the Biography but instead talked about the same sh*T-lol GARFIELDKOOL 08-29-2009, 07:26 PM Something they could have discussed in the Biography but instead talked about the same sh*T-lol You mean the same sh*it that was discussed in the 1998 E! Hollywood True Story? Schmoopie 08-29-2009, 07:31 PM Those biography shows always seem to succeed in only talking about the "bad" things that happened. Kind of ruins a show/actor's reputation a little in the mind of those who loved it so much TVFactFan 08-29-2009, 07:37 PM You mean the same sh*it that was discussed in the 1998 E! Hollywood True Story? Pretty Much, the only thing new I noticed from watching it was the producers feeling Suzanne Somers was too old to be Chrissy and Fred Silverman was the one who wanted her on the show after seeing her on The Tonight Show *Pleasant Tomorrow* 08-29-2009, 10:02 PM http://www.imageurlhost.com/images/hsoz5klogtk8zre3gply.jpg http://www.imageurlhost.com/images/4xu1crj86d4wt8poesbh.jpg http://www.imageurlhost.com/images/sbwnp7yamxkofqvyztsj.jpg http://www.imageurlhost.com/images/55gpb3a575jh36pi7t8.jpg Mr. Television 08-29-2009, 10:24 PM http://www.imageurlhost.com/images/hsoz5klogtk8zre3gply.jpg http://www.imageurlhost.com/images/4xu1crj86d4wt8poesbh.jpg http://www.imageurlhost.com/images/sbwnp7yamxkofqvyztsj.jpg http://www.imageurlhost.com/images/55gpb3a575jh36pi7t8.jpg Great pictures Ashlee. I love it when he does that. Jude The Obscure 08-29-2009, 11:50 PM Pretty Much, the only thing new I noticed from watching it was the producers feeling Suzanne Somers was too old to be Chrissy and Fred Silverman was the one who wanted her on the show after seeing her on The Tonight Show Too old??? TVFactFan 08-29-2009, 11:52 PM Too old??? Yeah she was early 30's Mr. Television 08-29-2009, 11:53 PM Too old??? She didn't look that old to me. Jude The Obscure 08-30-2009, 12:01 AM Well, the producers were wrong :D *Pleasant Tomorrow* 08-30-2009, 01:57 AM Great pictures Ashlee. I love it when he does that. Thanks, me too lol. The caption for the second one is my favorite. I forget the exact quote, but it was something like: Helen: I can't stay here tonight, I can't stand the paint fumes. Stanley: So put cotton balls in your nose. Helen: I can't do that, I'll suffocate! *Stanley turns toward camera and smiles* GARFIELDKOOL 08-30-2009, 10:20 AM Which brings me to my next question. I made a thread about this in the past, so I wil ask again. Would the camera mug would have worked for Mr. Furley? TVFactFan 08-30-2009, 10:50 AM Which brings me to my next question. I made a thread about this in the past, so I wil ask again. Would the camera mug would have worked for Mr. Furley? No it wouldn't have worked because Furley was already too GOOFY. See Roper was a serious type of Guy and what made the Mug shot funny was seeing his SILLY SIDE. Furley was silly from the door so it wouldn' have been the same *Pleasant Tomorrow* 08-30-2009, 07:48 PM No it wouldn't have worked because Furley was already too GOOFY. The whole point of Roper doing that was that he really had no allies, and that moment when he mugged for the camera was him acknowledging to himself that he got a good jab in. And as an audience, even if some disapprove of him, we knew he was saying, that was pretty good, right? Marvo301 09-01-2009, 12:27 AM I agree. Stanley: So put cotton balls in your nose. Helen: I can't do that, I'll suffocate! *Stanley turns toward camera and smiles* The Ropers were like a prototype for Al and Peg Bundy from Married...with Children. You both had a sarcastic, grumpy husband who is no longer sexually interested in his wife and a redheaded, tacky dressed, horny housewife. JackJanetChrissy 07-18-2018, 09:59 AM To answer the original poster's question, mugging for the camera was Norman Fell's thing. He improvised it in Season 1 or 2 and the director/producers liked it so much they kept it. Latka Gravas 12-18-2020, 03:01 AM Norman Fell's facial expressions & mugging for the camera cracked me up. He didn't have to say anything - I laughed just looking at him - ha ha. |
