Doris Roberts' Marie Barone on Everybody Loves Raymond? Both were short, aggresive, guilt-tripping mothers. Ida was to the 70s what Marie was to the 90s-00s. Though I think Ida was more passive aggressive than Marie, who didn't even try to be subtle.

And Doris Roberts played the mother of 2 daughters on Angie. Theresa Falco was even more like Ida Morganstern! This would be a fun show to have on dvd!

Never saw Angie - I'd like to, though.

Now that you mention it, I do see the similarity. Although nobody does guilt like a Jewish mother. LOL. But Marie certainly wasn't bad at it either.

I can definitely see a similarity. I never considered the stature comparison, but it's certainly there! lol

Just as a sidenote, the comparison makes me realize there haven't been a lot of positive role models for mother-in-laws on network television. Both of these ladies were good people at heart, but not exactly conducive to peaceful marriages!

Except that Marie was Italian and Ida was Jewish, but I see what you mean.

Even though their nationalities were different, Marie and Ida were two similar smothering mothers.

Italian and Jewish aren't that far apart. I come from 1/2 Italian family, so I speak from some experience, hehe. ;)

I think when The Golden Girls was being conceived, they considered having Sophia (and Dorothy) be Jewish. And of course Nancy Walker played Sophia's sister on that.

She did? I must have missed that episode.
