View Full Version : Moviefone's Top 15 Most Ludicrous Direct-To-Video Sequels

Hollywood's clear lack of original ideas is a pestilence much bemoaned by movie buffs. We see sequel after remake after TV show-turned-movie after prequel after comic book adaptation after "reboot" after ... Hasbro toys and game boards?!

But unless you regularly scour the New Releases section of your local video store Blockbuster, you may not actually realize how severe The Sequel Pandemic -- as we'll call it -- has gotten.

For every sequel released theatrically, there are thrice that number released straight to DVD. Oftentimes they happen to really decent movies, movies that did nothing to deserve the embarrassing stigma of a horrendous, star-less straight-to-DVD sequel.

Warning: There were no special effects (or Photoshopping) involved in the making of this article. What you are about to see are ACTUAL DVD titles released into the world.

Road Trip: Beer Pong (2009)

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e10/JamesGrec/RoadTrip2.jpg

Come on. "DJ Qualls being available" is not reason enough to go here...

Cruel Intentions 3 (2004)

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e10/JamesGrec/CruelIntentions3.jpg

Yep, this means there was also, in fact, a Cruel Intentions 2.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation 2: Cousin Eddie's Island Adventure (2003)

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e10/JamesGrec/ChristmasVacation2.jpg

Half the size. Twice as annoying.

Into the Blue 2: The Reef (2005)

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e10/JamesGrec/IntoTheBlue.jpg

Legally Blondes (2009)

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e10/JamesGrec/LegallyBlonde.jpg

As if one bad sequel, a Broadway show and a reality TV show about the casting of that Broadway show weren't enough, there's this.

Road House 2: Last Call (2006)

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e10/JamesGrec/RoadHouse2.jpg

OK, this one we kind of want to see.

Dr Dolittle: Million Dollar Mutts (2009)

American Psycho 2 (2002)

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e10/JamesGrec/AmericanPsycho.jpg

UPDATE: We attempted to cap ourselves at 15, but this just-discovered, absurdly-real DVD sequel (starring Mila Kunis and William Shatner?!) is too hard to pass up.

When this first came out I was tempted to pick it up because I like Kunis. The video clerk said "Don't even bother." when I went to look at it so I never bothered with it.

I'm surprised S. Darko didn't make the list.

The only real direct-to-video sequels that I have bothered to see were the later sequels in the Hellraiser, Candyman, Phantasm, Wishmaster, and Leprechaun series.

Some of those were hit or miss. The best of the direct-to-video sequels to me would have to go to Hellraiser and Candyman.

One of my favorite direct-to-video franchises are the Puppet Master films. Some of the films in the series suck but for a direct-to-video independent series some of them are actually quite good.

I've heard of a few of those, but Save the Last Dance 2 would be the only one I'd be interested in seeing. I'm sure it's not as good as the original, but I love movies about dancing, so you never know.

There was also a Dirty Dancing 2; Havana Nights, which was actually pretty good. I've seen it twice, I believe. Patrick Swayze has a small part in it as a dance instructor.

I saw The Substitute part 2. I might've seen part 3, i don't remember. I liked part 2. Michael Michele's fine ass was in the 2nd one and she got beat up and killed by the asian guy who plays on Law And Order SVU. I felt bad for her during that scene because i don't like to see women getting beat up by men. Did ya'll know there are 2 sequels to Anaconda movie with Ice Cube and Jennifer Lopez? I never seen any of them but i know Morris Chestnut and Salli Richardson are in the 2nd one and David Hasselhoff is in the 3rd one. I have seen so many straight to video movies on the shelf with actors i've never seen before hahahahahahahahahahahaha. Where does Hollywood find these people? LOL. A lot of straight to video movies are terrible but some of them are good. There was also a sequel to Single White Female movie with one of the girls who used to be in Destiny's Child singing group. Her name is Farrah Franklin. I was thinking about checking it out because i liked the first one with Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh. There was also 2 sequels to Wild Things movie with Neve Campbell and Denise Richards and i've seen them and i liked them. The 2nd one had Leila Arcieri(this girl is so hot)and Isaiah Washington.

There have been some direct to DVD/VHS sequels I've enjoyed like the Tremors films.

Some of the worst straight to video sequels I have seen-

Return of the Boogeyman '94 Sequel to The Boogeyman '80, Boogeyman 2 was pretty bad also, but I think that got a theatrical release way back when.

Day of the Dead 2: Contagium

Creepshow III

House IV though technically it's House 3 since The Horror Show wasn't made as part of the franchise.

The Silent Night Deadly Night sequels were pretty bad, the later Howling sequels, the Children of the Corn sequels, Lake Placid 2, Alligator 2, The Beastmaster 3(part 2 was also bad, but that got out to the theaters), Sleepaway Camp 2 and 3, Prom Night 3 and 4, Pumkinhead sequels, The Hitcher II: I've Been Waiting , Warlock 3...

Countless others, including theatrical released, and made for TV ones like Stepfather III and The Birds 2....

I forgot to list that one. I did see it and I was totally let down by it, I was eagerly awaiting it because Felissa Rose and some of the other cast members were returning. And Robert Hiltzik writing and directing it. Obnoxious kid who I couldn't decide if we were supposed to like him or hate him. Yes he's being picked on, but he deserved it. And really it was quite obvious who the cop was from the beginning, who were they trying to kid?

Yeah, I didn't actually like that one too much either. I was eager to see it since some of the originals were returning but I thought it was a let down.

You're right about the cop.

Another note is that this was Isaac Hayes' last movie.

I'm sure you know about this but have you seen the footage from Sleepaway Camp IV: The Survivor?

The original fourth film was being made in the early 90s but production and filming stopped due to the company financing it going bankrupt.

Yeah 2 and 3 were pretty bad.
I have to say of the two that I like 2 a bit more as Teenage Wasteland was awful.

I agree with you. I didn't care at all for Teenage Wasteland the plot of having a camp for teens of different social classes to mingle was stupid.

Putting it simply:
Teenage Wasteland was a wasteland.

My brother-in-law had it on so I watched it for about 5 minutes. That was more than enough.

I was looking around and I didn't realize that Children of the Corn had so many direct-to-videos:

The first two were theatrical:
Children of the Corn (1984)
Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice (1993)

The rest were direct-to-video:
Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest (1995)
Children of the Corn IV: The Gathering (1996)
Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror (1998)
Children of the Corn 666: Isaac's Return (1999)
Children of the Corn: Revelation (2001)

I just saw an ad for the fifth Bring It On that just came out.
Only the first, with Kirsten Dunst, was theatrical.

I forgot about the Children of the Corn sequels too. Just the other some of those were on SyFy or Chiller. I can't remember which channel it was.

Yeah, I knew that Corn had sequels but I never bothered to see them all and see how many they had all together.

I also didn't realize how many famous people appeared in the series throughout the years:

- Nicholas Brendon
- Charlize Theron
- Nancy Lee Grahn
- Naomi Watts
- Karen Black
- Alexis Arquette
- Eva Mendes
- Greg Vaughan
- David Carradine

That was the fifth one; also with Alexis Arquette and David Carradine.

David Carradine was in a Children of the Corn movie? Once again, you learn something new every day.

It's odd looking back at Alexis when she was a man.

She is the one with the goatee.

She pretty much looks the same. I don't think she has much feminization plastic surgery on her face.

Yeah, the facial features are still pretty much the same. I still find it odd since we'll never see her look like that again.

I'll still never forget Alexis as the Boy George wannabe in The Wedding Singer.

House of the Dead II (2006); sequel to the 2003 Uwe Boll film House of the Dead.

It's pretty much a given that when the theatrical film is a stinker that the straight-to-dvd movie is going to be worse.

It also doesn't help that a character who was killed off in the first one comes back in the sequel with no explanation.

I found myself bored a few nights ago so I decided to browse YouTube's free movies to see what they had and they have The Substitute 2: School's Out there.

It's one of those so-bad-it's-good type of films. It's a typical low budget action flick from the late 90s.

I love how the school has a huge war going on inside with machine guns and gas explosions and then they are open the next day.

The asian guy who is the villain is B.D. Wong; most known as the priest from OZ.

I wasn't aware that Treat Williams did two more Substitute films after this. I may track them down.

I love those movies they are fun to watch sometimes. I have seen the other two sequels. One takes place at a college were Treat's character investigates a steroid ring that effects the school's football program. That movie was ok. I really didn't like the other sequel which takes place at a military school.

Yeah, they are definitely fun. Like the janitor who travels through the school's ventilation and has a weapons cache/bunker in the basement.

I read up on the two sequels; I might see them soon.
