Refresh my memory, what season was that from?

If it was from season 5 then that was when Dick York was having the most trouble with his back and missed several episodes.

Season 5

Ok then I suspect Dick York wasnt on this episode because of the reason I posted above. He missed several episodes during this season. Sadly of course he left the show after this.

I never knew Dick York had Trouble with his Back

Yes, Dick York seriously injured his back filming a movie in the late 50s. The injury got worse and worse as the years went by, so bad that he became addicted to painkillers. The last straw was when he had a seizure filming the episode "Daddy Does His Thing" in late 1968 and was rushed from the Bewitched set to a hospital. His body had given out, and he never would return to the show. Such a sad story, but Dick York never wanted pity and instead spent his remaining years and limited resources helping the homeless and hungry.

That was a pretty sad story and it's too bad he didn't get support from the studio. I seen him in an episode of Fantasy Island and he looked good.

He also played a villain in an episode of Simon & Simon.

I don't see how Dick York could have received any more support from the studio then he did, if not for that support he would not have been allowed to continue in the role of Darrin for 5 years.

After his collapse he was in a semi-coma & bed ridden state for over a year.
How could any more studio support have been of aid to him staying on the show, if that was what you were referring too.

If it was general support they did not owe him anything once he was off of the show as he was making close to $100,000 a year at that time.

At one point, DY even temporarily moved in with his mother so his kids wouldn't have to see him suffer from the withdrawal of the painkillers. You can read more about it in his posthumously published memoir, The Seesaw Girl & Me.

Yes i read all the Bewitched parts & that, he was simply never professionally functional again, by that point his back was no longer salvageable apparently, it makes one think of Herbie Pilato's comments about him being self destructive, seems as it were so. !

It is really sad as i have heard that he was told that surgery could resolve his back issues shortly after it happened but he refused to have it.......................what might have been :(

So after Dick Left who got Dick's Lines
Dick York was replaced by Dick Sargent who played the role of Darrin Stephens in the last three seasons.

Yes, according to that book he said that at that age, you feel you're young and invincible. He thought the problem would heal itself. Sadly, we know the rest of the story. :( How different things might have been had he undergone the surgery.

It really is a shame, i would have liked to have been able to see him finish the whole run if the surgery had fixed his back.

We forget at the time what a huge hit & popular show Bewitched was in the 1960's & it's place in the conciousness of the country & that Dick York was one of the two main leads even if the Press tended to focus on Liz & Aggie.

After Bewitched ended i wonder what type of show he might have got for himself to star in, as i would think at that point he would have been able to get a starring program for himself.

I have seen him in a lot of pre-Bewitched dramas, comedy's & such from the Twilight Zone to One Step Beyond, even westerns, what do you all think would have been his choice when the offers started to come in, what direction would his show been in?

I too so would've loved to see DY be with Bewitched right till the end. He still remained in touch with fellow cast members such as Bernard Fox and Erin Murphy until he passed on. It's hard to say where his acting career could've gone. He could do it all - comedy, drama, romance - and do them all WELL.
