Abby was my favorite. I thought Betty Buckley did a great job playing her and the range of emotions she had with that character was quite powerful. Especially the episode when her mom came and announced she was divorcing Abby's father. That was powerful and the performance was quite grabbing. I wept. Any episode featuring her were powerful. For a stage actress who never did TV she did well for herself. She did good to come into a show that was still grieving over the loss of the actress, referring to Diana Hyland, she replaced.

I have to agree with the comments about Betty Buckley. Abby wasn't always the most likeable character, but she was one of the most realistic. This was one of the few times where a show introduced a stepparent who wasn't embraced a replacement for the lost parent (unlike "The Brady Bunch", for example). Abby didn't really try to be a parent to Tom's children, with the possible exception of Nicholas, and instead tried to establish friendships with them.

I agree with TV Guy's comments about Abby not trying to be a substitute mom for the Bradford children because when she came along they were adults or teenagers with the exception of Nicholas. She did a great deal of parenting to Nicholas, i.e. when Nicholas wanted a BB gun and she would not let him have it at first, a teacher harrassing him by comparing him to his siblings and Abby going to the school to talk to the teacher and her explaining the transitions the family was going through when it seems as though he did not have anyone to come home to. The list goes on. It was definitely a good point that when Abby came along she was not initially embraced by mainly Elizabeth and Nicholas. She gave a powerful performance on the wedding episode. Many times I have seen that episode to this day it moves me to tears especially when Abby tries to explain her love to Tom to her mom. Kudos to the show by letting Betty Buckley display her singing talents on the episodes that the family took part of a telethon. Especially the episode when she sang So La during her first season on the show.

Nicholas, Nancy, and David were my faves. I itentified most with Nicholas being close in age and often wondered if Adam Rich had been working with a cast closer in age, maybe things wouldh have turned out better for him. I think the closest one in age was 8 or 9 years older. I also think someone should be sued for the damage done to that kid. Blame him all you want, how does a child walk around the set of ABC studios with a rum and coke in hand, smoking pot, and watching porn? Its not right and I think its child abuse.

My favorite Characters were Elizabeth and Susan...I had a big crush on both actresses...

I also liked Tommy...it reminded me of how my brother and father interacted.. They had a very troubled relationship. It was nice to see a TV family not always get along--everyday isn't happyness. It made the show more realistic IMHO..

WATCHING THIS SHOW FOR THE FIRST TIME, NICOLAS (I HAD A CRUSH ON HIM FOR THE LONGEST-GUESS CUZ WE WERE A YEAR APART!), ABBY, JOANIE, MARY AND JEREMY (LOVE RALPH, TOO!).

WHILE ME-TV RE-AIRED THE EPISODES IN CHICAGO STARTING LAST YEAR, I REALLY CAME TO APPRECIATE TOM BRADFORD.

IN FACT, THINKING UPON IT, I WOULD HAVE LOVE TO HAVE BEEN PART OF THIS FAMILY, WERE IT REAL, THROUGH EVERYTHING!

BY-THE-WAY, I HAVE TO TELL YOU THAT I WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO MEET BETTY BUCKLEY WHILE SHE WAS IN SKOKIE, IL YEARS BACK. SHE WAS MY FAVORITE ON EIGHT IS ENOUGH, AND I WAS THRILLED TO LEARN SHE WAS COMING IN CONCERT! IT WAS AWESOME-SHE SINGS BEAUTIFULLY! I PICKED UP HER ALBUM, AND WAS ABLE TO MEET HER AFTER HER CONCERT. SHE WAS VERY LOVELY, GRACIOUS AND SO VERY KIND! SHE WAS NOT FEELING WELL, YET SHE ALLOWED ME TO COME BACK STAGE. I GAVE HER SOME ROSES, AND WE TALKED FOR A FEW MINUTES ON THE COUCH. I TOLD HER WHAT A BIG FAN I WAS OF HER & EIGHT IS ENOUGH. SHE GAVE ME A PERSONALLY SIGNED PICTURE OF HERSELF. A FEW YEARS LATER, I RECEIVED ANOTHER ONE IN THE MAIL. I STILL HAVE THEM BOTH IN A SCRAPBOOK, ALONG WITH HER ALBUM, AND NOW I WAS ABLE TO BUY THE SAME CD (CONSIDERING I CANNOT PLAY THE LP)
(ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL) FROM E-BAY. IT DOES HAVE THE SONG SHE SANG ON THE SERIES, SO- LA BUT I HAVE OTHER FAVORITES, THAT STILL MAKE ME CRY WHEN I HEAR THEM (MEADOWLARK, FOR EXAMPLE).

IT'S HER HEART, HER PASSION, THAT MOVES YOU, AND WHAT MAKES HER A GREAT ACTRESS, ENTERTAINER, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, HUMAN BEING.

I ONLY WISH I COULD SEE HER IN CONCERT AGAIN!:)

FROM WHAT I CAN RECALL, SHE HAS A FAMILY AND RUNS HER OWN DANCE STUDIO.

Check out the dance schedule. She is at the Jimmy Defore Dance Center in Costa Mesa, CA. Scroll down near the bottom and look at one of the instructors for Teen Classes (ages 11-16). There she is: "C Needham". It's also interesting that there is an instructor named "M Van Patten". Any relation to Dick?

Joan Bradford, by far! I'm biased of course since I'm a big Diana Hyland fan, but there was just something missing after she died. Diana just seemed like a sweetheart who left this world way too soon.

I wonder how long the show would have lasted had she lived?

I have said the same thing. Dianne Kay said that the entire cast and crew grieved like real family. Everyone loved Diana and hated Buckley

When I watched the show as a kid, I liked Susan and Joanie because they were the best looking. Now seeing the episodes after the DVDs finally got released, I like more the fact Susan and Joanie were the most fully written characters (outside of the parents of course); the other girls seem a little too one dimensional at times.

Which of the cast members was your favorite?
It was a great ensemble, that worked really nicely as a whole unit, so it's hard to pinpoint one character. For, me, for the kids, I always looked forward to seeing Nancy because she looked so good, and always seemed kind of confused. For the parents, I thought Abby because of her circumstances and challenges as a step-parent. Also, as an actress, I thought Betty Buckley was the most talented of them all.

I have to agree. When I purchased my DVDs of Eight is Enough, the first episodes I watched were the Abby-heavy ones. I loved when Abby thought she was pregnant and the episode where she remembers her first husband Frank. Even as a young kid, I knew Betty Buckley was uber-talented. What a treasure to finally have all these episodes on DVD now.

After Abby, my favorite characters were Tommy and then Nicholas. Age wise, I was right in between them and could relate to them the most.
