View Full Version : Questions that you dread people asking you??
Brad Russ 07-07-2009, 11:57 AM For me there's only one question I always dread answering a person who I've just met. That question is, what do you do for a living?? When you meet a person, that's always one of the first things they ask, which is part of the reason why I dread meeting new people. Having to tell them that I'm on disability is the most embarrassing thing in the world. I can see it not being embarrassing for someone who's in their 50's or over, but for someone who's 27, it's quite humiliating. I mean I know it's not my fault that I am the way I am, but the ackward silence, or surprised look that you often get upon telling someone, makes you just want to sink to the floor. I know I shouldn't care what people think, but I do, and this is a touchy subject for me. That's why I'm glad you all know. I don't have to explain it to anyone. Anyway, so that's what I hate getting asked. What do you hate, or dislike being asked by someone?
TripperFan 07-07-2009, 12:05 PM I've been that way the past couple of years because of my horrible employment (or lack of) situations.
Brad, the next time someone asks, just tell them "You work for the government". In a sense you do, you ARE being paid by them so to me, it's not really a lie. ;)
Chocoholic 07-07-2009, 12:10 PM I dread being asked about my lovelife, or lack thereof. I'm 28 and still single, with no prospects in sight.
On the flip side, I love being asked if I have children. I smile and say, "Yes, about 2 dozen of them." :D People's responses are priceless.

 That's great, I'll definitely have to give that a try. lol! Reason I brought this subject up is because I was asked this dreaded question during a facebook chat this morning. If they press me any further after I tell them that I work for the government, I'll just say I'm not at liberty to discuss that. I love that answer Cathie, thanks!! ;)
For the past five years, I've been living with Rheumatoid Arthritis. I am in pain all the time, and if anyone watches me walk, they should be able to tell I'm disabled. My knees don't straighten, and I slouch really, really bad. Sometimes I have to use a wheelchair, like when I'm in airports, museums or a "walking" city like San Francisco.
So you can imagine I get a lot of "What's the matter"-type questions. Which is fine; I'm used to it.
But when I tell them I have RA, I dread the additional question, "Aren't you a bit young for arthritis?"

I'm so sorry to hear that you're in such pain Brad, I really am. :( My mom has bad rheumatoid arthritis, and it's painful just watching her get out of bed most mornings. Her toes are curling up, and I see her deteriorating right before my eyes. I really sympathize with you my friend, and I just wish there were a cure for diseases like this. Know though that you will be in my prayers. I wish you the very best!! :)

OMG Can I ever relate to this!!! I was diagnosed at 22 with RA and Fibro. Because of my age and being into fashion, I still wore high heels most of the time and always for work. When I'd be into a flareup I'd be walking stiff and my company gave me a parking spot by visitors so I wouldn't have to walk too far (especially when it was icy). Oh the comments I would get! Why do YOU get special parking? You're too young for arthritis (sorry folks - toddlers can even get RA), etc., etc.. It got to the point that I had a scripted explanation of what RA really is and how anyone can get it at any age.
Nothing worse than having a medical condition that the world feels you owe them an explanation for.
Waterston_Fan 07-07-2009, 12:57 PM If it's a stranger, I hate to ask them where I work just cause I don't want them to visit me...
But that question was asked of me and I just said, I work at a mall and the guy kept asking.. Then the driver who talks out of his ass tells the guy where I work..
But I haven't had any problems since then but I really need to bring my ipod so people don't talk to me.
InspectorExstead 07-07-2009, 03:19 PM The one thing that bugs the crap out of me, is "Does it suck being short?" I'm 4'11'' and I ALWAYS get a question about that when people meet me. Ten years ago in middle school, it was kind of funny. Now it's annoying.
Everyone I meet asks me variations of that question "How do you do stuff since you're so short?!" "Hey...can you get that for me? Oh wait, you're too short to..."
I'm short, but that doesn't mean I'm not capable of doing or getting stuff. People think it's funny but once you hear it about twice a week or so, it gets pretty damn annoying. And fast.
beautifuldreamer 07-07-2009, 05:21 PM ^That sounds really annoying. I have some friends who are that size, and they are some of the toughest ladies I know. :)
The main annoying questions for me: "How do you pronounce that?" (regarding my name). Ugh, I get it almost every time I try to introduce myself to someone... and I enunciate so clearly... and they STILL don't get it!! I usually have to say it 3 or 4 times, and then spell it for them.
I found this yahoo post on their message board of a bunch of people hating on my name. It's pretty funnny! The Name Matlyn?? (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090110173746AA92T73)
Another one: "Why aren't you dating anyone??" I just HATE that question... and it's almost always from women. It's like they can't comprehend a 19 year old young woman being happily single. Geez louise!
Great idea for a thread, Brad!! You always ask such original questions!!:D
howierules86 07-07-2009, 05:23 PM The question I hate being asked by employees is "What's your home phone number, area code first?"

Hey!! I don't feel so bad anymore!!
I've never had that question about it sucking to be short.
But I have had to ask people to get things for me or put things up for me.
Waterston_Fan 07-07-2009, 05:28 PM The question I hate being asked by employees is "What's your home phone number, area code first?"
I think it's to see who comes to visit that store. So if I went to an Old Navy store in North Carolina, they'd want to know if a tourist from San Diego is visiting or not.
But I agree. I used to get that question but lately I don't. Maybe I can just give them my work number.. LOL
beautifuldreamer 07-07-2009, 05:28 PM Hey!! I don't feel so bad anymore!!

If you don't mind me asking... how tall are you?
ZeldaGilroy 07-07-2009, 05:29 PM Interesting thread. The question I hate the most comes from up at every family reunion, "Why aren't you married yet?" Followed by "Are you dating anyone?" and then the dreaded, "Oh...so you don't want to be with someone?" UGH!
The other question I get a lot usually comes from the kids I work with at school. I have lupus, which luckily I only have the kind that effects my skin and not my organs, but I have a lot of places on my skin that are discolored or scarred and sometimes I have flare ups and I'll have red splotches or dry rashy places on my arms or legs and kids are always asking me "What is that?" or "Did you hurt yourself?" They are always very concerned. I always tell them what it is and then they are fine, except one little girl last year suggested I put some make-up on it to cover it up. I wonder how long it would take me to apply full body make-up everyday? I usually just wear long sleeves and pants.
Waterston_Fan 07-07-2009, 05:30 PM If you don't mind me asking... how tall are you?
4' 10"

I think Matlyn is a very cute name. And it seems easy enough to pronounce to me...maybe I'm pronouncing it wrong though.
beautifuldreamer 07-07-2009, 05:38 PM I think Matlyn is a very cute name. And it seems easy enough to pronounce to me...maybe I'm pronouncing it wrong though.
Awww, thank Billie! I know, right?!?! I always say, it's two syllables: Mat- as in "doormat", Lyn- as in "men"... I'm sure you've got it!! The most common mistake is that people make the "a" sound long instead of short.. like "Mate-lyn" UGH!!
Thanks though, Billie!.. By the way... I've always loved your name!.. It reminds me of the character "Billie" from Night Court... she was so funny and cute! :D

My mom thinks because my sisters and I are not married yet, its because we don't want to be. Good grief.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 07-07-2009, 05:41 PM I hate when people ask me what I'm going to do after college.
I hate when people ask if I have a job.
I hate when people ask why I don't drive.
And I hate when people ask if I'm dating.
Nighthawk76 07-07-2009, 05:42 PM Awww, thank Billie! I know, right?!?! I always say, it's two syllables: Mat- as in "doormat", Lyn- as in "men"... I'm sure you've got it!! The most common mistake is that people make the "a" sound long instead of short.. like "Mate-lyn" UGH!!
Before you, Mattie, I had never met anyone named Matlyn before. Its a beautiful name though. If I have a daughter, I would really consider Matlyn a possible name for her. :)

 Same! My mom's friends would always ask me the same question for a while. Ever since I turned 16, it would always be "Now, why aren't you dating a nice young man?" You don't have to be with someone to be happy! But now I'm in a relationship and they're finally shutting up about it. lol.
And yes, great post Brad, as always!!

I'm glad I'm not alone!

Geez louise, Mike!! That's the best compliment I could get about my name! Thanks!!:D

I know!!!! It was the same with me... and I keep saying, "I'm single and lovin it".... but I'm really happy that you are in a relationship though, I think that's great!

Don't you want to be single for the rest of your life? It amazes me how people think that could be the only possible explanation for not getting married.
I am the only unmarried person over the age of 18 in my family...so they are sure I am either a closeted lesbian or else I am socially inept and will be alone until I die. In fact, I have an aunt who once told me I think I am too good for anybody else and that is why no one likes me. :(
My life is pathetic. I really wish I WANTED to be alone.

 Keep on saying it until they finally realize you mean it! I think at one point my mom's friends thought I was gay because I was single. How...nice! lol.
And thanks! I've been dating someone for over a month and he asked me recently to be his girlfriend. I don't think I had posted anything about it on here, but I kept meaning to in the Feel Good Department. We'll see what happens! But, I do know that if anything happens and we break up, my mom's friends will be back at! They never quit. ;)
MickeyMac 07-07-2009, 06:33 PM I hate being asked "Why dont you have a girlfriend"? If you are so worried about it go find me somebody.
The question that follows me around and will probably go on my f**king tombstone "Why are you so quiet"? I cant win with that. I guess people want me to be a jabber jaw.

Billie, you are a very down to earth person. I've never once picked up any impression that you think you are better than others. Also, you should never see your life as being pathetic. No one who has devoted their life to working with kids (the future of the world), can ever have a life that is considered pathetic. You are also a teriffic mother to three very lucky children.

Thanks Mike. You are always so kind to me. Your post made me cry a little. I wish I didn't see my life as pathetic...I know I am blessed in many ways. I guess I just get a little down sometimes. Thanks for taking the time to make me feel better.

I'm glad that I could help. :) I think a lot of us are going through a difficult time right now. I think the current state of the country is making just about everyone depressed about something.
Hollow 07-07-2009, 08:32 PM anything about my mom under the assumption she's still alive. it's not that it hurts to say she isn't, it's that i feel like i'm making the other person uncomfortable by bringing it up in case they don't know how to respond, so that makes it difficult for both of us.
anything about my former relationship with my best friend. it's too damn complicated to explain briefly. official on and off for a while, then unofficial on and off, then he got "married" but doesn't intend to stay with her forever, and then it takes me a novel of explanation and background information to make the person understand how i know that he isn't just lying about that.
Yooch 07-07-2009, 09:20 PM People I haven't seen in a few years asking me, "So, how do you like retirement?". I tell them, why did you think I'm retired?, and I'm thinking to myself ('Do I look that d*** old?! ) I'm still working.

I think you're echoing what a lot of women (and men too!) feel about relationships.. I mean, yeah, it's nice to be in a relationship, but what is important is that you are happy!... and you can be happy, and looking for love at the same time. All you gotta do is keep your head on straight, and keep your eyes wide open, and you'll find the perfect man for you, Billie. Heck, you're way too awesome to be single for much longer. Some guy is gonna come along and snach you up. :D

Thanks Mattie...you are so sweet!
I guess I'll just sit here a while longer and wait for someone to come snatch me. ;)
dawsongirl 07-08-2009, 12:38 AM I dread being asked about my lovelife, or lack thereof. I'm 28 and still single, with no prospects in sight.
So do I. I'm just going to flip out on people if they bring it up. I'm depressed about my life enough as it is...like I need someone else giving me fake pity.

My family enjoys making me feel like crap too. "Why don't you work full time?" "You'll never find someone." "What are you going to do with your future?" I'm never good enough for them.
 Kids are so perceptive! It's almost annoying. I've gotten a lot of questions about every flaw they can see.
