Doe sany of you know anything about autism syndrome? Or is it anyone here who is autistic?

To let you know, I have the autism syndrome, I mostly tell it when I'vve been on a forum for a while, so people don't see me like some weirdo.

Ok, I am a little weird, haha. Just to let you know, if I post a strange post or something. :)

I have a really great memory, I remember most of the things I hear. Mostly numbers. ^^

I've worked with a few children who were diagnosed with Aspergers. I really do enjoy them. One girl I worked with 1:1 for two years. When she first came to our classroom, she wouldn't look anyone in the eye and spoke in a whisper. I encouraged her to come out of her shell and she even got involed in school activities this year. She's going off to middle school in September and I'm really going to miss her :( I know I shouldn't play favorites, but she was my little sweetheart.

I know a few people with Autism and there are several members here who have it. You're NOT wierd and there's nothing wrong with having it. You just perceive the world a little differently from most people. :)

This world would be way too boring if we were all alike!

Are you good at dates or remembering phone numbers and stuff like that?

I had a friend in high school who had a stepbrother with autism. I remember the brother was able to communicate with people and he seemed to remember a lot of things. I lost contact with my friend when he entered the military.

I'm glad you understand :D No one can see I'm autistic on the outside, since I look ver normal, but when people learn to know me they think I'm a little special, but they like me. :) I do have a disibility in my right arm and right leg, since birth. Nothing special really. I can walk, run, swim, be out cykling... There's nothing stopping me :D

Yes, I know that. I am 18, years old (Born 1990), I'm turning 19 in a few months so they noticed my autism about 4 years ago.

I have Persuasive Developmental Disorder (or PDD)...which is a very common. So that's why some things that 'normal' people learn...I learn slower, like driving.

I won't be able to drive at all. Well, not cars. It has not to do with learning slower, but I think it's hard to concentrate on a lot of things at the same time.

Does any of you know anything about autism syndrome? From what I have heard about it IT IS JUST SOMEONE WHO DOES THIER OWN THING,DOESNT FOLLOW MAINSTRAM,ETC..... If this is the case then some ppl could say I AM AUTISTIC and I am glad!!!

I thankfully HAVE MY OWN MIND,I do not follow mainstream @ all...... I prefer GOOD THINGS,I cant stand the crap in the world now......... I can come to my own conclusions,etc....

I dont like good things becoming garbage..... I am a PURIST!! (I am not satisfied with crap... I KNOW WHAT GOOD IS)

If this is what Autism is,ITS NOT A BAD THING @ ALL -- People just misunderstand what it is!!

A family who owned a small restaurant down the street from me that my wife knows, has a boy who was about eight who is severely mentally handicapped. He is mostly quiet, and would either walk or run around the restaurant and when he was sitting would stare out into space. I love children and tried to interact with him and gave him a few hugs (again, the mother knew us). He didnt mind me hugging him, but wasnt reciprocal. He does have parents who do love him who takes care of him, so that is a plus. I think in China in the culture if a child is "damaged", the child is cast off. Chinese are about "face" and standing.

There is no way in my opinion to make him productive in any sense and it would have been better if he never was born or if he dies young. Cruel to say that, and it is sad to have one limited life and one existance and he has to live like that.

His family does love him but I wonder what life he is going to have in China, who is going to take care of him once his parents die or are too old to care for him. Hopefully he wont be 40 and in some kind of institution with strangers paid for his care who doesnt care for him and lives a solitary life in his own mind.

Certainly pleased whenever anyone feels welcome here. To those who have revealed their personal plight, I respect your courage.

Where I grew up there was a "Vocational Training Center" a few blocks from my house, whose main mission was assisting special needs individuals to integrate into society. And they worked with people who were from wide across the spectrum.

You hear about some such people dramatized in movies such as the Rainman or The Accountant .... who, despite their challenges, have unique gifts to go along with them.

Those of you with experience, do you believe those movies were realistic, or were they exploitative? I've heard both ways.

Personally, I met a few people from the above training center who were pretty remarkable people.

This is an instructional and educational discussion on autism, called In A Different Key. Here they are talking about a yet-to-be-published book, and at the time it was put on Youtube I think it was about four years old. There is a longer-playing program on PBS, two hours with the same title, that was on at 3 am today. I'm told it's playing through the month. The discussion here follows Donald, who is essentially adopted by the small town of Forest, Mississippi. He is now 85 years old. It's around 49 minutes long, and, using another adjective, enlightening:

There is another Youtube entry, probably another book presentation. It has horrible, unintelligible audio and not worth the struggle to hear it.
