View Full Version : I Saw Dick York in an old movie today!
Marvo301 07-06-2009, 08:40 PM I was watching a movie called My Sister Eileen on Turner Classic Movies and I spotted a familiar face. It was Dick York. He was playing an out of work fellow training to become a football player. So he was wearing sweat pants and a sweat shirt in almost every scene he was in. It took me a couple of minutes to figure out who it was since I'm used to seeing him in suits and ties on Bewitched!! This movie was made in 1955. Betty Garrett (All in the Family, Laverne and Shirley) was also in the cast.
catlover79 07-06-2009, 08:44 PM I've seen that movie, too - it's great. Janet Leigh and Jack Lemmon are also in the cast. My library has it - I'll have to check it out again one of these days.
Marvo301 07-06-2009, 08:48 PM It was a very enjoyable movie. By the way Dick York was billed as "Richard York" for this movie.

I think that was the only time he was billed under his full name, but I could be wrong.

I looked up Dick York's credits on IMDB.com. According to them he was billed as "Richard York" twice. One was "My Sister Eileen" the other was a 1950 film called "Last Date".

My pleasure!
catlover79 07-07-2009, 12:05 AM My pleasure!
I never saw Last Date. I think the only other DY movie I saw was Inherit the Wind (a classic, by the way).
Schmoopie 07-07-2009, 03:02 AM That's cool! I love spotting familiar faces in movies without realizing they were in it in the first place! I love Jack Lemmon, so I'll see if I can find the movies mentioned!
MickeyMac 07-07-2009, 06:07 PM In some of those educational films from the early 50's you will see Dick York. Nick at Nite used to show those.

Another flick starring Jack Lemmon and a Bewitched cast member (in this case, Paul Lynde) was 1963's Under the Yum Yum Tree.
comedyfreak 07-09-2009, 12:41 PM I'd like to see the movie sometime.

Marvo301 11-02-2009, 12:19 AM It always surprises me that Betty Garrett didn't become a bigger star. She was a fine actress, she sang well, and was a great dancer. A true triple threat. I guess for us sitcom lovers it's a good thing she didn't becoma a major movie star. She probably would never have been on "All in the Family" or "Laverne and Shirley" if she had!

That's true - and I can't imagine anyone else in the roles of Irene Lorenzo or Edna Babish!!

Me either!
catlover79 11-02-2009, 10:36 AM Who else besides me thinks it's a travesty that DY does not have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame? Elizabeth has one, and so does Agnes Moorehead. I mean, look at some of the people who have stars. Ryan Seacrest? Give me a break!!

I agree that Dick York deserves more respect and recognition. He appeared in movies, logged numerous appearances on anthology TV series, guest starred on numerous westerns, and then become one of our best known sitcom actors. Not only was DY a talented actor he was a very versatile one! Few actors can succeed in so many different genres. Give the man his star! He earned it!

YES!!! He could play comedy, drama, romance and do it all WELL. Plus he did some very grueling physical comedy, too - this was a man who had a degenerative spinal condition and you'd never know it from watching Bewitched now. Hey, if EM can get a posthumous star, why can't he???

If you and I were on the committee I'm sure DY would already have a star!!

Totally!!!!
comedyfreak 11-03-2009, 06:49 AM Dick York should have a star on the Walk Of Fame. Actually he could get one someone would have to pay for his star, I think is how it works.

How much does that kind of thing cost, anyway?
Marvo301 11-03-2009, 07:15 PM Nomination process
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Walk of Fame Committee is responsible for selecting a new group of entertainers each year to receive stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. New recipients are announced each June for the following year. In order for a person to get a star on the Walk of Fame, he or she must agree to attend a presentation ceremony within five years of selection, and a fee (currently $25,000, up from $15,000) must be paid to the Trust; some of it ($5,000 of $15,000 in December 2003) is set aside for maintenance and repair, with the rest going towards the installation, security, publicity, and staging costs.[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_Walk_of_Fame#cite_note-fox2003-8)
The fee is often paid by sponsors such as film studios (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film_studio) and record companies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Record_industry), as part of the publicity (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Publicity) for a release with which the honoree is involved.[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_Walk_of_Fame#cite_note-fox2003-8); as Johnny Grant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Grant) pointed out in 2006: "These studios, when they want a star and they've got a picture opening, they'd give you $100,000".[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_Walk_of_Fame#cite_note-ap2006-1) On other occasions, the fee is paid by a fan club.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_Walk_of_Fame#cite_note-ap2006-1)

Well, that's out of my price range! Hopefully someone with $$$$ out there, like a studio or some other bigwig, will notice this oversight and correct it!!!
