View Full Version : Caller ID and You
Janice 06-27-2009, 04:50 PM If someone calls you but does not leave a message, do you call the person back because you see their phone number on your Caller ID? In that case, I don't call the person. I feel that perhaps they wanted to speak to me at that time only, maybe with a quick recipe question or they had time for a quick chat -- and they don't want to talk later. They may have misdialed. I may call a friend at 3 in the afternoon, but I don't want to talk at 6 when I'm making dinner or 8 when I'm watching a movie. What are your thoughts? Do you call people who don't leave a message, but their number is on your CID?
PZelda 06-27-2009, 05:09 PM Nope. They absolutely must leave me a voicemail. I am deaf, but I do have my own mobile phone and the ability to get voicemail on it. I can't listen to my voicemail myself, so I have to have a relay operator do it for me. It's even specifically stated in my voicemail greeting. Something like "Hey there! You've reached Allison. If you are someone calling me, please text me at the same number you're calling, or leave me a voicemail. If you're a place of business calling me, please leave me a voicemail and I will get back to you ASAP." It works. :D
No. I HATE it when I call a wrong number and the person from the 'wrong number' calls me back after that. Ugh!!
Edit: if it's somebody I know, I will call them back in case of emergency, just to make sure everything's OK.
Marvo301 06-27-2009, 05:10 PM If they don't leave a message I don't cal them back.
catlover79 06-27-2009, 05:19 PM If I don't recognize the number, I don't pick up. If no message is left, I don't call back. Very simple.

Me, too. Most of the people who call my home phone are people selling stuff, a local charity hitting me up for money, or simply just a recording of a corporation. Nonoe of those is worth answering. Alot of them show a toll free number on my CID. When I started getting those, I was curious one day and answered it. It was somebody selling something.

Me too! Once I let my younger cousin use my phone when she was visiting. Later that evening a woman called (her boyfriend's mother? another girlfriend?) and demanded to know who I was because my name was on her caller ID. I couldn't believe someone could be that much of a control freak.

InspectorExstead 06-27-2009, 06:50 PM I call them back. My friends don't always leave me a voicemail because they know if I don't pick up, I'll usually call back within a half hour. If I don't recognize the number I won't call them back-it's most likely a wrong number. But if it's a friend or family member, I'll call back.

I do the same thing, I don't call back... I figure, if it wasn't important enough to leave a message for, then they'll call back when it is.:)
Jude The Obscure 06-27-2009, 07:28 PM Nope--that's why I have an answering machine. (And I mean machine, not voicemail LOL)
Family Ties Forever! 06-27-2009, 07:39 PM I don't have caller id, so if someone calls and doesn't leave a message I won't know that they called. I appreciate it when people leave a message. :) I know most people have caller id.
I only call back if it's someone in the immediate family. I also have an answering machine so anyone else can leave a message.
ZeldaGilroy 06-27-2009, 09:26 PM I usually have my cell phone in my purse and can hear it ringing but can't find it in time to answer. Everyone knows this about me, so they expect me to just call back. :) If it's someone I don't know I won't call, they should leave a message.
robyrob 06-27-2009, 09:50 PM i don't answer the phone and hardly ever call anyone back

Well, you called back last Tuesday. And I was glad that you did. :)
ZeldaGilroy 06-27-2009, 10:55 PM ^Yeah, well I was pretty sure it was you. I know I sounded like I didn't know who it was but that was because it made me nervous. I'm quirky like that. Sorry.
I'm glad I called back though...it was so much fun! :)

Oh, don't worry about it. At first I was nervous too. I mentioned when I called Kim I was too scared to leave a message on her voicemail the first time and then had to call back to leave a message. When I was dialing your number I was scared stiff too. However, it turned out great. :)
I know this sounds really wacky, but I can't stand to talk on the telephone unless it's to somebody close. It makes me nervous and almost sends me through the ceiling  I would rather be face to face

I perfer face to face as well, but considering that I live in Illinois and Billie lives in Kansas, that would be pretty difficult. The telephone is the next best thing though. I think you can can get a better sense of who someone is as a person by actually hearing them talk, than by just reading their words. I knew, for example, that Billie was kind and inteliigent, but I never knew she had such a great sense of humor until I talked to her over the phone.

I'm the same way!!! I have such a hard time making phone calls! It's something about the fact that I can't see the people, and read their body language and pick up on their signals etc... and I'm just really visual, and hate it when I can't see the other person.
But like Mike said, if you wanna hear the sound of another person's voice, and you live in different states ( ), then you have no other choice really.
dawsongirl 06-28-2009, 02:01 AM I don't even answer the phone most of the time. There's no way I'd call someone back without a message.
Hollow 06-28-2009, 02:14 AM yeah, i do. i prefer they text me though. i hate the phone. it makes me nervous and i'm always terrified of not understanding what they say and becoming an interference by asking them to repeat themselves all the time.

It's interesting that you mentioned Relay because I work in a call center and we get Relay calls quite a bit. I'd never even heard about that service before I started working there.
I don't have caller ID, but I appreciate it if people leave messages on my voice mail. Otherwise I have no idea if I'm missing any calls or not.
My cell supposedly has caller ID, but it never works, even when someone who is listed in my phone book is calling me. Anyone know how to fix this? I have a RAZR T-Mobile phone.

Same here.
Scoobiedoo30 06-28-2009, 11:40 AM if it someone I know I call them back but If I do not know the person I do not call the person back.
Penny Lane 06-28-2009, 11:40 AM I call back if it is my sister or daughter. But other than those two I figure if someone doesn't leave a message it can't be too important. I love caller ID! If I choose not to answer a call it's my choice!:D

Me too I never know what to say to people on the phone. Its its someone that lives in a different city then thats different because I dont see them often.
Crimson and Clover 06-28-2009, 02:59 PM Depends on who it is. If its my mom or grandmother Ill call them back. Anyone else no.
dawsongirl 06-28-2009, 08:16 PM I love caller ID! If I choose not to answer a call it's my choice!:D
I do too. I'd never answer the phone without it.
browneyes106 06-28-2009, 08:26 PM A lot of my friends and relatives don't like leaving messages on my answering machine. So I usually call them back if I see their numbers on the caller ID's.
Coffeecup 07-01-2009, 10:58 AM I have caller Id phones that shouts out the caller/number. Now I don't even have to look at the phone. Most are charities looking for money so when I hear "out of area, unavailable, or any odd name/number" I just let it ring. Out of 50 calls a month that come in, 6 or so I call back or hear a message. Pansonic has 4-5 phones packs that you use. One plugs into the phone line and the rest into a electrical outlets. We have 5 phones through out the house. Technology is great!
Lodee 07-01-2009, 11:09 AM My caller ID shows up on the TV now. LOL. I like not having to even look at the phone.
I usually call back if it's a friend or relative too. Sometimes not though. Depends on my mood I guess.
