View Full Version : Whats your biggest beef with DVD Production Companies?
McGillicuddy 06-24-2009, 04:05 PM Which of these examples of companies do ticks you off the most?
Releasing shows with edited episodes
Releasing shows with no extras at all
Releasing shows with replaced music
Releasing a full series of a show with wonderful extras after fans have purchased season by season
The delay (or halt) of seasons of a show being released halfway through
( All in The Family; The Jeffersons; Mary Tyler Moore; Bob Newhart; Green Acres;)
No Season 2 after you wait forever for Season 1 (Maude; One Day at a Time; Archie Bunker's Place; Newhart)
Starting up a major stars follow-up series before they finish the first (Newhart, Archie Bunker's Place)
Not completing a series with their follow-up series or reunion shows (Three's Company/Three's a Crowd; The Golden Girls/Golden Palace
Splitting seasons of shows in half, it started with hour shows (Love Boat; Dynasty) now half-hour shows ( My Three Sons)
Changing the packaging in the middle of dvd season releases (which makes it look stupid on your shelf)

All of the above
quincywagstaff 06-24-2009, 07:55 PM I can live with replaced music (depending on the show), no extras, split seasons, even re-releasing seasons in a complete series set with extras. But releasing edited episodes is really obnoxious and disrespectful to fans, like Warner with Mama's Family season 1 (unless the unedited episodes have deteriorated beyond salvaging) second only to studio's failing to release the complete series, especially shows that are generally considered to be classic or milestone shows, like the MTM shows, All in the Family, Maude, etc.
peachysquirt21 06-25-2009, 10:33 AM I like to have seasons unedited but if is so happens they are edited, I can live with that. To me that is not a really big deal.
Replacing music, dvd sets that are cheaply made, sets that have double sided discs, releasing so many seasons & then not bothering to release the rest instead they release the complete series or releasing the first season & noth bothering to release future seasons.
Those to me are more of a serious nature then if the seasons are edited.
R.jsheedy 06-27-2009, 07:27 PM Eiter Changing the packaging in the middle of dvd season releases (which makes it look stupid on your shelf), or No Season 2 after you wait forever for Season 1.
sigmapi30 06-28-2009, 11:08 AM I can't pick one from these..but my biggest beef's are:
Releasing shows with edited episodes (I dont think I've been impacted with those shows I purchased but would dislike if I was)
Releasing a full series of a show with wonderful extras after fans have purchased season by season (I'd prefer complete series sets to save space and time, but i actually prefer the packaging of the season sets)
The delay (or halt) of seasons of a show being released halfway through (I've been lucky so far with the series I've bought)
No Season 2 after you wait forever for Season 1 (Mama's Family)
Not completing a series with their follow-up series or reunion shows (The Golden Girls/Golden Palace)
Splitting seasons of shows in half (Dynasty)
Changing the packaging in the middle of dvd season releases (ABSOLUTELY HATE THIS)
torcan 06-28-2009, 01:39 PM All of the above, but two of my biggest are not showing original opening titles for some shows. Example: Bewitched is my all-time favorite, and none of the DVDs have the original openings, which is annoying. Also, failure to include any extras, such as the "in color" tags which preceded shows from the mid-60s onwards, or even ".....will be back in a moment" bumpers which always aired just before the epilogue on most shows.
Maybe small things, but it just adds to the overall enjoyment. I've always been of the opinion that if that's the way the shows originally aired, they should be that way on DVD sets.
McGillicuddy 06-28-2009, 03:40 PM I agree about Bewitched. There's so much material that could have been included in this cult favorite/classic series. It looks like the Erin Murphy commentary is the only additional extra to the complete series set, but maybe, just maybe will be surprised with more???!!!!(and I don't consider the theatrical release an extra to the tv series)
Dusty's Fan 07-20-2009, 10:26 AM Also, failure to include any extras, such as the "in color" tags which preceded shows from the mid-60s onwards, or even ".....will be back in a moment" bumpers which always aired just before the epilogue on most shows.
I love that kind of stuff as well. I think it adds a LOT to a set, giving viewers an experience quite a bit closer to the original.
Even an edited tag would be better than none. In syndication for very late years of My Three Sons, for example, prior to the opening animation we see Fred MacMurray, seated and saying "Hi! Welcome to our show" -- where apparently the original's complete line was "our show for Chevrolet." At least the part that is seen and heard is better than nothing! I hope that the end credits are slowed back down if we ever get that far as well (reportedly sped up for syndication packages).

Elizabeth did that too in the latter seasons of Bewitched. At the beginning she would appear and say "Hi, Stay tuned for Bewitched...Next...In Color."
Why could that not have been included?
megamanj2004 07-21-2009, 03:23 PM Mine are:
- Replacing the original TV Closing logos on some shows. Sony and CBS-Paramount and/or even 20th Century Fox Television/News Corp. do this a heck of a lot. Although some shows originally never really had a TV closing logo to begin with.
- Replacing music with cheap music scores. It's one thing to save up on muisc issues but to replace them with horrid, cheap music pakcages? That makes your DVD's of some shows sound and/or look cheap. CBS-Paramount is very guilty of that practice, especially on their DVD's for "The Fugitive" and the 2nd and 3rd seasons of "Happy Days" DVD's.
- Bad DVD labels. If your DVd Label Box cover looks cheap, chances are your whole DVD set will come out and look cheap.
- Releasing a show and/or delaying or never releasing the rest of the series. Don't disappoint your fans by promising to release another season of a cetain show and leaving them hanging for far too long.
- Lack of extras and/or bogus editing. If you're gonna put a show on DVD, at least include something that's never seen in syndication or since its original reruns. And when you put a show on DVD, don't butcher the episodes up to oblivion. Sony did this with their DVD set of "227" by haphazardly cramming episodes onto discs.
Heidi Dawn 07-22-2009, 10:25 AM My biggest beefs:
Paramount splitting some of its shows into volume sets - like Love Boat, Dynasty. I prefer paying more to buy the complete season instead of volume sets.
Companies such as Paramount, Sony, and MGM stalling on their DVD releases.
bmasters9 07-28-2009, 06:00 AM One I have: CBS using silver discs for its television releases. This makes it difficult for me to submit pictures to Amazon (I do so quite a bit, being that you can submit your own pictures of a release).

I agree with all of these and they're my beefs too.
ryan423 07-30-2009, 01:45 PM I agree with all of these and they're my beefs too.
I can live with music subsitution, but I hate when a theme song is changed, such as the single releases of What I Like About You and George Lopez. But it's more important to me to have the whole series. It kills me to buy one season of a favorite show and then not see the rest come afterwards.
Impressions 07-30-2009, 01:54 PM another big one is when they release season sets with the cover art being from the wrong season!
BensonFan 07-30-2009, 10:36 PM Everything that was mentioned in the first post, plus when they include stupid promos at the beginning of the disc. You don't need to remind me that MacGyver, Happy Days, or the Brady Bunch are available on DVD. Ten years from now when I pop these into the DVD player, you'll STILL be reminding me.
bluthree 07-31-2009, 09:36 AM Yeah I hate when the studios release a season 1 set and then drop the show due to lack of sales. Excuse me what about the people that did buy the season 1 set?
Yeah and I hate when they change the music. Delete Golden Oldies and replace them with generic junk.
And release TV shows with edited episodes-Thinks alot Liongates for treating ALF like garbage. We fans emailed them and sent letters, and made phone calls and did that help? Nope.
And for movies I hate when they keep double dipping with some hit movies. Release a hit movie on DVD,and six months later they announce there going to release a director's cut.Been hapening for years with DVD.And now there doing it with Blu-Ray-The Polar Express,300,No Country For Old Men have all 3 been released more then once on Blu-Ray. Gush the format has not been around for very long and there all ready double dipping. And now there going to release the orginal cut of The Lord of The Rings Trilogy this fall, and next year will be the extended version coming out on Blu-Ray.Nice!
Retro76 10-03-2009, 07:12 PM I agree with all of the beefs and Paramount or CBS Paramount is accountable for most of them. I have been waiting for the Season 2 of Love, American Style and I will be damned if I have to pay full price for half a season. This is why they claimed LAS had low sales. Since season 2 had mostly half-hour shows, then it should come as one volume, not two.
They did this also to The Love Boat (Seasons 1 and 2) and Melrose Place Season 5 for some odd reason and yet charge the same price as a full season set.
The In Color tags would have helped in the THAT GIRL sets.
And oh, yes, the closing logo replacements should be a no-no!

Hear that, Sony, 20th Television, and CBS-Paramount!

Fortunatly Warner Bros in Europe released ALF with 99% unedited episodes.
OnTheMarkTexas 10-06-2009, 10:29 AM Releasing syndicated versions of episodes and not mentioning it on the packaging (RHODA - Season 1).
Substituting original music and not mentioning it on the packaging (QUANTUM LEAP - Season 2).
Omitting an episode from a box set because said company was unable to obtain licensing rights to original music and being unwilling to subsititute generic music to keep the episode on the the release (PROFILER - Season 1).
Releasing an edited / censored version of a season and advertising it as the "Complete" season (TRACEY TAKES ON... - Seasons 3 & 4).
When no effort is made to "clean up" a show for its DVD release (too many shows to mention).

You took the words right out of my mouth!! I agree with all of those but my biggest beef would be the music issue.

This should be the new cardinal rules for releasing shows on DVD's.
Any company that releases TV Show DVD's that violates all of these cardinal rules should receive one of these:

Three of mine are like that, and those three comprise the complete series (all three seasons) of "Hardcastle and McCormick."
