View Full Version : Abe Vigoda wants us all to know: "I'm still not dead"
Brian Damage 06-19-2009, 11:18 PM The 88-year-old resurfaced at some event in NYC, looking sanctified.
In 1982, People magazine reported Abe had died.
Vigoda appeared on the last episode of "Late Night with Conan O'Brien."

Marvo301 06-19-2009, 11:29 PM Boy, Abe sure showed them. Twenty-seven years later he's still alive and kicking! Way to go Abe!!! ;)
catlover79 06-19-2009, 11:30 PM I love Abe. He rules!! :D
Marvo301 06-19-2009, 11:37 PM I love Abe. He rules!! :D
He certainly does! By the way Monika I love your new avatar. I often see pictures of Liz with Dick York or Dick Sargeant but it's much more rare to see her in pictures with her real life hubby Bill Asher.
catlover79 06-20-2009, 01:45 PM Thank you, Marv! Yes, I liked that picture of them. Plus, Bill Asher was not only the main director/producer of Bewitched, but he was partly responsible for the on-screen additions of Tabitha and Adam on the show. ;) (Except in real life, they were named Robert and Rebecca.)
Retro4Life 06-20-2009, 02:21 PM So when Barney Miller premiered in 1974 Vigoda was only 53 years old...wow. :)
Anyway, glad he's still with us! :)
robyrob 06-20-2009, 03:33 PM Abe's a peach and I hope he's with us for another 88 years.
catlover79 06-21-2009, 12:11 AM I mentioned on another BM thread that I told my mom that Abe Vigoda was in a Super Bowl commercial earlier this year. Her reaction? "Abe Vigoda is still alive?" It's so nice to know that Abe has such a great sense of humor and is still going strong at his age. His Conan O'Brien bits were always hysterical.

Did you see the bit on Conan's last New York show where he took Abe to Central Park and set him free to reunite with "his own kind"? It was hilariuous!

I missed that one - dang it!!
FanofRetroTV 08-06-2009, 12:18 PM I would like to see him out live Wojo
catlover79 08-28-2009, 03:41 PM Abe is 88 years old! I thought he would be a lot older. He looked that age when he was playing Fish back in the 1970's.
He's barely aged a bit. :D
Retro4Life 08-28-2009, 04:51 PM He's barely aged a bit. :D
I heard he underwent some kind of ritual near the Fountain of Youth that might have forestalled the aging process a bit...want proof?

Marvo301 08-28-2009, 05:09 PM Still haven't seen Abe on Conan O'Brien's Tonight Show. Just another of the many reasons the show isn't very good. It needs more Abe!!!!!:D

Ultimately, don't we ALL need "more Abe"?

You'd better believe it!! :D
biffbronson 08-30-2009, 07:28 PM I remember Abe about equally well from both Barney Miller and Fish. Fish was a pretty good series, I hope all of you have a chance to see it sometime.

I've never seen the Fish spinoff, but I'd like to someday.

I liked it personally.
It wasn't perfect, but somehow the whole scenario seemed to fit for the character and even the "house full of kids" thing wasn't too abrasive since the kids were tolerable and at least somewhat realistic, and the actors playing them were good.
Plus I'm always a sucker for the "old fashioned guy has to cope with the insanities of a modern world he doesn't understand or like" theme. :)
catlover79 08-30-2009, 09:45 PM Plus, I'd watch Abe in just about anything. I do, however, think comedy is where he truly shines. NO ONE can do deadpan like him! :D

I'd personally love to just watch Abe read the phone book. That would be awesome.

That would be incredible! Only Abe could pull that off in an entertaining way. I think he would be very entertaining!

Someone should get him to do that. :D Did you know that Abe was in the running to play the Monster in Young Frankenstein? As much as I loved Peter Boyle in the role, I would've loved to see Abe's take on it - especially the "Puttin' On the Ritz" scene.

With his deadpan face Abe would of been awesome in that part! That "Puttin' On The Ritz" scene would have been legendary with Abe as the Monster!!!

Yes, supposedly Abe was in the running because Mel Brooks noted his startling resemblance to Boris Karloff.

Wow! There really is a rresemblance!

FINALLY! Someone else mentioned this resemblance! I've always thought it was just me! :happyface

You're definitely not the first person to notice the resemblance. Take this gem from "Discovery", from Season 2 of Barney Miller. In this episode's subplot, Fish's file has somehow been deleted by the police database and has him declared dead. A victim later tells him, "You know, you look exactly like Boris Karloff."
Fish looks to the camera for a beat, then says simply, "That's because we're both dead." Classic!!!

You know I DO remember that now that you mentioned it.
Not only does he LOOK like Karloff, there's something in his soft spoken speech pattern that really puts me in mind of the great Karloff. :)

I know - it's so cool.
tv star collector 10-28-2009, 09:40 AM The resemblance was also pointed out in the humor magazine Cracked,
in the January 1977 issue (#139), in a parody of Barney Miller (titled
"Blarney Miller"), in which an off-panel character in the squad room says,
"Some times he reminds me of Boris Karloff!"
