TVFactFan 05-29-2009, 11:34 PM CBS copied NBC's Golden Girls with "Designing Women" CBS copied NBC"s Cosby Show with "Charlie and Company Anymore??? Brian Damage 05-29-2009, 11:40 PM Friends----> Can't Hurry Love TVFactFan 05-29-2009, 11:50 PM Friends----> Can't Hurry Love Another CBS show-lol 70s show watcher 05-30-2009, 12:18 AM how about abc copying nbc;s different strokes with webster TVFactFan 05-30-2009, 12:25 AM how about abc copying nbc;s different strokes with webster Yup I agree, ABC thought by adding another white Parent made it look like a different show-lol It was still a show with a pint size Black kid living with White Parents-lol megamanj2004 05-30-2009, 03:07 AM What about... NBC copying ABC's "Bewitched" w/ "I Dream of Jeannie?" Both shows had good-looking female lead that had magical powers with hnadsome guys on their sides. NBC and ABC each had a show in the fall of 1987 that had two or three single and/or widowed guys taking care of the daughter or daughters. And those shows were "Full House" (ABC) and "My Two Dads" (NBC). ABC and CBS each had a show that came in the same year and ended in the same year w/ kooky-spooky families in "The Addams Family" (ABC) and "The Munsters" (CBS). comedyfreak 05-30-2009, 05:47 AM ABC and CBS each had a show that came in the same year and ended in the same year w/ kooky-spooky families in "The Addams Family" (ABC) and "The Munsters" (CBS). But both were original ideas and not copied by one another. Munsters were from the Leave It To Beaver team and wondered about monsters living in suburbia who happened to look like the monsters from Universal and called them the Munsters. The Addams Family were based on the cartoons from Charles Addams in The New Yorker magazine. More of a coincidence than copying from another network. Back on subject: How about How I Met Your Mother CBS copying NBC's Friends in the way of a group of friends hanging out in a bar instead of a coffee shop, going through life's ups and downs. browneyes106 05-30-2009, 12:51 PM A lot of people think that UPN borrowed a lot of ideas from Fox and Married with Children for Unhappily Ever After. OOliver 05-30-2009, 05:07 PM Here's an oldie... "I Married Joan" (1952-55) was hoped to be NBC's answer to the megahit "I Love Lucy" (1951-57) on rival CBS. "Joan" even premiered on the same day as "Lucy" (October 15)...only one year later. The show starred actress Joan Davis, whom NBC pushed as 'The Queen of Comedy' (they obviously never heard of Lucille Ball?), and Jim Backus as her husband whose patience is frequently tested by the comical antics of his scatterbrained wife. 'Joan' would find herself in the wackiest situations with or without the help of her 'younger sister' Beverly (think Lucy's best friend Ethel). However, the show was just not funny, and despite the fact that NBC stuck with it for three seasons, it was always the 'least watched' show in it's time slot. It was finally cancelled due to dismal ratings. Buffyboy323 05-30-2009, 05:09 PM how about abc copying nbc;s different strokes with webster ABC also "copied" or picked up Growing Pains, their version of NBC's Family Ties (I preferred Growing Pains). Buffyboy323 05-30-2009, 05:10 PM A lot of people think that UPN borrowed a lot of ideas from Fox and Married with Children for Unhappily Ever After. Unhappilly...Ever After was on The WB, not UPN. TVFactFan 05-30-2009, 05:15 PM ABC also "copied" or picked up Growing Pains, their version of NBC's Family Ties (I preferred Growing Pains). Growing Pains and Family Ties had great theme songs-lol JamesG 05-30-2009, 05:15 PM Unhappilly...Ever After was on The WB, not UPN. It was also created by the creator of Married With Children Buffyboy323 05-30-2009, 05:18 PM Growing Pains and Family Ties had great theme songs-lol :rotflmao: They're my favorite theme songs from the '80s!!! LOL Buffyboy323 05-30-2009, 05:20 PM It was also created by the creator of Married With Children Yep! I loved both shows. I was obsessed with Tiffany Malloy for a lot of my childhood. JamesG 05-30-2009, 05:24 PM Yep! I loved both shows. I was obsessed with Tiffany Malloy for a lot of my childhood. Oh believe me I was too. I don't know why this show is yet to be released on DVD. Buffyboy323 05-30-2009, 05:30 PM Oh believe me I was too. I don't know why this show is yet to be released on DVD. I guess because it was always looked at as the Married...with Children "ripoff." Also, it was a little sitcom on The WB network (one of their first sitcoms actually). Maybe the studios think the show will bomb on DVD. After all, many people wanted nothing to do with The WB network, LOL. Me personally though, I guess you can say that was my "day." I loved it. JamesG 05-30-2009, 07:03 PM I guess because it was always looked at as the Married...with Children "ripoff." Also, it was a little sitcom on The WB network (one of their first sitcoms actually). Maybe the studios think the show will bomb on DVD. After all, many people wanted nothing to do with The WB network, LOL. Me personally though, I guess you can say that was my "day." I loved it. I wouldn't really call it little. The show lasted 5 seasons which is not really short-lived. I miss the days I used to watch this when it aired on syndication during the wee hours. Buffyboy323 05-30-2009, 07:27 PM I wouldn't really call it little. The show lasted 5 seasons which is not really short-lived. I miss the days I used to watch this when it aired on syndication during the wee hours. I say it was a "little" show because it wasn't mainstream like a lot of other sitcoms from the 1990's. It never garnered critical praise. And the ratings weren't that great (as far as the other networks were concerened anyway). It was a little show on a little network. I'm sure a lot of people just brushed it off because of that. Oh well, that was there loss. The show starred Nikki Cox and a stuffed (animal) bunny. It was hilarious! I watched it all through it's original run and then at 1:30am on my local FOX affiliate a few years later. GARFIELDKOOL 05-30-2009, 07:30 PM I don't know if this was a copy cat, because they both debuted the same year(one a few weeks before the other other) "Who's the Boss?" on ABC and "Charles In Charge" on CBS. I want to say "Gimmie A Break!" on NBC took inspiration from "Benson" on ABC, but I don't know. "Tucker" on NBC definitely was a copycat of "Malcolm in the Middle" on FOX TVFactFan 05-30-2009, 09:43 PM I don't know if this was a copy cat, because they both debuted the same year(one a few weeks before the other other) "Who's the Boss?" on ABC and "Charles In Charge" on CBS. I want to say "Gimmie A Break!" on NBC took inspiration from "Benson" on ABC, but I don't know. "Tucker" on NBC definitely was a copycat of "Malcolm in the Middle" on FOX Good one Garfieldkool, yup NBC defintely had Benson in mind when they created Gimmie a Break GARFIELDKOOL 05-30-2009, 11:01 PM Good one Garfieldkool, yup NBC defintely had Benson in mind when they created Gimmie a Break The reason why I said I wasn't sure is because Benson looked after a mansion, and on Gimmie a Break, Nell was a housekeeper for an average family, but the premise is still there from one show to another. GARFIELDKOOL 05-30-2009, 11:02 PM I just thought of another one......"That's My Mama" on ABC tried to be a hit like "Sanford and Son" on NBC. TVFactFan 05-30-2009, 11:06 PM I just thought of another one......"That's My Mama" on ABC tried to be a hit like "Sanford and Son" on NBC. Yeah it just had the MOM instead of the POP-lol JamesG 05-30-2009, 11:23 PM I say it was a "little" show because it wasn't mainstream like a lot of other sitcoms from the 1990's. I think the only critical praise this show got was from horny teenagers like us. megamanj2004 05-31-2009, 01:48 AM I guess because it was always looked at as the Married...with Children "ripoff." Also, it was a little sitcom on The WB network (one of their first sitcoms actually). Maybe the studios think the show will bomb on DVD. After all, many people wanted nothing to do with The WB network, LOL. Me personally though, I guess you can say that was my "day." I loved it. Ron Leavitt was the co-mastermind behind both shows incidentally. megamanj2004 05-31-2009, 01:56 AM I don't know if this was a copy cat, because they both debuted the same year(one a few weeks before the other other) "Who's the Boss?" on ABC and "Charles In Charge" on CBS. If you're thinking in the terms of a macho-man acting as housekeeper than good call! factsoflife 06-01-2009, 02:33 AM Friends----> Can't Hurry Love not to mention FOX copying friends to create "Partners" in the 1995 season. Or NBC copying friends to create half their 90's schedule: Caroline in the city, veronica's closet, suddenly susan, for you love, union square, conrad bloom just to name a few. factsoflife 06-01-2009, 02:39 AM CBS copied NBC's Golden Girls with "Designing Women" Anymore??? other than the fact they are set in the south and star females i see almost no similarity between these two. DW was a very different kind of show than TGG. TGG was more broad in it's humor and went more for the quick laugh. DW was more based in reality and was more topical, the characters expierenced growth on a weekly basis and the stories were more serialized in nature. Plus, DW was based a lot on Linda Bloodworth-Thomason's life and people she had known growing up. Sure some of the characters share similar traits (Blanche and Suzanne the spoiled, oversexed ones; Charlene and rose the ditzy one, etc) but other than some surface comparisons they are very different shows. For one thing, Blanche didn't grow that much over the course of the show whereas Suzanne was a very different person by the time she left DW. Same with Charlene, she grew leaps and bounds over the course of the series. I think it's easy to compare two shows based on surface traits, but if you really examined the shows you'd see they are really very different in major ways. I would say though two shows very similar are ABC's "Who's The Boss" and CBS's "The Nanny" in both cases a middle class person works for an upperclass person taking care of kids and a house; class tensions ensue and the two lead characters eventually fall in love. A lot of the scripts for The Nanny seemed like carbon copies of the WTB scripts with the sexes reversed and a couple different characters thrown in. browneyes106 06-01-2009, 09:49 AM Unhappilly...Ever After was on The WB, not UPN. My bad sorry. I got it mixed up. OOliver 06-01-2009, 09:52 AM "If you're thinking in the terms of a macho-man acting as housekeeper than good call!" That's funny- I never considered Scott Baio a 'macho man' ! :happyface "Ellen" (originally titled 'These Friends of Mine') was an obvious rip off "Seinfeld". jimpickens 06-02-2009, 12:58 AM They have all copied an idea from each other at on time or another after all this is the networks we are talking about. |
