View Full Version : Does it make you sad to listen to music by dead artists?
Schmoopie 05-26-2009, 05:13 AM There was a thread on another section that asked if you feel sad watching an actor on TV, knowing that they are dead, so I was thinking about this the other day.
When you listen to music and hear a song by someone who has died, does it make you feel sad?
One that comes to mind for me is John Denver. I have always loved his music, but I never actually bought one of his CD's until well after he died. Now when I listen to it, it makes me kind of sad, knowing that he's gone.
Another is Dennis and Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys.
I know there are others, but I'll add them later.
browneyes106 05-26-2009, 10:05 AM I do sometimes get said when I listen to TLC's music because I think about Lisa Lopes a lot. I also sometimes get sad listening to Jeff Buckley's stuff.
tv star collector 05-26-2009, 11:50 AM I miss Elvis Presley, John Lennon, George Harrison, Perry Como, Dean Martin,
Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, John Denver, Buck Owens and Johnny Cash (and,
I'm sure, many others). They gave us some great music, and I'm sorry
they're not here to give us more. :(
Jessica 05-26-2009, 12:56 PM I don't really cry when I listen to them, but it sure is sad when you know they're not alive anymore. I mean, some dead artists has made really happy songs and it makes you happy and you wanna dance to it, but in the same way, it's sad. I'm sure you know what I mean. For example Baltimora's super hit from 1985 "Tarzan Boy" what a song! And I like some of Laura Branigan's songs and Elvis.
phoebe7165 05-26-2009, 01:38 PM I don't really cry when I listen to them, but it sure is sad when you know they're not alive anymore.
I feel that way listening to Queen, always thinking of Freddie. Same goes for INXS, thinking of Michael Huthence. Same goes for Pantera, thinking of Dimebag Darrell(his was such a SENSELESS death.)
catlover79 05-26-2009, 01:40 PM Yes, especially in the case of those who went young (Karen Carpenter, John Lennon, Andy Gibb, Freddie Mercury, and many more).
Jessica 05-26-2009, 01:42 PM Yeah. Queen were good.
phoebe7165 05-26-2009, 02:06 PM Andy Gibb
Yeah, everytime I listen to the Bee Gees, I always think of Maurice, too, and how the 3 of them will never sing together again, although Maurice wasn't as young as Andy when he died.
Jessica 05-26-2009, 03:29 PM True. Now only one of them still lives.
catlover79 05-26-2009, 03:39 PM Then you had Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye and many others who were lost due to suicide or homicide. People who had such enormous talent...it's just too sad. :(
phoebe7165 05-26-2009, 04:54 PM True. Now only one of them still lives.
Actually, not to nitpick, but Barry & Robin are still alive. Right before Andy's death though, he was going to join his brothers and the Bee Gees were going to be a quartet.
Jessica 05-26-2009, 04:58 PM Oo yer, you're right! I knew that. I was thinking about he Saturday Night Fever songs when they were 3.
Schmoopie 05-26-2009, 11:42 PM Also the Beatles. I've never really thought about it, but it's sad that two of the Fab Four are gone.
Jessica 05-27-2009, 11:13 AM Yeah
LuLu Rogers 05-28-2009, 02:30 AM Queen is my all time favorite band, so I often think of Freddie Mercury. It's hard to listen to Karen Carpenter sometimes as well :(
catlover79 05-28-2009, 08:28 AM Not to mention Selena, Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly, etc. :(
Dr. John Becker 05-28-2009, 12:14 PM In that case, it would be hard to listen to any classic rock station.
Led Zep (Bonzo)
Queen
THe Beatles
Jimi Hendrix
The Doors
All have members who have passed.
catlover79 05-28-2009, 01:36 PM ^ Not to mention The Who (Keith Moon).
Dr. John Becker 05-28-2009, 02:46 PM ^ Not to mention The Who (Keith Moon).
True, I don't know how I forgot them.
catlover79 05-28-2009, 03:42 PM True, I don't know how I forgot them.
Apparently, sometime during the 70s Keith Moon and Steve McQueen were next door neighbors. Keith drove Steve up the wall!! (I've read this in a couple of Steve McQueen biographies.)
Jessica 05-29-2009, 09:34 AM Ohhh!
BeavisandButthead 06-08-2009, 08:35 PM Surprised no mention of Lynyrd Skynyrd (Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines, Leon Wilkerson, and most recently Billy Powell)
So far of the entire group only four remain, Gary Rossington, Ed King, original drummer Bob Burns, and his replacement Artimus Pyle
But back to the original subject, no it doesn't quite bother me as much as you would think, me being quite the "music junkie" nonetheless.
Jessica 06-08-2009, 08:36 PM Yeah
BeavisandButthead 06-08-2009, 08:47 PM The current "Lynyrd Skynyrd" currently touring with Kid Rock doesn't do it for me. As far as I know LS died on October 20, 1977.
Jessica 06-08-2009, 08:50 PM Ohh, ok.

Jim Croce, Karen Carpenter, Laura Branigan, The Rat Pack
Vinyl Heaven
1) Working class pop singer/songwriter, Jim Croce. 2)Sweet and innocent pop music princess, Karn carpenter. 3) 80's pop music siren, Laura Branigan 4) Lounge music royalty, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Frank Sinatra
Although it might make me feel a little sad, the accomplishments of these and other singers are more important than a little sentiment.
BeavisandButthead 06-11-2009, 10:26 PM Another band that should be mentioned is Toto. Their drummer Jeff Porcaro died in 1992 at only 38.
OH Nuts! 06-17-2009, 06:57 AM I think I always feel at least a little sad when I listen to an artist that has passed but profoundly so when the artist died according to tragic cirumstances -for example: Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper, Buddy Holly, Jim Croce, Rick Nelson, Tammi Terrell.
isiahthomas 06-18-2009, 07:05 PM I miss Marvin Gaye, 2Pac, The Notorious Big, Eazy E, Big L, Freaky Tah of Lost Boys, Gerald and Sean Levert.
Dude111 01-15-2025, 11:23 PM No I dont think it makes me sad.. Im happy to remember them in a good way :)
80sTrivia 01-16-2025, 08:44 AM Sometimes, I'll find myself listening to a song and singing along before suddenly realizing the artist has passed. I was listening to Let's Dance by David Bowie a few weeks back and I had almost forgotten he had passed away for a moment or two. Same thing when I heard Last Christmas by Wham, then remembering George Michael died on Christmas Day in 2016.
Dude111 01-16-2025, 05:14 PM Yea its sad about George :(
JO Sweet Heart 01-16-2025, 09:58 PM For me, it depends on the song. On February 5th, it will be a year since we had to let go of Toby Keith. This past Christmas was our first without him, and for me, it wouldn't be Christmas without his music for the special occasion. His first Christmas album will be 30 years old later this year and, in my opinion, this song from the album is now the most challenging one to listen to and it is a song that he had a hand in writing. :crying: :crying: :crying:

God bless you and his family always!!!
Holly (a girl who will forever miss him)
P.S. I watched this video of his today because I love the song, but when I saw the ending of the clip, I could not keep it together. :crying: :crying: :crying:
