Although tvshowsondvd.com has not announced it yet, I have found the release date along with coverart and it is beautiful.

Can't wait to pick up this set! :)

Not to mention he's the prominent co-star for the last 3 seasons, esp after Desi Jr leaves.....

So Robert, were you the one who tipped off TVShowsonDVD.com? They said reader Rob.......so was that you??

That really is a beautiful photo for the cover -- certainly a nice choice in my opinion, though I too hope that Gale makes it on the later ones.

No, I'm afraid that wasn't me. I figured they just weren't ready to post the news yet...BUT I WAS! :D When I saw the listing at dvdempire.com, I had to let other Lucy fans know. I'm very excited about this release. I can't tell you how great it is to see too avatars (one under the other) with coverarts from the first season of each Lucy show to be released this summer!!! :happyface

I noticed this as well! Because he was also left off the cover of the "Best Loved Episodes" DVD, this strikes me as odd. He was, after all, the second-billed star on this series. Not including him on the cover seems like heresy.

When The Lucy Show was revamped to become Here's Lucy, there was much attention to the fact that her real life children were going to play her children on the show. That premise rather differentiated this show from the Lucy show. The cover with Lucy and her children seems appropriate for the first season set, as it defines the new format. I'm sure Gale Gordon/Harry will be on the next cover.

And let's not read more into this that what it is......a publicity shot because Lucy was excited to be working with her real childen. We saw her reinvigorated during those early seasons of HL--she seemed tired of the TLS format where it was constantly Mrs Carmichael vs Mooney with a big guest star thrown in. Here she was back in domestic situations, with her own kids. Sure they were still big name stars and Gale Gordon to spar with, but I truly believe the new format was good for Lucy's morale.

My question is not about what publicity photos Lucille Ball made back when Here's Lucy first launched -- in fact, I've seen some publicity photos she did at that time that included both her kids and Gale Gordon -- but why MPI (and previously, Shout! Factory) chose to use only photos that excluded Gale Gordon. And take a look at this 2006 Here's Lucy calendar: http://search4calendars.com/tv-shows/heres-lucy-2006-wall.html

It's full of pictures of Lucie and Desi Jr., but where's Gale Gordon? If all you knew about this show was based on this calendar and the DVD covers, you'd have no idea Gale Gordon was ever on this show.

This calendar and box art for the best loved episodes, reminds me of the contemporary merchandising for the Brady Bunch, excluding images of Robert Reed. I thought that was strange, but have since learned from this board that his estate does not authorize his images on these products.

Well, I can't answer for Shout or MPI, but I don't think for a first season release, it's that big a deal. however, if the second season release doesn't include him, then that's grounds for a big stink party! But hey cover art is just that-- I AM HAPPY THIS SHOW IS FINALLY COMING OUT AT ALL!!!!!!!

also the cover art was slightly modified to read "season one" and the blue balloons dropped in favor of simple text near the bottom.

I just received my review copy of Here's Lucy from MPI, and as was the case with The Lucy Show, I think that fans are once again going to be very pleased with what we have here. The episode introductions are all very nicely done and there are even syndication promos for every single episode on the set! A full review should be online as soon as possible (hopefully sometime this weekend).

Probably not, but I can't say for sure. I've heard that a lot of MPI releases actually show up in SOME retail stores (such as FYE or Suncoast) weeks before they are released, but they really aren't supposed to. I don't think MPI is as strict about the whole release date business as the big guys are. I only got it early because they always send copies out to reviewers as far in advance as possible.

I hope this is a good set. I have purchased a couple of DVD sets that MPI released and I am not that thrilled with MPI. The episodes are not always crisp and clear, but my biggest issue with MPI is they have some of the most bizarre, difficult-to-follow menu layouts. Too bad this series is not being issued by CBS/Paramount....they did an outstanding job with "The Lucy Show".

I'm not sticking up for MPI, but sometimes it depends on the quality of the source material for the quality of the picture on the DVDs. I've been happy with the MPI discs I have purchased, though.

Before CBS took over The Beverly Hillbillies, MPI released two BH, dvd collections. From what I understand they used material directly from Paul Henning's estate. The picture quality was superb, and I liked everything with it. So I'm confident MPI will do a good job with Here's Lucy!

I will expect no less from this set. The review posted here a day or two ago confirms this: http://www.sitcomsonline.com/hereslucyseason1dvdreview.html

Moreover, the entire series was already remastered several years ago and has been well cared for. Additionally, as with the season one The Lucy Show set, the people involved in this DVD set are big Lucy fans. They're putting a lot of care into these releases.

I was thinking of the recent releases of the color episodes of The Jackie Gleason Show with the musical Honeymooners included. For 40 year old video tape the quality of the shows was fantastic. I think with the Hillbillies releases they used the Henning estates 16mm copies (I believe this is what I read, but I am not 100%) and while I do not own these I have borrowed them from my library. The picture quality was very good, maybe not as sharp as 35mm but still very watchable, very enjoyable, and the shows were complete as well!

MPI has a record of releasing complete shows, securing music rights (as far as I know) which to me is impressive because when a small company like that does that, it makes a larger company like CBS look plain lazy and cheap. I was so thrilled that with the first season of The Lucy Show all the music was included (was worried about the "Big Girls Don't Cry" song rights) so I hope they keep up that trend! As for MPI, they also released all of the "lost" episodes of The Honeymooners and did a pretty good job considering that those were kinescopes.

Something I've been wondering about is why aren't music rights an issue when these shows are aired in reruns on TV, but they suddenly are an issue when they're released on DVD? Watch an episode of WKRP on TV and all the music's there (I suppose, though I haven't seen it on TV in years), but on DVD, it's completely gone.

I think part of it (or maybe all of it, or maybe I'm 100% wrong on this) is that on TV you're seeing the show for free. The station has paid for the right to broadcast the show, and rights have been paid for the use of that music to be used in broadcasts. When you purchase a DVD of a series, you're also purchasing that music that is included for your own personal use. I know, it sounds dumb and it's probably all a bunch of legal mumbo jumbo stuff. This is just what I understand it to be from what info I have read and gathered. Not only that but the person who owns the rights to the song will also be entitled to royalty and rights for the use of the music. I think some of the studios are just too cheap to pay it out.

MPI also released Family Affair and The Doris Day Show. Has anybody checked these shows out? Once they commit to a series, they complete it, how many other companies do that?

The DVD set is currently up to 348th place on Amazon's list of all movies and TV shows on DVD. The Lucy Show Season One made it as high as 95th place. So it will be interesting to see how close this one gets to that marker.

Well it depends do you live in the sticks or a big city? I live in the country and I could not find Here's Lucy at any retail stores near me. I thought for sure Walmart would have it as they have The Lucy Show DVD set.but I was wrong.
Well I went down to the St.Louis area this mourning and I searched down there.Went into a Target-No luck. Then I check Borders-No luck. Then I went into a Best Buy and I thought I struck out again as I did not see it anywheres. So I was walking towards the exit when one of the workers in the store asked me If I needed any help.Well I told the girl I been searching every where for Here's Lucy season 1 set. So she went on the computer and the computer told her they had 2 in stuck. So she check the whole TV section, but she could not find it. So then she decided to go check in the back.5 minutes later she came back with Here's Lucy season 1 in her hand. I was so excited. So of course I bought it. So glad that my week long search had finaly ended. But gush I could of had it days ago if I just orderd the darn set from Amazon. But how should I know it was going to be hard to find. I thought it was going to be just like The Lucy Show season 1 set as I have scene it everywhere. But anyways I think for hard to find TV DVD sets you would have better luck if you live in or near a big city. But if you live in the sticks like me dont even bother just order it online.

I've been enjoying season 1 of Here's Lucy this holiday weekend. To be honest, I never quite knew what to expect because most of what has been written about the series has been on the negative side. While I do agree that the "man in the bear" custume and spy story episodes do seem a bit much, on the whole it has been a very enjoyable show! It reminds me a lot of earlier episodes of The Lucy Show before the move to California. I'm very excited to get the remaining seasons on DVD, I've heard where the series seems to get better with each passing season. I'm just looking forward to the 4th season when Bob Carroll, Jr. and Madelyn Davis are back writing about a 3rd of the remaining episodes. (Though they did write the 3rd season episode with Richard and Liz.)

(Though they did write the 3rd season episode with Richard and Liz.)

The thing about Bob and Madelyn is their scripts were always rooted in reality (no men in bear suits) and had a logical progression, and they made Lucy's character seem three dimensional. They wrote one-third of the scripts during seasons 4-6. During that period, the best scripts were usually written either by them or by Bob O'Brien, who also wrote a third of the scripts during those years. The remaining third were written by other (lesser) writers and were often weak. Comparing seasons 1-3 to 4-6, I think the later seasons had an advantage in that the scripts tended to be more realistic (thanks in large part to Bob and Madelyn's influence); however, with Desi Arnaz, Jr's absence during those seasons, the family dynamic was often missing and with it, a certain energy level. My favorite seasons, overall, are 2-3. My least favorite is season 4 (the Helen Hayes, Candid Camera, Jungle, and "Lucy's Lucky Day" episodes, for example, were horrible). However, season 6, though not my favorite season overall, has a larger number of my individual personal favorite episodes than any other individual season; there were also a lot of mediocre episodes in season 6, but none were horrible like in season 4. For different reasons, the series was a mixed bag throughout, with both bright spots and low points.

I have seen very, very few episodes of this series, so all these are all brand new to me. Also, I'm shocked at how much I enjoy Bob O'Brien's scipts on HL because on The Lucy Show I did not seem to care much for them. Must be the family situations!

Lucie Arnaz said it best that her mom shined when she was involved in the domestic situations. The episode with Shelley Winters might as well have been a leftover from the sixth season of The Lucy Show--the kids are not it and once again, Lucy interacts with a big star that has no real relation to who or what Lucy is and does all the other times. it's not a stinker per se, but it is just an example that the "Lucy meets A BIG Star!" routine was overdone and relied on a tad too often. Sometimes it does work such as "Lucy Meets Jack Benny"--I enjoy that one and never tire of it.
As much ballyhooed is "Lucy Meets the Burtons"--I don't particularly care for it, esp in light of Richard Burton's nasty comments about Lucy in his auto-bio.

I hear what you're saying. Bob O'Brien is an interesting one. I find that I either love or hate his scripts. He wrote some of my least favorite episodes from TLS. He also wrote some of my favorites. But by the later years of HL, IMO, he generally put out good material for her.
