Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones in 1969, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin in 1970, Doors frontman Jim Morrison in 1971 and Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobian in 1994. All five of them were rock stars who died at the age of 27. Who's death was the greatest loss for Rock music?

For me it was Jim Morrison. The love the Doors. The Doors were the first thinking man's hard rock band. Morrison's lyrics were meant not simply to entertain but to teach. He wanted his audiance to reflect on life, death, the world, everything. He was also a great frontman.

The death of Brian Jones was a tragedy, but the Stones brought in Mick Taylor and were better than ever. I like Nirvana and was saddened by Cobian's death, but I've never been a huge fan. I've never had any interst in Hendrix and Joplin at all.

They werent 27 when they passed but I think Otis Redding and Sam Cooke should be added to this list.

Of the list above I will go with both Jimi Hendrix and Brian Jones mainly because I found them to be extremly talended musicians and could have went on to do more.

No offense but I am no fan of the Doors, Nirvana or Janis Joplin.

I'm not a fan of Janis Joplin either. With the exception of one or two of her songs, I have heard almost nothing of her music. I like Nirvana, though I do think they were overrated. I think Cobian was a good, honest songwriter and I really like their album, Nevermind.

The Doors, on the other hand, are one of my all time favorite bands. Their music is amazing, powerful and timeless. They recorded only six albums and five of them are either great or all time classics. Whenever I play their albums and hear songs like "Light My Fire", "Break On Through" and "Riders On The Storm", I still get the same feeling that I got when I was in high school. It's like an adrenaline rush!

Did any of them die at age 27? With the exception of Randy Rhoads, I don't know who any of them are. I'm pretty sure Randy was younger than 27 when he died.

That's funny because I spent my life thinking Joe Cocker was dead, lol. I was quite surprised when only a few months ago, I found out he was still living. It's when I saw "Across the Universe" and he was in it.

For this thread, I'm 27 and it's weird thinking about them dying at my age. Mainly because they've accomplished something and had fame, where I just work at Kroger and sit around either watching TV or getting online. To be honest, I didn't know any of them were 27 when they died. They all seemed older to me.

I'll go with either Jim Morrison or Janis Joplin. I like a couple of her songs, and I have a cd compliation of The Doors. The others, I've not paid much attention to.

You know I also used to think that Joe Cocker was dead.. I think I got him confused with Jim Croce.. Yay another blond moment for me.

Because Randy Rhoads died at 25, Cliff Burton 24, Criss Oliva 30 and DimeBag Darrell at 38.

I voted for Janis Joplin because I think she was a pioneer for women in rock. When I think of all these musicians who died way to young it makes me want to say "take another little piece of my heart now baby"

Jim Morrison gets my vote. I love the Door's music, and I think he was a cutie. It's really something that they were all 27.

Why no Randy Rhoads, Cliff Burton, Criss Oliva, or Dimebag Darrell??

Because, unfortunately those 4 are not as well-known(well, maybe Randy is) as Jimi, Janis, etc. Well, you & I both know who they all are and their deaths, too, were a great loss to the music world. To me, though, everybody's premature death is a tragedy, but when one dies in an accident or is murdered, I think that's a bit more tragic, than doing damage to your own body and dying from that.

I'm sure I'll have people pissed at me for saying that, but sorry, that's the way I feel.

I think they're all tragic, but I think Cobain's was the most tragic for me. I think anytime a death happens by suicide, it's especially sad. That dude had alot of problems going on in his mind, and also suffered physically with a horrible back problem if I recall correctly. From everything I just mentioned, to his suicide note, I just think his death was extremely tragic.

I'd have to go with Hendrix.

He changed the face of guitar rock and rock and roll itself to a degree.

He would have constantly evolved while being one the greatest guitarists and innovators of all time.

The one thing I've noticed about these artists in the poll is that when they died, they had pretty much peaked musically a while before, and then it was all downhill. I remember reading that when Jimi Hendrix played his last concert a few weeks before he died, he felt that his music was losing its impact, that he had lived his life in vain if his music would no longer hold interest. The time he died was when the hippie era was quickly becoming a thing of the past, and that people were moving on (also think of the Altamont incident). Of course, this certainly was not the case, people regard him as the greatest guitarist of all time, which he was and is, but even toward the end of his life, he even had his own doubts about himself. He was tired, burned out, and pretty much felt like he had given up.

I voted for Kurt Cobain. I was 13 when Nirvana released "Nevermind," and I was hooked immediately. My friend and I called MTV over and over everyday to request they play "Smells Like Teen Spirit."

I was sooo upset when I learned Kurt was dead. I think I was in 10th grade. I'm 35 now and I still love Nirvana as much as ever. I even got my mom hooked on their music several years ago.
