Ms Thomas was pleasant, not unattractive, and funny sometimes

Isabel was not always pleasant on The Jeffersons. I am not going to continue with the whole attractive thing because I do not watch a sitcom based on a person’s looks. If I were to do that, I would have missed out on a lot of great TV shows.
Mama had her funny moments, I thought that she was a sweet woman. She had every right to put down Clifton’s friends because they weren't worth much and they were in her house. I don't think that Clifton was stiff I believe that he stayed himself throughout the whole show, he was more mature than the rest of the men on the show.

Brieannas21 05-17-2009, 11:40 PM I thought the episode that you were talking about was when Clifton's cousin comes to visit. But when I looked at it she didn't call him a failure. So what was the episode about where she calls him a failure?

When she was asking why he didn't turn out like some guy who had a nice car and nice job. If my mom said that me I would have quickly ran to disrespectful avenue-lol

Well I just looked at the episode where Clifton said that he didn't know if he believed in God and she didn't call him a failure in that episode.
Do you remember what the plot of the episode was about?

I think the Guy was Tracy's boyfriend
Brieannas21 05-18-2009, 02:19 PM I think the Guy was Tracy's boyfriend
In one episode she was asking him why he wasn't trying to settle down, get married, and that he should go to so that he could get a better job. Also she was talking about either her nephew who had a big car and lots of money or it was her son-in-law. But she never called him a failure. In the one episode where her nephew came to town she apologized to him for trying to compare him with his cousin.

Too mean? She was not mean. She was no meaner than Florida or Mrs. Thomas.
The episode that you are referring to, she wasn't being mean. She was just commenting on the things that her nephew had. She was just being a mother.
Scan that story and post it, I want to read it LOL

Yes a little better on Amen and we work in the same building now. I work on the 7th floor and he works on the 8th. I met him at the Hot dog Cart about 5 years ago-lol

Something having to do with Religion so that maybe the TBN thing.

It's like a "Christian Tonight Show" where Clifton interviews guests. I've seen a few episodes of it on YouTube - not bad!
Sonny Carson 04-07-2012, 06:12 PM I actually liked the first season of That's My Mama. There were some funny moments like The Honesty Day episode.
Tracy: Why did you really want to marry me Leonard?
Leonard: Your Body!
Tracy: What do you mean my body?
Leonard: Yes Body, B-O-D-Y!
Tracy: What about my mind?
Leonard:That was fine but that wasn't your mind popping out of your bikini!
Mama: You got a lot of nerve talking about my daughter that way.
Leonard: What I mean is that I had to be hooked by her looks!
Mama: You got alot of nerve callin my daughter a HOOKER!
The original Leonard who said those quotes was solid too, I don't know why they replaced him. The second season of That's My Mama was plain bad and featured a number of cringe worthy moments. Mostly by the "second" Leonard who got a bigger role. The best thing about both seasons of the show was Ted Lange as Junior. He cracked me up when he asked Clifton "Was That your Mama I saw floatin down the street, or a gigantic doily".
Sonny Carson 04-07-2012, 06:14 PM Oh and them replacing Tracy was a dumb move too!
TVFactFan 04-07-2012, 08:56 PM The only highlight of this show was JUNIOR

Stereo-typing?
megamanj2004 05-27-2012, 04:04 AM IMO, this show failed b/c:
1). The theme song change in S2
2). The production team also changed.
3). Switching Tracys
4). Earl became dumber than before. In S1 he wasn't as buffoon-ish as he was in S2.

I guess they were trying to make the show more family like and make the mother more sweet which was the tone of the season 2 theme song
McGillicuddy 05-27-2012, 12:12 PM Stereo-typing?
Well, why is Mrs. Curtis (Mama) being compared to Weezy Jefferson, Florida Evans and "Mama" Mable Thomas? Are they all supposed to be similar because they happen to be African-American, rather buxom or heavy-set, and are mothers. There IS no comparision with the character of Louise Jefferson and the character of "Mama" Eloise Curtis. The storyline with The Jeffersons was not about Weezy being Lionel's mother. Where as, That's My Mama, is about Mrs. Curtis being a mother figure not just to her own children, but to all of their friends.
I don't know, but I would think "Mama" Thelma Harper on Mama's Family would be more of a comparision to Mrs. Curtis than those other 3.
Maybe "stereo-typing" isn't intentional here, but I don't understand why these four characters/actresses are being stereo-typically catagorized together.
And what does Theresa Merritt's physical appearance have to do with anything? She wasn't supposed to be sexy! I just started watching TMM, and am enjoying it. Personally I think Ms. Merritt's character is hilarious and fun!

Of course she is going to be compared to Florida, Weezy, and Mrs. Thomas because
1. They were black shows
2. They all aired during the same time
Now I guess a better comparison would be Mrs. Thomas since she was a single mother whose son had 2 friends come to the house all the time and hung out at the barbershop like the guys on What's Happening hung out at the soda shop. Plus Both woman had two kids which was a son and daughter
ThomasE 07-22-2012, 12:58 AM I thought the show was fine the way it was. I liked the season two theme song. I just wished Lynne wasn't replaced with Joan. She seemd to be a bit older than the Clifton character and the other Tracy was supposed to be younger.

This show's problem was the main character were dull. That wasn't the case on the other black shows
Sanford and Son....Fred and Lamont
The Jeffersons......George and Weezy
Good Times........James and Florida
That's My Mama.........."Clifton and his Mother:confused:

What did you like about it? Clifton Davis is such a bore. His dryness was overshadowed by Sherman Hemsley on Amen so it wasn't that noticeable. But on That;s my Mama he was boring and so was his mother
Only the mailman and Junior kept the show somewhat watchable

I liked the show period, I liked the interaction between Clifton and his mom, Clifton and Earl. Junior really didn't do much for me, maybe it's because he didn't have that many lines and he was always in and out. The one person I could have done without was Leonard. I loved the first Leonard they had, he fit in more I think.

Please, no one is trying to buy TMM unless it's a ABC episode with commercials.
Plus the DVD was edited. I was reading a Jet magazine and there is a scene from a episode in the Jet that I never saw on the DVD. I still saw the same lady but not the way she was shown in the jet

ITA , Junior was that tag character that most tv shows have that viewers talk about. He was like extra icing. Leonard was okay with me. Geeky he played well.
DavidDMI 12-07-2013, 06:29 AM There are some funny moments on this show, but I don't think this show was very good.It was mediocre.Great cast, but the writing wasn't consistently good. The other day,I was watching one of the episodes in Season Two.The characters were on a road trip to a wedding, they got lost and had to stay in a run-down hotel for the night. On paper, this *sounds* like it would be a great episode but the episode was silly and unfunny.
ThomasE 12-07-2013, 09:35 AM I saw that episode when they were driving to Philadelphia. I've had it since I was 12 years. My local affiliate WFTS 28 in Tampa was airing it. I thought it was a good episode. The show, I guess was mediocre but I still liked it. I thought that season two did lose a few points. Some season one elements were missing. It's almost like TV ONE's "Love that girl". Since Tatyana Ali left, her presence to me is missed. I like the character "Imunique" but she is better as a side character and Tatyana's character "Tiana" needs to be there.

I actually thought that the episode where they were on the road trip was the best episode of the second season. Of course it's not saying much because Season Two is not good!
