View Full Version : My Review of My Little Margie
MickeyMac 05-11-2009, 08:19 PM I just got a chance to see this show after many years. I have to say its enjoyable and wholesome, but its a bit on the hokey side. Margie schemes to help her dad out and benefit herself at the same time (kinda like what Lucy tried to do for Ricky), but her plans always backfire(just like Lucy's). Gale Storm is good but I thought the other actors on this show had a limited range.
Overall its a decent show that was popular in its day and kinda forgotten now. Its not the best show from the 50's but if anyone is into TV shows from that era I would say My Little Margie is worth watching.
vedastone 05-16-2009, 02:09 AM It can be a fun show. Some of the minor characters are entertaining too, like Freddie and Mrs. Odetts. Margie's antics can be obnoxious at times, she's always meddling where she shouldn't be, but then "that's my little Margie".
Jude The Obscure 05-17-2009, 06:56 PM I haven't seen this since the days it played on the old CBN Cable Network.

Me too.
TV_on_the_Porch 05-17-2009, 10:55 PM I've seen it very sporadically here and there since then. Somehow it seems an awful lot of episodes were produced considering it ran just barely over 3 years.
Of all the shows from the old CBN lineup (oh! how I miss that) it was probably the most broadly played and cartoonish. It almost seemed like a throwback to the movie shorts of the 30s and 40s, it has much more the "feel" of such productions than of its contemporary TV series.
It could indeed be fun, but unless you watched an episode from the beginning you'd be lost as to what was going on and why.
And Margie's trademark (think Lucy's "spider face") was a throaty gurgle which was not that cute and used much too often.
Jude The Obscure 05-18-2009, 01:19 AM I would love to see an episode of Gale Storm's followup sitcom, The Gale Storm Show aka Oh, Susanna!

There was also a popular radio version that ran at the same time (1952-1955), with the same cast in different episodes.
Jude The Obscure 05-18-2009, 10:05 AM ^Really?? I'll have to see if those are available! I'm really enjoying old time radio shows--having been the runs of My Favorite Husband and Father Knows Best. I'm now into The Aldrich Family.

The radio series began on Dec. 7, 1952 and ran until June 26, 1955, on CBS
(sponsored by Philip Morris). It also ran on the Mutual network from 1953 to
1954. I bought an episode from Radio Yesteryear, back in the 1980s. You
might also try Radio Spirits. They also carry an extensive list of radio shows.
MickeyMac 05-18-2009, 07:48 PM Interesting thing is that the character of Margie was in her early 20's. When the show was on the air, Gale Storm was at least in her early 30's.
Jude The Obscure 05-18-2009, 10:01 PM Thanks TVStar, I'll look into it. Might see if some are available at the Old Time Radio website-- my g/f got me some of my stuff through them.
MickeyMac 05-19-2009, 05:19 PM If you watch the show its obvious the writers were inspired by I Love Lucy
Jude The Obscure 05-19-2009, 10:14 PM Several shows from the 50s and 60s were said to be inspired/ripping off Lucy.

They have episodes of the tv show and radio show. You can watch or listen to online. :)
Jude The Obscure 05-20-2009, 06:16 PM Thanks Clarence.....
although i'm still interested in getting the radio show on CD/mp3 since I listen to old radio shows in my car.
Coffeecup 02-25-2018, 12:00 PM I have seen a few episodes on DECADES and found the show a bit flat. Not enough suspense for me.
Hazel Anyday 02-26-2018, 12:41 AM The good news just recently Season 1 of this series became available commercially. Though there aren't a lot of episodes in season 1, I hope the rest of the series will be released too. I'd like to buy a Complete Series set of this.
OK, back to the question, I find this show quite funny. It is played broad and overboard even. This is one of those shows played strictly for laughs and classic laughs at that. Like Sgt. Bilko or Car 54, it's all out played for laughs, not in the least a "dramedy". I like this show and especially like the old bag who plays Margie's apt. neighbor, she reminds me of Stan Laurel when she talks, the same mannerisms.
As to this TV series reminding someone above like comedy film shorts, it's interesting that comment, because this series was filmed on the "Lotta Fun" that's the Hal Roach Studios where Laurel & Hardy and Little Rascals were filmed years earlier.
Now, to me the only negative about this series is they seem to re-do the same plot technique over and over again, this is how it goes in most all of the episodes. Margie wants something, pulls an elaborate trick on her father to get it, Father then discovers the trick she's pulling and pulls a counter-trick on Margie who then discovers his counter-trick and pulls a counter-trick to teach him. By this time the 1/2 hour is over and no more tricks are played till the next episode. Now the idea of pulling a trick is good once in a while or even several times but the trick-counter-trick-counter counter trick really was just way too much esp. when repeated episode after episode. I still would like to see this whole series, it is funny once you get over the same plot tricks ploy in every episode.
someguy23475 09-30-2020, 11:54 PM I haven’t seen an episode in roughly 20 years, when it aired on the now defunct AIN (which was mainly seen on low power over the air stations, in case you’d never heard of it). I don’t recall much about it, so it didn’t leave an impression unlike I Married Joan and Private Secretary (Susie).
