View Full Version : What was the best era of MASH?
Chocoholic 05-11-2009, 11:48 AM I split MASH into three eras: the early years (1-3), the middle years, (4-7) and the later years (8-11). I think the early years are by far the best. The middle years are still pretty good, but I don't care for the later years at all.
Dog Tags 05-11-2009, 01:43 PM Couldn't agree more on the changes through the years. Anyone who has either seen the movie or better yet, read the book will appreciate the fun of the first 3 seasons. The changing of the guard with the loss of Stevenson and Rogers brought a new 'feel' to the writing and direction we were being taken in this series. It went from a light hearted, fun to watch program to a Sunday sermon with Rev. Alda guiding his flock. At least Pvt. Charles Lamb knew when to get out ! :D
Miss Lisa 05-11-2009, 08:52 PM First three seasons. I was and still am a huge fan of the movie and like the earlier episodes of the show. I still like the later seasons, but after Radar left, I pretty much lost interest. The only episode that I do like is Dreams, but that's only because I'm a little weird. But other then that, the show lost a lot after Stevenson and Rogers left.
LuLu Rogers 05-12-2009, 02:28 AM Do you even have to ask? ;)
Chocoholic 05-12-2009, 03:09 PM ^ The BJ years, Lauren? ;)

hahaha No! ;)
Yooch 05-12-2009, 05:13 PM All were good, but I'd say the middle years were best, because they had the best balance between comedy and more serious themes.
steevo 05-16-2009, 01:49 PM I liked the entire series, but seasons 1-3 were the best. The comedy/drama mix was the most effective.

A lot of the comedy came from the tension among the characters in the first few seasons. When the cast changed, that was lost.
Doug-oh 06-06-2017, 10:57 PM First three for me, for sure.
BJ, Potter & Charles were good, but the first three seasons were comedic genius which set the bar high.
gopyle 06-06-2017, 11:24 PM The first three are easily the best seasons.
PracTz 06-07-2017, 01:03 PM I think from Potter's Arrival to Radar's Departure. Yeah, Col. Blake was a lovable goof but the Swamp Rats as well as Frank+Margaret truly needed someone to corral and referee them as opposed to have someone to walk all over then get righteous when the 'other side' would do the very same thing.

I dont really because they mocked the movie, especially when the laughter was added.... THERE IS NOTHING FUNNY ABOUT WAR!!!
I didnt realise until recently that the movie MASH was the original idea....I just ordered it and am waiting for it to arrive..... I do wanna see that...
Adamantium 09-09-2017, 07:26 AM Seeing as my favorite characters are Henry Blake and Frank Burns, I'm gonna go with the early years. ;)
Dude111 09-09-2017, 10:08 AM Hmm that is interesting!!!
AMackII 10-11-2018, 11:57 AM All Seasons were good but i prefer the later years in which Klinger surprisingly no longer dresses in drag once Radar left.
Heenan Fan 01-15-2019, 10:41 PM Another vote for the early years from me. Not even close.
