View Full Version : Anyone Remember The Midnight Special?
howilu 05-10-2009, 03:43 PM I caught part of an infomercial for The Best of the Midnight Special on DVD last night and I was wondering if anyone remembers the pioneering late-late-night music show that featured many recording acts over its eight year run. The show also featured Helen Reddy as host for a couple of seasons and as the show's announcer (and sometimes host) Wolfman Jack.
MickeyMac 05-10-2009, 03:47 PM I do
I would say that show was hit or miss. Sometimes they would have great acts and sometimes it would be a dull show. In some areas the show didnt air until 1am.
catlover79 05-10-2009, 03:59 PM It left the air before I was born but I have seen bits and pieces of it on YouTube. Pretty cool stuff.
TripperFan 05-10-2009, 04:53 PM Yup - I remember it for sure! Used to come home late and turn it on as well as Don Kershner's Rock Concert. I remember seeing Rod Stewart on it performing "Tonight's The Night" from Night On The Town.

steevo 05-10-2009, 10:16 PM That was a great show. Anyone who was anyone in music did a stint on that show. The performances were energetic.
Howilu, I saw that same informercial and it bought back memories.
Jude The Obscure 05-10-2009, 10:59 PM Yep, sure do!

You're welcome, Ann - I had fun watching them, too. :D
Retro4Life 05-15-2009, 08:04 PM I do indeed remember it. My older brother watched it a lot, and while I wasn't always familiar with the performers, this was the 70s, where, uhm...there wasn't anything else on (literally) after midnight! :)
Dr. Thong 05-15-2009, 08:04 PM Although I was around when it aired, I didn't really take notice of it until a syndicated version was attempted around 1982. It was a half-hour highlights show. It may have been called Best Of The Midnight Special.
I have seen some clips on bootleg DVDs and you tube. From what I can see, some of the shows were pretty eclectic in the way they mixed and matched musical guests and genres.
catlover79 05-15-2009, 08:29 PM The Midnight Special sounds more like the title of a porno, but maybe I just have that kind of mind. :o
Retro4Life 05-15-2009, 09:34 PM Don't give the "Not The..." people any ideas!! :)

I enjoyed seeing the clips of TMS myself. I actually grew up on Solid Gold.

Great clips! I'm a big Journey fan. Billy Joel is another favorite of mine.
Dr. Thong 05-16-2009, 10:50 AM I enjoyed seeing the clips of TMS myself. I actually grew up on Solid Gold.
I remember when it premiered, Fall 1980. Dionne Warwick was the host.
"And here they/he/she are, performing their/his/her solid gold hit..."
MickeyMac 05-16-2009, 01:59 PM The Midnight Special sounds more like the title of a porno, but maybe I just have that kind of mind. :o
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
The title comes from a song called "The Midnight Special"
MickeyMac 05-16-2009, 02:01 PM Yeah I have to admit I was brought up on Solid Goldtoo. I was never too big on it, but its fun to watch the clips on Youtube for nostalgia and to see at times that show could be pretty cheesy.
I do remember The Midnight Special though.
catlover79 05-16-2009, 04:02 PM I never saw Dionne host Solid Gold. I've only seen the Marilyn McCoo-hosted eps, since she was on the longest. I also remember seeing the likes of Air Supply, Laura Branigan and Sheena Easton perform on the show. According to the book Marilyn co-wrote with her husband, Billy Davis, Jr. (called Up, Up and Away), one of the contenders she beat out for the SG gig was Gladys Knight. The producers liked the chemistry between Marilyn and her first co-host Andy Gibb.
Getting back to The Midnight Special, when is this DVD supposed to come out? I'd love to watch it.
Dr. Thong 05-16-2009, 05:47 PM I remember when Andy Gibb hosted Solid Gold. Unfortunately, he wasn't on very long because of his drug and alcohol problems.

Plus he wouldn't show up for tapings at all. Not long after, he got fired from his stage role as Joseph in the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
MickeyMac 05-17-2009, 02:43 PM I watched that show too long LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
I remember when Dionne Warwick, Marilyn McCoo, Andy Gibb, and Rex Smith were hosts.
Dr. Thong 05-17-2009, 05:41 PM I watched that show too long LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
I remember when Dionne Warwick, Marilyn McCoo, Andy Gibb, and Rex Smith were hosts.
It was on so long that Dionne Warwick, who was fired as host after the first season, returned to host it several years later.

After that, didn't Marilyn McCoo replace her (again)??

I don't know. I don't think I was watching it by that point, Cat.
I realized I had better taste in music or something.:D
Retro4Life 05-17-2009, 06:35 PM "Solid Gold, filling up my life with music,
Solid Gold, putting rhythm in my soul.
There's a song that's unreelin',
That fits the way that I'm feelin',
My head keeps spinnin' to music,
Spinnin' to gold!
Solid gold!!"
(apologies for any errors, it's incredible/funny/scary how I recall that theme after not seeing the show for probably 25 years).
Jude The Obscure 05-17-2009, 07:27 PM Here's the order--Dionne, Marilyn, then Marilyn with co hosts, andy gibb and rex smith, then Rick Dees (yes, him!), then back to Dionne, then back to Marilyn.

Thank you, Jude - didn't Jeff Altman also make occasional appearances??

 Reminds me of when we went to Vegas. Wayland and Madame were playing the Sands hotel. When my brother called for tickets, they said, "I'm sorry, but the show has been cancelled for tonight....Wayland AND Madame aren't feeling well". It struck my bro funny when she included Madame. It made him ask if she had termites!!!

"The Best of The Midnight Special" was at least 52 weeks/episodes of ad supported hour-long compilations - they were not cut-downs, they were new compilations for syndication versions with a new announcer (NOT Wolfman Jack) Syndicated by 20th Century Fox Television in 1982-1983, unknown if it got a second season or not - there was MORE than enough material.
