Oh wow. I am in complete shock. Ever since I was a kid I've been a fan of hers. I loved watching Maude and I loved her on the Golden Girls. She is a true TV legend. This is just horrible. Rest in peace Bea. :(

NO ONE did put-downs like Bea. I'd crown her and Abe Vigoda as the sitcom King & Queen of Deadpan. They wouldn't have to move a muscle and the audience would be rolling!!

How very sad indeed. Bea was a comedic genius. I watched Maude during its original run. My mother watched The Golden Days every afternoon. She will be missed. :(

"Cousin Maude's Visit" is one of my favorite episodes of All in the Family. Maude has some great lines in that episode. She really knew how to put Archie in his place. The debate between Archie and Maude over who was a better president, FDR or Richard Nixon, is priceless.

RIP Bea

God Bless you, Bea Arthur. What an amazing life, two very successful television shows, and she lived to be 86 years old..:) Instead of being sadden about her death, we should embrace her life, for it was very long and very rewarding!

I couldn't believe it when I heard it. My mom told me. She asked if I heard who died, and I was praying that it wasn't one of the Golden Girls. Sadly, it was. It is so crazy that two of the four girls are already gone. It hit me hard tonight, realizing that these amazing women aren't going to be around forever. She will be missed by so many! RIP Bea.

Bea's death also made me realize that the cast of GG isn't going to be around forever. Betty and Rue seem to be in good health but we never know what will happen. Bea kept her illness private and many are in shock over her death.

On Today Show this morning they had a segment of Bea Arthur on "The Golden Girls" which Rue was on the phone talking to the Today crew from NY. They had some clipping of Maude, Golden Girls, & Mame.

Aww - that's so beautiful and simple but says so much.

I didn't hear the news until the late news last night. I had no idea she had cancer. Again, what class to keep it secret and go out with her privacy and dignity.

Not only will I always remember her as both Maude and Dorothy, but still picture her at the awards show with that seal. Again, like Monika said, no one could do deadpan "drop dead" looks like she could.

I fell asleep last night thinking of her now with Sophia in heaven (and driving each other lovingly nuts up there). :)

Goodnight Sweet Bea. :(

She will be missed.

Now Maude is in Heaven asking Archie Bunker who's the best president...FDR or Nixon...right in front of FDR and Nixon.

Also, her role in "Mame" will still be etched in my mind for awhile.

Unfortunately I never saw her in that. I've only watched the Rosiland Russell version (which I adore). I just read this morning about her in Mame. I figured she would have played Mame, but she played Vera!!!! LOL It would be weird seeing her playing a drunk.

Bea always came across to me as fiercely protective of her privacy, so it does not surprise me she would keep her illness secret. It reminds me of Elizabeth Montgomery keeping her cancer secret as well.

Rest In Peace Bea.

There have been Actors/Actresses over the years who have kept there Cancer a Secret. Roxie Roker(The Jefferson) is a good Example. I can Understand why some people would want to keep it a secret.

Exactly. One of my co-workers recently passed away, and only a select few knew she had cancer until after she died. She didn't want anyone to know. I can totally understand.

Betty is the oldest of the four - just turned 87 in January, so I have no doubt in my mind that she'll make it to 90 because, well, she's Betty. :) And Rue is just a few years younger than my grandma so I would say for sure she'll be around for quite a while longer.

I've been so busy lately... I haven't even had the time to sit down to watch a GG episode or two. It's gonna be tough watching GG now, knowing mother and daughter are both gone. :(

It will be hard for me to watch the show too. I started to watch an episode this morning on Hallmark but I ended up falling back to sleep. I got sad immediately when the opening credits started. Betty seems to be in good health. It doesn't seem like she is 87. I think Rue will be around for awhile too.

For sure. When I was diagnosed, I kept it to myself, and only let Frank know until I knew what I was dealing with. I didn't let my employer know or anyone outside of the family. I've still downplayed a lot of it to my family. I didn't want them going through too much of it because I know what it does to family members. Had mine been terminal, I don't think I would have told many people other than my closest of friends - and then, only near the end to say goodbye. I'd rather people remember me funny and full of life as I'm sure Bea did. Apparently she had cancer for quite a long time too.

I'm glad she had privacy to the end and went with dignity.

Whenever a celebrity dies, my sister & I play this little game. Whoever finds out about the death first, plays 20 questions to the other and the other tries to figure out who it is. It was my turn to guess this time. I asked "Was she on a show that we watch", and she replied, "That's the really sad thing about this death is that she was on a show that we watch".

Just the other day, I was watching "History of the World Part 1". Bea has a small part in that movie as the umemployment lady. I love the scene between her & Mel Brooks.

She asks him "Occupation?"
He replies "Stand-up philosopher"
Bea: "What?"
Mel: "Stand-up philosopher"
Bea: "Oh, you mean a bullsh*t artist!"

Loved Bea, and she will sorely be missed:rip:

I just saw a few minutes of Larry King Live which he was talking to Betty White & Rue McClanahan on the phone to talk about the memories of Bea Arthur.
