In sports, there are lots of meaningful player statistics.

But I'll bet there are some that you don't think are as important as others think they are.

Here are a few of mine:

1. Strikeouts by a batter- people make too much of a deal about sluggers who have a lot of strikeouts. From 2006 to 2008, Ryan Howard struck out 181, 199, and 199 times in each season. But Philly fans didn't seem to get on his case for it- after all, he had 58, 47, and 47 homers and 149, 139, and 146 RBI's in those respective seasons.

Wreckless knows about this- there have been plenty of instances where Howard would have a 4 or 5 strikeout game one night and have a huge night the next.

EVERYBODY strike outs- Reggie Jackson struck out more times than any batter in history, and he's a Hall of Famer.

2. on-base percentage. Just because you're on base 61 percent of the time doesn't mean you'll score all the time. I think how often you get on base is not as important as scoring runs.

it's irony and backwards tp me, cause the most meaningless thing about sports in the general perspective are the statistics....

it's all about rooting for our team and becoming one with the sport.....

NBA
Blocks- most think that it makes you a great defender. It doesn't because a blocked shot doesn't always result in your team getting possession of the ball.


MLB
Slugging %- this has a minimal effect for those that are not power hitters. You don't have to be a power hitter to get runners into scoring position and driving them in.


NFL
Completions- if you're on a team with no running game, you're going to naturally throw the ball more, resulting in more completions. In addition, completions don't always result in first downs or even gains.


NHL
Plus/minus- this would be a good stat if power play goals resulted in pluses. If you're not going to count certain goals, then it is pointless.


As for strikeouts being meaningless, it is not. With Ryan Howard, he may hit 50+ home runs, but what is he doing other than that? If he is not hitting a home run or being intentionally walked, he isn't doing much of anything. Last year, he had 153 hits and 48 of them(31.4%) were home runs. That's nearly 1/3. In an average game, he probably gets to bat 4 times. His home runs/hits ratio means his hit will most likely be a home run. If he doesn't hit a home run, he does nothing else. He walked only 81 times, which is only every other game. He only had 6 sacrifice flies and 3 hit by pitches.

Bottom line is Ryan Howard striking out a ton hurts himself and the team since he does nothing else.

I'll add one- QB Rating in the NFL...if he hikes the ball to end the game, they count it as a loss in yards, which is stupid, and the qb rating doesn't define how good or bad a qb is, or what their game is whatsoever...

It's not that PPG is irrelevant, but it can easily overrate a player. With Allen Iverson, he averaged over 30 PPG on multiple occasions, yet barely shot 40% from the field. Then you take Shaq, who averaged 25-30 PPG and shot 55-60% from the field. It is relevant, but what is more relevant is FG%.

Iverson is a talented individual player. But, he's only good if he has the ball in his hands. He is not the guy you want leading your team. He got lucky in 2001 when the 76ers went to the Finals. If Philly never went to the Finals that year, he would be on the same level as Vince Carter and Dominique Wilkins.

I watched every 76ers playoff game in 2001 and luck had nothing to do with it, it was the talent and skills of AI who led the team by himself to the Finals. After that game 1 win over the Lakers, he had nothing left.
