View Full Version : Should public schools have Good Friday as a day off?
Chocoholic 04-06-2009, 03:44 PM I think it should depend on the school district. If a lot of staff members and students observe Good Friday and choose to take the day off, then it really is just a wasted day for learning. I know of a couple of towns in my area in recent years that tried to hold school on Good Friday, but hardly anyone showed up, so they went back to having it off.
catlover79 04-06-2009, 03:47 PM I went to public school and always had it off. When I went to community college, it was open on Good Friday. I didn't like that. I think that ALL schools should have Good Friday off.
browneyes106 04-06-2009, 03:56 PM I went schools that always had Good Friday off. Most of the districts in my state have it off there are a few districts that only a half day for Good Friday.
Hollow 04-06-2009, 04:06 PM it should be the school/district's individual decision. i know it has to do with religion but i don't know what good friday is, let alone ever had the day off from school. i've never known anyone who's taken the day off to observe it. it's not "wrong" to have a day off because of a religious holiday (unless they do it way too often) but i don't like the idea of it much either.
catlover79 04-06-2009, 04:10 PM It always seemed to count as the first day of spring break.
Doodyville10019 04-06-2009, 04:31 PM When i was in grammar school and high school, Good Friday was always the LAST day of spring break. We went back to school the folowing Monday. When I went to college, it was the other way around.

Good Friday is the day chosen to memorialise the day that Christ was crucified (like 25th December is to memorialise his birth.)
I think in the UK all schools have the day off.
Mr. Television 04-06-2009, 05:41 PM All schools should be off on Good Friday. It's more important than Easter Monday. We used to always get about a week off anyway so it never was much of an issue when I was in school. I do remember , one time though, that the school used Good Friday as a makeup day because of weather and my Mother wouldn't let me go to school.
ZeldaGilroy 04-06-2009, 06:59 PM I am a teacher in a public school and we have always had Good Friday off...until this year! I can't believe it...we have school Friday. UGH! And we have a huge Catholic population...already parents are telling me their kids are not coming to school Friday. It will be a wasted day...I'm already planning a lot of silly/fun stuff because I can't follow the curriculum if half my class will miss it!
As for it being part of sping break...that never happens here because our spring break is in mid-March!
littlebelle 04-06-2009, 07:33 PM Yes, it is part of Holy week.
MickeyMac 04-06-2009, 08:29 PM I think schools should have Good Friday off.

Makes me glad I'm not in school any more!
EmoJoe 04-06-2009, 11:12 PM yeah, we have Jewish holidays off so we get Good Friday off too obviously...although usually our spring break is the week before Easter, so we have it off anyway. the years where its not we still have off though.

That's how it always worked when I was in school - we had Good Friday and then the entire Easter week off as our spring break. My, how times have changed since then.
steevo 04-08-2009, 10:50 PM ^ And not for the better it looks like. :(
All schools should have Good Friday off. It is a day for believers to remember the sacrifice of the Lord.
catlover79 04-08-2009, 10:57 PM ^ AMEN!!
comedyfreak 04-09-2009, 04:05 AM I'm so old I don't remember if we got the week before or after off.
Holly 04-09-2009, 06:57 AM Yes I think they should because it's the weekend when we ALL Celabrate Easter, is there religion, and to thank god exc. We have off from work to on Friday. long weekend for everyone :D
Penny Lane 04-10-2009, 12:17 PM Well at least in my area Good Friday was always the beginning of Easter vacation.(That's what spring break USED to be called) I remember up until about 20-30 years ago all businesses would close between the hours of 1-3 PM. That is unheard of now! It depends on where you live I suppose. I know that several school districts in Michigan do not close for Martin Luther King Day. (Mostly rural schools) So it's up to the school district.
MrCleveland 04-10-2009, 03:17 PM Many children and teachers would be going to church in the afternoon because some go to noon mass, especially the ones who are Catholic.

You said it!
Brad Russ 04-11-2009, 12:27 AM I think Christian students should get the option of having the day off if they choose. I also think all other Religion's who have special Holiday's on a school day, should have the option of taking that day off as well. These types of days are very special to certain Religions, and they should be able to stay home and celebrate their Holiday in whatever way the choose. That's my opinion.
