View Full Version : The "Iffen" song
steevo 03-26-2009, 11:44 PM I just watched the episode "Hippie Hippie Hooray" from season 4. Toward the end, Sam's cousin Serena plays a ditty called "Iffen" for Darren's boss and his wife who were visiting. It was a cool little 60's ditty and I saw that Elizabeth Montgomery seemed to embrace playing a dual role of both Sam and her troublesome cousin Serena. You could tell from watching this that she had a lot of fun playing Serena. Agree?:D

Totally, and Serena was such a fun character, I bet Liz Montgomery got a thrill whenever the scripts had a role for Serena.
I think they should have released "the Iffin Song" as a single. It would have been a hit.
TripperFan 03-27-2009, 03:51 PM I saw a bio where Elizabeth specifically asked for the character of Serena to break up playing "the good girl" all the time.
Apparently she and her husband (Asher) who was the director of the show would even slip off to a motel at lunchtime while she was in costume to have a bit of midday fun (if you know what I mean).
catlover79 03-27-2009, 04:07 PM That was indeed a catchy song. Liz looked she was having the time of her life in that episode.

There is a comment or two here I could make but I wont :happyface :happyface :D

Maybe that's where Norman Lear got the inspiration for the AITF episode where Mike has the hots for Gloria's black wig? :)

Good theory...maybe Jan Brady was really onto something!!
steevo 03-27-2009, 11:57 PM ^ Hmmm... Serena gets a black wig, Gloria gets a black wig and it gets Mike excited, Jan gets a black wig and her personality changes for that one episode,
and don't forget the Three's Company episode where Janet gets a blonde wig and her personality changes too.
Somehow there's another thread in this.
comedyfreak 03-28-2009, 08:31 AM I enjoyed watching the Serena episodes. I liked her slinky sexy theme.
MickeyMac 03-28-2009, 02:01 PM Yeah I always dug the outfits Serena wore, and the hip slang she always talked in.
OOliver 04-03-2009, 04:15 PM I read basically the same thing...
Montgomery was growing bored with the show (which was evident by season 6), and wanted to do something 'challenging'. This was a caharcter that she and her husband came up with, and she enjoyed playing her.
catlover79 04-03-2009, 04:25 PM The wacky, wild Serena:

You do realise Serena debuted in the SECOND season? If Montgomery was bored at that point all I can say is that she must have been a very restless person with a zilch attention span.
catlover79 04-03-2009, 04:34 PM Yeah, Serena first showed up in "And Then There Were Three" in Season 2 (when Tabitha was born), but didn't appear again until "Double, Double, Toil and Trouble" (aka the pie fight episode) in Season 4. Serena did bring quite a bit of spice to the proceedings - Liz did seem to enjoy bringing her naughty side to the forefront.
MickeyMac 04-03-2009, 04:46 PM Samantha-Good girl
Serena-Wild child
Only Liz Montgomery would have the charm, acting ability, looks and sex appeal to be appealing and attractive as both characters :happyface :happyface :happyface
catlover79 09-21-2009, 12:56 PM That song always rings through my head when I'm driving and see cars with license plates that begin with "EFN" or "IFN".

That's a nice tribute to whoever wrote that song for the show.

How cute!! I've done that with license plates too! That is a great segment!

Elizabeth took other opportunities to play an alter ego. At lease once Endora zapped herself into the image of Samantha. Then there was the time Tabitha conjured up another "mommy" cause she was jealous of her attention towards newly born Adam. But at the end, usually Serena got blamed.
biffbronson 09-25-2009, 05:28 PM I have to admit that Elizabeth turned me on most as a blonde hippie...:eyes:
Followed by her normal portrayal of Sam, and then last as Serena when she went back in time as Serena, with that old period look (IIRC, she went back to revisit Newton whom she had turned into the bedwarmer).
I couldn't really get into the short brunette wig look as much as those other looks, but still Liz was Liz. And if I were David White and "Serena" came on like that, I think I would've had a heart attack on the spot. You know old 'Cottontop' loved those scenes!
MickeyMac 09-25-2009, 10:41 PM Serena brought out the sexier side of things, but I'll take Sam any way I can get her. :happyface
catlover79 09-25-2009, 10:52 PM Who wrote the "Iffen" song, anyway? I may have to ask Herbie if no one here knows.

You can always check the credits from that episode. Provided they gave songwriting credit.

I already asked Herbie - he told me it was Warren Barker. So there you go.
