White person to become a fan of the show. It's basically because the George Jefferson character is much worst than Archie Bunker and always expressed his hate for the white race in almost every episode. As a black person, I was able to get into All in the Family because he was prejudiced against all races, not just one. And when watching All in the family, there wasn't a constant put down of one particular race and not only that Archie was actually friends with a black neighbor. George on the otherhand was never friendly to his white neighbors until the series was halfway over. So basically if you watched this show as a white viewer, you were probably going to be offended because the show gave the message that racism was ok for blacks but not for whites which was shown everytime George called Tom and Helen a zebra or Tom a Honkey. So the show still has it's moments that are funny but as a black viewer who is no longer 12 and over 30 can see the unnecessary moments on the show. That probably explains why this message board was never really active in all the seven years I been here-lol

The show is on TV land and the boars is still dead, but I can undestand that now versus back in 2002.

I always loved the Jeffersons. I was 9 when it premiered and I watched it almost to the end of it's run. I was never offended by it. My whole family watched it and they weren't offended either. I knew a lot of white people who were fans. I think people are too sensitive nowadays and maybe today's younger generation doesn't get the show's humor.

If Archie Was anything like George I would have STAYED far away from All in the Family-lol But yeah I know a lot of white fans of the Jeffersons too that I went to college with. It just too George so long to be LIKABLE-lol It took him 4 years to even go out in public with Mr. Bentely.

I am a white viewer and I've never really been bothered by anything said on The Jeffersons. It never really took me anytime to warm up to George. George, Louise, and Florence are my favorite characters. It took me longer to warm up to the white characters on the show.

I'm not saying that no white person like the show, I can just understand why this board is not as active as other boards. But why did it take you longer to warm up to the White characters?

Funny, you know it was the same for me. I agree that George was WAAAAY more racist than Archie was, but I guess as whites, we're probably not as sensitive as other colours might be (in other words, we don't have the history of our ancestors being made slaves hanging over us).

What I did find a little offensive though (and the same with the Cosby show) is that when they did have a white character, often they were portrayed as nerdy as hell, goofy, or as a jerk. I always thought why can't they just have characters on the same level in a show - like they did on All In The Family. Actually most of the blacks on AITF were portrayed as cool or savvy.

I still laugh at cracks about whites - as long as it's all made in fun who cares. Most of the time the jokes are right on the money! ;)

For me anyway, see my post above. I just thought they were "goofy" nerds.

Yah, he wasn't as "bad" as the others, but still a little on the "goody-goody" side for me. ;) lol

I can think of four more white characters who were nerdy or goofy

Charlie the Bartender
Mr. Whittendale
Mr. Whitendale's brother
Mrs. Whittendale

Exactly! Even Willis was a bit of a dork (Mr. Hugs)! I can't remember one truly "cool" white person on there! lol

I meant to say Charlie and the Whittendales were not NERDS. The only white Goofballs were Tom and Bentley

What are you talking about?? This board is one of the most active boards of the entire 70s decade!

You're overreacting as to whites who are offended by George because this is just a COMEDY. The percentage of whites would be offended are the same percent who are Klan members or in a white supremacist group which is far less than 1 percent of the country.

Out of all the shows in the 70s decade it is the 4th or 5th most active and there has to be 25 to 30 shows in this decade. That is pretty active.

We are even ahead of Sandford and Son.

I don;t think it's active enough for the show to be currently on Two networks, TV LAND and TV ONE. I see other boards with more activity and those shows are not even on cable like

Chico and The Man
Happy Days
Laverne and Shirley
Maude
One Day at a Time
Three's Company

As far as George goes, yes I thought that he was too much. There are times I don't like watching the 70's version of the show because George was too intense with the white joke comments. I prefer the 80's version than the 70's.

I had posted how George was a hypocrite in the ep when Alan Willis was dating the Banker's daughter and then when found out Alan was half black he didn't want her to date him anymore. Then George had the audacity to get mad when he didn't want want Lionel dating Jenny because she was half white-lol

So basicaly the ep gave off the message-"only blaks are allowed to racist"
