View Full Version : Old time radio
Jude The Obscure 03-11-2009, 10:23 PM anybody else here into listening to old radio shows--be it tape, CD, mp3 files?
I was always interested but only recently have gotten into big time with CDs of "My Favorite Husband" (Lucille Ball's radio predecessor to I Love Lucy) and "Father Knows Best" ( a two volume set). I eventually want to explore even more sitcoms and even dramas like "Suspense".
And perhaps, even do the audiobooks thing like this since my actual reading time with novels, etc has just vanished within the past 5 years.
I listen in my car to and from my job, during my breaks and my lunch hour.
Marvo301 03-11-2009, 10:34 PM I used to work Graveyard shift and there were a couple of radio stations that played old radio shows late at night. I got really into listening to the old radio shows. My favorites include Burns and Allen, Fibber McGee and Molly, The Life of Riley, The Shadow, Yours Truly Johnny Dollar, The Whistler, X minus 7, The Jack Benny Program, and My Favorite Wife.
Jude The Obscure 03-11-2009, 10:38 PM Well you rock, Marv!
My g/f is supposed to make me a CD copy of "The Aldrich Family".

I began my trading career with old time radio. as I grew up with radio. Played casettes in the car till cd's and mp3's came into vogue.
Have 90 dvds, in mp3 format of old time radio. With upwards of over 400 shows on a dvd, that's quite a bit of radio. Still listen to it as I always loved radio.
Can remember as a kid, huddled under the blankets on a cold winter night, shaking not from the cold but hearing the voice of "lights out"
Never missed the shadow on sunday night and have listened to all that exist.

dakert 03-12-2009, 11:37 AM Old Time Radio shows are a lot of fun.
I like listening to them when I am on the treadmill
Jude The Obscure 03-12-2009, 03:05 PM Thanks for the offer, Harvey. :)
Does anyone know if Laurel & Hardy ever did radio? I have an old LP with six L&H radio shows, but I don't know if these were just actors taking on the personas of L&H. Still I enjoyed having that record since I was a kid and one day hoped to get it converted to mp3s.

They never had a show but did guest spots. If you want the mp3's, my treat, just email me where to send.

The boys from across the pond put out a beautiful 22 dvd set of Laurel and Hardy, silents and talkies, in pristine condition. Watched it three times. By far the best comedic pair.
Doodyville10019 03-12-2009, 04:23 PM I listed to Old Time Radio quite a bit when I was in high school! We had a show on WNIB Radio back in the '70s called Those Were The Days, and it was hosted by Chuck Schaden. He would play some really awesome shows like Gunsmoke, Jack Benny, Take It Or Leave It (which became The $64,000 Question on TV), and others. I really enjoyed listening to the big band remotes that were played every now and then!
MickeyMac 03-12-2009, 05:18 PM I dont know if this counts as old time radio (it probably dosent), but I like to listen to original radio broadcasts from the 50's and 60's. Not just the songs but the radio announcments, weather, news, commericials, and the old jingles.
Jude The Obscure 03-12-2009, 06:05 PM ^I think it counts, Mick! :)

Radio flourished from the early 30's thru the early 50's, with the 40's called the golden age of radio. By the early 50's because of "uncle Miltie" and TV per se, radio was mostly dead. Benny was still on till 1955, Gunsmoke, Yours truly Johnny Dollar and Our Miss Brooks were still on but soon left.
Radio became music stations as talk radio didn't arrive till later. In New York we had Alan Fried and his moondogs, till payola hit. There was the WMCA "good guys" and WCBS with Harry Harrison, Ron Lundy and Murray the K. The 50's and radio was rock and roll. Of course the 60's brought the British invasion.

Did I get to hear Alan Freed and Murray the K(Kaufman)? Saw and heard.
The two big theaters in Brooklyn were the Brooklyn Fox and the Brooklyn Paramount. Both were located in downtown Brooklyn on Dekalb Avenue. They both held rock and shows monthly. Freed at the Paramount and Murray at the Fox. All teenagers attended. Keep in mind that most singers and groups at that time were teenagers and were happy to have a gig. It gave exposure and helped sell records. At the end of the 50's along came Dick Clark and teenage bandstand and that was national exposure. All the local groups and many from Jersey and Philadelphia played at the theaters. Saw the Drifters, Duvalls, Tony Williams and the Platters, at the theaters. Murray the K had is own language and we all spoke it.
Each theater held over 1000 folks and was great for the shows.
Yes, that was a longtime ago but it seems like yesterday.

Thats a great story thanks :)
dawsongirl 03-13-2009, 12:05 AM I have a lot of things Lucille Ball did. My favs are the two Suspence episodes Lucy and Desi did together. I also have two episodes of The Zero Hour, a radio show Rod Serling had in the 70s, but one of them is on a reel and I have yet to hear it.
Jude The Obscure 03-13-2009, 02:30 PM ^Wow, that's awesome! there was a CD at goodwill of some of Lucy's dramatic roles, but I let my friend have it, since she is just as big of fan.
treky 03-14-2009, 01:04 AM I LOVE listening to old time radio shows!! I have a LOT of episodes of "THE JACK BENNY SHOW", "THE GREAT GILDERSLEEVE", "FIBBER McGEE & MOLLY", "THE LONE RANGER", "GUNSMOKE" and a lot of others that I mostly recorded off the radio onto audio cassette back in the 80s, when a local radio station used to play them on weeknights like a lot of stations did (but sadly, don't anymore:( :( ). And I also have a lot on cassette that I sent away for from a mail order company I belonged to back then. I haven't listened to them in years, though. I plan to buy a cassette player and listen to them again. Now, I like to find web sites that play them, and I'm planning to also get some on CD.
What's an mp3 file, anyway?
(now I'm really showing my age! )

A radio show is 30 minutes long, so a 60 minute cassette can store two shows in audio format. The cassette the was the established storage method for years. Along came mp3's. A mp3 is a compression device where the audio file can be compressed and stored to less then 10 percent of it's original file.
Depending how tightly the compression is, a standard cd can hold upwards of 100 radio shows. They can be listened to on a mp3 player or turned back to a audio file.
Usually used with music. I have dvd's with over 1000 songs on each, in mp3 format. With the usual 24 songs on a standard cd, this is the equivilent of 40 cds on one dvd. With a burning program, you can make your own custom cd.
Example. Here is the year 1957 and in sequence the top 483 songs of the year, on one dvd.

Jude The Obscure 03-14-2009, 11:04 AM Whew, aren't you fingers tired, Harv? ;)
Jude The Obscure 03-14-2009, 11:06 AM I LOVE listening to old time radio shows!!
(now I'm really showing my age! )
I've received big recommends from others on the Great Gildersleeve and Gunsmoke (which some say is a SUPERIOR product to what was put out on TV, esp the later color years).
lilhave 03-14-2009, 11:41 AM Whew, aren't you fingers tired, Harv? ;)
There is a program called listmaker, which in about 2 seconds copies the contents of a dvd as a text file. Free program and great for telling someone what's on a particular dvd without doing any typing. I have on dvds the top songs of every year from 1891 thru 1990.

Cds went out yesterday morning.
The Great One 03-14-2009, 03:26 PM I listed to Old Time Radio quite a bit when I was in high school!
Chuck Schaden is still hosting "Those Were The Days" every Saturday afternoon from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm CT. The program airs on WDCB-FM 90.9, the public radio station at College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. You can listen to his show over the internet. Here's the link to Chuck's website:

Jude The Obscure 03-16-2009, 10:35 PM Got the 2 CDs in today, Harv! :)
I'll let you know what I think of the show. I'm still into "Father Knows Best" at this point. Although I could play some of these while I'm on the computer
Thanks Again!
Dusty's Fan 03-17-2009, 07:52 AM "Lum & Abner" fan here!
As a fan of "My Favorite Husband," you might want to look at an episode or two of the old TV series "Mr. and Mrs. North" (like an early "Hart to Hart") starring Richard Denning, to see what he looked like at the time "I Love Lucy" was airing. There might be an ep or two online somewhere. It's too bad that his series (co-starring Barbara Britton) did not last longer -- I like it!

Denning and Ball starred on radio in my favorite husband. CBS wanted to bring it to Tv but Lucy balked. The only way she would do the show was if a unknown Latin bandleader, her husband in real life played the lead male role. At first CBS said no but relented and the rest is history.
Britton was a very good actress, having way more talent then Denning. I have almost all of the TV shows of Mr. and Mrs. North, which came from radio, and while it's a mystery, Britton interjects humor. Britton as Pam North is always in and out of trouble.
In real life Britton and Denning didn't get along that well and while popular in the ratings it was cancelled.
For homespun humor there was no better then Lum and Abner. Like Gosden and Corell of Amos and andy, almost all the characters were played by the two leads. Loved the beginning with the phone ringing at the Jot Em! down store. I have listened to most of the episodes as they had story lines much like a serial.

Harvey
Wow, the Jim Reeves and Elvis Presley songs are the best and that's a great playlist
Jude The Obscure 12-06-2009, 10:49 PM I tried "Lum and Abner"--I just didn't get it. Same with "Vic and Sade"
Now I sampled some "My Friend Irma" and that was hilarious!
Currently I'm into a 100 episode collection of radio episodes of "The Guiding Light"
