View Full Version : RyanAir CEO wants to charge for using the restroom!
bmasters9 03-09-2009, 07:49 AM http://www.walletpop.com/blog/2009/03/06/cross-your-legs-pay-to-pee-on-airlines-is-definitely-coming/
Michael O'Leary, CEO of Irish airline RyanAir (at least, I think it's Irish--I may be incorrect), wants to make it to where you have to use a credit card to use the restroom. Can you understand how incredibly callous this is?! I mean, all the fees that airlines normally charge are bad enough (luggage charges, fees to carry on purchases, food and drink charges, etc.), but to pay to use the restroom, and that with a credit card-- that is the epitome of utter stupidity, if you ask me.
It's made worse by the fact that some of the people that use the restroom are children or older adults with bladder problems. If they have to pay to use the restroom, where would we be?!
Chocoholic 03-09-2009, 08:39 AM That is disgusting and inhumane! Relieving oneself is a biological function and no one should have to pay for doing it. They shouldn't even be charging for water, imho.

Chocoholic 03-09-2009, 09:21 AM :brent I'm actually surprised Roy never came up with that idea on Wings
Seriously though, I think this plan will backfire and people will take their business elsewhere. (No pun intended.)

So, so true!!
I had heard that some other airlines were considering this, too! It's outrageous!! The primary reason airlines had started charging all these stupid charges(I still refuse to spend $2 for a drink), is because of the high cost of diesel fuel. That was then. Fuel has gone down. Now sometimes I see it about the same price as unleaded. What's their excuse now??
Chocoholic 03-09-2009, 10:59 AM ^ Probably towards the outragoeus salaries, bonuses, and perks for the CEO's and other higher-ups. They'll cut costs and increase fees before they give up fome of their own money. It's the same everywhere. In fact, the superindentent of schools suggested that all staff forego a raise this year; however, those at the administrative level will still get their rasies and face no cuts.

Waterston_Fan 03-09-2009, 10:18 PM This sounds like a foreign airline. I don't think they can do that here in the states with because of the American with Disabilities Act.

Yeah, the article mentioned it was an Irish airline. Imagine the backlash if this ever DID happen in America??
OH Nuts! 03-09-2009, 10:37 PM It's tacky, inhumane, and shows a glaring lack of business acumen. Bet u dollars to doughnuts Mr. Dum Dum CEO will regret the decision big time. I can just see all the BAD publicity now...pictures of grannies doubled up in pain fishing for coins or credit cards etc. and the ill it will engender - esp. on the Internet. People WILL take their business elsewhere - pun and no pun intended.
I'm pretty sure that Ryan Airlines is British, not Irish. Their main base of operations is Stansted, England.
I have traveled on Ryan Air before. They're very cheap, but make no mistake -there's a price to be paid. I flew from England to Italy, but my flight left at 5 in the morning. No public transportation is running at that hour so most people (including me) were stuck sleeping at the airport. Stansted is in the middle of nowhere - there are no hotels or restaurants or anything in the area... just the airport. There were people who actually pitched tents inside the terminal. I wish I had. I was stuck trying to catch a few measly hours of sleep on two very uncomfortable chairs. There's no free food at all during the flight, and by the time I arrived in Venice I was so tired and hungry I didn't really care where I was or how much anything cost. So honestly, their charging for the restroom doesn't surprise me at all.
In Europe, it's not uncommon for restrooms to charge a fee (usually about 25 cents) per visit. You have to insert a coin in order for the stall door to open. I was really disgusted the first time, but after a while you get used to it. Ryan Air charging for their toilets is annoying, but not surprising. There's a reason their tickets from England to Italy cost about 30 bucks.

Ryanair is based in Dublin, Ireland.

I guess its that old adage abt you getting what you pay for. I don't know if I'd be willing to rough it so much....guess its a personal decision.
I can live without meals on planes - they were basically just glorified TV dinners anyways...I'll just bring my own food -so that part's not a big deal ...but airports in the middle of nowhere and no easy way to get to them... and paying for the john on an airplane...yecch ...that's where I draw the line.

You're right. I was just always routed through Stansted, so I assumed that was their main center. My bad :)

I didn't quite realize I was going to be stuck in that situation a month ahead, when I made my reservation ;) But you know what, I wouldn't trade my week in Italy for anything. I didn't have any money, so I flew cheap and stayed in youth hostels. It was rough, but worth it

I guess if I knew beforehand what to expect, got to go into something like this with my eyes open - then maybe it might not be so bad.
BTW, where did you go in Italy? What was your fav city/place? And....do you speak any Italian? You got my curiousity up. Italy is a place I would love to visit. So...do tell!!!

Nicely put, Rich - especially that last line.
Brad Russ 03-10-2009, 10:32 PM well i hope they have fun cleaning the seats.
 You beat me to it. lol! I really do feel bad for all the potential passengers with bladder control problems. What are they to do if they're on a long flight and don't have the money to pay to use the restroom?? I see only one other option, and it sure wouldn't be pretty!!

I say let Mr. CEO clean it. It was his execreable idea!

I agree. You want to rip people off, you should have to deal with the consequences of it.

Thanks for asking! I flew into Venice, which was definately my favorite area. It's the most beautiful place on earth. I also saw Florence and Rome. Rome was amazing. I'm not Catholic, but the Vatican was definately worth seeing.
I took a semester of Italian back in college, but I wouldn't say I speak it. I could say hello, goodbye, where's the bathroom - you know, all the important things. I mostly got around with plain old English. Anyways, I definately recommend going to Italy. The people there are so friendly, and they make the best food!

things are so expensive in england these days, although VAT has been slashed this year and so goods are slightly cheaper than they were before. in london we have paid toilets and so as Liza says, its not something that is uncommon to us brits. but yeah, i too would never pay just to use the loo. there are paid toilets in a shopping complex in oxford street and yet i rarely use them because you have to pay, which is ridiculous.
though one time i saw someone jump over the turnstyles and into the restroom. usually, you'd put something like £1 and then you go through the turnstyle. but this person didn't do that.
Chocoholic 03-11-2009, 07:02 PM I just can't imagine making money off of something that's a natural bodily function. What's next, a dollar for every burp, fart, or sneeze?

A dollar if you get sneezed on, and if the fart stinks horribly
